Prophecy Radio episode #123 has us excited to chat with Roseanne A. Brown about all things Percy Jackson and the Olympians, including season 1 and what lies ahead in season 2. Amongst a few other things, too (*cough* SERWA *cough*). We also use our news and feedback sections this week to highlight the upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books and to thank you all for your generous support. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:30) Here are your upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books (and their release dates as best we know): It Waits in the Forest by Sarah Dass (May 14) The Dark Becomes her by Judy I. Lin (October 1) *Moko Magic: Carnival Chaos by Tracey Baptiste (Aug 6) (Freedom Fire–Kwame MBalia's imprint) Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee (Sept 10) Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World by Roseanne A. Brown (Nov 5) A Conversation with Roseanne A. Brown(00:07:17) Welcome Rosanne! We are so excited to geek out over Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 with you. Roseanne is very happy about how PJO season 1 turned out. And she acknowledges how hard adventures shows can be to get right. We talk about all our favorite moments and characters. Our most unexpected moments means we are once again gushing over Grover Underwood. (I have a feeling this is gonna keep happening, folks.) It's important to acknowledge that nothing is perfect, so we also touch on items we would change a little bit, if we had such power. TYSON! TYSON! TYSON! We are all super excited to see Percy's brother make his appearance, especially since his role is so pivotal to the story. There are also tons of moments we're looking forward to seeing, from tentpole to tender. We want to see Percy working on his fighting, both swordsmanship and harnessing the power of the ocean. If Percy Jackson and the Olympians inspires some competition, we hope it comes in the form of diverse mythologies. (And I mean, there's a whole imprint's worth just waiting for their chance in the sun.) Serwa may (or may not) be coming out on November 5th, 2024, but stick here for all the latest updates, because that is one story we are DYING to get our hands on We lose our cool a little, telling Rosie about how much we love the Serwa Boateng series. Time to beg a little for a teaser detail or two for Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World, and Rosie kindly DELIVERS. Writing a book 3 is tough work. There aren't any projects on the horizon that Rosie can tell us about right now, but she does regale us with a list of all kinds of books she's been reading lately. (Some are adult titles, so consider yourselves warned!) Feedback (00:47:01) A HUGE thank you to everyone who has ever left us a review or a rating on their chosen podcast-listening-platform. We appreciate you all so much, and we just wanted to take a quick moment this week to make sure you know we do see them (even if we forget to check on those sometimes). Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 124, an as yet undetermined topic because we cannot make up our minds. Make sure you keep an eye on our social media as we will be letting you know about our next discussion topic there! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought, Kristen Kranz, and Roseanne A. Brown. Prophecy Radio episode #122 sits down with a surprise guest to talk about A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel. We also get a newbie's reaction to Percy Jackson season 1, including what questions they still had after the final credits rolled. There's also some important Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news to discuss, including our dreams coming true with the announcement of a Funko line, as well as some listener feedback from the past couple weeks. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:03:09) Give a big, warm welcome to our friend Danielle, who we're so excited to have on the show for the first time! Did you see that we're getting Percy Jackson Funkos!? Perhaps even more surprising—we're getting a Percy Jackson cookbook, too! Oh, hey, Luke Arnold from Black Sails would make for an excellent addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians. We pick Danielle's brain about Percy Jackson season 1 considering she's never read the books! What improvements would she like to see in season 2? A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel (00:20:15) If you're not mentally prepared for this discussion, please take care of yourself and either skip it or come back later! How familiar were we with Medusa's story and/or Indian mythology? What were our overall thoughts on A Drop of Venom? Let's talk about Manisha and what a nagin is. And we can't forget about Noni! Then there's Pratyush, who's a slayer because, well, his father was a slayer. We liked that Sajni didn't ignore the struggles men also have thanks to societal norms and pressures. But did anyone else think he was a little sus in the beginning? We talk explicitly about Manisha's rape and how it was depicted on the page. There are no words for how angry Sita's betrayal made us. The victim blaming in this book is, unfortunately, a reflection of real life. It's important not to use passive language when talking about violence against marginalized groups. Was the General just Hera in disguise!? He really should've made sure Manisha was dead. This was not the only sexual assault in the book. It's important for men to stand up against other men when they are participating in rape culture. We loved Dev, but he was pretty intense!? Girls have to stick together! Menstruation is totally normal and we should talk about it more. Did you figure out who the three elders represented? We LOVED that this book talked about the subjectivity of monstrosity, just like Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. Is Pratyush as much of a “monster” as Manisha? Embrace your darkness! The spoiler section begins at 1:20:12. Did the general suffer enough? How did we feel about the “love story” between Manisha and Pratyush? Thank GOODNESS Noni is still alive. We have a couple guesses as to what the next book will be about, and even what the title might be! Feedback (00:52:50) Steph agrees that Aryan Simhadri IS Grover Underwood. Reilly also agrees that the video we posted in our IG stories needed to have a wedding dress for Grover. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 123, in which we'll have a chat with Roseanne A. Brown about Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as her upcoming book, Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Soneela Nanknai's talents are in full force in this monstrous and magical fantasy series. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss Roseanne A Brown's thrilling sequel to SERWA BOATENG'S GUIDE TO VAMPIRE HUNTING. Serwa has discovered a shocking secret—she's an obayifo, a vampire witch, just like those she's spent her life training to fight. Nankani's dynamic voice and boundless energy match the action and Serwa's roiling emotions as she goes into hiding to train with her obayifo aunt. She conveys all the drama as Serwa fights the newfound urge to drink blood, plans a dangerous heist, realizes she has a huge crush, and travels to the underworld. Prophecy Radio episode #102 jumps into Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan, discussing the first three chapters in detail. We also break down the latest Rick Riordan news, including updates on Survivor season 45, the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes, the Mark of Athena graphic novel, and more. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:23) Happy birthday to Leah Jeffries, who turned 14 on September 25! Roseanne A. Brown is stepping away from Twitter and will primarily be on Instagram. The Mark of Athena graphic novel is officially on sale! Khadijah Khatib has created new covers for the UK edition of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Did you pick up a Barnes & Noble exclusive edition of Chalice of the Gods? Check to see if any pages are missing! We give you a couple of small updates about the sequel(!) to Chalice of the Gods. Introducing Kristen's Korner! She gives us an awesome update about the Survivor season 45 premiere, starring J. Maya! Kristen also talks about the latest updates for the strikes. The writers are officially back to work! You can read about the agreement here. Adam Conover has a great summary of what they won. It's important to note that SAG-AFTRA is still striking, so we can't talk about the show just yet. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:26:40) This week, we're talking about Chalice of the Gods chapters 1-3. Let's kick it off with chapter 1, where Percy can't go a single day without getting mixed up with the Greek gods. We are OBSESSED with the first line of the book. If you were worried about this not feeling like Percy Jackson…it was all in vain! Percy just wants to go to school and do his homework and not have to worry about all this other stuff!! That being said, thank goodness for Alternative High School. It's New Rome University (and Annabeth) or DEATH! We're still fascinated by how the Mist works. The biggest twist of this chapter is that Eudora was actually trying to be helpful. Now we know where the blue jolly ranchers came from. What is a psychoeducational evaluation?? Percy is SO annoyed he has to do NEW quests for the gods. We really want to know more about other demigod schools around the country or the world. Was Eudora more scared of Poseidon or Percy? How was Poseidon eavesdropping on their conversation?? In Chalice of the Gods chapter 2, Percy visits Poseidon, who “helps” him with his recommendation letters. Poseidon's Private Plumbing System™ is classic Rick Riordan. Percy has some pretty eclectic friends. Percy is in debt…life debt. All these rules and stipulations are a little ridiculous, if you ask us. Will Nico have to go through all of this if he wants to get into NRU? Would Thalia, if she ever leaves the Hunters? Will Percy Jackson ever reach 18 years old? We could totally see Percy being a part of Camp Half-Blood even as an adult. What would a second-gen demigod be like, and could we ever get a story about that? Let's talk about Chalice of the Gods chapter 3 because… …PERCABETH IS BACK!!! We loved how Annabeth immediately volunteered to help with Percy's quests. Is it true that Percy never really wanted to date anyone else? Percabeth reminds us of Rick and Becky, and it makes us so happy! THEIR PULSES ALIGN WHEN THEY HOLD HANDS. Is something going on with Annabeth at her school? Annabeth and Paul being BFFs is amazing, and we loved every second. Percy is so reflective and introspective in this book. Kristen reminds Karen that we do not trumpet…we panflute! Grover no longer wears pants. Was Luke not able to transition into the real world? We have SO many good ideas for future Percy Jackson books. Percy's love of family dinner hit us both pretty hard. Sally Jackson is about to be a published author!! How amazing would it be if we got a standalone novel following Grover as the Lord of the Wild?? Feedback (01:29:58) Rachel writes in to give us some feedback about the first three chapters of Chalice of the Gods. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 103, in which we'll discuss the Chicago stop of the Chalice of the Gods book tour before tackling chapters 4 and 5 of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #101 discusses the latest Rick Riordan Presents book, Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. We also break down the latest Rick Riordan news, including updates on Chalice of the Gods, the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes, and more. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:44) Don't forget that Serwa Boateng 2 is out in the world now. Read Riordan wants you to meet the god of death, Owuo. If you couldn't make it to any of the Chalice of the Gods book tour stops, be sure to register (FOR FREE) for the Flip event taking place on October 5. If you're going to NYCC, be sure to stop by Disney Publishing to check out what they have on their shelves. Read Riordan also posted an article about Ganymede. He is, in fact, the himbo in question. Could the chalice be used to kill a god!? A mortal stealing the chalice just seems boring. Karen gets very defensive of poor Ganymede. Suddenly, Iris or Hebe stealing the chalice seems too obvious. Speaking of, Read Riordan also wants us to meet Hebe. Hebe Jeebies seems like the Lotus Hotel and Casino all over again. We find out that Hebe is the one with the chickens. As always, we toss out some wild and unhinged theories. ONE of them has to be close to the truth, don't you think!? Kristen also provides us with a quick update on the strikes. The WGA is meeting with the AMPTP as we speak! Thank goodness Drew Barrymore backpedeled. Did you know Dancing with the Stars is a WGA show because we sure didn't! (And neither did Matt Walsh.) We'll bring you more news next week, but things are looking up! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown (00:22:32) It's time to talk about Serwa Boateng 2, so let's kick this off with Karen's review of the book. We're starting off with a spoiler-free section but it will ruin the surprises from the first book if you haven't read that already! What is this book about? Where did we leave Serwa at the end of the last one? How did this one compare to the first Serwa book? It should come as no surprise that we are BIG fans. As always, there are a lot of important themes to discuss. Poor Serwa is dealing with a lot of change in her life right now. It's gotta be tough resisting the urge to drink blood when you're a vampire. Auntie Effie is super different than we expected her to be. Can we blame her for hating the Abomofuo? Okay, let's talk about Serwa's ETERNAL NEMESIS, Declan Amankwah. Was anyone (other than Serwa) surprised she had a little crush on him? We thought their interactions were mostly pretty cute, but Kristen is VERY angry with some of Declan's life choices. The spoiler section starts at 00:50:54. What did we think about Nana Bekoe's backstory? Funtunfunefu-Denkyemfunefu ended up being a delightful part of this book. Serwa's motives might've been duplicitous, but we liked the scenes where she hangs out with Declan. Except when they had to fight off that giant bird. That's a giant NOPE from us. Can the cobra come back for Book 3? Serwa was pretty clever in the way she escaped from the adze. The trampoline chat was so tragic yet so important for SO many reasons. Oh no, it's a trap! Kristen is very angry with Declan, but WAIT! It'll get WORSE! Serwa's punishment is…going back to her parents. Did her parents make the right choice in hiding her true nature from her? We're SO proud of Serwa's maturity in the scene where her friends confront her. Did we guess how Serwa was going to escape into the Underworld? Please mark us down as totally intimidated by Owuo. Did Serwa make the right choice by striking a deal with the god of death? Why was Nana Bekoe able to trick Declan into playing the Midnight Drum? Let's just say we are NOT fans of Serwa's grandmother. Will Nana Bekoe come back for Auntie Effie? We're very, very mad at Declan. But also…maybe we can find some sympathy for him, too? Serwa's friends stand up to her again, and we're not mad at all. Serwa found the perfect solution to the problem of her bargain with Death. I'm sorry, her mother is WHAT!? What can we expect in Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 102, in which we'll tackle the first THREE chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #100 celebrates our huge milestone by looking back on our favorite episodes, guest stars, book discussions, and more. We also break down what Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were doing at the end of Heroes of Olympus in anticipation of the next Percy Jackson book. As always, we also discuss all the latest Rick Riordan news, including the chapter titles for Chalice of the Gods. