In 2019, federal prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York asked New Mexico authorities to stop their own sex trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein's sprawling Zorro Ranch, located south of Santa Fe, in an effort to avoid potential conflicts with the federal case and the risk of “inconsistent statements” from parallel investigations. At the time, then-New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas agreed to pause the state probe and share investigative materials — including police reports and witness interviews — with the federal team, with the understanding that federal prosecutors would provide information back that could support potential state charges. However, Balderas has since said he is unaware of any substantial information ever being shared back to New Mexico that could have led to prosecutions at the state level before Epstein's death in August 2019.The now-released correspondence shows that the federal request effectively “gutted” New Mexico's investigation, and Balderas has described the cooperation as essentially one-way. Records also reveal he urged federal authorities to seize the ranch and offered assistance to execute warrants, but received no response, and none of the material New Mexico sent appears among the files released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Surveillance video obtained by KMJ news partner ABC30 shows a man armed with a knife approaching Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz’s home around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, ringing the doorbell before moving into the backyard and banging on a back door. Fresno County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the man. Court documents show the suspect is ‘angry’ about failed restraining orders against Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, and a probation officer. Janz said he never had prior personal contact but his office defended the city in the Casto petition. “That is why we believe that he came to my house this weekend, in the middle of the night." The suspect has a long history with the court — 21 felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 1988. The charges include elder abuse, sexual assault, and several DUIs. Torrez served jail time for the tear gas possession, released from prison in 2024, according to court records. Records show he is also a registered sex offender, stemming from a 1995 case. A parole report said Torrez’s performance has been “unsatisfactory.” A judge set his bail at $30,000 and issued a protective order for Janz and his family. This Day in Legal History: Freedom RidersOn May 4, 1961, the first Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C., by bus for New Orleans, beginning a direct challenge to segregation in interstate travel. The riders were an interracial group organized by the Congress of Racial Equality, and they set out to test whether Southern states and private carriers would follow federal law. The Supreme Court had already made clear in cases such as Boynton v. Virginia that segregation in facilities connected to interstate bus travel was unconstitutional. But in much of the South, those rulings existed more on paper than in practice. Bus stations, waiting rooms, lunch counters, and restrooms remained divided by race, often with the cooperation or indifference of local officials.The Freedom Riders deliberately entered that space between legal doctrine and daily reality. By riding together, sitting together, and using facilities marked for white and Black passengers, they forced the country to confront the failure of enforcement. Their journey showed that a constitutional right means little when states, businesses, and police can ignore it without consequence. The riders were met with arrests, intimidation, and mob violence, making the legal stakes impossible for federal officials to avoid. Their campaign placed pressure on the Kennedy administration and the Interstate Commerce Commission to act more forcefully.Later in 1961, federal regulators issued rules requiring the desegregation of interstate bus and rail facilities and the removal of segregation signs. The Freedom Rides therefore became more than a protest against Jim Crow transportation rules. They became a test of whether federal constitutional law could overcome local resistance. May 4 stands as the date when a small group of riders exposed the difference between winning rights in court and making those rights real in public life.New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez won a major jury verdict against Meta in March, with jurors ordering the company to pay $375 million over claims that it concealed the harms Instagram and Facebook pose to minors and failed to protect young users from sexual exploitation, bullying, and harmful content. The next stage of the case is a bench trial before Judge Bryan Biedscheid, where the state will seek court-ordered changes to Meta's platforms and argue that the company's apps amount to a public nuisance. New Mexico is asking for a wide range of remedies, including safety warnings, stronger detection of child sexual abuse material, limits on teen usage, removal of infinite scroll, hidden like counts, restrictions on AI chatbot interactions with minors, and appointment of a child safety monitor. Meta argues that these requests are sweeping, technically unrealistic, and would effectively require a different version of Instagram to operate in New Mexico. The company also says some requested remedies, such as warning labels about teen mental health harms, would violate the First Amendment by compelling speech.Legal experts say the injunction phase may be even more significant than the damages award because it could reshape how digital platforms are designed and regulated. They also note that the case raises difficult questions about whether public nuisance law is an appropriate way to address alleged harms from social media platforms. The judge declined to delay the second phase, saying the evidence from the jury trial remains fresh and will help him evaluate the requested relief. The state argues the trial should be more streamlined than the first phase and says Meta cannot claim surprise over the public nuisance theory. Meta maintains that New Mexico is wrongly focusing on one platform while ignoring the many other apps teens use, and says the proposed mandates would interfere with parental rights and free expression.What To Watch For As Meta Stares Down NM Injunction Trial - Law360 UKThe Department of Defense announced new agreements with several major technology companies to bring their artificial intelligence tools into classified military network environments. The deals involve companies including Nvidia, Google, SpaceX, Reflection, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, and are meant to support lawful operational use of AI at high security levels. The Pentagon framed the move as part of a broader effort to make the U.S. military more AI-centered and to help service members make faster and better decisions across different areas of conflict.The announcement also emphasized that the department does not want to rely on only one AI company or model. Instead, it plans to offer access to a range of AI systems so it can preserve flexibility and avoid becoming dependent on a single vendor. Anthropic was not included in the new agreements, which is significant because the company is currently in litigation after the Pentagon labeled it a supply chain risk to national security. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez sued Meta in December 2023, alleging the company made false public statements about the safety of its platforms while knowing internally that its products facilitated child sexual exploitation. On March 24, a Santa Fe jury found Meta liable for willful violations of New Mexico's Unfair Practices Act, awarding $375 million in civil penalties. The next phase is a bench trial, starting May 4, to decide the state's public nuisance claim and determine remedies. Justin Hendrix spoke to Torrez about the types of reforms the state hopes to secure.

Criminal cases were falling through the cracks, prosecutors left the District Attorney's Office citing a hostile work environment, and crime victims were left in limbo. At the time, then-New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas agreed to pause the state probe and share investigative materials — including police reports and witness interviews — with the federal team, with the understanding that federal prosecutors would provide information back that could support potential state charges. However, Balderas has since said he is unaware of any substantial information ever being shared back to New Mexico that could have led to prosecutions at the state level before Epstein's death in August 2019.The now-released correspondence shows that the federal request effectively “gutted” New Mexico's investigation, and Balderas has described the cooperation as essentially one-way. Records also reveal he urged federal authorities to seize the ranch and offered assistance to execute warrants, but received no response, and none of the material New Mexico sent appears among the files released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Former Texas Ranger Juan Torrez took the stand Friday in the trial of ex-Uvalde CISD police officer Adrian Gonzales, showing jurors crime scene photographs from Room 111 at Robb Elementary School.Torrez, who was assigned to photograph the classroom where 19 children were killed on May 24, 2022, described finding pools of blood, drag marks, bloodstained desks and textbooks, and a tennis shoe covered in blood. The gunman's rifle was recovered from a closet with a "hellfire" trigger device attached.Investigators used trajectory rods to show the direction of gunfire. The evidence indicated the shooter fired downward through desks at students sheltering underneath. Judge Harle warned the courtroom the images would be "shocking and gruesome" before they were displayed.Gonzales faces 29 counts of child endangerment for allegedly failing to engage the shooter despite being first on scene and knowing his location. The first week of testimony in the Adrian Gonzales trial ended with prosecutors bringing the jury inside Room 111 — the classroom where the Uvalde massacre happened. Former Texas Ranger Juan Torrez testified about photographing the scene hours after the May 24, 2022 shooting that killed 19 children and 2 teachers at Robb Elementary School.Torrez described the room as "in disarray" with "a lot of shell casings, a lot of blood, a lot of blood swipes."
