Sermons from LifeJourney Church

Why did God call our church into existence? Aren't there already more than enough churches in the world? What is our unique vision and mission? This Sunday we'll wrap up our “Called Together” sermon series by exploring those questions – because the truth is: God has given us an AMAZING and COMPELLING mission! And we get to be part of it!

The Missing Chapter: History's Forgotten Stories

On June 13, 1926, 26-year-old Gladys Baker brought her 2-week-old daughter, to the foster home of Ida and Wayne Bolender in Hawthorne, California. There was no sign of any father—officially unknown - though Baker would insist for years that it was a Hollywood Studios employee named Charles Stanley Gifford. The sad drop-off of an infant and the sudden and abrupt departure of her single mother, certainly not the beginning to a life that would become as fame-filled and seemingly glamorous as any in American history.  Glamor… fame… luxury… sex appeal… all words that have come to embody the figure that today's Missing Chapter Podcast profiles. When, the word that best describes her life is more accurately… tragic. So, refresh that coffee and settle in for the true-story of a red-carpet icon. In the finale episode of our series on Marilyn Monroe, we take a look at her final years, her final movies, and what led up to her untimely death. Like most of her life, her final years weren't easy, and though she did get the chance to co-star with her childhood hero, Clark Gable, in her final completed movie, she was highly distraught when she learned that the press was falsely implying that she was somehow partly to blame for his death. Addiction to prescription pills and thoughts of taking her own life would increase over time, eventually landing her in a mental institution, then being placed in the care of new therapist whose experimental methods did nothing to aid in her depression. Join us for the conclusion episode on the life of Marilyn Monroe as we say goodbye to one of the most icon humans to ever live. (Ep. 045)

Lyricist Bernie Taupin is one half of one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of all time. For more than 50 years, he has written the lyrics for Elton John's songs including Tiny Dancer, Candle In The Wind, Rocket Man, Your Song and hundreds more. Having first met in 1967, after they both answered an advert in the NME placed by a record company seeking new musical talent, Elton John and Bernie Taupin have sold more than 300 million albums globally. Born in Lincolnshire, Bernie Taupin has lived in States since the mid 1970s and became an American citizen in 1990. With the publication of a memoir called Scattershot, he made a rare visit to the UK to look back at his life in lyrics. For This Cultural Life, Bernie Taupin discusses his childhood fascination with narrative poetry and storytelling. Hearing the songs of 1950s American country singer Marty Robbins, which told stories of cowboys and outlaws, was a life changing experience for Taupin. He recalls the impact of seeing the Sam Peckinpah western movie The Wild Bunch in 1969, a film renowned for its violent portrayal of 19th century cowboy life, and how it influenced the themes explored in the lyrics of the third Elton John album, Tumbleweed Connection, in 1970. Bernie Taupin also explores the impact of literature on his lyric writing and how flawed protagonists in novels by W. Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene in particular helped inspire the characters and stories in his own songs. He tells John Wilson about the duo's unusual songwriting process in which he sends Elton John completed lyrics, who then composes the songs around the words, a method that they have used throughout their long partnership. On 1st September 1997, as Britain was still reeling from Diana Princess of Wales' untimely death, Elton John's Candle in the Wind 1997 turned up on a shortlist of potential music to be performed at her funeral. The song, which had been reworked and rerecorded in just a few days, had originally been written about Marilyn Monroe. The original had been a moderate success, charting at Number 5 in the UK charts and 6 in the US. The 1997 update, meanwhile, which was released the day after the princess's funeral stormed straight to the top of the UK and US singles charts – and did the same in countless countries around the world. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask why people's feelings about the song soured so swiftly; discuss which other song was being considered for funeral; and explain which lyrics from the original were thought to be too spicy to be included in the 1997 version… Further Reading: ‘Slow Burn: How Elton John's "Candle in the Wind '97"—the Best-Selling Single in Music History—Became a Royal Relic' (Mental Floss, 2022): https://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/elton-john-candle-in-the-wind-97-princess-diana-tribute-song-history  ‘Princess Diana: Palace did not want Sir Elton John to sing at her funeral, newly released papers show' (Sky News, 2021): https://news.sky.com/story/princess-diana-palace-did-not-want-sir-elton-john-to-sing-at-her-funeral-newly-released-papers-show-12506086 ‘How Elton John's Candle in the Wind became the soundtrack of a nation's grief' (The Times, 2022) https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/princess-diana-funeral-music-25-year-anniversary-fkf7380ph  ‘Elton John - Candle in the Wind/Goodbye England's Rose (Live at Princess Diana's Funeral - 1997)' (BBC; 1997): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o9rLDCfO6o  #UK #1990s #Royals #Arts #Music We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

In Ep. 18a, Beethoven pt. 10 "The Candle in the Wind", first part of our massive grand finale(!) we start Beethoven on the last leg of his life. His compositional life would prove more cumbersome as well, as massive new works that took a considerable amount of time to complete were now at the forefront of his mind: the "Hammerklavier" Sonata, the Missa Solemnis, the Diabelli Variations, and of course the Ninth Symphony in D minor. ---------------- For all things GCP Please rate, review, and subscribe on iTunes!