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:07) Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem is now out in the world, and you can read an excerpt on Read Riordan. Rainbow Crate gives us an update on the second batch of The Sun and the Star books being shipped out. Becky gives us a little update on the Kane Chronicles contract amid the strikes. Did you see the Indonesian cover for Chalice of the Gods? Yes, Jesse Bernstein is returning to voice Percy Jackson in Chalice of the Gods. Did you catch Rick's video about CotG? Have you read the FIRST THREE CHAPTERS OF CHALICE OF THE GODS? We discuss the chapter titles in detail and speculate on the plot for the book. Celebrating 100 episodes of Prophecy Radio (00:30:02) We discuss our favorite episodes of the podcast, particularly over the course of the last 50 episodes. What fun facts have we learned in our nearly two years as a podcast? It's so hard to pick favorite guest stars, but there are a few authors who really stick out in our minds. It's also difficult to pick a favorite Rick Riordan Presents book discussion, but we both had similar answers. What were some of our most surprising moments on the podcast? There's SO much to look forward to in our future. Of course, we can't wait for Chalice of the Gods. We also can't wait to be able to talk about the show, but for now, we're staying #WGASTRONG. Leaving on such a cliffhanger, we can't wait to get back to The Red Pyramid. There are also a couple of Rick Riordan Presents books that we're really looking forward to coming up soon! Thank you for listening and celebrating with us! Chalice of the Gods character catch-up (01:02:49) Chalice of the Gods takes place after the Heroes of Olympus and before Trials of Apollo. Percy Jackson went through A LOT in Heroes of Olympus, like being switched with Jason, losing his Curse of Achilles, and falling into Tartarus. Speaking of Tartarus, there's a part about him disintegrating, and we're wondering if that could be related to one of the CotG chapter titles. Will the trio still be mourning Leo's death, or do they know he's alive now? Annabeth spends a lot of time looking for Percy until Mark of Athena, where she really gets to shine. We love a good ol' Percabeth reunion. Percy and Annabeth totally awaken Gaea with their blood, but everything works out in the end and they'll be at New Rome University soon enough. Grover wasn't in the Heroes of Olympus a lot, so we're excited to see more of him in Chalice of the Gods. Will we see Jason in the next book? We also go over some information about Ganymede, since we know he's an integral part of this story. Could Hebe be the Big Bad of Chalice of the Gods? Did you know we (kind of) saw him in Sea of Monsters? Since we know Iris will also be involved, we get some background information on her as well. Surprisingly, our research also mentioned cupcakes and tea! Did we mention how excited we are for this book!? Feedback (01:25:26) Thank you for sharing your Percy Jackson origin story with us, Ian! And thanks again for writing in to us, Caoimhe! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 101, in which we'll discuss Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #97 does a Deep Dive of the Egyptian god Horus. We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some information about a couple characters we'll meet in The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as the latest from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 20, where we get to meet the beautiful goddess Nut. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:05) You should definitely check out this week's episode of Seaweed Brain Podcast. Don't forget to check the CBCC Etsy store for some signed John Rocco prints. Roseanne A. Brown's A Song of Wraiths and Ruin made Paste Magazine's list of 10 of the best YA fantasies of all time. Read Riordan wants us to meet both Leo and Aunt Tina from The Spirit Glass. We discuss a now-deleted tweet from @UpdatesPercy about how the cancellation of The Spiderwick Chronicles and Disney+ shouldn't affect the Percy Jackson show. We also give you the latest from the WGA regarding the August 22 negotiations. Deadline also reports on AMPTP's release of the August 11 proposal. The Hollywood Reporter also reports that AMPTP hired a new crisis PR firm. Deep Dive: Horus (00:22:37) There were a lot of different versions of Horus, and he had a lot of different names! This makes sense because Ancient Egypt lasted about twice as long as Ancient Greece. You might've already known he was the falcon god, but do you know which of his eyes represents the moon and which represents the sun? Do you know, specifically, what kind of falcon Horus turns into? The family dynamics for any god will be super interesting! How was Horus conceived? We really earn our PG-13 rating with our discussion of Set and Horus' battle for dominance. Do you know what the Egyptians considered the sixth sense? Even if you don't know much about Egyptian mythology, you've probably seen the eye of Horus once or twice in your life. Again: The family dynamics of gods are SUPER WEIRD. Do you know which god the Greeks associated with Horus? Horus was a BIG deal for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. And his fight with Set was extremely symbolic. The Festival of Victory was kind of barbaric. Set has a lot of sacred and symbolic animals. Like, A LOT. Sources: Britannica.com EgyptianMuseum.org BeliefMap.org Medium.com Study.com Wikipedia.org The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:42:45) This week, we discuss The Red Pyramid chapter 20. Why was Sadie able to change the shape of her ba? And why is everyone a chicken!? Why does this mysterious boy only visit Sadie? Shame on everyone who didn't remind Karen about the Prophecy Count! Nut looks awesome, and she reminds us of another goddess we saw recently. Would you try sahlab? What kind of relationship do Nut and Isis have? For a goddess, nut is kind of chill, which is a relief considering Sadie's…personality quirks. We get into a philosophical discussion about chaos and order. Why couldn't Nut just TELL Sadie what happened when she descended to earth? Will Set ever become an ally? We got so much information in this chapter! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 98, where we'll discuss The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 21! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #96 celebrates Percy Jackson's birthday with some great fanart, awesome recipes, and a few fun quizzes. How did you celebrate!? We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some great articles that hint at what's to come in Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem, The Spirit Glass, and even Chalice of the Gods. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 19 and get to experience a picnic in the sky. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:04) We remind you that we won't be discussing any news about the forthcoming Disney+ show until the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes are over. Happy birthday, Dior Goodjohn! It's time to meet Funtunfunefu-Denkyemfunefu from Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. And not to be left out, we also talk about Corazon from the upcoming The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi. Read Riordan also had a nice little check-in with the goddess Iris, and we got some cool insight into what will happen in Chalice of the Gods. We also now have a release date for the Lightning Thief collector's edition. Lastly, we talk about AI and art after seeing a tweet on the topic from Victo Ngai. Happy birthday, Percy Jackson! (00:20:13) You can make some awesome Percy Jackson-inspired cupcakes like we did! We also have some other ideas for things you can bake, like these cookies or your own ambrosia/nectar. Have you listened to the Percy Jackson musical soundtrack lately? The Percy Jackson coloring book is always a good way to pass the time. There are so many things you can throw on in the background while you color, like, oh, a certain podcast? Or maybe you want to listen the audiobooks! Kristen recommends them. If you can travel, you should totally do a Percy Jackson tour of NYC. It's completely normal to expect presents for someone else's birthday, right? We also go through some of the best artwork we saw on Percy Jackson's birthday, like this polaroid and cute little Nico/Percy scene from Soia. Dududrigs drew a picture of Percy attending Blue Beetle for his birthday. And even the Empire State Building got in on the action. Thanks to Camp Half-Blood Updates, we saw this beautiful illustration of older and younger Percy from @starsarekind. Hellredsky also drew a picture of Percy covered in icing. And then there was this beautiful illustration of the trio from @182tweets. We finish up Percy's birthday by taking a couple of quizzes. Based on your work habits, which god are you descended from? Based on your college experience, which demigod are you? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:04:48) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 19. It's pretty cool that the entirety of the Louvre is a portal. Carter lost his sword, and this is such a foreign concept to us. If you already lost your sword, WHY WOULD YOU THROW YOUR WAND? Bast very helpfully throws the kids through the portal. We discuss the fact that the Washington Monument is the default portal in the U.S. Why can't anyone read Thoth's book? Is it because it's too dangerous? For some reason Bast can't understand why the kids prefer grilled cheese over Friskies. Did you know what the shape of an obelisk represented? Bast finally tells us more about her time being trapped in the obelisk, and honestly, it sounds horrible. Do we really think the monster didn't escape? Sadie finally tells Carter about what Iskandar said. If their parents weren't trying to release Bast, what were they trying to do!? We love Big Brother Carter. Feedback (01:25:46) Ian shares how he celebrated Percy's birthday with his kids. Robert makes us crave some blue smoothies. And Rachel shows off her awesome art skills! Thank you, Sarwat, for listening to our discussion of your book and being so supportive of the podcast! JustAMediaGuy wants an RRP crossover as badly as we do. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 97, where we'll do a Deep Dive on Horus before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 20! Prophecy Radio episode #76 dives into the late Lance Reddick's body of work, where we talk about his most iconic roles and which of his movies we watched most recently. As always, we also catch you up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including some updated information for the The Sun and the Star tour with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 3. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:03:29) Read Riordan has a women's history month spotlight on Gaea. This is your reminder that tickets for the NYC stop of the Sun and the Star book tour are now available. And if you can't see Mark Oshiro on tour for TSATS, be sure to find them on tour for Into the Light. Becky NEEDS you to listen to this Cinelinx interview with Roseanne A. Brown. There's a bit more news we're saving for next week, including a quiz and Rick's latest blog post. Lance Reddick (00:09:07) We talk about where Lance Reddick grew up and how he started off by studying music. The Yale School of Drama has had a lot of famous alumni at this point. Of course, Lance's breakout role was on The Wire, and we talk about how much we'd love to go back and watch it some day. And let's not forget Lost and Fringe. He also put out an album called Contemplations & Remembrances. We've talked a lot about his role as Charon, and also about his imposing presence and deep voice. That deep voice made made him the perfect choice for Commander Zavala in Destiny. Did you tear up when you read about how Destiny players saluted Zavala in the game on the day he died? Because we did. It's really too bad the Resident Evil Netflix show got cancelled. One of the best parts about digging through a prolific actor's IMDb page is searching for their forgotten roles. Did you know Lance made an appearance on The Nanny? Kristen didn't forget that he appeared in an episode of The West Wing. He also had several roles on various Law & Order and CSI shows—as do most actors these days. And let's not forget the throwback that is Beyoncé and Jay-Z's “03 Bonnie & Clyde.” If Karen gets the opportunity to talk about Numb3rs, she will. Can you guess which two roles Lance had within the Batman universe? It's time to talk about the Lance Reddick roles we were already familiar with. White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen kicked off two franchises that Lance Reddick has appeared in. And although Karen wouldn't recommend It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you can see Lance on that show, too. Now it's time to talk about the two new Lance Reddick movies we watched for this episode. Karen heard good things about The Guest, but Kristen isn't sure how she feels about it. Monster Party is not for people who don't like body horror. Lance might not have huge role in either of these movies, but like most of his other portrayals, he makes an impact. We talk about all of Lance's upcoming, unreleased roles. What are we expecting and looking forward to in Lance's portrayal of Zeus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Watch the video of Lance talking about his role as Zeus. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:58:58) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 3. We're so excited that we get Sadie's perspective in this chapter! Why are the police treating these kids like criminals? What's with the icy chill down Sadie's back? Is that inspector evil? Is he in on what's happening? Despite her complicated relationship with her dad, Sadie always wears her necklace. Have you seen an ankh before? Why even bother telling adults the truth if they're not going to believe you!? We talk a little bit about the ongoing conversation around ancient artifacts and repatriation. Was the inspector being super racist toward Carter? Did Carter tell the inspector some sort of cover story, or did the inspector lie to Sadie? Would Thalia and Sadie be best friends, or mortal enemies? Feedback (01:18:03) Henry calls us out on expecting answers in chapter 3. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 77, which will be a random catch-up episode and will include a portion of an interview with Mark Oshiro about The Sun and the Star before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 3. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #72 is all about Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee. We do a deep-dive into the latest Rick Riordan Presents book, with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section. We also tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including our live and in-the-moment reactions to the Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods cover reveal and accompanying interview with Rick Riordan. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:04:01) The Chalice of the Gods cover reveal dropped just as we started our news section. We go through the interview one question at a time, and talk about Victo Ngai's artwork for the cover. We can't stop saying nice things about Walker Scobell—we're so excited to see him as Percy and beyond. Read Riordan posted an article to celebrate Black heroes with fan-favorite titles from Rick Riordan Presents. We also find out Serwa Boateng by Roseanne A. Brown will be a trilogy! Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee (00:31:23) This book is total chaos, but it's purposeful and we kind of loved it. Don't forget to check out Karen's Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies book review. Stacey was so good at capturing a 12-year-old boy's voice. Kristen tells us her experience with listening to the audiobook, narrated by Brian Kim McCormick. But what is this story actually about?? Well, let us tell you. Winston is a bit chaotic and doesn't always look before he leaps—but we love that this becomes an asset for him. We take a moment to talk about sports. Which of Winston's friends did we like best? Phillipa broods for most of the book, but she still looks out for Winston whenever she can. She was totally a standout character, and we loved her relationship with Winston by the end of the book. Monroe totally surprised us! Was it surprising that Winston and Phillipa had such a good relationship with Coco? Okay, Not-Coco was SUPER, SUPER CREEPY though. Let's talk about Mr. Pang, because he's the definition of chaotic neutral. Spoilers begin at 01:03:50. Winston's journey to understanding what happened to his father was really nuanced. We were super worried about Monroe's character to begin with, but he ended up being pretty smooth! How do we feel about Dani's aunt? Either way, we loved Dani, and we can't wait to see more of her! Will there be more jealousy in the second book from Winston's teammates over Dani? Okay, it's time to talk about the Cowherd and the Cloud Weaver. It's cool that this story takes place inside Winston's everyday life. We'd never heard of Mirth and Sorrow before, and it made Mr. Pang's story so much more interesting. But Mr. Gu was hella suspicious the whole time. We're so glad that Winston's dog tags survived the process. Is Coco going to have trauma for the rest of her life? Will she have residue? Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters is coming in 2024! We definitely want to learn more about Chinese mythology and folklore. Does Winston have a leg up on Mr. Gu? How did we forget about Lucky!!?? Feedback (01:32:45) Thank you to the winners of our J. Maya giveaway! Karen goes over the results for the poll in which we asked everyone what their favorite short story was. Seaweedbrain Podcast is funnier than us, and we're okay with that. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 73, where we'll do a final sendoff for Percy Jackson and the Olympians before starting The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles #1). Narrator Soneela Nankani suffuses Serwa Boateng with strength and passion in Roseanne A. Brown's fantastic audiobook for middle-grade listeners. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the fun and thrills of getting to hear Serwa's story, rooted in Ghanaian folklore. Serwa has spent her life training with her parents to fight deadly adze, fierce vampires. Suddenly, she's sent to live with non-magical family members while her parents go on a deadlier mission, and she has to navigate middle school for the first time. As Serwa goes up against bullies and racist teachers, Nankani leans into her pain—but when an adze appears at school, Serwa finds a team of unlikely allies. Prophecy Radio episode #64 takes a look ahead at all the projects we know are coming up in 2023, as well as our goals for the year as a podcast! This week, we're skipping the news since we're recording ahead of time, and we'll catch up on that in a couple weeks. But don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. Looking ahead to 2023 (00:02:07) On January 10, The Sword of Hades will be re-released with a The Sun and the Star sneak peek. Are you going to pre-order it? One of the biggest books to come out this year will be The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, which will release on May 2. Here's everything we know about The Sun and the Star so far. We speculate what we might get when we read Chalice of the Gods, which comes out on September 26. And let's not forget the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! What books can we look forward to in 2023? First up on the list is Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, who will be releasing her first book under RRP. We loved Ballad & Dagger, so it should come as no surprise that Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older is at the top of our lists for 2023. Next up, we have The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, which will wrap up the Gifted Clans series. Roshani Chokshi is writing another book for RRP, this time about Filipino mythology! Obviously we can't wait for the second book in the Serwa Boateng series by Roseanne A. Brown. And maybe it won't be the last! We really need to read City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda…if only so we can read Fury of the Dragon Goddess. This fall, we can also expect Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee to hit store shelves. Moko Magic by Tracey Baptiste also promises to be great, and we wonder if there will be any similarities to Ballad & Dagger. And even though we haven't covered the books yet on the podcast, we're excited for the next book in the Shadow Bruja series by J.C. Cervantes. Many of the Rick Riordan Presents authors have OTHER books coming out outside of the imprint. Which ones are we most looking forward to? First up, Roshani Chokshi gives us a Valentine's Day treat with The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. And then there's Tehlor Kay Mejia's Lucha of the Night Forest, out on March 21. And then there's Into the Light by Mark Oshiro, which has mushrooms on the cover, so you know it's going to be cool. What announcements for Percy Jackson and the Olympians do we think we'll get in 2023? They have to tell us who Zeus and Poseidon are eventually, right?? Could we get a trailer by the end of the year? Will Percy Jackson attend SDCC? Will they be at D23 again? What if they did monster reveals!? Make sure you check out Aryan's show on Paramount+, Adventures in Wonder Park. When could we expect a season 2 greenlight? As far as the Red Pyramid film coming to Netflix, we can probably expect the script to be finished. But we know it's not coming out in 2023, so we need to be patient! What about a director? Or any casting announcements? What's Prophecy Radio hoping to accomplish next year? We want to bring as many exclusives to you as we possibly can! But we're super excited to start The Kane Chronicles. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 18. How can Clarisse survive being turned into a block of ice? Chiron standing in between Kronos and Mount Olympus is pretty badass. Annabeth gave it a good old college try, but it just wasn't enough. How could you not LOVE AND RESPECT Nico di Angelo until the ends of the Earth after this scene?? Seeing Demeter and Persephone in action was pretty cool. And speaking of badasses—Paul and Sally can totally handle their own! Why does Ethan Nakamura have such a place of honor amongst Kronos' army? We need more fanart from the Battle of Manhattan! Feedback (01:19:49) A positive guy says he's really looking forward to Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Meanwhile, Phoebe's got her heart set on The Sun and the Star. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 65, where we'll discuss the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #63 takes a look back on the last year to reminisce about all the announcements we witnessed and all we've accomplished in 2022! We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the livestream and the winner of our art giveaway, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 17. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:45) Thank you to everyone who tuned into the Percy Jackson for Good Winter Solstice Fundraiser! We let you know what kind of content to expect from us in the coming weeks. Shoutout to @JessycaJill, who won our art giveaway, and to @Hellredsky, for working with us on that! Graci Kim's tweet from the other day was bittersweet, and we take a moment to recognize all she's accomplished. Read Riordan also gave us some tips for how to throw a Camp Half-Blood-themed holiday party. End of the year round-up and reflection (00:10:26) Once again we really love that we switched over to one chapter an episode. We're very proud of our episode titles, but which ones are our favorites? What's the most interesting thing we learned in our pursuit of increasing our knowledge of mythology? Our memories are so bad, but we did think of a couple fun facts we enjoyed learning. And it's not just Greek mythology that fascinated us! The books Karen was talking about were Skin of the Sea and Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen. It's so hard to pick a favorite interview since everyone has been lovely, and we managed to talk about pretty much all of them. In particular, make sure you go back and listen to our chat with Roseanne A. Brown and Roshani Chokshi but also Daniel José Older. There are so many talented people in the Percy Jackson fandom, but we have to shout-out a couple of our favorite artists we've discovered this year. There's definitely been an Annabeth Chase art renaissance, and we are so here for it. All of the Sun and the Star artwork has been incredible, but a special shout-out to @AlessiaTrunfio (Kristen's choice picks: here and here). Obviously Sarah (@Hellredsky) is one of our favorites, and Soia also has a special place in our hearts. And how could we forget about @Velinxi. Were you as surprised by the length of our longest episode as we were? What about our shortest episode? Did we ever get under an hour? We got a lot of big announcements this year, but which ones stick out in our minds the most? It's so hard to concentrate when there's so much awesome Percy Jackson news in the world. Chalice of the Gods was a really shocking announcement, and we're still recovering. Surprise, surprise, we had a lot to talk about this episode. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:21) We're here to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 17. We're coming up on the end of this book pretty quickly!! We don't want to talk about Silena dying OR the fact that she was the traitor, but we have to. This was a great twist to the book, and it would've been hard to guess. Are we upset with Silena for being the traitor? CLARISSE DRAKON-SLAYER, FIRST OF HER NAME. The Blessing of Ares is super interesting, especially because it makes Clarisse momentarily invulnerable. Who does Percy summon with Mrs. O'Leary? Okay, why was Leneus' death so sad??? Aryan is going to be so great as Grover. We can see it so clearly. That elevator ride was a beautiful full circle moment. Is the Empire State Building guard mortal? We have another Will Solace sighting! How do we feel about Annabeth's confession that she no longer thinks Luke can be saved? Okay, hear us out: Rachel is Jacob. Percy is Bella. Mount Olympus is Renesmee. It would've been nice to see a conversation between Annabeth and Rachel after this moment. The moment at the hearth is what the sand dollar scene should've been like! Thank goodness Poseidon decided to listen to Percy. Kronos is near! Feedback (01:38:09) Daphne Olive totally agrees with us that Frozen II is the best Frozen. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 64, which will take a look ahead at everything coming in 2023! Prophecy Radio episode #62 does a Deep Dive on Chiron, trainer of heroes and the wisest of all centaurs! We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the Mark of Athena graphic novel cover reveal and all the latest on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series coming to Disney+, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 16. