Avenue Red welcomes a debut mix from Tim Ohta, who has delivered a seamless 100 minute vinyl-only session of slinky, deep, smooth-rolling minimal house & techno. Prepare to be immersed in some seriously trippy and hypnotic sounds from a 20-years-in-the-game veteran selector! "I am 43 and for almost half of my life (since 2005) I have been collecting vinyl records with a tenacity worthy of a better use. Sometimes I even get to play them in some public spaces. I think this picture suits the mix nicely. It is my 'avenue' on Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, Russia. The photo was taken at 5 o'clock in the morning... after the club vibes ;) This mix for Avenue Red was recorded at home using a classic set-up: an Allen & Heath Xone:92 and 2x Technics 1210's. There was no pre-selection of records involved - the session was completely spontaneous, so I can't provide the tracklist. Thanks to Alec for posting!" For this edition of The Bunker Podcast we're releasing @otodojo's live set from their album release party at The Bunker in April. artist video explanation accompaniment: youtu.be/h-xMUetPiTg?si=9qj-4DNHj2dHUBtT artist statement: In February 2023 I focused on developing a new live set for my debut with @thebunkerny for an album release, named one of the best releases of 2023 by @mixmag-1. I trained the set with performances at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Perfect Party Look Book and at Forest City Lodge with Microtones in Ithaca. Maybe describing this can help you process some live set ideas. My previous approach to delivering this material live (originally at The Long Count Cycle, then at Technically Yeah) was using stems as a bedrock and improvisation on top. Even though this worked fine, it got a bit stale for me and I wanted to be as satisfied as a listener when a groove sets in. So I decided to go fully based on MIDI information and instruments, with an added challenge that my CPU can't take too much of a load, so I needed to make sure I disabled certain instruments before bringing others in. A disclaimer is that I am not fully endorsing all of the equipment in this list, there are some caveats that I'm happy to discuss. In Ableton I created custom instruments through stock plugins like operator, collision, wavetable - these instruments are divided into ones I cycle through and ones that are constant throughout the set. The constant ones exist in instrument racks and are freely interchangeable through chains - all of the parameters are mapped to the same knobs on my Novation Launch Control XL enabling me to wash through several instruments running varying sounds. I also have stored macro variations for those instruments in case I need some sound immediately without menu diving (like 1/16 note hi hats). The cycled instruments instruments are mostly from my tracks in Amphibious / Aural Spirits that are all controlled by four channels on my Xone K1. Initially I tried using Tip by K-Devices and Map-8 to disable a swath of devices (thanks One Child Policy for the tip!). Yet I found that the CPU load was comparable with just leaving the devices on and simply stopping clips. This made for a much better workflow. I slowly progress through the cycled instruments while improvising with the constant instruments and the main drums / accenting discussed below. My iPad is running Werkbench by Karl Scholz @karlalamusic, a sequencer sampler app that can easily form interesting polyrhythms and is great for anything sample-related, like live accenting, bass lines, drums, etc. For the main drums I didn't want to be too focused on sequencing as it takes up a lot of time, so I just wanted to scroll through patterns that I generate beforehand. I opted to use a modified version of Instant Haus by @alexkid which stores drum patterns for four-five instruments. Modifying this was a bit challenging as it is difficult to determine what kind of patterns I think can stay interesting over an hour time period. This is playing Smackos 808 Simulator by @legowelt-official as well as other custom drum instruments. For acid lines I am using a Roland TB03 on lend from Indy Nyles and sequencing the 303 with Sting by Iftah Gabbai as well as his Microtuner device coupled with note echos (I believe this is the most CPU intensive part of the set).I am using Ableton Push as a means to do miscellaneous control and Jaw Harp / Mic for some added organic-ness. I am running all of this through an Apollo Twin Duo and Allen & Heath Xone 96 at the club.

Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! My DJ Friends often called hunting for great tracks, "Junk Hunting". That's what we all do who love spinning House, don't we? We went though beatport.com & traxsource.com for weeks and probably listened to 2500+ tracks to buy 68 between the both of us. Jim took beatport and I took traxsource. I think our total bill was less than $140 bucks. In the vinyl days, it would have cost at least $1300 for 68EPs. Yup, it was $16.99 (b4 taxes!) for a 4 track EP or 2Trx double sided 12" or sometimes 1Trx, one sided bootleg. We usually only bought an EP for one cut. The GOOSE BUMP/ FIST IN THE AIR CUT.NOTE: w/ the exception of track#2 in this mix, which is a gorgeous SADE bootleg made by Jason B. of SoulFusionExpress fame in Toronto and given to me by an amazing DJ that I met online, Said Chaara. This is the fourth mix after we both bought from those mp3 stores. First one that we're posting. We are like kids on Christmas morning. Nothing like listening to a batch of new house w/ your best friend and DJ partner of almost 20yrs. We listened to the tracks for a few days first.Have enough tracks for a second mix. Going to raid stompy.com (Update: No longer in business. We now only buy from https://www.traxsource.com/ and https://www.beatport.com/ ) in next week first. It'd be nice to find 20 or more tracks there (We can only hope).Made w/ two pioneer 1000 cd turntables and an Allen & Heath XONE: 92 mixer and a pair of crappy headphones (Jim was hogging the good pair!). The instruments in these headphones didn't sound distinct enough and it wasn't loud enough!Sidenote: Invest in good headphones if you want to DJ, it'll make your experiences so much better- spend at least $200 on a pair. At the same time, work w/ what you have and start listening, collecting and MIXING!We hope you like this mix, it was made w/ childlike wonder & youthful love at this music we call HOUSE.As always - massive thanks to the amazing vocalists, producers, DJs and dancers (even in your homes or while walking about) for their incredible advancement of this beautiful musical genre!! Makes us all feel young, vibrant and extremely happy!!---------------Reach out to us and comment if you like our mixes. Interview : Virtual Underground : How has this Ømen story started? Ømen : It started as a hobby and side-project, as I felt the need for a creative outlet to cope with London's fast-paced lifestyle and have always been passionate about music. I used to play in various bands as a drummer, but electronic music always fascinated, particularly the more experimental and underground scenes. After co-founding MASS, a London based Techno night, my focus and drive to produce and play Techno crystallised. Virtual Underground : Where do you generally draw your inspiration from? Ømen : My inspiration tends to come from being mindful of my life experiences, the emotions they evoke, being curious, and always trying to push my limits. Lately, I find myself listening to a lot of raw, aggressive, and occasionally melodic/melancholic tracks. I also have incredibly talented friends that produce great music that I often try to incorporate in my storytelling. Having grown up in Bali, Indonesia, I draw inspiration from the rhythms, mystical prayers, and percussive elements emanating from my youth, while also reflecting the brutal and industrial reality of currently living in a major European capital. Virtual Underground : Could you describe your music selection and mixing process? Ømen : I am constantly creating a mind-map of tracks that would go well together as I listen to music daily. However, when it comes to designing a mix or a set, it reflects the mood that I am generally in during that period. Drawing from my ‘mind-map', I tend to already have a blue-print of how it will start and how it will end, but the rest is relatively spontaneous. Virtual Underground : Which software/hardware did you use for this set? Ømen : My mixing set up consists of two Pioneer CDJ 1000 MK3 (still using CD's), Allen & Heath Xone 23 mixer, and studio monitors. For music production, I use Ableton and occasional external instruments such as synths or drum machines. @omenlnd

