Caroline has the misfortune of going on her 10th anniversary trip alone to England, after discovering her husband's affair. She goes mudlarking, and she soon discovers a centuries old apothecary vial. This vial is from a special apothecary owned by Nella who created tinctures and potions. When Eliza's boss comes to Nella's shop, Eliza finds herself with time and curiosity about this tiny apothecary on her hands. Orders for tinctures are beyond Nella's ability to meet them, so she takes on Eliza as an apprentice of sorts. Women watching out for each other and taking the time to notice what doesn't belong are a thread running through this story. By the time you find out how this vial ended up at the bottom of the river, you will care deeply for these women and the truth they each dredged up. What does Strom Thurmond have to do with your wine drinking experience? Listen to find out! Sarah talks with Olivia about her past career and the perk of traveling regularly to London, where she says, “she felt like I'd lived a previous life there. I felt so enchanted by the old brick alleyways... really enamored of it all. I knew I wanted to set my first book there and ended up setting THE LONDON SEANCE SOCIETY there as well.” Sarah talks about researching her Victorian-era novel, writing strong female characters like Lenna and Vaudeline, and her own adventure gaining perspective of a séance, digging deeper into what grieving people are seeking when they desire connection with those who have passed, and how those emotions can make us vulnerable. This week, Lisa discusses, The Lost Apothecary a debut novel by Sarah Penner.  This episode is spoiler free. This is Penner's debut novel.  The book is about an 18th Century Apothecary, Nella, who sells poisons to women seeking to kill men. She has two rules: The poison must never be used to harm another woman and the names of the murderer, and her victim must be recorded in the apothecary's register.  NPR describes it as a poisonously good read, but Publisher's Weekly says it starts out strong but peters out. One Goodreads reviewer Nilufer Ozmekik gave very positive reviews. Lisa questions some historical facts, pointing out that if a man dies a woman will likely be subordinate to another man. this article about Jane Austen that highlights some of the laws in the 1700s in London for women showing that women did not inherit the estate when a man died and was instead mostly forced to follow another man's rules.  *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links. SARAH PENNER is the author of The Lost Apothecary, which, on its release in the USA in 2021, immediately flew to the heady heights of the New York Times Top Ten Best Seller List. Published by Park Row Books/HarperCollins in the US and by Legend Press in the UK, the book is now in paperback and her readers are eagerly awaiting Sarah's second book due to be released in April 2023 entitled The London Séance Society. As Sarah and I walk and talk through the streets of London, Sarah reveals why London is the setting behind her book, her love of London, and particularly her curiosity in history, the past and the many untold stories that she feels are just waiting to be re-imagined into historical fiction. Sarah's fascination with women's roles in the past and present, potions and poisons, intrigue and empowerment are influential themes that drove Sarah to give up her 13 years in the American finance world and become a full-time writer. “I love to work… When I'm tired I rest. I take my mental health really seriously.”   “Maintaining a sense of belief in your own creative work...(is so important)...we're the most critical (of it)... Is this good enough? Will it ruin my name? Will my editor like it?" Calling all book nerds! Are you looking for a place where your book-loving heart can flourish? Join us at jenhatmakerbookclub.com, and become one of our sisters in nerdiness. For April 2022, Jen and the club read Sarah Penner's The Lost Apothecary. Sarah began writing seriously back in 2015 after attending a lecture by one of our favorite authors–Elizabeth Gilbert. Soon after that moment, Sarah enrolled in her first creative writing class, and y'all, how lucky are we that she did. Her book, The Lost Apothecary, was an instant success. It debuted at #7 on the New York Times bestseller list, and has been translated into over 40 languages. Based on a real-life mudlarking discovery (and yes, she explains what that is), Sarah takes us back in time to see how one woman created space for women everywhere to do what they needed to do. So, we are more than thrilled to bring this conversation to you all with the wonderful and talented Sarah Penner.    * * *   Thank you to our sponsors!   Stamps.com | Start your trial today using promo code FORTHELOVE at stamps.com.  Thought-Provoking Quotes   “I don't think Nella is a hero or a villain. I think she's somewhere in the middle. And that's how all of us are really, none of us are heroes. None of us are villains. We're all somewhere in the middle.” – Sarah Penner    “Sometimes we can meet someone and just form an instant friendship, sisterhood, connection, whatever you want to call it. And those can be the people that are most impactful in our lives. We don't need to only rely on these friends that we've had our whole lives. Sometimes the people that we need the most are just right there in the near vicinity.” – Sarah Penner    "Betrayal is part of the human experience. And one of the most enjoyable things about writing this book was I was able to compare and contrast how things were different with 200 years between them. And one of the main things that was the same is how we are all hurt by people that we love. And 200 years from now, nothing will have changed." – Sarah Penner   Sarah's LinksWebsite Instagram Twitter    Books & Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeI Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith Bloomsbury Girls - Natalie Jenner Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube

The Lost Apothecaryby Sarah Penner Published March 2nd 2021 by Park RowA female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them—setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course.Rule #1: The poison must never be used to harm another woman.Rule #2: The names of the murderer and her victim must be recorded in the apothecary's register. One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella awaits her newest customer. Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives. But when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella's world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register. In present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband's infidelity. When she finds an old apothecary vial near the river Thames, she can't resist investigating, only to realize she's found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London over two centuries ago. As she deepens her search, Caroline's life collides with Nella's and Eliza's in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive. For so many fiction readers, JoJo Moyes is a household name. The British novelist and screenwriter talked to Olivia and Margaret about the research that went into her latest novel, “The Giver of Stars.” The book is now in paperback, and to write it, the British novelist made numerous trips to America's heartland for research. She shares why it was important to ride horses in rural Kentucky (combining two of her passions), and some of the wild news headlines that helped her craft Alice, Marjery and the other Packhorse Librarians.  Moyes previews her next book that's headed to the screen, the trilogy that made her famous, and why readers today are making previous releases best-sellers again. Inspired by Moyes and the Pack Horse Librarians, Olivia and Margaret discuss other novels featuring librarians. For those into suspense, Margaret recommends “All the Devils are Here” by Louise Penny. A novel with a dark and mysterious network of women, there's “The Lost Apothecary” by Sarah Penner. Olivia and Margaret also mention popular books “The Time Traveler's Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger, and a children's classic: “Matilda” by Roald Dahl. For those who haven't read Sally Hepworth's “The Good Sister,” Olivia suggests now is the time, as one of the main characters is as a librarian! Sarah Penner's debut novel The Lost Apothecary shot to the top of the New York Times best seller lists in its first week, and overnight became one of the most anticipated books of 2021, with everyone from CNN to Oprah giving it favorable mentions. Her lead character, Nella, is a skilled healer who uses poison for dark purposes. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and in Binge Reading today Sarah talks about writing a book that stands out from all the others, how Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic got her started, and the challenges of making a female serial killer a sympathetic lead. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Sarah's "key" to writing a best seller while working fulltimeLooking for things not done beforeExploring ambiguity in fictionThe role Elizabeth Gilbert played in Sarah's creative lifeThe real life Roman poisonerWhere to find Sarah online Where to find Sarah Penner:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarah_penner_author/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SarahPennerAuthor/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sl_penner Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53288434-the-lost- apothecary Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/author/sarahpenner  YouTube:   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsKcEnxV6GS0C0XQL-te9xA What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. But now, here's Sarah.Jenny Wheeler: Hello there, Sarah and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Sarah Penner: Thank you so much, Jenny, for having me. I'm thrilled to be here talking with you today. Introducing author Sarah Penner Jenny Wheeler: The Lost Apothecary has had remarkable success as a debut novel, and it's surprising in one sense in that your protagonist is not necessarily a person people might automatically warm to, because she's a female serial killer. Did you feel you were taking a risk by choosing this sort of central character? Sarah Penner author Sarah Penner: You make a good point. When I began writing the story, I knew that I wanted Nella the apothecary to be somewhat morally gray. The book opens with her in her hidden apothecary shop and it's very dark and has a sinister feeling, and the reader quickly learns on page one that the apothecary is pulling together a poison. She's planning to poison someone for the purpose of killing them. I knew from the very early pages of the book that I was going to have to help the reader understand why she was doing this, and also show a softer side to the apothecary. What I aimed to do over the course of the novel is help the reader understand why the apothecary was so vengeful and the emotional wounds she had from her own betrayals in her life. But even more important than that, how she was setting out to help women who had also been betrayed and felt that they had no other resources available to them. Can revenge be 'pure and good?' So in a way, the motive behind her for killing is actually somewhat pure and good. I think you quickly see that when Eliza, her 12-year-old customer, arrives at the shop, and we learn why Eliza is purchasing poison from the apothecary. I hope, at that point, that the reader is able to see the perspective of another victim and how they're using this the shop of poisons as a last resort. It makes it feel less like murder and more like a way out of a bad situation. Jenny Wheeler: Yes, she's a serial killer with principle in the sense that she secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from men who have wronged or harmed or abused them. She draws the line at ever poisoning another woman. I wondered if you had any conflict about the idea of seeming to endorse revenge killings. Sarah Penner: Part of the intrigue about fiction, for both the author and the reader, is that we're able to suspend a few of our own principles. Of course, on the surface,

In this episode, Grace and Megan discuss the second half of The Lost Apothecary. It. Was. A. WHIRLWIND. Murder accusations, jumping off bridges, solved mysteries, and our favorite: gaslighting. This book has it all! Tune in as we discuss the effectiveness of three main characters, the benefits of moving back and forth in time, and what we (specifically *Megan*) didn't quite love. We also choose our next book club pick, Infinite Country by Patricia Engel. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT En este episodio, Ana y Rita discuten en detalle el libro 'The Lost Apothecary' de Sarah Penner. We give major spoilers on the plot, so proceed at your own risk! Teníamos muchas expectativas con este libro but it did not live up to those expectations. Enjoy!

The past and the present collide in Sarah Penner's historical fantasy(?) The Lost Apothecary. In the past Nella's killer apothecary is under more stress than ever, and in the present Caroline's marriage is falling apart but unravelling the apothecary murders could provide her with a new direction. I talk about the negative effect of bookstagram's influence on me, explain why this book was everything I wanted Outlawed to be, and complain about completely trivial things at the end of the podcast.