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:25) December 19 is your last day to enter our art giveaway! See instructions. And don't forget about the livestream fundraiser. Details here. Read Riordan gave us a last-minute holiday gift guide from the gods and demigods. We got the cover reveal for Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. We even got the cover reveal for the upcoming Mark of Athena graphic novel. Hazel's birthday was on December 17! Cool. Awkward. Black., edited by Karen Strong, features short stories from Roseanne A. Brown and Kwame Mbalia. Someone on Twitter also asked Becky about merchandise, and she talked a bit about how it all depends on the success of the show. As Percy Jackson and the Olympians goes into their winter break, we probably won't be getting the Zeus and Posiedon casting. In a now-deleted Tweet, Becky also talks about seeing a network cut of an episode, and how it's interesting to see what ends up being cut. Charlie Bushnell has officially wrapped on the first season. Jessica Parker Kennedy talks about playing Medusa. Becky and Stephanie Lurie also helped us figure out approximately how many books Rick might've signed in his lifetime. Ashlee will no longer be in charge of Rick's socials, but here's an update on what they'll be doing (and their dream jobs for the future). We also go through some new Goodreads answers from Rick Riordan. There are no current plans for a Daughter of the Deep sequel. That also goes for any additional Percy Jackson illustrated editions. Will we ever see Leo Valdez again? It turns out we'll learn how Will identifies in The Sun and the Star. Is there a Magnus Chase adaptation in our future? Could Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities ever get an adaptation? Deep Dive: Chiron (00:30:30) There weren't many references to Chiron in Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes and Greek Gods. The Party Ponies are much closer to what actual centaurs are like. Chiron is pretty different because he doesn't share the same ancestry as the other centaurs. There are several different origin stories for centaurs, and all of them are…weird. Did you know some centaurs are horned!? Why does it always come back to Zeus and Hera? Poor Chiron didn't have a very nice childhood. How do you teach a horse gymnastics!? We find out what Chiron is REALLY supposed to look like. We get into the age-old debate of how centaurs would wear pants. Who are some of the heroes Chiron trained? Karen discovers a fun fact about Disney's Hercules! How did Chiron die? What was Chiron like in the Percy Jackson books? More importantly, what did he look like? Why wasn't he a white stallion in any of the visual adaptations of the books? Chiron has a couple of pretty interesting abilities. What are some Chiron-related fun facts from the series? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:47:39) This week, we're reading The Last Olympian chapter 16. Did this chapter make us emotional? Did we find it exciting? Is it believable that Annabeth was able to fly the helicopter? This part is going to be SO exciting in the show. If this is Rachel without any training and focus, imagine what's coming next! Do we sympathize with Percy about being mad that Rachel told him he's not the hero? Is it weird that Chiron really wasn't worried when Rachel showed up with some possible prophetic thoughts and dreams? We're up to Prophecy Count #31! And Demeter and Persephone definitely stole the show. How do we feel about Nico's arguments to get Hades to help the Olympians? Seriously, Hades needs some family therapy. Is Ethan purposefully trying to stall Kronos? Is he having regrets? Does Prometheus think he's smarter than Kronos? That drakon is very large. And very close. Percy's anger throughout The Last Olympian is totally valid. We're constantly impressed with how good of a leader and strategist Percy is. Why was Silena the one to lead the charge with the Ares Cabin? We really have to wait until next week to talk about what sort of impact this will have on the book and all these characters. Feedback (01:21:09) Jessica writes in to tell us she totally agrees with us on the concept of Western Civilization. Phoebe thinks Dionysus is afraid of the Party Ponies, and we find that visual totally hilarious. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 63, which will look back on everything that happened in 2022 and all that we accomplished! Oh Muses! Bless our pronunciation skills and help us tell the story of how Anansi brought stories to humanity. In this episode, we encounter a set number of tasks that somehow grows, gourds, plantains instead of yams, unreliable narrators, trickery, a fearsome hunter, and a sticky doll. Everyone knows that Mmoatia's favorite food is really yams! We changed it so no one will try and trap forest spirits! Stay in school, kids, and leave the forest spirits alone. -- This episode was brought to you by Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown, available here: https://bit.ly/goserwa or wherever books are sold. -- National Geographic Kids Greeking Out is a kid-friendly retelling of some of the best stories from Greek mythology. Prophecy Radio episode #55 does another Monster Guide—this time on Procrustes, aka “The Stretcher,” who had a brief cameo in The Lightning Thief. The hosts tackle all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including a pre-Halloween blog post from Rick Riordan himself, as well as a reread and discussion of Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 9. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:03:59) Read Riordan posted several articles, like this one about seven terrifying monsters from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. And in case you were wondering, they also wrote about what the gods and demigods have planned for Halloween. Roseanne A. Brown also gave Rick Riordan some advice on hunting vampires. Did you see the Entertainment Weekly interview with Rick and the trio? We loved the story about Aryan walking like a goat! Let's talk about Rick's October 28 blog post. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THEY ARE FILMING THE LOTUS HOTEL AND CASINO SCENES. The real-time commentary while Rick was on set was pretty cool. It's so interesting to hear all the details of production. And it's exciting that they're looking to the end of the season now! How surprising is it that one episode could take a month or longer to finalize!? Rick also talks about his other film projects, including The Red Pyramid, Daughter of the Deep, and his pitch for “My Life as a Child Outlaw.” We're really excited about the potential for that last one because they could do so many things with it! In terms of writing projects, you gotta start with Chalice of the Gods. How cool would it be for Walker to be one of the beta readers!? Did you see what everyone dressed up as for Halloween? Monster Guide: Procrustes (00:17:31) The Procrustes myth is pretty straight forward, and if you remember what happened in the Lightning Thief, then you already know the important parts. But let's talk about the Ancient Greek myth anyway. What do you call an old-time hotel? If your host looks like he's out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, maybe turn around and find somewhere else to sleep for the night. Thankfully, Theseus was smart and chose the 10-foot bed after tricking Procrustes into the other one. This myth was pretty short, so we decided to find some fun facts. Maybe this story was based on a local serial killer? Make sure you add the word procrustean to your vocabulary! Isn't it interesting that Thomas Jefferson used this as an argument for religious freedom? We hate math, but for those who don't, you might also want to learn the term procrustean. And if you're not a fan of spiders, don't look up the genus Damastes. Did you know Procrustes was also supposed to show up in the Lightning Thief movie!? At least there's a high chance we'll see Procrustes this time around. Procrustes is not a clown, but you can picture him that way if you want to. All we want is for them to keep Crusty's fashion sense in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show. A six-foot bed isn't that out of the ordinary, is it? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:30:43) This week, we're discussing The Last Olympian chapter 9. We're only about halfway through the book, but this already feels like the climax of the story. There's so much left! We really miss Annabeth! She's hardly been in the book so far. Daedalus' laptop probably has special protections, right? Why didn't Chiron want to go to Mount Olympus? How much do we blame Clarisse for not showing up when Percy called the campers to action? Was Percy's moment to shine as the leader of the campers rushed? And was that on purpose? The Empire State Building security guard really tries to stay up on all the latest books, doesn't he? What might he be reading in Chalice of the Gods? Could all those campers really fit inside the elevator in the Empire State Building? Who's responsible for choosing the elevator music? Prophecy Count #26! What was so important about this particular vision/flashback? It's hard not to feel bad for Annabeth and what she's going through now that Luke has sided with Kronos. The Hermes we meet in Sea of Monsters feels so different from the one we see in Last Olympian. Forty demigods defending all of Manhattan? Yeah, sure, why not. Okay, Plan 23 must be risky. More vague advice from the gods? Must be a day ending in ‘y'! Morpheus is back, baby! It's invasion time. Feedback (01:04:23) Henry writes in to suggest the dog Rick was talking about meeting could be Cerberus. We all still want Luke to have Egyptian blood, but it's just not meant to be. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 56, which is a complete mystery to everyone, including your intrepid hosts. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #54 dives into the latest news in the Riordanverse, including three—yes, you heard right—THREE blog posts from Rick Riordan. This includes updates on Rick Riordan Presents, the latest casting information for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show, as well as the announcement of Percy Jackson Book 6 (aka Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods). We also return to our Percy Jackson reread with a discussion of The Last Olympian chapter 8. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:28) If you haven't already, be sure to listen to our interview with Roseanne A. Brown about Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. Roseanne is also doing an educator giveaway of the book, ending 10/28. Read Riordan put up another OTP Timelines article—this time about Leo and Calypso. This isn't really news, but we love Angie Thomas and Rick Riordan's friendship. Blog-a-palooza (00:06:56) We have a lot of blog posts to talk about this week—and one extra than we expected! There's so much awesome news, so let's just get into it. First up is the October 9 blog post, titled “News from the Riordanverse October 2022.” You can still pre-order signed copies of The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro from Barnes & Noble. We're pretty excited that Rick mentions there could be more Will and Nico books in the future. We talk about some Trials of Apollo spoilers and how it could affect The Sun and the Star. What other characters do you think we'll get to see in this book? Don't forget about The Lords of Night by J.C. Cervantes! And how could we forget about The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi!? It's so interesting that Filipino mythology is one of the most requested topics for them to explore. Rick also gives us a few updates from the set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. We learn roughly where we are in the adaptation of The Lightning Thief. Rick says more nice things about Walker and Leah, and we love to hear it. We guess as to which on-set dog Rick recently met. Rick also has some very interesting insight into the production process and how much he's learned about making a film/television adaptation. It's time to quiz Kristen on more TV/film lingo! Next up: The October 13 blog post, “More Casting News for PJOTV.” Jessica Parker Kennedy has been cast as Medusa. Kristen has definitely seen her in quite a few different shows. She also seems to be a Jon Steinberg darling, and it's exciting that they've worked together so many times! Suzanne Cryer has been cast as Echidna, and she has A LOT of TV credits to her name. Like, a lot. You've probably seen her in something. Her Instagram post about the announcement was so beautiful and heartwarming. Lastly, we've got Adam Copeland as Ares, and is there a more perfect person to step into this role? Maybe this is a good excuse for Karen to finally watch Vikings. Lastly, we've got the October 18 blog post about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. Karen reads you the entire blog post so you don't miss A SINGLE DETAIL. Make sure you also read the Publisher's Weekly article, which offers a few additional details. Rick was REALLY trying to get the PJOTV off the ground, and we're here for it. How do we feel about calling Chalice of the Gods Percy Jackson 6? When does this book take place? Okay, but, like, is this the first in a trilogy…? Yeah, we're gonna buy this no matter what, you don't have to worry about that. We're PRETTY sure no one is going to die in this book, so don't panic! Rick reminds us just how much of a big deal Percy Jackson and the Olympians really is. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:06:37) This week, we're discussing The Last Olympian chapter 8. It feels like it's been ages, but we're back! That windowless, doorless room is cruel and unusual punishment. Why has Percy been dreaming of Rachel throughout this book? Who does that power belong to? We liked the countdown with Typhon instead of racing the clock against another solstice. This episode proves we need to work on our United States geography. Let's talk about this whole situation between Percy and Nico. One thing's for sure, we're always going to talk about how much we love Mrs. O'Leary. Achilles seems to have learned a lot from his death. Okay, we find out the real reason why Luke was able to host Kronos. We love Nico so much, but he's driving us crazy in this book. Is it weird that Percy submerges completely in the River Styx? We loved the moment when Percy pins Hades, but maybe he should've made sure the river thing worked first. Rick didn't have to include that moment with Hades' cloak, but we're glad he did. Feedback (01:33:54) Ian wants to remind everyone to go listen to our Daughter of the Deep review if you've read the book! He also has some clever ideas for the Percy Jackson Monopoly pieces. Sword of Avalon also has some great ideas to improve our Demigod Life game. Thanks for the kind words, too! Henry wrote us a monster of a letter, and we tackle a couple of the most important sections. We really love doing chapters one at a time, even if The Red Pyramid is a bigger book. Thanks for correcting a few timeline things for us! We're old and our memories are bad. We want Tom Sturridge as Morpheus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 5! Henry also gives us a great idea for our 100th episode. Is Nico friendly with Anubis, the Egyptian God of Death? He also has a tech question for us, and we need your help! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 55, which will do a Monster Guide on Procrustus. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #53 discusses Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown, as well as talks to the author herself—who's also a massive Percy Jackson fan! Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, and provide a little bit of an update about what's going on in their lives. But don't worry, the podcast isn't going anywhere! There is no chapter review this week. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:16) We provide a little bit of an update in our lives, which includes the next chapter of our story for both of us. Suffice it to say we're a little stressed. But don't worry! The podcast isn't going anywhere. The Lords of Night by J.C. Cervantes is out in the world! Being the tricksiest author at Rick Riordan Presents is quite the accomplishment. Read Riordan also wants you to meet Monty, a Jaguar Warrior, and catch up with A.P., the Mayan God of Death. How amazing would it be if Walker Scobell showed up in Deadpool 3? Did you catch the Percy Jackson reference in Bullet Train? Jason Gray-Stanford appears to have been cast in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown (00:18:56) Beware of spoilers if you're trying to go into the book without knowing anything! What is this book about? Doesn't Mean Girls meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer sound like such a good combination? What kind of character is Serwa? How do we feel about her parents? We have a lot of thoughts. At least Boulder is around? It's okay not to be perfect, and Serwa certainly teaches us this lesson. We love how complex Roxy is. But her story is also about immigration and deportation, making it a pretty heavy—but important!—topic to talk about. Eunju is a complicated character, and it was interesting to see behind the mask. It's so refreshing when creators allow girls and women be angry! How could you NOT love Mateo? It took us a little longer to love Gavin, but once you understand where he's coming from, it really makes a difference! Everyone's magic fits them so well. The adze are kind of scary, and we never thought we'd be afraid of fireflies. Learning about the adinkra has been so interesting. Make sure you look in the back of your book to learn more! SPOILER SECTION STARTS AT 01:04:44. We talk about who the adze was and whether it was obvious. Mrs. Dean is THE ABSOLUTE WORST, and it makes us so angry. But at least we have Mr. Riley, who is her antithesis in every possible way. Mr. Riley and Roxy's ancestry is so interesting. Okay, let's talk about the BIG spoiler here because it's a doozy. Is her aunt as bad as everyone thinks she is? Is Serwa the Midnight Drum? There is SO MUCH to look forward to in Book 2. Roseanne A. Brown Interview (01:25:31) We're SO excited to talk to Roseanne because not only is she a huge Percy Jackson fan, but she's got some love for Teen Wolf, too. First up—what are her go-to snacks when she's writing? We learn that the length of an edit letter does not correlate to how much work you have to do on your second draft. Yes, there were people writing fanfiction on DeviantArt back in the day. No, we will never get to see her Percy Jackson fanfiction. Booooooo. Can you believe Mrs. Dean is based on someone Roseanne knows!? Wait until you hear who Mr. Riley is based on… Roseanne explains what the treasure hunting aspect of the book would've looked like. Making Serwa already a part of the world of Slayers was an intentional choice Roseanne made when writing the book. She tells us one of the crazy mythological creatures we'll see in Book 2. Three guesses which of the kids is Roseanne's favorite. We have an amazing discussion about how it's important to talk to kids about racism and how the book doesn't pull any punches when it comes to this topic. Who would Roseanne's Greek godly parent be? And she has the godly parents for each of the kids picked out! Which Rick Riordan Presents world would Roseanne like to live in? Is Roseanne excited for the Teen Wolf movie? You want some teasers for Book 2!? What about the other projects Roseanne is working on? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 54, which will discuss the latest blog posts from Rick Riordan. Prophecy Radio episode #52 explores some ideas for both Percy Jackson-themed board games and original concepts. Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, including the Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure cover reveal, as well as discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 7. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:05) Don't forget that Carlos Hernandez is now OFFICIALLY a Marvel Comics writer!! Did you see the GIANT billboard for Ballad & Dagger in NYC? Read Riordan got Ren Santiago to write a blog post for them. We also got to meet Edison from Lords of Night by J.C. Cervantes, which comes out October 4. Happy birthday to Leah Jeffries (aka Annabeth), who turned 13 on September 25! We've decided on #SolangeloBook as the hashtag for The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure. Rick also wrote a September 28 blog post! We discuss the Sun and the Star cover reveal, as well as its artist, Khadijah Khatib. The US and UK release dates will both be May 2, 2023—it's really not far away! Mark and Rick will be doing an IN-PERSON tour! Could there be more spinoff novels?? We talk about Nico and Will's fate and whether we have to be worried. Oh, maybe we should read the Sun and the Star synopsis, huh? Don't forget to pre-order The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure! Percy Jackson Board Games (00:30:50) We're starting off with which existing board games we could theme to Percy Jackson. First up? Clue! What would we use as the different rooms in the mansion? Kristen's also got some ideas for a Percy Jackson Monopoly game. How would you organize the gods? What would represent the railroads? Caoimhe also has some excellent suggestions for the games pieces. There are a lot of ways to adapt The Game of Life for the Percy Jackson world. A Guess Who game would actually be really fitting for the demigods. This may even entice non-Percy Jackson fans to pick it up! If there's a Harry Potter version of a game, there can be a Percy Jackson version of the game. We come up with which gods would be on which special UNO cards. Apples to Apples is like a family-friendly version of Cards Against Humanity. Does Charging Rhinos always win in YOUR game? It's bonus time! Karen thinks Forbidden Island/Forbidden Desert would make for a great Percy Jackson-themed game. And if you want to play a Percy Jackson game right now, you could make your own Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Let's talk original games! Should we be giving these ideas away for free? Camp Half-Blood Chronicles balances social points and fighting experience to see who comes out on top at the end of the summer. Kristen explains all the dating games she and her sister used to play, and it blows Karen's mind. You have to say QUEST! with all the enthusiasm you can muster. Kristen explains what it would take to Outwit the Oracle. Karen was a little overzealous and came up with one more original game called Underworld, and yes, it borrows some ideas from Hades. Yeah, we could really talk about this topic forever, but it's time to move on! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian discussion (01:15:48) It's that time of the week—let's discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 7. Okay, this part where Grover was in Central Park kind of came out of nowhere… Grover has matured a lot over the course of these books, and we love it. Two months is better than forever, but Grover's been out for a WHILE. Morpheus is an interesting character, especially after having watched Netflix's Sandman. Okay, Nico tricking Percy…is this a big deal or not? But why didn't Nico just talk to Percy?? We are definitely not a fan of Hades in this chapter. Mrs. O'Leary continues to be the MVP, though. What's everything we learned about Nico's mom and his childhood? It's a much bigger conversation than we can have right now, but there's a lot of (valid) criticisms about the depiction of Hades and his children. Hades' plan seems ill-advised, to say the least. We FINALLY find out who the lawyer was that freed Nico and Bianca. Why couldn't Hades just let Percy go in four years!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 53, where we'll discuss Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #50 celebrates by taking a look back over the last year and revisiting our very first episode! Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, including some followup on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer, as well as discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 5. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:13) The Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer has a ton of views on both Twitter and YouTube. Let's jump right into Rick's September 17 blog post. He shares lots of behind-the-scenes moments, including some fanboying over Harvey Guillén. Rick also addressed those comments about the English and Greek letters on the Camp signs in the most Rick way, and we come up with a new headcannon. As for those symbols on the cabins? They're something new, and we spend some time theorizing about what they could mean. We totally agree those new CBH shirts are fire, and we can't wait to purchase them. Much to Karen's delight, we are getting a brand new Roshani Chokshi book from Rick Riordan Presents, titled The Spirit Mirror. Speaking of books, if you're looking for books like Percy Jackson, Everyday Reading has a list for you. Okay, we're bringing the tone down a little to talk about something a bit more serious: Roseanne A. Brown's comments about the review bombing she's been getting on Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. In a similar vein, Tracey Baptiste (author of the upcoming Moko Magic duology from RRP) also spoke about the backlash to the Little Mermaid trailer and why representation matters. (P.S. The book Karen was talking about is called Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen and was inspired by her Nigerian heritage.) Ending on a high note, we mention Read Riordan's article where the gods give back-to-school advice. More importantly, however, we get to take a quiz to find out which Rick Riordan Presents heroine we are. 50th Episode Celebration Extravaganza (00:40:54) We take a trip down memory lane and look back on how far we've come from Prophecy Radio episode 1. Thank goodness we fixed up our audio! This podcast has so much untapped potential, even still to this day! We have a lot more to go, and we hope you'll stick around to enjoy it with us. Yes, we're still obsessed with our logo, and no we're never going to shut up about it. We were excited to find a community with our podcast, but we never expected to gain so many new friends in our fellow Riordanverse podcasters. Where were we in terms of the news this time last year? We didn't even have the greenlight yet! James Bobin wasn't hired. There was an open-call for Percy Jackson. Back then, they were aiming for a 2023 delivery, and that's unfortunately been moved back to 2024. We're still waiting on the Kane Chronicles movie, but at least now we have a better idea of where they are in the process. In 2021, we were still waiting on Cursed Carnival, Daughter of the Deep, and Tristan Strong Keeps Punching—all of which have been successful releases! The way we did our chapter reviews is pretty different from how we do them now. Thank you to everyone who writes into us every week. We really appreciate you all! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian discussion (00:51:53) It's time to jump into Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 5. We're really going to miss Beckendorf—along with everyone at Camp. Mrs. O'Leary was hilarious in this chapter. Percy is not immune to dog drool, unfortunately. Leneus was so. annoying. Percy would totally know if Grover died. Was Percy out of character in this chapter? Nico being able to talk to Beckendorf…that's heavy. We still want to know more about Nico's plan. It's frustrating that the only reason Percy agrees is because Annabeth called him a coward. It's time to shadow travel!! Feedback (01:15:58) A listener writes in to correct one of our interpretations of the teaser trailer. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 51, where we'll do a Monster Guide on Echidna and Chimera. Just in time for Halloween best-selling author Roseanne A. Brown brings us the story of a vampire slayer uprooted to suburban Maryland. How does a girl who was trained to be a vampire slayer adjust to regular life in middle school? Not so well. Serwa will make big mistakes, earn detention, and even make a trip to the underworld before she learns the shocking truth about herself and her family. For most kids, catching fireflies is a fun summer activity. For twelve- year-old Serwa Boateng, it's a matter of life and death. That's because Serwa knows that some fireflies are really adze, shapeshifting vampires from the forests of Southeastern Ghana. Adze prey on the blood of innocents, possessing their minds and turning them into hulking monsters, and for generations, slayers like Serwa and her parents have protected an unknowing public from their threats. Serwa is the best adze slayer her age, and she knew how to use a crossbow before she could even ride a bike. But when an obayifo (witch) destroys her childhood home while searching for a drum, do Serwa's parents take her with them on their quest to defeat her? No. Instead, they dump Serwa with her hippie aunt and cryptic-obsessed cousin in the middle of Nowheresville, Maryland "for her own safety." Now, instead of crossbows and battle armor, she's dealing with mean girls and algebra, and for the first time in her life she doesn't have to carry a staff everywhere she goes, which is, kind of nice, actually.

