Since watching The Deepest Breath, Terence, like many others, became obsessed with freediving. And while his attempts at holding his breath left him gasping for air after just a few short seconds, the fascination has never gone away. For Claire Walsh, the fascination started before the documentary back in 2015 while on a trip across the world. She has since become the first person to represent Ireland at the Freediving World Championships in 2019.After struggling with mental illness, freediving helped to teach her to clear her mind and focus on her breath. It also taught her a lot about fear, and bravery, something she explores more in her podcast Scared Shitless.Claire told us about her journey to the World Championships, and life since then, including accepting where she is now and the impacts of long covid.

The Deepest Breath tells the story of the bond between a promising young Italian free-diver, Alessia Zecchini, and her Irish safety diver, Stephen Keenan. Last week the freediving documentary, directed by Laura McGann, won the outstanding long documentary at the Emmy Sports ceremony in New York City.
We plunge into the fascinating world of freediving with world-renowned diver Will Trubridge and explore the extreme sport that takes athletes to unimaginable depths with a single breath. Will shares his incredible journey, shedding light on the mental and physical challenges of holding his breath for more than 4 minutes underwater (He says he can hold it for more than 8 minutes if he stays stationary.) He discussed the techniques he uses to "turn off his brain" and achieve a state of focus during his dives. We also delve into his experience being featured in the recent Netflix documentary "The Deepest Breath," which highlights the intense and often perilous world of competitive freediving. Will also reveals some of his methods and training secrets, offering insights into how even Mosheh could potentially hold his breath for several minutes underwater. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in pushing the boundaries of human potential and understanding the depths of the human mind. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Nainita Desai is an award-winning composer whose work has spanned creative formats, from documentaries like The Reason I Jump where she won an Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition, to TV series like Funny Women, to video games like Telling Lies and Immortality. With over 150 credits to her name, Nainita is nothing short of prolific. In the following interview, Nainita talks about her journey into becoming a composer and how Peter Gabriel impacted her career. While we don't touch on her education in mathematics, it plays a vital role in her career as a composer, guiding her interest in sound design as well as composition. From here, our discussion leads into talking about the role of nature in her work, as heard in films like The Deepest Breath, and the 2024 Sundance award-winning film Nocturnes. In both of these films, the role of the ocean and the mountains is as important as the world of the people we are following, and Nainita talks about the way that she reflects those characters journeys in her compositions.Equally important is the role that silence plays in her work. Nainita talks about the role that silence plays as the unspoken instrument for a composer, and how important it is to relinquish the score to amplify the drama of a scene. As a flow on of this discussion point, Nainita talks about the difficulty of knowing that not all aspects of her score will end up in the final film. This wonderfully insightful conversation flows between creativity and personal journeys, with Nainita giving us an in depth look at the mind of a composer. This conversation was recorded ahead of Nainita's upcoming appearance at the Australian International Documentary Conference, which opens in Melbourne on 3 March 2024. Nainita will be presenting a discussion called The Art of Composing for Documentary with Nainita Desai, alongside moderator Emma Bortignon. As we close out this interview, I asked Nainita about the importance of being accessible for interviews and panel discussions, which leads Nainita to reflect on the role of being a mentor for emerging composers, particularly women composers. Earlier this Summer, a Netflix documentary, all about the hidden world of freediving, catapulted the sport in front of a global audience. The Deepest Breath, tells the story of Alessia Zecchini, a champion freediver from Italy and Stephen Keenan, an expert safety diver from Glasnevin in Dublin. It follows them as they rise separately through the ranks of the sport, before their lives eventually become intertwined. The film was directed by Irish filmmaker Laura McGann and gives an incredible insight into the world of freediving: which sees divers reach depths of more than 100 meters, without any equipment and with one single breath. In this episode, McGann explains how extraordinary archive footage and the generosity of Stephen's father Peter helped shape the documentary. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. This episode was originally published in September 2023. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

