Welcome back to the Multifamily Collective! Today, I'm tuning in from (cloudy!) San Diego, where I'm speaking at the Future Conference. I'll discuss a topic we've championed for years: the critical need to upskill and re-skill the workforce. While en route, I listened to Gigatrends by Thomas Koulopoulos and Nathaniel Palmer, which shed light on seismic workforce shifts. Here are the stats: Over 14% of today's workforce must pivot to new jobs or industries as existing skills become obsolete. And with automation on track to impact 50% of jobs worldwide, 77% of CEOs feel their teams lack the skills to work effectively alongside AI. This challenge—and opportunity—extends to multifamily, where every role, from leasing consultants to property managers, needs an upgrade in digital literacy and an understanding of AI-powered tools. The skill of the future? Learning to prompt and collaborate with AI to drive data-backed decisions in everything from strategy to creativity. Leaders, 2025 is approaching, and the time to prepare is now. If you found this helpful, like it and subscribe for more insights. Let's build a digitally fluent workforce ready to lead multifamily into the future! https://www.multifamilycollective.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mike-brewer/support

Hello good people! In January this year a group of us hosted the first ever Future Church conference. It was a fantastic day — we had people travel from South Australia, Queensland, Victoria…converging in Redfern Town Hall for an exploration of what the church of tomorrow could look like at its most expansive, welcoming and imaginative. We delved into some heavy topics, but it was a really inspiring and wonderful space of connection and possibility. There will be another Future Church Conference — if you want to make sure you don't miss any announcements about that give New City Church a follow on the socials — or even feel free to send an email to spiritualmisfits@outlook.com and we will make sure you're in the loop when a date is announced. In the meantime, I'm going to be playing some of the talks from last time here on the podcast. They were all brilliant, in my opinion, and are well worth sharing around and using as the basis for ongoing conversations.  We were so grateful to be joined by Safina Stewart on the day. Safina is a proud Wuthathi and Mabuiag Island woman who grew up cross culturally in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Australia. She is an artist, the Relationships and Storytelling Coordinator at Common Grace, and a brilliant storyteller in her own right. Safina gave a talk at Future Conference called ‘The Future Church is Decolonising'. This was such a powerful and palpable talk to be in the room for. If you couldn't be in the room this recording is absolutely worth listening to! At certain points in the talk Safina used her body to illustrate the points she was making. For example, when she talks about looking back at the past to inform our future she turned away from the audience. Knowing this I'm sure you can imagine those moments as you listen. Dr. Augusto Lopez-Claros, Executive Director of the Global Governance Forum, highlights his recent book,, “Global Governance and the Emergence of Global Institutions for the 21st Century.” Global institutions, such as the United Nations, confront the world's major problems, such as climate change, Israeli-Hamas War, Russian invasion of Ukraine, attacks on democracies, and nuclear proliferation. The United Nations has been the epicenter of confronting on these problems.  Unfortunately, many national goals are not in conformance with international goals. Also, there is an unraveling of the nuclear arms treaties over the last 30-years. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the “Summit of the Future Conference” in September to deal with many of these problems. To be more successful, the UN must begin to reform the institution, especially the Security Council, as well as to discuss overhauling the UN Charter. The main challenges are to protect democracy in the UN and worldwide and have a more carbon-free lifestyle.

In 1946, Paul Sears took the stage at the “Food & the Future” Conference to deliver a new vision of agriculture from a global, ecological perspective. In this speech, on the heels of World War 2, he credited Darwin & Kropotkin for providing a biological framework for the ethics humanity needed in order to make sense of what seemed like an unravelling world. Sears told his audience that “Our responsibility now has two facets—we are custodians of ourselves and our environment as well. We did not make and cannot change the laws under which we must work, but at least we can understand them.” The early 1940s had proven to be a time of maturation for the permanent agriculture movement, as the science and ethic of ecology had emerged as the central component of permanent agriculture.    How did it lose its momentum going into World War 2, and how did that impact the rise of the movements we see today in regards to alternatives to conventional agriculture?     To read about this unique period in history, check out the following substack for sources and further details: https://poorprolesalmanac.substack.com/p/the-20th-century-permanent-agriculture   To support this podcast, join our patreon for early episode access at https://www.patreon.com/poorprolesalmanac For PPA Writing Content, visit: www.agroecologies.org For PPA Restoration Content, visit: www.restorationagroecology.com For PPA Merch, visit: www.poorproles.com For PPA Native Plants, visit: www.nativenurseries.org To hear Tomorrow, Today, our sister podcast, visit: www.tomorrowtodaypodcast.org/