Prophecy Radio episode #49 does a complete breakdown of the 2022 D23 Expo event, in which we got a Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer. Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, including a new project from John Rocco, as well as discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 4. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:04) Haley and John Rocco have some new books coming out! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown is officially out in the world! You can read an excerpt on Read Riordan. Pahua and the Soul Stealer by Lori M. Lee is now out in paperback. For better or worse, Aphrodite wrote a guide to love on Read Riordan. Whew, that was fast, but we want to get to the good stuff! D23 and the Percy Jackson teaser trailer (00:04:33) Karen makes a public apology for ever doubting they would release a Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer. Is it actually surprising we got a teaser trailer this early? We're kind of shocked we've gotten no god casting in the meantime! Karen goes through her experience waiting for the Percy Jackson segment of the D23 Branded Television panel. By the way, American Born Chinese seems like something Percy Jackson fans would enjoy! We discuss the two mini clips we got from the panel's montage intro. That first shot of Percy—where in the story could it be from? Then we definitely got a shot of Sally and Percy out in the rain. Next up, we discuss the concept art for the Hermes Cabin. Is the D23 Disney Branded Television panel online anywhere? If we find it, we'll link to it! Grover is the protector.

Prophecy Radio episode #48 assigns superlatives to our favorite Percy Jackson crossover ideas. Which property would make for the best TV show? The worst? The bloodiest!? Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, including Rick Riordan's presence at D23, as well as discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 3. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:42) Don't miss Roseanne A. Brown's book tour for Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. And don't forget to visit Read Riordan to meet Asaase Yaa. Which gods and demigods do you think have the most dysfunctional relationships? Check out these awesome answers from Rick on Goodreads. How do we feel about Rick's feelings about fanfiction?? Could he make a cameo in Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Why did he choose Mark Oshiro to write the Solangelo book with him? It's probably for the best that Rick's not writing books about African gods. We're always happy to hear Rick is optimistic for another season of the show. But what about another RRP anthology? Guess what? Rick's gonna be on a panel at D23! And yes, it will be livestreamed. Percy Jackson Superlatives/Crossover (00:20:12) We're trying something a little different today with this episode, but it ended up being pretty fun! First up is which property would crossover with Percy Jackson the most seamlessly? Who here remembers the movie Sky High? Blood of Zeus also seems like an obvious answer. Nothing would be more intense than a Game of Thrones/Percy Jackson crossover. Stranger Things would also be a good fit, but pretty dark for everyone involved. When we said most ridiculous, we meant it. What would be more hilarious, watching Grover or Clarisse immersed in the world of Zootopia? Could Riverdale get more ridiculous with the inclusion of Percy Jackson? Okay, when we say worst fit, we mean the world that wouldn't gel with Percy's universe. Kristen nails this one on the head with Star Trek. For some of the same reasons, Karen thinks Percy & Co. wouldn't do well on Mythic Quest. Is it weird that Kristen's bloodiest show would actually be an EXCELLENT fit for the Percy Jackson universe and Camp half-Blood? Would the Winchesters hunt down the demigods or ally themselves with them? How amazing would a Doctor Who/Percy Jackson crossover be?? Imagining Percy and his friends in the world of The 100 gets our creative juices flowing. We had the genius idea to end on the most delightful crossover scenarios. How perfect would the demigods fit into Pawnee, Indiana!? Okay, but can we get a show like The Good Place but about the Underworld? But really, let's do a Greek demigod version of Modern Family. Our listeners also wrote in to tell us some of their crossover ideas. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian discussion (01:12:39) It's time to jump into The Last Olympian chapter 3! This book feels different from the other ones. It's a lot less hopeful in the beginning. Losing Beckendorf is a huge blow to Camp. How do we feel about Annabeth asking about Luke? Will this ACTUALLY be Percy's last trip to the attic? You're telling us the Great Prophecy was RIGHT THERE THE WHOLE TIME? Whatever Clarisse is upset about, it has to be big enough to do it in front of Silena right after they found out Charlie died. We're not counting this in our Prophecy Count, by the way, since we heard it once already (in part). Has Percy already fulfilled part of the prophecy? We wonder who the spy could possibly be… Percy says there's a bigger threat than Typhon, and we're inclined to believe him. Is Percy gonna tell his mom about the prophecy? Feedback (01:33:30) Laura is loving our one-chapter-a-week-discussions, too! She also has some mythology-themed book recs on the way. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 49 (to be determined…). Prophecy Radio episode #47 does a Deep Dive on the god Dionysus, exploring the origins of his myth and the role he plays in the Percy Jackson series. Karen and Kristen also tackle all the latest news, including the announcement of a brand-new author joining the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, as well as discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 2. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:02) We've got another OTP Timelines article from Read Riordan, and this time it's about Frank and Hazel. We also get a chance to meet Boulder from Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting—not to be confused with the Boulder from ATLA. P.S. Don't forget to check out the ReWatchable podcast and look for our Avatar: The Last Airbender round. Also, happy birthday to Roseanne A. Brown!! HUGE congratulations to Sajni Patel for joining the Rick Riordan Presents family with A Drop of Venom. It's wins all around as Carlos Hernandez joins the Marvel comics family, too! Deep Dive: Dionysus (00:10:13) It's time to meet Dionysus—or, as he might be better known, Bacchus. As is the case with a few of the other gods, Bacchus' birth was…interesting. We also discuss the fact that Dionysus was known as Bacchus to both the Greeks AND the Romans. Unfortunately for Bacchus' aunt and uncle, Hera found out where they were, and it did NOT end well. Does she have any morals? Any regrets?? Wouldn't it be amazing if Dionysus led the meetings for the LGBTQIA+ Club at Camp Half-Blood? Also his superpowers are pretty awesome. Was Ampelos a friend or, like, a friend? Now we're gonna be sad every time we eat a grape. :( At least Bacchus knew how to party—and his followers took it VERY seriously. Were any other gods worshipped to the same level as Bacchus? His revels were LEGENDARY—and very deadly. And those maenads? On another level. Do we feel bad for Pentheus? Can gods just make up powers when they need them most? Ariadne had a relationship glow-up when she went from Theseus to Dionysus. Did you know Dionysus invaded India!? What about Mr. D from the Percy Jackson books? Dionysus is one of the gods we see the most in the series. He's got a lot of pretty interesting powers. Do you want to know more about Dionysus too? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian discussion (00:35:06) It's time to jump into The Last Olympian chapter 2! Prophecy Count #23! We're definitely curious about these Titans. TELL US THE PLAN, RICK. Under other circumstances, it would be so exciting that Percy got to visit the underwater palace. This is not the same Poseidon we've seen before. Rick really talks about the complexities of war in this book, and it's only chapter 2!! Is Poseidon sometimes a good father? We legit forgot that we didn't know the whole of the Great Prophecy yet. Oh, hey, don't forget about the spy at Camp. Speaking of, we're so excited to go back to CBH! Feedback (00:58:56) Nicolaas tells us he likes the one chapter approach, and we're definitely feeling it, too! Laura also took us on a walk with her puppy. Please send us pictures of your pets! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 48 (to be determined…). This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #44 discusses Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia, and the hosts even get to interview the author about the third and final book in the series, Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows. They also tackle all the latest news in the Rick Riordan universe, including the latest blog post from the author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:34) Dior Goodjohn's Are You Afraid of the Dark season 3 is airing right now on Nickelodeon! For a moment, Karen forgets how to watch real TV. It looks like Percy Jackson and the Olympians is filming the Capture the Flag scene. Make sure you check out the cover reveal for the Maze of Bones graphic novel. Roseanne A. Brown wants to remind you that she did NOT write Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting under the patronage of an eccentric professor. We discuss Rick's August 6 blog post. There are a lot of books coming out from Rick Riordan Presents! We get an update on the Solangelo book—including possible tour plans and Rick's reaction to the cover. Mark Oshiro's book with the cool mushroom cover is called Into the Light. What's this other book project Rick is working on?? Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows is officially out in the world! We're super excited for the Paola Santiago adaptation! Tehlor wrote a really beautiful letter saying goodbye to the series. Abuela has some tips and tricks if you happen to find yourself in possession of an arma del alma. But more importantly…which Paola Santiago character are you? Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia (00:25:10) It's time to talk about the first book in the Paola Santiago series! By the way, the narrator for these books (Frankie Corzo) is REALLY good. How did Kristen feel about reading River of Tears for the first time? We definitely know how to pronounce the Gila River. Paola reminds us a little of Aru Shah, tbh. Science girls for the win! This book really nails the boy/girl middle school dynamic. Paola's mom really doesn't serve much of a role in this book except to cause some friction for the main character. Abuela might not have a huge role, but she's a pretty important character. We included Emma, even though she doesn't feature too prominently in this book. Look, it's been a while since Karen read this one. Give her a break. WE DEFINITELY TALK ABOUT BRUTO. Is Riptide…an arma del alma? Would you like to live in Limbo for your whole life? Which of the monsters did we like most? Put us down as not fans of the mano pachona. Karen scars Kristen with images of the the lechuza. The SPOILER SECTION starts at 00:58:40 La Llorona's castle was pretty amazing. Kristen was personally attacked by Marisa. Okay, we know La Llorona has a reputation, but why is she so MEAN? Abuela is a total badass, and we are HERE for it. There's not too much to say about Los Niños de la Luz…for now. Interview with Tehlor Kay Mejia (01:11:05) Following on the heels of the Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows release, we spoke with Tehlor Kay Mejia about the series as a whole. If you've read Paola Santiago, you won't be too surprised by her choice of go-to snacks. Is there an editing critique that she has the most trouble with? Tehlor talks a bit about reconnecting with her culture's folklore and how different families connect to different ones in a variety of ways. When did Tehlor come up with the idea for Paola Santiago? Are any of the characters in these books based on people she knows? How did Tehlor make sure the books weren't too scary for her audience? Which scenes hit the cutting room floor? Are there any monsters she wishes could've been included? And, more importantly, would she ever write more stories in this vein so she could include them? After getting Naomi on her character quiz, we ask what similarities and differences she has with her. Is it TOO personal to ask what kind of nightmares El Cucuy would show someone? Out of all three books, which scene is the MOST Paola Santiago? We find out the answer to one of our favorite questions to ask—who would be Tehlor's godly Greek parent? What's the best book she's read lately? And, of course, we have to ask how it feels now that Paola Santiago is getting its own adaptation! Does Tehlor have any upcoming projects she can talk about? What else is on that author bucket list of hers? Feedback (01:29:53) We get another email from Caoimhe, who tells us about tír na nóg and Setanta (sorry for butchering the pronunciation!!). We're definitely going to do future episodes about more than Greek myths. How did Kristen and Karen first meet? Caoimhe's friend Eimear also did a little drawing for us, and it's so good! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 45, in which we'll celebrate Percy Jackson's birthday and discuss “Percy Jackson and the Bronze Dragon” and “Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades.” This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. We discuss A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown, which is based on Egyptian mythology. We have some thoughts about character development and world building. We'd like to connect with our characters, and have some strong opinions about how family relationships can help us do that.
