Il y a quelques semaines, je devais enregistrer un épisode de French Expat avec Marie-Laure Ditte, une française qui vit sur Maui depuis plus de 15 ans et qui devait partager avec nous comment un tour du monde l'avait amenée à découvrir puis à adopter l'archipel d'Hawaï. Sauf qu'à quelques heures de notre interview, nous découvrions avec horreur les incendies qui ravageaient l'ouest de l'île de Maui et commencions à peine à prendre la mesure du drame.Mardi 8 août dernier, les vents provenants de Dora, un ouragan de force 4 passant au large de l'archipel d'Hawaii ont frappé sévèrement la petite ville historique et touristique de Lahaina. Ces vents ont entrainés des feux d'une violence inouïe qui ont littéralement rasé la ville en quelques heures, prenant au piège des centaines d'habitants.En échangeant quelques notes vocales sur WhatsApp, Marie-Laure m'a raconté l'effroi des habitants de l'île, la disparition de nombreuses personnes de son entourage mais aussi l'élan de solidarité incroyable qu'elle observait depuis ce jour tragique. La jeune femme m'a alors confié l'histoire de Florian Bayol, un autre français qui vit à Lahaina (la ville sinistrée) depuis 23 ans, et qui a pris la difficile décision de tout quitter pour mettre ses enfants en sécurité, rongé par la culpabilité de ne pas avoir pu sauver plus de personnes avant de quitter la ville en flammes. For Micah Kāne, Hawaii Community Foundation's president and CEO, it's all about being relevant, humble and helping the next generation of leaders. Sharpening fishing spear prongs, organizing nets and cleaning the family boat as a child taught Micah Kāne an important value that he strives to embody as a leader: being relevant. Kāne spent almost every weekend on that fishing boat – the only kid among six grown men. He saw how they handled bad weather, getting seasick and life-threatening situations. Kāne has held leadership positions at the Hawai‘i Republican Party, Pacific Links International, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and the Building Industry Association of Hawai‘i. He says he never imagined he'd be a leader but acknowledges the great responsibility that comes with the role: “Influence doesn't make you humble? You shouldn't have it...” he says.