And that is true power.”“Our dreams are not canceled because of our circumstances. And you have to just stop getting caught up in all the fear mongering and focus on what you do have.”“Had to surrender to what was going on in my life. And I found all kinds of new pieces of myself.”“When you get knocked down, sometimes that's just really a time for you to find more pieces of yourself that you didn't know existed. And then your comeback is going to be so much greater than the setback you experience.”“When you start realizing what you're capable of, and you start believing. And you start stepping into that and letting go, the more you let go of that imposter syndrome.”“We're so worried about the judgment of other people, that we're not thinking about the beauty of our dreams and how stepping into that dream could really change people.”“Confidence means owning every piece of who you truly are, and showing up authentically as yourself in every way.”“Doing the hard things builds confidence. And it isn't about, like, being the most beautiful person, it isn't about being the most attractive. It's about being the most you.” Connect with Linda:⭐ Connect on Facebook -https://www.facebook.com/people/Sisterhood-of-Sweat-Womens-Fitness-Boutique/100063521952742/⭐ Connect on Instagram @SisterhoodofSweat⭐ Connect on Twitter https://twitter.com/sisterhoodsweat Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐  JOIN the 12 week #CrushyourGoals challenge group today by clicking this link.  Use code goals50⭐ LEARN MORE about THINKIFIC COMMUNITIES here

This week Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods discuss a report by Jon Wilner that shows how the conference revenue fell significantly in 2021 thanks to the shortened COVID-19 football schedule in 2020 that saw most teams only play a handful of games. Wilner points out that the shortfall over the next four years will be significant, dropping the Pac-12 below the ACC into last place and leaving EACH Pac-12 program earning more than $100 million less than schools from the SEC and Big 10 over that span. They also take another look at the conference's decision to remove division winners from the Pac-12 Championship game and they debate what scheduling changes can be made for the future including a pods system that would group the Pacific Northwest, California and Mountain/Desert schools together and a "flex" schedule that could leave a couple of weeks open at the end of the season for games arranged on the fly. Dave even throws out a World Cup model where the conference holds group play for three weeks and then have programs advance from there into a mini tournament. 247Sports came out with new NCAA Transfer Portal rankings and Ryan and Dave see where the Pac-12 teams are ranked and which top-100 players the conference picked up. As always Dave and Ryan spend the last part of the show answering your voicemails, texts and emails with questions about Pac-12 football plus lots of other topics. At the University of South Carolina Columbia he earned an MS in geology, and then a  Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Dan has written in scientific journals, authored scientific papers, been a coastal geologist and a scientific researcher. He was the lead coordinator for a water conservation project in Hawai'i and has been a curriculum resource teacher with an emphasis on technology integration. (Catch this article in the Punahou Bulletin to know more about ways Dan thinks “beyond the classroom.”) A number of my colleagues have mentioned Dan's seminal presentation on student stress at the 2019 Schools of the Future Conference. Most of all, what you get from reviewing Dan's body of work so far is that he cares deeply about kids and learning. There is no doubt that he has a growth mindset and is continually developing his teaching practice. In this interview Dan and I talked about inch deep and a mile wide, vs. posthole learning. We talked about student travel and his own trip to Samoa as part of the Malama Honua voyages. We went deep into capstone projects, design thinking, competency-based learning and what it takes to build communities of practice. It was a marvelous conversation. Luke Ritchie is the Head of School at the Annesley Junior School – tagline: Heritage, Values, Innovation – in Adelaide, Australia (population 1.4 million). Annesley was a school on the brink of collapse not long ago. In this On the Road episode Luke and I talk about how he and his staff, his faculty, his parents and his students transformed Annesley into one of the fastest growing schools in the region. The backdrop of our conversation is the 2019 Leading Schools of the Future pre-workshop for the 2019 Schools of the Future Conference. Luke came to Hawaiʻi to participate as a “leader-mentor” at this pre-conference workshop (attended by 140 public, private and charter leaders) focused on deeper learning and assessments. Listen as Luke outlines the steps he and his community took to redesign and rebuild Annesley into a school focused on student-centered learning, faculty leading as professionals and diverse learning environments. Along the way, hear about the “Crunchy Cafe,” nature hikes with mathematicians and other wonders of student focused school culture. At some point a Myna Bird screams at us. We recorded this episode outside at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center! After Luke and I finished recording, I told him I wanted to attend elementary school again at Annesley.  The post 6. On this episode, Jennifer and Natalie, catch up with conference attendees Melanie Audette with the Mission Investors Exchange, Brenda Hunt with the Battle Creek Community Foundation, Amy Peterson of Rebel Nell, David Contorer with Hebrew Free Loans, and Jason Paulateer with PNC Bank and Foundation. To kick of Part Two, Jennifer sits down with Melanie Audette of the Mission Investors Exchange….. Jennifer: What I'd like to start off today, during our talk is to have you tell me a little bit about yourself and your organization and then we'll go from there. Melanie: Well, I'm the Senior Vice President at Mission Investor's Exchange. I am based in Seattle and Mission Investor's Exchange is a 12 year old organization with offices in New York and San Francisco and then we have some staff in Seattle, but we're a very small but mighty team that has a membership consisting of mainly foundations of all types and sizes across the US who are either building or expanding an impact investing program. And we started out as the PRI Makers Network 12 years ago, when foundations were really focused mainly on doing program-related investments, and about five years ago we merged with The More Formation Campaign, which was a campaign to encourage foundations to devote two percent of their endowments to invest for a mission. Jennifer: I love that. So here at the conference so far, what are your impressions then of how it works and how it applies to your mission through Mission Investor's Exchange? Melanie: Well the independent sector conference as well as the Council of Michigan Foundation's Conference, where we are today, represents two things for me specifically. First, the independent sector has a very much more broad attendance and participation than a lot of the conferences that we attend and that includes the foundations who are at the heart of our network, but also those who play a very important role in the ecosystem around impact investing. And that includes non-profit organizations who oftentimes have social entrepreneurial goals and projects and so, therefore can be investees of impact investment's five foundations as well as those who support them in the field, so investment advisors, philanthropic advisors, attorneys, and accountants. All of those participants really play an incredibly important part helping foundations to identify who investees can be and to be able to do the work efficiently and within the law and correctly and responsibly. The second part is the Council of Michigan Foundations, Mission Investor's Exchange has had a five-year partnership with CMF, and we've worked together over the years to provide education first for those foundations who are interested in learning about impact investing. Through this partnership, Michigan has become the model, really for the whole country informing what's now an infrastructure within that association to help foundations not only to learn about impact investing, but to actually build and identify investment opportunities, create a pipeline for investments, support them in that work and now this year, they've hired an Executive in Residence at CMF to help on a local and regional level, their membership to do this. Jennifer: So understanding that you're drawing from a large group with a lot of people...

