Welcome to Season 5, Episode 13! Have you heard of Walter Tin Kit Achiu? He was the first Native Hawaiian and first Asian American to play in the National Football League. Although his career was groundbreaking, he's largely been forgotten over time. In this episode, we talk about his life, his football career, and what he did after he finished playing with the NFL's Dayton Triangles (yes… that was really the name of the American football team he was part of). Nicknamed “Sneeze”, he was a high level athlete all his life and broke barriers on the football field and in the wrestling ring. We begin the episode by talking about some current events (the sad passing of K.W. Lee and the happy green-lighting of the Crazy Rich Asians show on Max). And we end the episode with the recurring segment of What are We Listening To? This time, we talk about the new album Blood on the Silver Screen by singer Sasami as well as the audiobook Homicide and Halo-Halo written by Mia P. Manasala and voice acted by Danice Cabanela. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 38! The U.S. elections are coming up, so it's a fitting time to talk about the activist and suffragist Tye Leung Schulze. She broke barriers, but her life went far beyond being the first Chinese American woman to vote in a U.S. election. So in this episode, we go into more of the details of her incredible life and the the challenges she faced and overcame. To learn more about her as well as the lives of Chinese American women at that time, we highly recommend watching the Unladylike 2020 episode on her or the book Unbound Voices by Judy Yung. We open this episode by talking about some of the celebrations for people like Actress and Producer Sandra Oh and Paralympic champion Alice Tai. We close out the episode by talking about what we're listening to. Gen is listening to Sarah Kinsley's new album Escaper and Ted is listening to the audiobook Arsenic and Adobo by author Mia P. This post may contain links to purchase books.I have a recommendation episode for you within the Cozy Mystery genre today. If you are a fan of romance and love plot-driven novels, I suggest trying Cozy Mysteries. Cozy mysteries generally have a lighthearted tone and no graphic violence or explicit content. They often occur in small, socially intimate communities where everyone knows each other, and the sleuth is usually an amateur detective, not a professional law enforcement officer. In this episode, I share six cozy mysteries considered Millennial Cozies. These cozies are set in a bigger city but feel like a small town. All six cozy mysteries are great series starters that can serve as palate cleansers between heavier books.BOOKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Killer Content by Olivia Blacke- https://amzn.to/4bjlMXWMurder and Mamon by Mia P Manansala https://amzn.to/4dI60HMThe Diva Runs Out of Thyme by Krista Davis https://amzn.to/4dLsveTFresh Brewed Murder by Emmeline Duncan - https://amzn.to/3wQfhNcDeath by Dumpling by Vivien Chien https://amzn.to/3K503abKiller Chardonnay by Kate Lansing https://amzn.to/3QO9YVoLove Cozy Mysteries? After a year off with one cohost creating a production company, one cohost creating a baby, and one just....creating an interesting dating mess, Stephanie, Ollie, and Megg are back to talk their first book of 2023! We read What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall, where the question became: who is telling the truth? Enjoy us actually stay mostly on topic thanks to baby time, though we did have a segway as Ollie tries to convince Megg that to see if you are a murderer, you actually have to try murder. Join us at the end of every month, or maybe the beginning, as we discuss a new book! Next Book: Blackmail and Babinka by Mia P. Manansala
After searching tirelessly for months, I finally found a copy of Blackmail and Bibingka by Mia P Manansala. Shownotes up front—but scroll down, there’s an announcement!Mia P. Manansala (she/her) is a writer and book coach from Chicago who loves books, baking, and bad-ass women. She uses humor (and murder) to explore aspects of the Filipino diaspora, queerness, and her millennial love for pop culture. She is the author of 2 books so far in the Tita Rosie’s Kitchen Mystery series: Arsenic and Adobo and Homicide and Halo-Halo. I was excited to talk to Mia because I read my way through hundreds of cozies well into my early adulthood, and I thought I knew the genre pretty well—but in coming back to it recently, I could see that things have changed. Just like in romance, there’s far more of an effort to balance reality with the deeply unlikely