Do humans have souls, or are we just particles? Physicist Sabine Hossenfelder explains. Have you ever considered the possibility of transferring your consciousness into a computer? Sabine Hossenfelder, a German theoretical physicist, believes that this may one day be possible. According to Hossenfelder, the fundamental laws of physics as described in the standard model of particle physics can explain everything in the universe, including human consciousness. She suggests that we are simply a collection of elementary particles, but it is the arrangement of these particles that gives us our unique qualities and abilities. As such, it may be possible to capture and transfer all the information about the arrangement of particles in the body in order to transfer a person's consciousness into a computer. So, could we one day upload our consciousness and exist within a machine? It's an intriguing possibility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About Sabine Hossenfelder: Sabine Hossenfelder is a physicist, author, and creator of "Science Without the Gobbledygook". Is science close to explaining everything about our universe? Physicist Sabine Hossenfelder reacts. In his 1996 book "The End of Science", John Horgan argued that scientists were close to answering nearly all of the big questions about our Universe. Was he right? The theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder doesn't think so. As she points out, the Standard Model of physics, which describes the behavior of particles and their interactions, is still incomplete as it does not include gravity. What's more, the measurement problem in quantum mechanics remains unsolved, and understanding this could lead to significant technological advancements. Ultimately, Hossenfelder is optimistic that progress will be made in the next two decades, given the current technological advancements in quantum technologies and quantum computing. Why does time move forward but not backward? Physicist Sabine Hossenfelder explains. Why does time move in only one direction? This still-unsolved question was posed in 1927 by the British astrophysicist Arthur Eddington, and the concept came to be known as the arrow of time. As theoretical physicist @SabineHossenfelder explains, there's a longstanding mystery in the foundations of physics: If we look at the laws for microscopic constituents, like elementary particles, they work the same way forward in time as they do backward in time. But the same does not hold true on macroscopic scales. In this Big Think video, Hossenfelder dives into this mystery and explores how it has captivated the minds of so many scientists and science fiction writers. For today's episode of the Spiritual Spiral, I welcome back actress/writer Polly Humphreys as we continue our chat about the world of Hollywood. In part one, we discussed the brilliance of Succession and for part two, we talk about the brand new documentary, Smartless on the Road. I TOTALLY understand the mass appeal of the Smartless podcast when it came out almost three years ago. Jason, Will and Sean have fantastic charm and charisma. They're often witty and thanks to their massive rolodex, they've interviewed some of Hollywood's elite. So when I saw a new documentary came out about their show going on the road, of course I was initially intrigued. But about 15 minutes into the first episode, the show felt pointless, contrived and boring. Jason, Will and Sean bicker, lie on the couch and stare at their phones. They ride Bird scooters, fly on private jets, work out and eat overpriced room service at the Four Seasons. They talk about poop AND there's even a minor food fight. So of course I ask myself, who in the heck thought this was a good idea? Is this self-indulgent nonsense or is this considered entertainment? Polly definitely disagrees with my take which of course leads to a wonderful and at times heated chat about whether or not the Smartless documentary is or isn't quality entertainment. As always, thanks so much for listening to the show and being so supportive. I appreciate YOU! A new plain language bill now before parliament aims to do away with jargon laden documents and make official government documents more accessible and understandable. However, there is little detail on how plain language will be defined and how the law would be implemented. Opposition parties say the law will create more bureaucracy and establish language police. University of Waikato Linguistics lecturer, Dr Andreea Calude and law lecturer Sam Campbell talk to Lynn Freeman about what needs to happen for the bill to meet its aims.

What is time? Does the past still exist? How did the universe begin and how will it end? Do particles think? Was the universe made for us? Why doesn't anyone ever get younger? Has physics ruled out free will? Will we ever have a theory of everything? According to Sabine Hossenfelder, it is not a coincidence that quantum entanglement and vacuum energy have become the go-to explanations of alternative healers, or that people believe their deceased grandmother is still alive because of quantum mechanics. Science and religion have the same roots, and they still tackle some of the same questions: Where do we come from? Where do we go to? How much can we know? The area of science that is closest to answering these questions is physics. Over the last century, physicists have learned a lot about which spiritual ideas are still compatible with the laws of nature. Not always, though, have they stayed on the scientific side of the debate. Shermer and Hossenfelder also discuss: theories of everything • quantum flapdoodle • Is math all there is? Is math universal? • Uniformitarianism and the laws of nature • theories of aging • Emergent properties, or why we are not just a bag of atoms • Is knowledge predictable? • Free will and determinism from a physicist's perspective • Do copies of us exist? Could they ever? • Consciousness and computability • Does the universe think? • Why is there something rather than nothing? • What is the purpose of life, the universe, and everything? Sabine Hossenfelder is a research fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, Germany, and has published more than eighty research articles about the foundations of physics, including quantum gravity, physics beyond the standard model, dark matter, and quantum foundations. She has written about physics for a broad audience for 15 years and is the creator of the popular YouTube channel “Science without the Gobbledygook.” Her writing has been published in New Scientist, Scientific American, the New York Times, and the Guardian (London). Her first book, Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray, appeared in 2018.