After a winter shutdown the Avenue Red Podcast gets an increment via a fresh, punchy, stripped back Tech House session from a young DJ from Lima, Peru known as Meneses (real name Luis Meneses). At only 20 years old Meneses has already found some acclaim in his vast Pacific-coast city, most notably as a member of the Undersound Peru collective, which attracts a proper underground following of musically clued-up party people to Casa Galeria El Tábano - one of the key nightclubs in the Peruvian capital. This is the first mix we have featured from a South American DJ and were very interested to hear what it would contain when it appeared in the inbox... considering that you can hear it for yourself here, clearly we liked it! This is a smooth ride through some very direct, minimalistic and bare-boned clubby tracks that resemble cold, steel frameworks encrusted with their own characteristic embellishments. Picture each track as being like a unique electricity pylon structure (beats) decorated with it's own selection of subtle lights that shimmer and glow in a haze (synths/melodies/other elements)... hearing the set is like staring out of a fast moving train window, seeing them drift past your gaze: a consistently flowing image made of seamlessly connected entities, gently floating and modulating by with a beautifully kaleidoscopic quality. Just relax and let it wash over you. "I like to focus on pushing music from fresh artists who deliver quality, punchy, groovy tracks with spaced out deepness. The night, the darker hours, the distant city lights flickering... it's my inspirational zone where I really get into the music. I search create a unique and electric atmosphere in my sets, music that drives forwards in the club yet also sounds great in the headphones. This mix was recorded with 2 x Vestax CDX05 with 1 and an Allen & Heath XONE:92 mixer. I hope you enjoy the tunes!" Luis Meneses, January 2017 https://soundcloud.com/meneses01

Leaves fall from trees having expired their time and lay scattered across the ground in a colorful display of what seems to be despair for the tree. This is not the case however as the tree is just protecting and preparing itself for the cold weather that is approaching. In the end when spring arrives with warm air and fresh water, new leaves will sprout and the tree will be back to normal, stronger than before... I'm not posting a track listing for this mix. There is various styles of house music so prepare yourself for the ride! This mix was recorded using an Allen & Heath Xone DB4 Digital Mixer , an Allen & Heath Xone K1 Midi Controller, an Allen & Heath Xone K2 Midi Controller, Traktor Scratch Pro 2.7.0, 2 DB Technologies Opera 712DX Self Powered Monitors and a pair of Allen & Heath Xone XD2-53 Headphones. Here we are with the third edition of the DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast. For this edition, we've got a superb underground mix from a regular on the local DC scene, Boss Ross. Originally hailing from Detroit, you can find Boss Ross playing regularly in and around DC. Over to the Boss himself for more about the mix: "For those who might not know me I play Detroit house and deep techno throughout the MVA area. Playing records before a sometimes captive audience for the last 4.5 years has been a great pleasure and once again I thank everyone who has given me a chance to present the music I am fortunate enough to possess. This mix attempts to combine all of the elements I like to present when I play at venues like Flash, Uhall, Tropicalia, Zeba coach and pole bar and of course the backedbar. Those elements being analog treatment, acid lines, pianos and sparse vocals. I used two Technics SL-1200M3D turntables, one Allen and Heath Xone 22 mixer, two stanton groovemaster cartridges, two mukatsuku disc stabilizers, vinyls and one can of mandarin flavored seltzer to create what you listen to today. My principal association is to Composite which is a group of seven veteran techno DJs who play a monthly party currently located at Flash nightclub. Composite has several irons in the fire for some great techno coming to familiar places this fall. Additionally, I do gigs for the likes of 88/Forward, Vague Output crew in Baltimore, SelectDC,Trevor Keen and pretty much anyone with a shiny object and a drink ticket. It's my goal after 6 years to take what I've gathered in front of the fine people in this area and make my own tracks. As of now I will continue to collect and mix the best of what comes to my ears. Thank you for lending yours and I look forward to seeing so many great people out and about again very soon." Track list: KWC 92 - Dreaming of You - L.I.E.S. Cablecast 005: ALAN FITZPATRICK The continued rise of Alan Fitzpatrick is the biggest story in UK techno right now. Having enjoyed a rapid ascent since his emergence as the new kid on the techno block in the latter half of 2009, Fitzpatrick now enjoys a status as