yet also deeply satisfying elements of the genre that are the reasons we come: Protagonists we love, puzzles to solve and justice to serve and peace to restore—until the next book!Links from the PodChocolate Chip Cookie Murder, Joanne Fluke#AmReadingMia: Like a Sister, Kellye Garrett Secret Identity, Alex Segura The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Michael ChabonUnder Lock & Skeleton Key, Gigi PandianDial a for Aunties, Jesse Q. The Turncoat's Widow (Revolutionary War Mysteries #1)by Mally BeckerPublished February 16th 2021 by Level Best BooksSet during the darkest days of the American Revolution, The Turncoat's Widow tells the fictional story of General Washington's most reluctant spy, a young widow who races times and traitors in New York City and Morristown circa 1780 to uncover a plot that threatens the new nation's future. With elements of romance and suspense, this historical mystery also explores themes of resilience, loss, and the courage needed to leave the past behind. Arsenic and Adobo(Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery #1)by Mia P. Manansala Published May 4th 2021 by BerkleyThe first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishes—one that might just be killer....When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case. With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block…
Mia P. Manansala is a 2021 debut author of the acclaimed Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery series, Arsenic and Adobo and most recently, Homicide and Halo-Halo. She is the winner of the 2018 Hugh Holton Award, the 2018 Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award, and the 2016 Mystery Writers of America/Helen McCloy Scholarship. Lyn Liao Butler has lived several lives as a concert pianist, ballerina and now, as a yoga instructor, mother, wife and acclaimed 2021 debut author of The Tiger Mom's Tale and most recently, Red Thread of Fate. Mia and Lyn's discussion offers a frank look into the world of debut writers, where they learn to ward off impostor syndrome, practice self-care to improve their craft, plot new ways to embed their passion for traditional Asian food into their books…and mostly avoid writing steamy sex scenes in their novels.
To continue with the theme of Crime and Punishment for this month of March, The Halo Halo Podcast focuses on the newest novel from Mia P Manansala, Homicide and Halo Halo. Jezzie and Sigi recount this novel, the second in the series of cozy mysteries written by a Fil-Am author. This frothy whodunit is set in the sleepy town of Shady Palms, and is filled with Filipino culture and tantalizing descriptors of Filipino Food for a dash of a good measure. Influenced by the lead character Lila, your co-hosts later delve into a discussion on favoured Filipino narratives and the appeal of rooting for the underdog.

Narrator Danice Cabanela's energetic voice welcomes listeners back to Shady Palms in this second delicious installment of the Tita Rosie's Kitchen cozy mystery series. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the lively narration Danice brings to Mia P. Manansala's fun mystery. Lila's got a lot on her plate—opening a new cafe, judging her town's teen beauty pageant, two handsome men interested in her—she really doesn't need anything more to deal with. But! There's a suspicious death, and her family member is implicated, so she and her Aunties are on the case. Cabanela's dynamic narration captures the fun of the story. Homicide and Halo-Halo (Berkley, 2022) is the second cozy mystery in the Tita Rosie's Kitchen mystery series. Written in first person, baker Lila Macapagal is about to open the Brew-Ha Café in Shady Palms, a fictional town about 2 hours outside of Chicago. Lila, a proud Filipino American who bakes awesome fusions of Filipino and American pastry, is a 25-year-old who has been asked to guest judge a local beauty pageant that she won as a teenager. The first sign of trouble is a threat about the competition, and then one of Lila's fellow judges is found dead. Sarah interviews Mia P. Manansala about the first book in her cozy mystery series, Arsenic and Adobo. "When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block...." Hi! Thanks for your podcast. I love it! My request is about the country of Turkey. I have never been and don't know when I might get to travel there but I would love to learn about the culture of Turkey. I generally prefer fiction but I'm open to any genre. I have also been enjoying memoirs/biographies lately. Many thanks! -Sue 2. I just finished the Once and Future Witches and loved it. I'd be