For this edition of The Bunker Podcast we're releasing @otodojo's live set from their album release party at The Bunker in April. artist video explanation accompaniment: youtu.be/h-xMUetPiTg?si=9qj-4DNHj2dHUBtT artist statement: In February 2023 I focused on developing a new live set for my debut with @thebunkerny for an album release, named one of the best releases of 2023 by @mixmag-1. I trained the set with performances at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Perfect Party Look Book and at Forest City Lodge with Microtones in Ithaca. Maybe describing this can help you process some live set ideas. My previous approach to delivering this material live (originally at The Long Count Cycle, then at Technically Yeah) was using stems as a bedrock and improvisation on top. Even though this worked fine, it got a bit stale for me and I wanted to be as satisfied as a listener when a groove sets in. So I decided to go fully based on MIDI information and instruments, with an added challenge that my CPU can't take too much of a load, so I needed to make sure I disabled certain instruments before bringing others in. A disclaimer is that I am not fully endorsing all of the equipment in this list, there are some caveats that I'm happy to discuss. In Ableton I created custom instruments through stock plugins like operator, collision, wavetable - these instruments are divided into ones I cycle through and ones that are constant throughout the set. The constant ones exist in instrument racks and are freely interchangeable through chains - all of the parameters are mapped to the same knobs on my Novation Launch Control XL enabling me to wash through several instruments running varying sounds. I also have stored macro variations for those instruments in case I need some sound immediately without menu diving (like 1/16 note hi hats). The cycled instruments instruments are mostly from my tracks in Amphibious / Aural Spirits that are all controlled by four channels on my Xone K1. Initially I tried using Tip by K-Devices and Map-8 to disable a swath of devices (thanks One Child Policy for the tip!). Yet I found that the CPU load was comparable with just leaving the devices on and simply stopping clips. This made for a much better workflow. I slowly progress through the cycled instruments while improvising with the constant instruments and the main drums / accenting discussed below. My iPad is running Werkbench by Karl Scholz @karlalamusic, a sequencer sampler app that can easily form interesting polyrhythms and is great for anything sample-related, like live accenting, bass lines, drums, etc. For the main drums I didn't want to be too focused on sequencing as it takes up a lot of time, so I just wanted to scroll through patterns that I generate beforehand. I opted to use a modified version of Instant Haus by @alexkid which stores drum patterns for four-five instruments. Modifying this was a bit challenging as it is difficult to determine what kind of patterns I think can stay interesting over an hour time period. This is playing Smackos 808 Simulator by @legowelt-official as well as other custom drum instruments. For acid lines I am using a Roland TB03 on lend from Indy Nyles and sequencing the 303 with Sting by Iftah Gabbai as well as his Microtuner device coupled with note echos (I believe this is the most CPU intensive part of the set).I am using Ableton Push as a means to do miscellaneous control and Jaw Harp / Mic for some added organic-ness. I am running all of this through an Apollo Twin Duo and Allen & Heath Xone 96 at the club.

Story: A dreamy cinematic ambient song to accompany your time mirror viewing sessions. Composer's Notes: This song was inspired by sci-fi movies, tv series, and books that explore peering into the multiverse and time-travel. The title was inspired by the Outer Limits episode "Demon with the Glass Hand". Producer's Notes: This song was produced in three sessions: Session 1: I composed 4 layers off-grid varying  between even and odd bar lengths ranging from 4-9 bars performing on Ableton Push 2. The interplay of these even and odd lengths results in melodies and motifs that round-robin in interesting ways and often result in call and response. I improvised a lead melody line with all these layers in motion performing on keys. You hear this melody in the final piece starting around 1m9s. The notes in the bell sound throughout are triggered using varying levels of probabilities to add variety throughout the piece. Session 2: I did a real-time mix down and arrangement session using Ableton Push 2 to perform with these "musical objects" to turn them into this song. Session 3: I did a mastering session doing some lite editing of all the automation for synth parameters and volumes. I added and additional automation envelope to the bells layer at the end of the piece to introduce increasing pitch randomization to the granular synth engine to cause the bells to drift to become more dissonant. Ivan Reese guest hosts. I've been intimidated by Jack Rusher from the first blush. I mean, he's wearing a high-collared fur coat and black sunglasses in his Twitter pic, and his bio includes "Bell Labs Researcher". So when tasked with choosing a subject for my first interview, I immediately reached out to him, leaning in to my nervousness. His reply included the detail that he's "generally hostile to the form" of podcasting. Terrifying. When we talked, it was about Lisp — several flavours of Scheme and Racket, Common Lisp, Lisp machines, Black, Clojure, parens of all stripes. It was also about aesthetics, and graphic design, the relative ignorance of typical programming tools to the capability of the visual cortex, and how to better tap it. This podcast's streak of discussions about Coq, miniKanren, TLA+, and Alloy continues, with the addition of QuickCheck and the like. Jack presents his work on a literate editor for Clojure called Maria.cloud, an environment that makes a number of unusual and interesting choices both in the design and implementation, reaching for an ideal blend of features that afford both instant beginner enthusiasm and unrestricted expert use. We pay our respects to the phenomenal red carpet that video games roll out to new players, inviting them in to the model and mechanics of the game with an apparent ease and apt ability that should be the envy of programming toolsmiths like us. The show ends with Jack sharing an excellent collection of plugs, ranging from academic papers by the relatively obscure Stéphane Conversy, to the aesthetically-lush programming tools