How long can you hold your breath? “90% of the blackouts happen near the surface at the very end of the dive.” In short, we talk about this in the episode: How dangerous is freediving really? Step by step, what happens during a vertical freedive? What surprising reflexes help humans survive longer underwater? Who was Stephen Keenan to Lily and what happened on July 22nd, 2017? In more words: Imagine walking 120 meters (131 yards) on one breath. Think you can make it? And now imagine doing the same thing… diving. Miscalculated, ran out of oxygen? Tough luck, no way to breathe before you reach the surface! What sounds like a crazy, dangerous endeavour is Lily Crespy's passion and the most peaceful activity she can imagine. Freediving. Upon discovering this niche sport, not even a broken leg could stop Lily from diving into a new life. Formerly a molecular biologist, Lily became an athlete, competing in the world championships, and working internationally as a freediving instructor. In 2017, a tragic accident (“The Deepest Breath” movie, available on Netflix) involving Lily's friends - world-renowned safety diver Stephen Keenan and record-breaking freediving champion Alessia Zecchini – changed the trajectory of Lily's career. Let Lily take you on a deep dive and explain the intriguing physiological reflexes that help humans survive longer underwater. Listen to her personal account of Stephen Keenan's fatal accident. And learn what she is up to now, writing a new chapter back home in Nice, France. Ukraine has seen an exodus of foreign journalists in the wake of the terrible conflict in the Middle East. But coverage of the war on this continent remains more crucial than ever. This week we talk to the writer Sasha Dovzhyk about what is happening in Ukraine right now, as well as Ukrainians' complicated feelings around the struggle for international attention. We're also talking about the corruption scandal rocking Portugal's government, and Greta Thunberg's fraught appearance at Amsterdam's huge climate protest. In this week's episode of Documentary First, we dive into the heartwarming tale of "Puppy Love," a documentary chronicling the incredible journey of four paralyzed puppies on the road to recovery. What began as Gail's casual filming of her new puppy's antics took an unexpected turn when the pup faced paralysis. This documentary captures the tireless efforts to help the puppies heal, with a diverse team of camera operators capturing every moment. Gail's meticulous editing, guided by screenwriting principles, resulted in a 76-minute emotional rollercoaster that has left audiences laughing and in tears. This project was a labor of love, with volunteers pouring their time and resources into rescuing dogs in need. Remarkably, the production costs stayed under $15,000, thanks to the dedication of everyone involved. The film sheds light on the vital role of raw food company Darwin's, whose sponsorship was born out of a positive impact on one of the featured dogs. Their collaboration is a testament to the potential positive change that can come from these stories. Gail shares valuable lessons for aspiring filmmakers, stressing the importance of dedication, consistency, and never deleting footage or audio. She also highlights the significance of media training and the stark contrast it made in her PR efforts. With recent release on streaming platforms, Gail looks forward to future screenings, including a dream showing at the Museum of the Dog in NYC. She and Christian discuss the distribution process, expressing gratitude for the support from Documentary First and underlining the crucial role of a strong distributor relationship in successful film promotion. In the end, "Puppy Love" stands as a powerful testament to the lengths individuals will go to save an animal, showcasing the enduring power of perseverance, sacrifice, and the bond between humans and animals. Gail's insights into production challenges, collaborative efforts, and future plans for the film offer a captivating glimpse into the world behind this heartwarming documentary. In "Puppy Love" the dogs are put on a raw diet to help with their recovery. It was so successful that they continue eating raw today. Some dogs eat home made raw food and others eat food from Darwin's Natural Pet Products. https://www.darwinspet.com DocuView Déjà Vu: Gail: The Pigeon Tunnel, 2023, 92 mins, Watch on Apple TV+, IMDB Link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28486633/?ref_=ext_shr The Deepest Breath, 2023, 108 mins, Watch on Netflix, IMDB Link; https://www.imdb.com/title/tt24132732/?ref_=ext_shr Timecodes: Filmmaking journey and first feature film. 0:00 Documentary filmmaking and puppy paralysis. 1:46 Filmmaking and storytelling techniques. 7:45 A heartwarming dog rescue story. 12:29 Film distribution and festival run. 17:03 Tips and challenges. 21:31 Sponsorship, budget, and dog health in a documentary. 27:02 Filmmaking costs and distribution. 31:13 Filmmaking and editing & DocuView Déjà Vu. 36:17 Media training. 40:09

