Bob Ford is one of golf's greatest ambassadors, having served as the head pro at Oakmont for 37 years and at Seminole for 21 years (and serving both clubs concurrently for 17 of those years). Bob's accomplishments as a head pro (with some 50+ assistants having gone on to notable head pro positions at other clubs) and as a player (having played in 10 PGA's and 3 US Open's in addition to winning multiple Pennsylvania Open and Pennsylvania PGA championships) are legendary. We talk with Bob about how he got started in the game, his time as an assistant at Oakmont under Lew Worsham, his becoming the head pro at Oakmont at age 25, making the cut as the host pro at the 1983 US Open, the famous tree removal project at Oakmont which became the model for other clubs across the country, and his time at Seminole and how he and his wife Nancy managed those two jobs with three children. We also get Bob's views on the life of the club pro today, the role of technology in the game, and the state of the game today.
Bob Ford, Oakmont Country Club's former Head Pro, calls in to talk about the Us open and the property with all of this heavy rain.

Host Colin Weston met Jeff MacGregor at the 2023 PGA Show where he was launching The Cart Locker - a motorized cart storage solution for any facility that wants to enhance their operations while adding a new revenue source. Fast forward two years and we finally managed to align with Jeff's hectic schedule (he is also the Head Pro at The Glendale Golf & Country Club in Edmonton Alberta Canada!) to share his startup journey on The ModGolf Podcast. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/l7lQWsnT.jpg Here are three key takeaways you will discover from Colin's engaging conversation with Jeff: 1. How Design Thinking Fuels Innovation in Golf: Jeff's journey with The Cart Locker highlights the importance of identifying and solving pain points within the golf industry. His innovative approach to creating a locker system for motorized carts not only addresses a logistical issue at his club but also opens up new revenue streams for golf courses. This emphasizes how innovation can lead to significant improvements in the golfing experience. 2. The Value in Building Relationships Jeff's success is rooted in the relationships he has cultivated over his years in the golf industry. His ability to leverage these connections has been crucial in gaining trust and support from other golf professionals and clubs. This serves as a reminder that networking and building strong relationships can be invaluable for entrepreneurs looking to launch new products or services. 3. Embracing Sustainable Business Practices: The Cart Locker's design and manufacturing process reflect a commitment to quality and sustainability. Jeff's decision to produce the lockers locally rather than overseas demonstrates a focus on durability and brand integrity. This takeaway encourages listeners to consider the long-term implications of their business decisions and the importance of maintaining high standards in product development. These insights not only provide valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs but also inspire a deeper appreciation for the evolving landscape of the golf industry. Big thanks to Tourism Ireland and Golf Ireland for inviting us out and taking care of us during the trip. Our Wednesday in Ireland may have featured wind and rain, but The European Club was a crown jewel on the Irish Sea. We recap the amazing day, and feature some sound bites from the infamous Pat Ruddy (2:28). Thursday featured no golf, but some amazing sights across South East Ireland including the Dunbrody Famine Ship, Hook Lighthouse, and Johnstown Castle (22:42). We finished the week at Rosslare Golf Links on the southeast tip of the Emerald Isle, and chatting with the Head Pro, Jamie O'Sullivan (35:22). Support our friends! Today's guest is Michael Chupka, Director of Communications for Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Michael grew up playing out of Brandermill Country Club in the Richmond, VA area. He then earned a scholarship to play his college golf at JMU. In 2007, he set off for Oregon after getting an internship at Bandon Dunes, and as fate would have, it he never left! Michael has held many key positions at the resort in the last 16 years, including Head Pro at Pacific Dunes which then led to his current role as Director of Communications for the entire operation. Michael oversees all of the great media content and press that comes out of the resort, and is closely connected with the powers that be at BDGR including the Keiser family and the golf course architects who have made their mark at Bandon. We enjoyed learning about Michael's story, and got some insight on the newly announced 19 hole par 3 course that is under construction now! Enjoy!
