Let's talk money. Money is a necessity in business, but it can also be a pain point, particularly for product-based business owners because our investments, overhead, and risks are generally heightened compared to service-based businesses. We not only need to make money, but we also need to spend money for future expansion and growth. But where does that money come from? How are people doing this? We get this question a lot when we talk with our students. Many brands in our industry are self-funded, meaning that they use their own money for start-up costs and then they reinvest those revenues or profits back into the business. Another option is grants. We talked with Ashley Sutton of Hustle and Hope in episode 374 about how she has utilized grants to grow her business, and grants are funding that we do not need to pay back. Today, we're gonna talk about leveraging debt and funding as a means to expand your business. I do not want to glorify going into debt for your business, but I do believe and know firsthand that there are responsible ways to leverage debt and essentially use other people's money for strategic growth within your business. And that's why I asked Zeba Parkar from Treleaf to come back on the podcast. Zeba was on the podcast for episode 320, where we talked about the challenges she was facing in bringing a new product to life. She does these incredible laser cut trellises and modern plant accessories that she manufactures in-house in her studio and warehouse, and she has a whole team and a lot of equipment. Since then, she has expanded her business even more, and some of that has been done through funding from outside sources. Zeba and I catch up on what's been happening in her business since late 2023, since we last talked on the podcast, including how she did 13 trade shows in 2024. We discussed her approach to finding funding for her business and different loan options that she looked at, including Shopify Capital, and lines of credit options. We also talked about hurdles that she came up against when she started applying for this type of funding and she shared things that she wished she had known before she started applying for different types of funding. In this captivating episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with acclaimed author Angie Cruz about her delightful new children's book, Angelica and La Guira. Angie shared the inspiring story behind her book, which follows a young girl named Angelica who receives a special family heirloom - an instrument called the La guira - from her grandfather in the Dominican Republic. Angie passionately described the unique La guira instrument, a tin can-like percussion tool with a cheese grater-esque surface, played with a metal comb. She explained how the La guira is deeply rooted in Latin American culture, and how incorporating it into her book was a way for Angie to celebrate her Dominican heritage and share it with young readers. Angie also discussed the importance of representation in children's literature, and how she was driven to create a story that would resonate with Latin kids and families. She beautifully captured the themes of family, community, and the power of music to bring people together, even when faced with challenges. Transitioning to our conversation with educator Zeba McGibbon, we explored the critical role of social-emotional learning in early childhood development. Zeba shared insights about her Caring Critters book series, which uses charming animal characters to teach kids vital skills like emotional regulation, empathy, and problem-solving. Zeba emphasized the concerning trend of decreased playtime in modern kindergarten classrooms, and passionately advocated for administrators to recognize the immense value of unstructured play in fostering children's social-emotional growth. Her Caring Critters resources provide a wonderful solution for parents and teachers looking to nurture these essential life skills. Whether you're drawn to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Angelica and Laguida or the social-emotional wisdom of the Caring Critters series, this episode is a must-listen for anyone invested in supporting the healthy development of young minds. Midiã do hebraico é "contenda, julgamento".