pouring out of Hundredrabbits's Devine Lu Linvega. I am no longer terrified of Jack's persona. Rather, I am now humbled by his towering expertise and the wildly varied accomplishments of his career, and it was a thrill to get to tour them in this interview. I wanted to link to the Maru project but the author, Ian Piumata's website seems to be down and I could find no other canonical reference. There's some discussion on Hacker News and such. If you know of a good link, I'd love a PR. Scheme Bricks and Media Molecule's Dreams are interesting touchstones on the road to future visual programming languages. Ivan has an affinity for Pure Data and Max/MSP and vvvv. When talking about tools for beginners versus experts, Rich Hickey's Design, Composition, and Performance is invoked — and poor Shostakovich. Jack's main is Maria.cloud, named in honour of Maria Montessori. SICP gets a nod. Maria has proven useful at Clojure Bridge. Matt Hubert [Twitter] created the Cells abstraction that Maria was eventually built atop — it's similar to ObservableHQ. Video games like Steel Battalion, The Witness, and Dead Space have strong opinions about how much, or how little, visual interface to expose to the player. Complex 3D tools like Maya and 3D Studio Max are GUI inspirations for Ivan, where Jack and Matt prefer simplicity, so much so that Matt wrote When I Sit Down At My Editor, I Feel Relaxed. Dave Liepmann is the third leg of the stool in Applied Science, Jack's consultancy. Maria originally had a deployment feature like Glitch. There's a great talk about Maria by the Applied Science trio, containing a mini-talk called Maria for experts by Jack. Pharo is an inspiring modern Smalltalk. Fructure is a wildly cool new structured editor, and its designer Andrew Blinn is fantastic on Twitter. Extempore and Temporal Recursion by Andrew Sorensen offer some interesting foundations for future visual programming tools. Sonic Pi and Overtone are lovely audio tools by Sam Aaron, widely praised and deservedly so, and everyone should back Sam's Patreon. A visual perception account of programming languages: finding the natural science in the art and Unifying Textual and Visual: A Theoretical Account of the Visual Perception of Programming Languages are obscure but beautiful papers by Stéphane Conversy. Aesthetic Programming is one of Ivan's favourites, and the author Paul Fishwick just so happened to teach Jack's graphics programming class at Uni. Orca is a mind-bending textual-visual-musical hybrid programming tool by Hundredrabbits, who are Devine Lu Linvega and Rekka Bell. Notwithstanding that they live on a sailboat(!), they do an amazing job of presenting their work and everyone in our community should take stock of how they accomplish that. Ableton Push and Ableton Live are practically state-issued music tools in Berlin. (Not to mention — Ivan edited this podcast in Live, natch.) thi.ng and @thi.ng/umbrella are Jurassic-scale libraries by Karsten Schmidt, who wrote blog posts about Clojure's Reducers in TypeScript. I first got to know Jesse Terry during a trip to Berlin, and we've remained in contact ever since. The product 'owner' for the Ableton Push, he has been involved with hardware controller design and development since the Akai APC controllers. So when I got a chance to chat with him about his method - and interests - it seemed like a natural fit. Jesse has a long background with 'knob-ful' designs (he's an old-time analog head, like me) as well as 'pad-ful' designs (he and I also share a background with MPC devices), so he was probably an obvious choice for working on the Push controller. However, it is his attention to detail and tireless search for perfection that helps push the envelope of what we consider 'state of the art' controller systems. If that sounds like a sales pitch for Jesse - well, I'm sorry. But I really like Jesse's work a lot, and his willingness to talk about the fun and the pain in creating the Push and Push 2 controllers might help you understand why I feel that way. Enjoy!

Hello and welcome to episode 23. Our guest for today is @Ntogn (Entheogen). “An entheogen is a psychoactive substance used in a religious, shamanic, or spiritual context” This is mix is and entheogen for the mind. -Who you look up to?- I look up to creative, independent and forgiving people. Those who let their passions guide their life and shine on those who dare not. -Why techno?- I think it is because of the ritualistic elements in it. It is hard, repetitive and thus also a powerful tool for trance and to me it has become some sort of modern electronic shamanism. It is serious. It speaks and bends the mind. -What is a good techno party for you?- Anarchy. -How is your playing style?- I think my way of performing may rise some controversy among some colleagues as I prepare my sets for days. Sometimes a full week! People keep talking about feeling the vibe and choosing your tracks on the spot (which of course can be good!). But I believe in Creating a vibe and an optimal musical experience. So I choose my tracks with a lot of care and try to make it as pleasant and coherent a journey as possible. I like ranging my sets from deep to hard, dark to light and back and pick up the pace from maybe 100-110 bpm to end it in a ecstatic 135-140 beats per minute. Yin & Yang. This is an amazing experience, for me at least! Hehe. More technically I use Ableton Live for flexibility, controlled with a Ableton Push and a Allen & Heath Xone:K2 MIDI-controller. It takes a lot more preparation, but when you have everything laid out it is great! You can throw in compressors, all sorts of VST's and whatever you want on the fly and prepare loops so you can switch kicks, percussions, FX and do this kind of semi-Live thing. Truly awesome! -How did you fall in love with the genre?- It has grown since I started to DJ about seven years ago. Since then I have been listening to electronic music constantly and my taste has evolved. Today I indulge myself in deep, dark, atmospheric, hypnotic, pshychedelic, ritualistic and intelligent sounding techno. We talk about the Moog Sub Phatty (07:57), Ableton Push will be on display for the time (18:00)Mark brings out his Yamaha EZ-EG MIDI guitar (27:59) and Gaz promises to eat his Monotron (maybe) when we talk of something new from Korg (32:03). Avid are also apparently cooking something up too (39:00),which leads to a discussion of working remotely and also off the grid - with a great working method from Gaz to jam freestyle using Cubase (49:47) . Dave has a hunch that Spectrasonics are up to something too