This week's episode features renowned physicist Sabine Hossenfelder, Ph.D., author most recently of the book "Existential Physics" and creator of the popular YouTube channel, "Science Without the Gobbledygook." In this week's episode, we discuss a range of fascinating, mind-blowing topics such as: - “Does the past still exist?”, “Was the universe made for us?”, and why, in Dr. Hossenfelder's words, science is first an inspiration, not merely a profession. - What led Dr. Hossenfelder to start “Science without the Gobbledygook?”, her popular YouTube channel, which has 514,000 subscribers and counting - In discussing the many topics in the episodes on her channel - quantum physics, the expansion of the universe, and Einstein's theories of relativity, to name a few - what Dr. Hossenfelder means when she says she'll make her explanations as simple as possible, “but not any simpler” and whether she considers oversimplification a problem in communicating about science to general audiences - The approach and principles Dr. Hossenfelder uses as she goes about explaining these topics - in many ways translating them into terms and concepts that are more relatable to the public at large - Generally speaking, how effective Dr. Hossenfelder thinks government authorities have been in communicating to the public about major science-focused topics such as COVID, climate change, and more recently, monkeypox - As a physicist deeply exploring and explaining topics as abstract as “Does the Past Still Exist?” (one of her YouTube episodes watched on her channel more than 1.2 million times) how Dr. Hossenfelder thinks about her own future and her own definition of “free will” Resources Mentioned in the Episode Existential Physics, By Sabine Hossenfelder, Ph.D. Science Without The Gobbledygook YouTube Channel
In pursuit of the natural laws of the universe, human beings have accomplished remarkable things. We've outlined the principles of gravity and thermodynamics. We've built enormous machines to dig into the deepest parts of the Earth, to understand what happens at the shortest quantum distances, and equally large machines to take pictures of the most distant parts of the cosmos. Still, there remain a number of foundational gaps in our knowledge—gaps that have allowed some wild ideas to take root. Some scientists hypothesize that, with every decision we make, our universe forks into multiverses, that consciousness arises from the quantum movements of microtubules, that the universe itself is conscious, or that there is this cat in a box and not in a box at the same time. These ideas, and related big questions about the nature of the universe, are the subject of particle physicist Sabine Hossenfelder's new book, Existential Physics. In it, she argues that many of these far-out theories, put forward without evidence, are on par with religious belief. Physics, she contends, does not yet provide the answers to all of our questions—and it's doubtful that it ever will.Go beyond the episode:Sabine Hossenfelder's Existential Physics: A Scientist's Guide to Life's Biggest QuestionsAnd her previous book, Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics AstrayMore questions (and answers) on Hossenfelder's blog, Backreaction, and YouTube Channel, Science Without the Gobbledygook (or, you can try your hand at parsing her scholarly papers)The first images from the James Webb Space Telescope are indeed impressiveFor another physicist's perspective, listen to our interview with Stephon Alexander about his experience as a self-identified outsider in the fieldTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Could there be infinite versions of us, spinning off into their own universes from every choice we make? Is all of time happening all at once? Do we have free will? "When we try to answer such big questions about our existence, we basically have three options. That's religion, philosophy and physics," Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder told The Takeaway. "And of those three, I think physics has made the biggest progress in the past century." Sabine Hossenfelder, a physicist at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany, has made it her mission to make physics engaging to the public. She's the creator of the YouTube show, "Science without the Gobbledygook," and her newest book is "Existential Physics: A Scientist's Guide to Life's Biggest Questions." She plumbs the depths — and limitations — of the best knowledge physicists currently have about our universe, where it overlaps with some of our biggest spiritual and existential questions, and the possibilities they present.

From renowned physicist and creator of the YouTube series “Science without the Gobbledygook,” a book that takes a no-nonsense approach to life's biggest questions, and wrestles with what physics really says about the human condition Not only can we not currently explain the origin of the universe, it is questionable we will ever be able to explain it. The notion that there are universes within particles, or that particles are conscious, is as scientific, as is the hypothesis that our universe is a computer simulation. On the other hand, the idea that the universe itself is conscious is difficult to rule out entirely. According to Sabine Hossenfelder, it is not a coincidence that quantum entanglement and vacuum energy have become the go-to explanations of alternative healers, or that people believe their deceased grandmother is still alive because of quantum mechanics. Here's another replay of the live radio program. I did some bad math and didn't time things out to end at 6:00 so had to take the Doobie tune off the live playlist but tossed it back in when I edited the playback. Gobbledygook to you maybe, but I said I'd “definitely share a Doobie” and here it is. A very heavy duty Deep Purple tune from 1970 winds this one up but, oh man! Between Rockin' Elton and then, there's Dan Fogelberg, Boston and more. This is a great one for headphones! BTW, did you contact a dermatologist yet? Billy and Liz start from the very beginning, because as Julie Andrews teaches, it's a very good place to start. We're taking things aaaaall the way back to the Book of Genesis for our fifth season of the TLDR Bible Show. In Genesis 1:1-2:4a, we learn about a first creation story where God orders the formless void and fills the world with all manner of creatures. There are very few women, but that's okay, because that means that sexism and homophobia haven't entered the story at this point. Hooray! As always, all the love to Charlie Kluttz for writing our theme song and musical transitions. You make the show fun. Reach out to Charlie for all your music production needs. This episode is off the rails, with the train leaving for absolute nutter nonsense. All Aboard! Right out of the gate Mark and Dave get into a spat, that has Shawn and Roger flabbergasted. The guys talk about the latest celebrity feud between Elmo and Rocco, which leads them down a rabbit hole of a very different version of Sesame Street. From the familiar to the out there, Shawn and Mark pick their favorite and worst board games in High 5/Low 5. The fellas also discuss some words in the English language that sound pretty interesting. And by interesting we really mean weird and wacky. Plus the Maroon of the Week and a trip to Uncle Mark's Joke Bag. Rebrand Tuesday with some comedy! Subscribe and tell your friends about another funny episode of Randomosity with Shawn and Mark.