interested in reading more on the Salem witch trials from the feminist perspective...but I would want the non-fiction to feel a lot more like fiction. -Melissa 3. I'm not sure if what I'm looking for even exists, but I figured it was worth the ask! I unironically adored the X-Files short story collections edited by Jonathan Mayberry. There were three of them (Trust No One, The Truth is Out There, and Secret Agendas.) And I've listened to them over and over again. I'm looking for something, really anything, but preferably short story collections, that scratch that itch of weird, paranormal, urban folklore, and cryptids. (Bonus points if there's a mothman appearance.) I'm not stuck on traditional America folklore and cryptids, though I do love them, I also love the stories of Indigenous people and other countries and people. I'm not super interested in the government storylines. My favorite stories were: Snowman, Perithicia , Desperately Seeking Mothman, Non Gratum Anus Rodentum, and Loving The Alien. Please nothing with sexual assault. Thank you, -Annie 4. Hi Amanda and Jen! So I just finished The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune and omg it was exactly what I needed right now. Normally I am into fantasy/scifi/horror but with everything going on in the world I guess I just needed a literary hug which was The House in the Cerulean Sea did for me. Do you have any read alike recommendations of just some feel good happy books? Preferably not mainly romance but I would give it a shot if you felt strongly about it. Bonus points for diversity and found family themes. -Jennifer 5. I have read all of Louise Penny's mysteries, Agatha Christie mysteries and Sherlock Holmes stories.. I like mysteries that feature a competent detective who doesn't have a lot of angst. Hercule Poirot is a detective that I think fulfills that requirement. Recent authors that I have liked are Hans Olav Lahlum whose detective is working with a wheelchair bound woman who is brilliant and serves as his advisor, mysteries by John Farrow and Louise Luna. I have also read all of Tana French, Peter Lovesey, Deborah Crombie and Peter Robinson. -Ann 6. Hi Amanda and Jenn - First off, love love love your show! It really has expanded my reading shelves the past year and half, and I am forever thankful to you for introducing me to so many wonderful authors and stories. That being said, I'm in need of a recommendation. I read The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins last year, and it quickly became a favorite of mine. I finished the book with this feeling of "what did I just read!?", and to this day I still don't know how to articulate it to friends when I tell them they should read it. It's weird and wonderful and complex and I cannot get it out of my brain even after a year of reading it. When I really think about it, the use of God's/mythology intertwined in everyday life and the impacts on the unsuspecting citizens is what really piqued my interest. But I also loved how random the plot line seemed until all the little strings came together. I've read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and it semi-scratched the itch. It was good and I enjoyed it, but I was able to figure out the plot line before the book was finished. My go to genres are obviously fantasy/sci-fi and I love mythology of any kind mixed in. I have Gods of Jade and Shadow queued up in my Kindle to read next (thanks to your recommendations), but I'm really at a loss for what to read to fill the hole in my heart that this oddity of a book left. Any ideas? Thanks so much! Stay safe during all of this craziness! -Christina 7. Do you have any recommendations for own voices novels that take place in rainforests (preferably in South America)? I've been enjoying reading books set in the Amazon lately, but everything I find is written by white people from western countries and it feels kind of gross. Nonfiction and fiction are both great, I just really enjoy the setting. Thanks! P.S. - I know you skip reading praise on the air so I put this at the end but I want to tell you that I love your podcast. It's really expanded the types of books I read and I've found many I enjoy. -Laura Books Discussed My Name is Red by Orham Pamuk, transl. Erdag M Goknar Kedi, dir. Arsenic and Adobo: Book By Mia P. Manansala "This debut introduces readers to Filipino American food and culture, with its emphasis on family. There are cozy tropes (the close-knit community, the food business), but the emphasis on the Tagalog language, the culture, and drug dealing in a small town add gravity and individuality to this outstanding series kick-off."