Prophecy Radio episode #42 does a Monster Guide on Medusa, one of Greek mythology's most infamous (and interesting) creatures. The hosts also tackle the latest news, including the trailer for Walker Scobell's new movie Secret Headquarters, as well as read Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapters 17 and 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:46) If you or someone you know is a Black educator/teacher/librarian, Roseanne A. Brown has an opportunity for you! How well do you know these Heroes of Olympus quotes? The Empire State Building is a huge Percy Jackson fan. Did you see the trailer for Walker Scobell's new movie, Secret Headquarters? Monster Guide: Medusa (00:09:55) We've talked a little bit about Medusa before, but let's do a refresher on her origins. But what about Perseus? What do we know about him? Life hack: Do not swear on the River Styx. It's hard enough to get ONE god's attention, but Perseus was working with, like, four of them. Is it fair that everyone was always trying to kill the Gorgons? Why didn't Athena just lift the curse herself??? Should the gods be more merciful and able to show weakness? What if Medusa's head could turn people into any kind of stone you wanted? How long was Medusa alive after she was turned into a monster? Some of these questions are outside the scope of this podcast. If you thought being pregnant for nine months was long enough… So, Percy is related to Blackjack in a very interesting way. Do we still feel bad for Medusa? Why were people so scared of her if she never left her cave!? Is there any sort of historical context that could have given birth to this myth? How do we feel about Freud's psychoanalysis of Medusa's story? What about modern feminist interpretations and what kind of symbol she's become? If Medusa didn't consent to Poseidon's advances, would that explain why she doesn't kill women in any of the myths? Do you have any further reading regarding Medusa's transformation into a feminist icon? You can always rely on good old nihilism to put a little pep in your step. If you liked listening to our chat about Medusa, go check out the Medusa episode of the Monstrous Woman Podcast. It's so interesting how Medusa went from a monstrous woman to a beautiful femme fatale. Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (00:43:39) Stick around if you want to listen to us talk about Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 17. Look, Karen cried a lot. Please don't judge her. We're really trying not to take sides between Annabeth and Percy because they BOTH have very valid feelings. It's nice to see Annabeth grieving Luke and not just pushing it aside. Thank goodness they decided to go after Grover and Tyson! That scene with Pan was…intense. Why didn't Pan give Grover proof that they met? Go read The Lost Years of Merlin by T.A. Barron! There are also a ton of awesome nature documentaries on Disney+! Make sure you check out America the Beautiful, narrated by Michael B. Jordan. Let's talk about Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 18. Does Percy have feelings for Rachel Elizabeth Dare? Why is Nico listening to Annabeth all of a sudden? Will anyone on the Council of Cloven Elders believe what Grover saw? We loved that every cabin had a job!! We discuss Chiron's surprise at Luke and Kronos' fusion, given what we know about the Kane Chronicles. This battle was INTENSE, and let's just remember that Percy is only FOURTEEN. Nico is such a badass. Okay, but what was up with Grover's cry at the end!? Did we feel bad for Daedalus in the end? The implication of all of this and what will happen after IS SO HEAVY. Karen explains the plot of Ghost. …Spoilers? Feedback (01:27:16) Henry writes in to give us a little more insight into the Daedalus/Perdix/Icarus storyline. Should an entire episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians be used to explore what happens on Ogygia? Did you know Nina Dobrev played FOUR doppelgangers? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 43, in which we'll react to ILM's upcoming documentary Light & Magic. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome back, coven! In this episode we are discussing A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown, the sequel to A Song of Wraths and Ruin which we talked about all the way back in episode 39! This book picks up right were the last one left off with Karina on the run and Malik living in the palace with Hanan who was brought back from the dead, and Fareed basically in control of everything. Chaos does indeed ensue! Content warning for discussions of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and miscarriage. Take care of yourself folks, and if you don't feel up to listening to this episode at the moment, feel free to come back to it later or skip this one. We'll talk about it in the “Kill Your Darlings” segment towards the end and provide a warning there, too [37:11-39:48]. The Trevor Project hotline suicide prevention hotline This season of the show is quickly wrapping up! Recommend if you like… [read-alikes mostly, but also other media, film, tv, etc.] A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron Hyena is a trickster like Coyote (Trail of Lightning) or Loki (Norse mythology). This is a common type of god in many different belief systems. Here are a couple of different resources, since it's really cool to see how they overlap! [cw: miscarriage] There is mention at the beginning of the book that Hanan and Karina's mother had been through a few miscarriages, and this is a YA book, but I think it's important for people to know that 10-20% of pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and because we don't talk about that, many people who experience them feel like it's their fault. So I appreciated this mention in a book for young people who may have had loved ones who experienced a miscarriage or they may have experienced them themselves, so it's important to have these kinds of discussions. [cw: suicide and self harm] We see Malik using self harm as a way to control his mind, and the god living there, and thinking about killing himself. This is another thing that I think can be an important topic to talk about with young people. I hope people know there are people who are there for you and want to help you, and if you need help, please reach out. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then talk about the dreaded Sea of Monsters movie, as well as kick off their Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse reread with chapters 1 and 2. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:39) We've got a huge episode in front of us, so let's get into it! Sarwat Chadda is still working on City of the Plague Gods 2, but we're a little confused about the title. Kwame Mbalia and Roseanne A. Brown talk about what Black History Month means to them. If only our days in the office looked like Rick's. Tehlor Kay Mejia is writing her bi disaster adult debut, and we are very excited. Don't forget to check out Karen's Reclaim the Stars book review. Ashlee Latimer is giving away a copy of her new picture book! We're surprised that Rick already has a new blog post up, but we're excited to get into it! There is no typical work day for Rick, which sounds awesome and stressful. We talk a bit about all the script edits they're currently working on. The Solangelo book is going to be LONG, and we're here for it. We get an interesting insight into how they start to break an episode. Apparently, Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ will be eight episodes long. Rick also broke his toe, and we hope he feels better soon! Writing is never really done, it's just due. We can't imagine how many submission tapes they're going through—but it's a lot. Soon, we're going to talk about our dream cast for the adult roles in the show. How long do we think the filming for this show will take? Rick wrote Goodreads reviews for Ballad & Dagger and Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. Becky does a lot, too! We see you, Becky. Thank you. Sea of Monsters movie (00:32:06) Did we like the Sea of Monsters movie better than the Lightning Thief movie? It was nice to see Thalia turning into the tree, but that opening was so dark. Let's meet all the new Sea of Monsters characters. Clarisse was pretty great, but we hope TV!Clarisse is a little stockier. We really missed the chariot races. Is there anyone who doesn't love Stanley Tucci? We kind of didn't mind that someone else is playing Chiron in this movie. The tone was definitely better in this movie. But how did we feel about Tyson? Have you ever thought about how a cyclops would wear sunglasses? And the whole barrier situation doesn't really work in the movie. The Colchis Bull fight had its highs and lows. We're still disappointed about Grover's storylines in these movies. Was it weird that Mr. D took over part of Tantalus' plot in the movie? How did we feel about the oracle? Kronos' aesthetic was…a choice. Nathan Fillion was truly an inspired choice for Hermes. Did Annabeth maim Thalia? Can the show create as good a Rainbow as the movie??? Did the filmmakers not know how to pronounce Riordan? Who doesn't love Ron Perlman as Hellboy?? Tyson's death in the movie was so pointless. Ugh, this was not our Annabeth. Not at all. The battle at the end with Kronos was so unnecessary. Does anyone here watch Station 19? Did we like Thalia at the end of the movie? How do we feel about the Percy voiceover? We are officially done with the movies! Chapter Reviews (01:24:06) Let's get into Titan's Curse chapter 1! Does this chapter start rather abruptly? We were shocked to learn Nico and Bianca were introduced so early! Controlling the Mist is a pretty big deal. We love book!Annabeth so much. The Ground Zero reference was effective. Dancing is hard. Time for Titan's Curse chapter 2! Shout-out to Onward for teaching us what a manticore is. We need a Rules for the Empathy Link pamphlet. The Hunters of Artemis definitely have great posture. We really wanted to reach the next chapter after that ending! Do your homework! And read lots of MG and YA books. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 23, where we'll do another What If…? episode centered around Sea of Monsters. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz talk about what's new in the Percy Jackson fandom, discuss all the books the Rick Riordan Presents authors have written outside of the Disney imprint, and analyze chapters 13 and 14 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:07) This might be the longest doc we've had so far. First and foremost, we have news from Rick's blog! There's no current plan for a Daughter of the Deep sequel, but never say never! The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel and Serwa Boateng's Guide of Vampire Hunting have official release dates and synopses. We have an official update on where in the process the Nico di Angelo book currently is. The book is at 117,000 words. How many pages is that? We're probably not getting anymore Percy Jackson television show news until 2022. That includes no news for Disney+ Day. BUT we know Becky and Rick have reviewed some casting callback tapes. Read Riordan has spotlights on Nelinha, Ester, and Gemini. The Last Fallen Star is officially in New Zealand! You can sing to the karaoke version of The Lightning Thief Musical! (Edit: Apparently this is from 2019, and we had no idea!) “Forget Horse Girls, Embrace the Mythology Freak” by Jenny G. Zhang (here's the tweet) Sorry, Frank. Why did we like mythology so much, and what do all the mythology freaks have in common? (Say hi to Callie!) Rick Riordan Presents authors' other series (00:18:47) We're really excited about all the books, novellas, anthologies, and short stories these authors have written. But fair warning: There are A LOT. Anthologies have really made a resurgence lately, and we're into it. Up first is Roshani Chokshi, who wrote the Pandava Quintet/Aru Shah books! She's got some other stories here about Hindu mythology that might be for older audiences. And one of her books definitely gives Six of Crows vibes, if you're into that! Next up is J.C. Cervantes! Look, sometimes words are hard. Karen just wants to keep Kristen on her toes. Yoon Ha Lee, who wrote Dragon Pearl, is a very prolific writer. There's a lot of sci-fi here, and some really cool concepts. Kristen gets her mind blown, repeatedly. Festus, is that you? Thank the gods for Wikipedia. Next on our happy hit parade is Carlos Hernandez, who wrote Sal & Gabi. Karen learned a fun fact about him, and she is very excited. Short stories can get W E I R D. Kwame Mbalia wrote the Tristan Strong series, as well as some other cool books. Black Boy Joy seems like a really important book to have right now. You might as well just assume almost everyone has written short stories. Tehlor Kay Mejia wrote the Paola Santiago series, and she's up next. She's got some great titles. If you liked Dumplin', then you might like Miss Meteor. Forests are so cool and creepy. Karen gets a book idea in the middle of recording. Graci Kim wrote the Gifted Clan series, and Karen has a quick aside about the last book in the series. She hasn't written any other books, but we have some fun facts to share about her! Who knew running away to the circus was so common? Rebecca Roanhorse wrote Race to the Sun, and a lot more!. You should watch Love and Monsters. And then go read Roar by Cora Carmack. We love a good title. And a good name. How do we feel about historical fiction? Here's LeVar Burton reading “Wherein Abigail…,” “Takeback Tango,” and “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™.” Sarwat Chadda wrote City of the Plague God, as well as some other interesting books! Have you seen A Little Princess? Shoutout to Animorphs! More short stories! More anthologies! Next up is Lori M. Lee, who wrote Pahua and the Soul Stealer. She's a busy lady, but she does plan to finish her Gates of Thread and Stone series. See? Forests are creepy! Yeah, you should definitely read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. Roseanne A. Brown wrote Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting, which we are very excited about. She also just finished up her duology in her A Song of Wraiths and Ruin series. They have some incredibly stunning covers. It's so cool that so many of these authors have written for Marvel and Star Wars, too. Daniel José Older wrote Ballad & Dagger, which definitely has some shared threads with one of his other series. If you're looking for an adult series, look no further than Bone Street Rumba! Daniel has written *all* kinds of books. Well-behaved spirits are super lame. Who else loves Waterworld?? Stacey Lee will be writing Winston Chu Versus the Whimsies, and Karen's definitely heard of her books before. Bridgerton might be a little spicy for our younger listeners. Historical fiction about non-white stories are always interesting reads. Everyone is running away to the circus! Karen brings the whole podcast down. Lastly, we've got Tracey Baptiste, who will be writing Moko Magic. Lots of jumbies here! Let's throw in some Minecraft, shall we? More jumbies! Plus, some non-fiction! We did it! We made it! We hope you found your next read. If you've read any of these, let us know which ones we should start with! Chapter Reviews (01:19:21) Let's talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 13 and 14. Grover sleeps a lot. Thank the gods for Annabeth. That chimera? No, thank you. Ohio reference! Karen breaks Kristen. It's always interesting when the female goddesses give birth to the demigods. Annabeth's childhood sounds rough, and it's so sad. But we can't wait to see her relationship with her father improve. Percy doesn't want to be enemies! What, exactly, is Poseidon's domain? Prophecy Count: 4 Percy can see through the Mist a lot better now. The dark is very scary. Percy really needed to take this moment to reflect on everything that's happening to him. Who was the woman in the water? How did that lady see through the Mist? But, seriously, how exactly does the Mist work? How has Percy never noticed he can breathe underwater? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 8, which will discuss some Daughter of the Deep spoilers. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Magic and fantastical elements can get kids reading. Young adult fantasy novels construct portals readers can get sucked into, and when they emerge, they often have more nuanced and keen insights for making or remaking the world around them. The parallels to contemporary society can even give kids another way to see themselves. In this episode, Megan Whalen Turner, author of the Queen's Thief series, Roseanne A. Brown, author of A Song of Wraith and Ruin, and Garth Nix, author of the Old Kingdom series, describe how the real world can be an inspiration for fantasy worlds, how a civilization's myths and religions offer depictions of the people, how to create compelling and dynamic characters who overcome even when great harm befalls them, and the many forms of magic in stories. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz talk about what's new in the Percy Jackson fandom, pitch each other their ideas for standalone novels set in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles universe (aside from Nico di Angelo, of course), and analyze chapters 10 and 11 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:16) Roseanne A. Brown's A Psalm of Storms and Silence is out now! Becky suggests you read Anne Ursu's Cronus Chronicles. Hoyeon Jung from Squid Game loves Percy Jackson. Make sure you read up on the Nautilus! And don't forget about the Cursed Carnival excerpt for “My Life as a Child Outlaw.” Standalone novel ideas (00:07:23) We're definitely getting a Nico di Angelo book, but what other characters do we want standalone novels for? Karen wrote an article about this earlier this year on Hypable. Did you guess which character people most want a book about, besides Nico? Karen's first suggestion is Mr. D—it's a strange one, but bear with her. Kristen likes the idea of his curse being lifted for 24 hours. Do we know how long he's been at camp so far? The end of Tower of Nero has a perfect jumping off point, too. Kristen's first choice if Frank because he's her favorite out of all the Camp Jupiter kids. He has such a rich family lineage, this could make for a really cool story. Everyone loves a good family heirloom. Should this be with or without Hazel? Next up, Karen makes her argument for a book based on Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Can she give herself a prophecy? Once again, Tower of Nero provides the perfect segue into a book. Kristen's rounding out her main picks with Leo Valdez. Everyone loves a good festival! You break it, you fix it. It's okay if Calypso isn't involved, but Karen really loves these two together. We say he's immature a lot, but we really do love him. Long live Festus! Karen's runner-up is none other than Thalia Grace (and maybe a little Reyna, too). There are a million ideas here for a Hunters of Artemis book. Kristen talked about her a little earlier, but her runner-up idea is for Hazel Levesque. This would also be a perfect follow-up to Nico's story. And maybe it could be a little bit spooky. Chapter Reviews (01:10:22) Kristen leads us through The Lightning Thief chapters 11 and 12. Thank goodness SOME of their stuff survived. It's nice Annabeth has some doubts. What exactly was going on with Percy? Should we recognize any of the statues? It was important to get the Percy-Medusa fight out of the way early. Is Medusa really a monster? Kristen has a question, but— It's answered at the beginning of the next chapter. The next chapter is super short, but it's jam-packed. Of course Grover is an environmentalist! There are some weird things going on… The Lightning Thief musical did things a little differently. We're officially halfway through the book! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 7, which will discuss the Rick Riordan Presents authors' other series. Marissa chats with Roseanne A. Brown about her new fantasy novel - A PSALM OF STORMS AND SILENCE - as well as weaving together two storylines with alternating points of view by ensuring that each subplot consistently informs the other; developing big stakes and powerful motivations for your protagonists that will continuously increase the book's suspense; using riddles (or spells, or clues, or prophecies...) as a clever plot device to build forward momentum into your plot; some tips for making a fantasy world that feels particularly lush and lived in; balancing multiple writing projects at a time by first developing a time management system that works for you and then finding ways to access a different headspace for each project; and choosing to take your writing seriously, no matter where you are on the journey.Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

In this podcast episode, we discuss the books: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman and A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown. Anxious People begins on New Year's Eve with 'House Tricks' estate agents are hosting an open viewing in an up-market apartment when an incompetent bank robber rushes in and politely takes everyone hostage. For Ana-Lena and Roger, busy buying up apartments to fill the hole in their marriage, it's something else to talk about. For Julia and Ro, panicky parents-to-be, it's yet another worry. Lonely bank manager Zara only came here for the view. While 87-year-old grandmother Estelle seems rather pleased by the company . . . As the police gather outside, the anxious strangers huddled within to try to make the best of a very sticky situation - but could it be that they have a whole lot more in common than meets the eye?+In A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, Malik, the Solstasia festival is a chance to escape his war-stricken home, but when a vengeful spirit abducts his younger sister, Nadia, as payment to enter the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal—kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia's freedom. But Karina has deadly aspirations of her own. Her mother, the Sultana, has been assassinated and grief-stricken, Karina decides to resurrect her mother through ancient magic . . . requiring the beating heart of a king. And she knows just how to obtain one: by offering her hand in marriage to the victor of the Solstasia competition. When Malik rigs his way into the contest, they are set on a heart-pounding course to destroy each other. As always, will either of these books make it onto the shelf? Jordan Cobb and A.J. Beckles guide listeners through this vibrant new YA fantasy inspired by West African folklore. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly discuss the complex fantasy centered around Crown Princess Karina and Malik, who comes to her desert city seeking refuge and is swept up in a deadly competition. Cobb’s strong voice captures the ferocity of Karina’s actions as she attempts to assert herself in a new position of power. Beckles highlights Malik’s anxiety and love for his family. Both Malik and Karina are desperate to be reunited with lost family members and will do whatever it takes — though they each struggle with growing attraction to one another, even as they attempt to destroy one another.
