Oleksandr Usyk verteidigte am Samstagabend seinen WBC-Schwergewichtstitel gegen den ehemaligen Kickbox-Champion Rico Verhoeven. Der Ukrainer stoppte Verhoeven in der 11. Runde durch technischen Knockout vor den Pyramiden von Gizeh in Ägypten.  Bis zum Abbruch durch Ringrichter Mark Lyson machte der 37-jährige Niederländer eine gute Figur in seinem zweiten Profiboxduell überhaupt und ließ den ungeschlagenen Routinier Usyk teils schlecht aussehen. Der 39-jährige Titelverteidiger hatte Probleme in den Kampf zu kommen, war zu statisch und setzte zu wenig Treffer. Verhoeven boxte unorthodox, lief stets agressiv nach vorne, brachte harte Hände ins Ziel und lag bei vielen Box-Experten nach Punkten vorne.  Der Abbruch in Runde 11 erfolgte eine Sekunde vor dem Ende der Runde und kam für viele Box-Fans zu früh. Mit seiner überzeugenden Leistung empfahl sich Verhoeven für einen Rückkampf. Gleichzeitig wartet auch Agit Kabayel weiterhin auf seine Chance auf einen WM-Kampf gegen Usyk. Is Rico Verhoeven about to do the unthinkable and upset world heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk? Well, no, of course he's not, but what Usyk ultimately looks like and how he wins are certainly worthwhile questions. So too is the status of the belts as, in different ways, each of the WBC, IBF and WBA somehow approve this as a championship contest. Better is the undercard where Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr meet in a solid heavyweight eliminator and Jack Catterall goes in tough against Shakram Glyasov.