Having watched The Deepest Breath on Netflix, I realised how much we can differ when it comes to finding the thing that helps to downregulate our stress response. For many people, the idea of plunging down into the darkest depths of the sea, in one single breath, without all the breathing paraphernalia would be enough to send them into a state of panic. It is certainly not for everyone and it requires major training and experience and it's high risk but for those who describe themselves as free divers, this activity can be how they manage their stress and anxiety. Here, Irish free diver Claire tells her story and what she's learned from holding her breath in the water which she can apply to her life on dry land. PS: I've recently launched a substack where I'm sharing a weekly column. Anxiety will be a regular theme but there'll also be discussions about parenting and work and relationships, such as how I've managed to build a reliable revenue stream from podcasting. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Susie talks about her latest obsession, the Telemarketers docuseries on Max. She reveals how a huge telemarketing company changed the industry forever, why we're all at risked of being scammed, and why this documentary is even crazier than you can imagine. Sarah has been watching a bunch of documentaries too, and she explains how they all tie together. We learn why CPR is kind of a scam, and it's an open secret in the medical field that it's usually a performance for the families rather than an effective treatment or life-saving technique. We learn about a tribe in Brazil that is at the center of a debate over land and Susie shares some bizarre ways the "uncontacted" tribe has been introduced to the modern world. We learn the science behind athletic achievements and the real reason it seems like athletes keep getting better. Plus, we lose our minds talking about The Deepest Breath documentary on Netflix, and they say it's not a doc about free diving it's really a doc about addiction.Join our book club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get an extended 30 day free trial when you go to https://www.dipseastories.com/braincandyHead to https://www.smalls.com/braincandy and use promo code BRAINCANDY at checkout for 50% off your first order PLUS free shipping!Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get $5 off off your Starter Pack (that's over 40% off) with promo code BRAINCANDY5 at https://lumedeodorant.com/offer/braincandy5! #lumepodSign up for pet insurance today and make sure you go to https://embracepetinsurance.com/braincandy or else they won't know I sent you!More podcasts at WAVE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/artist/wave-podcast-network/1437831426See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Should fans be arrested for heckling golfers with a bet on the outcome. We have a solution, and it doesn't involve a RIM. We speculate about Jonathan Taylor to the Cowboys and why it would help Dak more than a defensive player. And then Bob goes really dark to pick a bone about The Deepest Breath.

In this Film Ireland podcast Gemma Creagh talks to Laura McGann about her film The Deepest Breath. The Deepest Breath follows champion freediver Alessia Zecchini, who fell in love with the sport as a child growing up in Italy, astounding coaches with her raw talent and determination in pool swims and open water contests before she was even old enough to legally compete. Irish adventurer turned expert safety diver Stephen Keenan, meanwhile, was raised near the sea, but as a young man he set out on a quest to find himself, traveling across Africa before landing in Dahab, Egypt and establishing a dive school. Despite their very different paths, the two would meet at the pinnacle of the competitive freediving world, discovering a shared passion for pushing their limits and forming a powerful relationship that felt like fate. From Irish director Laura McGann, this thrilling documentary takes a look inside one of the most dangerous sports in the world, using everything from raw underwater dive footage to childhood home movies to chronicle Zecchini and Keenan's lives and careers. The bond between them propels the film's emotional journey into the stunning, silent depths of the ocean, a breathtaking place unseen by all but the fortunate few – where exhilarating accomplishments and unavoidable risks await. The Deepest Breath is in cinemas from 14th July 2023 and is available to stream on Netflix now.

Friday Aug 11th, 2023 Today, we cleared up some confusion around PK's mood, and Uncle Jerry lightened the atmosphere with "Funny Friday." We mulled over popular restaurants that just don't hit the mark for some, and debated if PK should still be a licensed drone pilot.Stephen from Salem, OR, popped in for a lively round of "Match Two." We questioned the appropriateness of adults offering arcade cheat codes to kids and wondered aloud about the diverse inventory of ice cream trucks. Professor Elia showcased his linguistic prowess, and we candidly recounted our post-show disagreement that led to PK braving intense heat. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary “The Deepest Breath" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Laura McGann. Freedivers compete by swimming straight down to the deepests depths and back to the surface, all on a single gulp of air. Alessia Zecchini pushed herself to go down farther than any woman before. But she can't do it without safety divers like Stephen Keenan, great divers in their own right tasked with rescuing competitors who blackout before surfacing. “The Deepest Breath” follows the pair's growing bond on land and sea. But their quest for world records and championships will place them both in mortal danger. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “The Deepest Breath" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.

The new documentary “The Deepest Breath” tells how Stephen Keenan died six years ago while trying to rescue fellow freediver Alessia Zecchini. Special Counsel Jack Smith today indicted Donald Trump for alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his role leading up to the Capitol insurrection. Congressional Republicans are threatening to torpedo the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). It's one of President George W. Bush's greatest achievements. The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team is now in the final 16 of this year's World Cup. But the usually dominant squad is looking shakier than most people expected. Concertgoers have been increasingly throwing objects at performers while they're on stage. Why? Blame “main character syndrome.”

