Singer/Songwriter Al Stewart came out of the London Folk scene, but by the mid-70's struck it big with MOR/AM Radio hit, "Year Of The Cat". But there's more to this Mr. Stewart than just this one hit. On this episode, I'm joined by fellow podcaster (and Al Stewart fan extraordinaire) Craig Smith to discuss the deep cut "Life In Dark Water". Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" (1976) - In this episode, we explore the story behind Al Stewart's hit song "Year of the Cat." Despite its title, the song has little to do with Vietnamese astrology. Instead, it's teeming with references to one of the great moments in cinema history: the film Casablanca. Join us as we delve into the creative process that went into crafting this timeless classic, from the songwriting to the recording techniques. We also uncover the fascinating anecdotes and inspirations that shaped this iconic pop rock hit. Don't miss out on this exclusive opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover the story behind "Year of the Cat."
Happy Lunar New Year! The Vietnamese celebrate the Cat versus the Rabbit. Learn about the difference and pick up a writing tip from the songwriter and musician Al Stewart from his hit song, The Year of the Cat.
Happy New Year (though this is posted a couple of weeks late)! It's the Year of the Cat for Vietnamese people, instead of the rabbit. We go into that with this episode of a new podcast, "Why an S and not a V?", which is going to look into Vietnamese culture, history and food from the perspective of a Vietnamese person born outside of Vietnam. The PCP / Your Internet Uncle podcast will run until the end of 2023, with Why an S running alongside it concurrently. The original PCP/YIU podcasts were meant to be memory placeholders for myself, so I was surprised to have a loyal listener from Frankfurt. Danke. Things should definitely improve and get more interesting as I delve and find out the weird bits and bobs from my people's culture and history. Unlike the North American perspective focused on the American portion of the IndoChina wars (yes, there were more than one), there's over4,000 years of recorded Vietnamese history and archaeological evidence that stretches back 1,000s of years farther back. We'll be looking at Vietnam's history of rebels (mostly tragic), wars (there were lots), folk lore (these will be new for me too), and food. So much food. At this time, I've compiled a list of over 500 uniquely Vietnamese foods, drinks and accoutrements. We'll try to get through them all. I hope you'll find this journey entertaining and enlightening!

Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Alan Parsons worked as assistant engineer on the last two albums by The Beatles and after he qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, he went on to work with Paul McCartney and The Hollies among many others. But it was his contribution as engineer on Pink Floyd's classic The Dark Side Of The Moon that really got him world attention. That soon led to striking successes as a producer – notably with Pilot's Magic, John Miles' Highfly and Music and Steve Harley's (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile. He also produced the hugely successful Year Of The Cat album with Al Stewart and two albums with American prog rock band Ambrosia. In 1975 he met Eric Woolfson who not only became his manager but joined forces with Alan as a songwriting and performing partner for what became known as The Alan Parsons Project and a string of hit albums. Parson's most recent studio release is entitled From the New World and features the classic sounds Parsons has become known for in his impressive career, with progressive, symphonic, and classic rock elements all touched upon on this stunning album. Guest appearances from the likes of renowned guitarist and singer Joe Bonamassa, Tommy Shaw of Styx, vocalist David Pack (Ambrosia), and vocalist James Durbin add wonderful atmosphere to the stunning performances by Alan and his incredible backing band. It’s a five-alarm all out listener takeover episode as Ben and Phil hand the whole show over to you for questions, guest charts and comments, alongside special appearances by our friends at Round The Archives and Tim Worthington off of the Guardian. Plus: how we met and our earliest collaborations, Phil's best punk, horrible ITV comedy, how to play "Year Of The Cat", the most appalling action figures, important crisp discussions, the best and worst sitcom movies are ranked, strange pet jokes, the highs and lows of Transformers, our best graphs, the top ten top tens, Eve Myles' lunchtime kink and we learn if Phil has ever lost a shoe. Davie Scott meets Al Stewart to unpick the making of The Year of the Cat.
Peter White is a perennial favorite at Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. His Christmas Show has become a tradition for many and whets the audience appetite for more Peter White music during the annual Berks Jazz Fest. Peter says the first music he ever played at the ripe old age of 7 was Christmas music on the piano. His Dad taught him how to play and introduced him to Christmas favorites. Growing up in England in the 60’s it was the Beatles that started him on his guitar journey. A journey that led him to Abbey Road Studio at the age of 20 to record ‘The Year Of The Cat’ with Rod Stewart. That was followed by a tour that brought him to America at age 21 performing with Rod Stewart at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Listening to another English Band, ‘Acoustic Alchemy’, he was inspired to continue writing his own music and pursue a solo career.