a highly respected and in-demand producer. His first album, "Shadows in the Dark", released on Adam Beyer's globally renowned imprint, Drumcode, demonstrating his ability to mix pounding techno with more lush, melodic sounds. From that moment he was hotly tipped by some of the biggest names in the game, including Carl Cox, Dubfire, Len Faki, and of course Adam Beyer. At Drumcode, Alan has found a natural home, and this partnership is definitely proving to be a successful one, releasing three chart topping EP's in Static, Face of Rejection and Insurgent Series. His abilities in the studio have not gone unnoticed, with the likes of Digweed, Joey Beltram and Nick Muir demanding his services. His style of immersive Techno has led to a ram packed gig diary worldwide, mixing it with the very best in the scene. A regular at the legendary Jaded After Hours, it only seemed right that Alan would be announced as their new resident. Where, how and on what was the mix recorded? This mix was recorded in my new studio which is built in a converted garage at the back of my house. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you will have no doubt seen the pictures of me building the studio! I Tech list for this mix included 3 CDJ2000’s an Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixer and a Red Sound sampler. What are your past experiences of Cable and in particular Jaded's Sunday morning affairs? Thinking about it I have only been to Cable for Jaded. I have played 3 times before and been twice for just for a dance after the annual Drumcode warehouse parties on London. In true after party style I can’t say too much about my past experiences as either I can’t remember or its way too classified for an interview but I can confirm for anyone with any doubts that it is the messiest dancefloor in London and a really great club with super sound. Did you think about these when you performed the mix?Yeah, for sure. I love the vibe at Jaded and I love playing on the system at Cable. This is why I was so excited to be offered a residency for 2013 and my memories of being at the events was certainly foremost in my mind when I did the mix. I wanted to make an hour long snapshot of what an Alan Fitzpatrick Jaded set will be like so it starts off deep and on the after hours to and build up to more peak time stuff. You'll be performing for 5 hours (or maybe longer) at Jaded on sunday morning.  What can we expect? It will definitely be a bit of a journey. One of my favorite parts of the past Jaded sessions has been the first hour or so when everyone is just getting into it, whether they have been to another club already or just arrived direct from their beds. It gives me a chance to play deeper, more left-of-centre tracks that I hardly ever get to play in a club. I will of course play a more familiar Alan Fitzpatrick style once my set starts to peak and then I have a few new bits and special tracks lined up for the end too. Anything else coming up that we should know about?Well, Im off on holiday next week for 10 days! When I get back I shall be gearing up for lots more touring including a trip to Colombia before WMC in Miami where I will be playing at the Drumcode showcase. Music wise I have three new remixes that are about to be released, with a remix of Renato Cohen’s classic ‘Pontape’ and Ben Sim’s ‘Riots in London’ for Drumcode and a remix of the new Adam Beyer track ‘Take Me Away’ for Drumcode’s sister label, Truesoul. Catch Alan this Sunday at Jaded After Hours Jaded at Cable / Sunday 10th February / 5am - 1pm DJs: Alan Fitzpatrick (5 Hour Set), Raymundo Rodriguez + Special Guests Click here for more event info

Following on with an older mix from the "archive" here is "Miniature Mix". This was originally recorded as entry for a DJ comp, in 2005. It sums up my style at the time and again the same clubs and DJs were influencing me then, as were 2 years earlier with my first podcast. It's stripped-down, underground house music with a darker edge. There are shades of deep house, electro, tech, tribal, acid and of course a few of the housier "minimal" tracks thrown into the mix. You'll hear the first release from "Louderbach" aka Troy Pierce and tracks from the following; James Falvour, Audio Werner, Someone Else, Onur Ozer, Gui Borratto, Ellen Alien, Falko Brockseiper, Lindstrom, Superpitcher, Justin Martin, Sten & more! It's recorded live using: 2 x Technics 1200's, 1 x Allen & Heath Xone:32 mixer, 1 x CDJ1000 and my brand new (at the time) Pioneer EFX:1000! There's feedback loops, FX and 3 deck mixing. Tuck in!