Zhodnotíme dokument o magickom, ale nebezpečnom freedivingu, s vynikajúcim názvom Najhlbší nádych (The Deepest Breath). A zo seriálovej ponuky nám neunikla japonská mysteriózna osemdielna príbehová skladačka - Horí ako papier (Burn the House Down). This week, we share our thoughts on the recent epic Netflix documentary called The Deepest Breath. We then talk through crafting a vision statement and how you can do it...
Jen chats to film director Laura McGann about a new freediving documentary called 'The Deepest Breath' which features renowned Irish diver Stephen Keenan!

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy share in a weekend of greatness, even if some movies are not as great. They review seven this week including a look back at a deep dive doc from Sundance (The Deepest Breath) and another from the fest involving an expectant mother and her post-birth choices (Earth Mama). Neil LaBute puts Maggie Q up against some psychos (Fear the Night) while Lizzy Caplan's son hears noises in the walls (Cobweb) and John Boyega comes to learn some disturbing things about his neighborhood (They Cloned Tyrone). But the weekend belongs to Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan whose films have been two of the most hyped releases of the year and they delivered a weekend for the ages. For all ages and everyone else. 0:00 - Intro 1:40 – The Deepest Breath 19:35 - Earth Mama 28:21 - Fear the Night 40:22 - Cobweb 50:30 - They Cloned Tyrone 1:04:20 - Oppenheimer 1:25:21 - Barbie 1:47:19 - Outro

Did you know that Christopher Nolan has a new movie out this week? You would be forgiven for missing it, because we've seen absolutely no coverage of it anywhere. Ahem. Anyway, the film is Oppenheimer, the story of the tortured genius who shepherded the atomic bomb into existence, and on this week's episode Alex Godfrey talks to Nolan about that movie, avoiding the biopic label, David Bowie, and more. Our other guest is Irish documentarian Laura McGann, who talks to Chris Hewitt about her new movie, The Deepest Breath, which dives deep (literally) into the intoxicating but dangerous world of free diving. And with Chris off again this week, Helen O'Hara hosts and is joined by Alex, Ben Travis and Sophie Butcher to discuss the films that made them cry unexpectedly, the week's movie news and, in an epic reviews section, cast their eyes over Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Deepest Breath, and They Cloned Tyrone. That's some serious Benergy right there. Enjoy.

Champion freediver Alessia Zecchini fell in love with the sport as a child growing up in Italy, astounding coaches with her raw talent and determination in pool swims and open water contests before she was even old enough to legally compete. From director Laura McGann, this thrilling documentary takes a look inside one of the most dangerous sports in the world, using everything from raw underwater dive footage to childhood home movies to chronicle Zecchini and Keenan's lives and careers. Director and writer Laura McGann (The 8th, Revolutions) stops by to talk about her exploration of the bond between Zecchini and Keenan that propels THE DEEPEST BREATH emotional journey into the stunning, silent depths of the ocean, a breathtaking place unseen by all but the fortunate few – where exhilarating accomplishments and the unavoidable risks that await them. Laura McGann's “The Deepest Breath” is a film about two young people fated to meet despite their differences. Alessia is driven from a young age to compete: Holding her breath for minutes at a time in both the pool and the sea. Stephen travels the world, torn between his desire to see new people and places and his longing for home, and a more conventional life. But it's also about the wisdom of age, as we see their fathers–Enzo and Peter–dealing with the tragic outcome of their children's intertwining. One eternally grateful, the other grieving, but coming to realize that his child's life was one well-spent. Join Mike as he discusses with Laura her visually and dramatically compelling film, one that almost literally immerses you in the beautiful, thrilling, but sometimes dangerous world of freediving. The “Deepest Breath” will be screening in select theaters July 14th, and streaming on Netflix beginning on July 19th. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy once again experienced this year's Sundance from the comfort of their domiciles, but that in no way affected their viewing numbers. In just a sampling of what they saw, they discuss over 25 films including documentaries about Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, freediving, our evolvement with the camera and the strange saga of a bootleg video store. They talk about some of their favorite midnight selections along with divisive tales of dating, bodybuilding and workplace relationships all featuring the festival's theme of the year – man babies. Gael Garcia Bernal inspires as a luchador while David Strathairn and Jane Levy put next year's award ballots on notice. Searchlight Pictures has a great new romcom coming to Hulu and bought a hilarious mockumentary from Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt. All that plus new films from Brandon Cronenberg and Nicole Holofcener are at the center of a pretty solid festival with titles you should take note of now. 0:00 - Intro 5:18 – Kim's Video 14:09 – Fantastic Machine 17:38 – The Deepest Breath 26:15 – Birth/Rebirth 33:41 – Talk To Me 39:50 – Cat Person 45:31 – Fair Play 54:14 – Still: A Michael J.