—Library Journal, starred review "[An] enjoyable and endearing debut cozy...Manansala peppers the narrative with enough red herrings to keep readers from guessing the killer, but the strength of the novel is how family, food and love intertwine in meaningful and complex ways. When Lila bakes her signature ube crinkle cookies, made with purple yams, we are in for a delectable treat."—New York Times Book Review "What an absolute treat! Mia P. Manansala has crafted a delicious mystery full of wit and wile that kept me laughing and guessing as I devoured every page. Fresh, fun, and feisty, amateur sleuth Lila Macapagal takes readers on a wild and savory ride as she sets out to catch a killer. I can't wait to read more in this fabulous new series!”—Jenn McKinlay, New York Times bestselling author of One for the Books website: https://gobookmart.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

This week's guest is Mia P. Manansala, author of ARSENIC AND ADOBO. In this brand-new cozy mystery novel, we follow Lila Macapagal as she returns to her hometown of Shady Palms after a stint in Chicago and the collapse of a relationship. She reunites with her childhood sweetheart, Derek, and starts working in her Tita Rosie's restaurant. Except Derek's a jerk, and a vengeful food critic to boot, and things immediately go awry when Derek drops dead at the restaurant. And Lila is immediately suspect number one. Reflecting on the nature of mystery novels and what makes a favorite book, Mia chose middle grade classic THE WESTING GAME by Ellen Raskin. Sixteen near-strangers, some neighbors and some unknowns, are summoned to the reading of a will. The deceased is Samuel Westing, an eccentric billionaire, who sees the will reading as his final game. All sixteen are challenged to get to the bottom of his untimely demise. With an immense fortune at stake and constant twists and turns, THE WESTING GAME involves children and adults working together to get to the bottom of a very strange riddle. Mia shares her insight on writing mystery as a person of color, what makes a satisfying middle grade novel, falling in love with a genre, and so much more. Mystery lovers, this episode is for you! And of course, no spoilers for either book. It's time to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Mia P. Manansala's debut novel Arsenic and Adobo. When Lila came home to help out in her aunt's Filipino restaurant she wasn't expecting her ex-boyfriend to die while eating their food or to become the number one suspect. I go on a really long tangent about how to pronounce the name Lila, express my new found love of cozy mystery novels, and talk about Lila's characterization.

Tonight we’re chatting with debut author Mia P. Manansala about her culinary cozy mystery, ARSENIC AND ADOBO, which launches May 4 with Berkley. Mia Manansala is the winner of the 2018 Hugh Holton Award, the 2018 Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award, the 2017 William F. Deeck - Malice Domestic Grant for Unpublished Writers, and the 2016 Mystery Writers of America/Helen McCloy Scholarship. She's also a 2017 Pitch Wars alum and 2018-2020 mentor. Drawing from her own Filipino heritage, Mia introduces readers to Lila Macapagal, a young woman who is stuck working in her Tita Rosie’s Filipino restaurant after enduring a streak of the worst clichés life has to offer. But Lila’s bad luck just continues when an ex-boyfriend who has been posting horrible reviews online about her tita’s cooking suddenly drops dead in the middle of the restaurant. After becoming the prime suspect in the case, Lila must take it upon herself to find the real killer—and hopefully save the future of her family’s restaurant as well.

Mia P. Manansala won multiple awards for her writing before her first novel sold. She wrote a book she was proud of, found an agent, but that book hasn't yet sold. She persevered, writing a different novel, teamed up with a new agent and happily, Arsenic and Adobo comes out this May.How did she stay motivated through this multi-year process? Community played a huge part. As a 2017 Pitch Wars alum and 2018-20 mentor, Mia hasn't had to go it alone along the way. In this episode, we discuss the role of food in her book (yum!), what keeps her motivated, and her passion for writing fiction that includes the experience of the Filipino diaspora culture. I am thrilled to introduce Mia as the final interview of Season 4: The Visible Writer.Visit today's blog post here: https://www.secretlibrarypodcast.com/episodes/mia-p-manansala-s4-ep7 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