To mark the beginning of my new podcast series I've decided to offer up a DJ mix I recorded way back in 2003. "Ash Gardens" was the name of the street I lived on in Headingley during my first year at uni in 03/04. My musical influences at the time were parties such as Technique, Asylum and Basics. This shows in my track selection. You can see some "minimal" influences creeping in with Villalobos' track "Easy Lee" and some tech house courtesy of Steve Bug with "Okoubaka" as well as some Basics style dubby acidic house from The Lip Trick (Si Baker). There is also a few electro tracks in there such as "Come In To My Kitchen" by Joakim. The mix was recorded using 2 x 1200's, 1 x CDJ1000, 1 x Allen & Heath Xone:32 and an EFX500 FX unit..... ENJOY

dattrax: My DJ Friends often called hunting for great tracks, "Junk Hunting". The GOOSE BUMP/ FIST IN THE AIR CUT. NOTE: w/ the exception of track#2 in this mix, which is a georgeous SADE bootleg made by Jason B. of SoulFusionExpress fame in Toronto and given to me by an amazing DJ that I met online, Said Chaara. This is the fourth mix after we both bought from those mp3 stores. First one that we're posting. We are like kids on Christmas morning. Nothing like listening to a batch of new house w/ your best friend and DJ partner of almost 20yrs. We listened to the tracks for a few days first. Have enough tracks for a second mix. Going to raid stompy.com in next week first. It'd be nice to find 20 or more tracks there (We can only hope). Made w/ two pioneer 1000 cd turntables and an Allen & Heath XONE: 92 mixer and a pair of crappy headphones (Jim was hogging the good pair!). The instruments in these headphones didn't sound distinct enough and it wasn't loud enough! Sidenote: Invest in good headphones if you want to DJ, it'll make your experiences so much better- spend at least $200 on a pair. At the same time, work w/ what you have and start listening, collecting and MIXING! We hope you like this mix, it was made w/ childlike wonder & youthful love at this music we call HOUSE. BTW... if you enjoy this mix, then why don't you buy us a beer? There's a PayPal DONATE button on the top right side of this website. For Toronto or Global bookings: dattrax@gmail.com

dattrax: I made this on my friend’s Allen & Heath XONE: 92 set up with two Technics SL-DZ1200 cd turntables(pictured here) in her three floored Bar/ Lounge in downtown Toronto. This mixer outputs great crisp sound, and looks & feels great. It’s sturdy and responsive- that’s probably why I’m not into midi-controllers (yet), they feel like toys and all the knobs and slides are super loose w/ no tension. I think it would take a while to get used to and I don’t believe I can have the control necessary. This “92” is the only mixer that I’ve played on that splits the mids into two (hi and low halves of the midrange) on each channel, so that you have more control of the mid-range sounds. Great for isolating vocals, congos, washes, etc. Unfortunately I didn’t spend enough time testing the sound and the result after recording when I fooled around w/ the midrange EQ knobs. Since I know nothing about sound/ music, just what I like when it comes to house music, I started mixing and recording. I realised later that the way I had the mid’s EQ’ed for most of the tracks, the whole mix had a slight sharp shrill sound that is unpleasant to the ears at higher volumes. I removed some of the low end off the midrange thinking that it would enhance the mid, but it just made it hallow and too sharp. Another mistake I made was not testing my latest batch of buys off of Beatport.com. At 10mins “Tide” and 25mins in “Casualties” w/ Eryland Oye’s vocals, these two for some reason was overly compressed and mastered incorrectly, so the highs are too sharp and the bass is not tight. And it didn’t help w/ my poor EQ’ing compounding the situation. You win some and you lose some, but you always learn in the process. I can’t tell you how many good mixes have gotten ruined because of new things (different- software, hardware, etc.) I was trying and backfired. This was such a fun mix listening to that I didn’t have the heart to delete this one. This mix is full of exciting house tracks w/ techy grooves smoothly aggressively blended together. Starting two minutes in w/ “Anymore” by Badmouth remixed by Phonique. Another of my favourite vocal tracks begins almost 13mins in, “Moan” by Trentemoller remixed by Radio Slave. Within 34mins, “Calling You” by Electrochemie drifts in haunting vocals and hypnotic beats & grooves. Love Electrochemie! They probably couldn’t imagine their dark and electronic tunes would be mixed w/ these other house tracks. I want to make a 45min, Electrochemie tribute mix soon! BTW... if you enjoy this mix, then why don't you buy us a beer? There's a PayPal DONATE button on the top right side of this website. For Toronto or Global bookings: dattrax@gmail.com