This is Romy, and we have something very special for you on this episode. Our Bonfires team was invited to podcast from the Our Common Futures conference which was held in Detroit at the end of October 2017. I was not able to attend but two of our very experienced colleagues, Jennifer Davis-Papa and Natalie Hazen, caught up with some very high profile attendees and speakers at the conference. They came back with so many great discussions that we had to do a Part 1 and a Part 2 to give you the top ten. So, on Part 1, you will hear interviews with Dan Cardinali, President, and CEO of Independent Sector, Joyce Cade-Hitchye from the organization, Of Impact, Angela Barbash from the financial firm, Revalue Aaron Seybert of Kresge, and Angela Rogensues of the non-profit, Playworks. Let's get started with Dan Cardinelli of Independent Sector. He begins by answering Natalie with some organization history. Dan Cardinali: Well, first of all, Independent Sector is a 38-year-old organization that is founded with two very simple principles; that our goal is to bring the sector, the whole sector together. Grant seeking, foundations, corporate foundations, and ... Excuse me. Can I start that again? Natalie: Mm-hmm. Dan Cardinali: Independent Sector was founded 38 years ago with two very simple purposes; to bring the sector together, sector spanning, so we have grant seeking organizations, nonprofits, and grant-making organizations like philanthropy and corporate foundations. The goal of this gathering is for the community to come together in a non-transactional way. Not to cut deals, but to collectively take stock in what's going well and what's not, and how we as a sector can come together, catalyze activity, and be part of accelerating social change. That's what Independent Sector does. And then we learn from that conversation, and we translate that into our public policy work. Primarily in Washington, but increasingly we partner with state organizations to make sure we're aligned with the policies that are really going to strengthen the sector. Every year we gather, historically every year we gather the sector together in this vital meeting ground, this conference. We realize collaboration is the way of the future. Early on as were designing for this, we said, "Look, who are the strongest sector spanning organizations we can partner with." The Council of Michigan Foundations is one of the strongest state level, regional association working in philanthropy. The Michigan Nonprofit Association is a similar; it's one of the strongest nonprofit association. It made perfect sense to say, "Hey! Let's put our heads together, and let's design together." And that's what we did. It's been a phenomenal experience. Natalie: Wow. That's fantastic. I like how you're getting everybody together in the sandbox to play well together, in essence. Dan Cardinali: Right. Well, the goal I think is playing well together. I think also means struggling to do what we hope happens here. Which is to push each other. Each of us have a different purview. We look across the whole sector nationally. The Council of Michigan Foundations has their lens working with philanthropy here in Michigan. Although, they are also a national player. They've a really great purview, and similarly, the Michigan Nonprofit Association has their purview really on what's going on here...

It's never too early or late to think about turkeys. In this episode, Mike starts off talking to Spence about current farm events, which steers the conversation to turkey breeding. Mike has been setting up his Beltsvile Small White breeding program. And no discussion about turkeys is complete without a chat about blackhead. Spence authored a great paper with NCAT on blackhead. About mid-way through, Spence ducks out and Mike finishes the episodes by sharing a couple of slides from his Year Round Turkey Production presentation at the 2016 PASA Farming for the Future Conference where he talks about grinding and cutting up turkey for the year round markets.