One of the most exciting and encouraging passages in the Bible is connected to this Psalm. 2 Chronicles 20 gives us the details of the story behind this Psalm and prayer of Asaph. It describes a coalition of at least ten Gentile nations that had formed a confederacy to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. When King Jehoshaphat heard that they were coming he immediately turned to the LORD and called the people to do the same. (2 Chronicles 20:3-4). They prayed and sought the Lord to deliver them and give them wisdom about what to do. I love Jehoshaphat's prayer in 2 Chronicles 20:12, “O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You." God answered his prayer by telling him through a prophet to send the choir out in front of his army to sing and lead them to victory. God then destroyed the enemy miraculously (2 Chronicles 20:21-24). Asaph is also praying and records his prayer here in Psalm 83. In verse 1, he asked God to “not be a silent observer of their dilemma but to rise up to help them.” Then in verses 2-8, he specifically identifies the enemy armies who have come to destroy Jerusalem. I'm sure God already knew everything about the situation and who the army was that had come to destroy His people. Sometimes, I think when we pray about difficult situations and we are telling God what is going on, it helps us to face the reality of our situation and acknowledge that only God can help us. In verses 9-11, Asaph remembered some of Jehovah's great victories in Israel's past history, especially Gideon's victory over the Midianites (Judges 6-8), and the victory of Deborah and Barak against Sisera and Jabin (Judges 4-5). En Dor is not mentioned in Judges 4-5, but it was a city near Taanach (Judg. 5:19), which was near En Dor (Josh. 17:11). The phrase in verse 10, "as dung for the ground" (ESV) describes the unburied bodies of enemy soldiers rotting on the ground. The enemy was defeated and disgraced. Oreb and Zeeb were commanders (princes) of the Midianite army, and Zeba and Zalmunna were Midianite kings (Judg. 7:25-8:21). The victory of Gideon ("the day of Midian") stood out in Jewish history as an example of God's power (Isa. 9:4; 10:26; Hab. 3:7). Asaph closed his prayer by asking God to send such a victory to Israel that the enemy soldiers would flee in panic and look like tumbleweeds and chaff blowing before the wind. Like a forest burning on the mountainside, their armies would be consumed. The image of God's judgment as a storm is also found in Psalm 18:7-15, 50:3 and 68:4. If Asaph's prayer seems vindictive, remember that he was asking God to protect His special people who had a special work to see on earth. In verses 16-18, Asaph concludes his prayer asking for God's name to honored and lifted up. Before asking for the destruction of the invading armies, Asaph prayed that the enemy would be "ashamed and dismayed" and would turn to the true and living God. This is what happened in Jehoshaphat's day: "And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel" (2 Chron. 20:29). King Hezekiah later prayed a similar prayer for the invading Assyrians (Isa. 37:14-20). The armies of the ten nations depended on many gods to give them success, but the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob defeated the armies and their gods! "Hallowed be Thy name" is the first request in the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9) and must be the motive that governs all of our praying. The Most High God is sovereign over all the earth! A great lesson to learn from Psalm 83 and 2 Chronicles 20 is that we should start out our journey of life each day praising, singing, and seeking to glorify the Lord. We can do this by reading a “Praise Psalm” and listening to worship and praise music as we get ready and are driving to work! God bless!

2 Samuel 9: 1-7 // Tom NelsonEarly in David's story, he is described as a man after God's own heart. Having a heart for God means loving as God loves. David respectfully, honorably and it would seem warmly, calls Mephibosheth by name. The writer of Samuel wants to emphasize that here. David's loving action of speaking Mephibosheth's name is an encouraging reminder for each of us that one of the ways we can communicate love to others is by greeting them by name, others we may not know well or are meeting for the first time. God knows our name and calls us by name. One of our first acts of love is working to remember others' names and calling them by name. This is an example as loving as God loves. Do we actively love as God loves? Do we show kindness to our neighbors? Do we have a heart that loves and serves the vulnerable?

On Rich Text Book Club this week, we're talking about “Carefree Black Girls,” a new book from culture critic Zeba Blay, who also happens to be (full disclosure) our friend and old HuffPost colleague! In 2013, Zeba tweeted a post with the hashtag #carefreeblackgirl. She was an early popularizer of the term, which reached toward a conception of Black girlhood that could be joyful, relaxed, at ease in the world — carefree in a way that white girls were often shown as being. Almost a decade later, her hashtag has evolved into the title of a book of essays about Black women in pop culture and her own experiences as a Black woman and critic. In “Carefree Black Girls: A Celebration of Black Women in Popular Culture,” Zeba blends the personal and the critical in order to explore how Black women have created our culture, how they've been depicted in it and treated by it, and how these narratives affect how Black women and girls experience the world. As the subtitle suggests, it's a celebration of women like Josephine Baker, Mel B, Serena Williams, Countess Vaughn, Viola Davis, and Cardi B — but it's also a searching, tender excavation of the humanity of these women. Zeba examines how societal demands of and cultural tropes about Black women limit them, demand that they appear smaller or flatter or less complex than they truly are; she also, through her own experiences and those of the women she writes about, does an accounting of the suffering this causes. It's a beautiful and illuminating book, and we were so thrilled to talk to Zeba about it. This was also a mini-reunion, since we all worked together at HuffPost Culture for years — and getting to talk pop culture on Zoom again was, simply put, a huge treat. You can buy “Carefree Black Girls” here, or wherever you get your books! We've been watching…The new “Great British Baking Show” season.

The series #foodocracyforher is where I speak to women entrepreneurs in the food & beverage space to bring you their inspiring stories. In this episode we get to hear from Mumbai based @ZebaKohli of @fantasiefinechocolates. Her vision and drive enabled her to take the family business, which she had to take over at the young age of 18, and make it what is arguably one of India's first artisinal chocolate brands. Three decades later, this iconic lady continues to reinvent herself and cross many milestones, keeping the flag of the 75 year old family business in the process. What is her secret? Let's hear it from the Zeba herself, the lady whom I like to call the 'empress of chocolate.' Don't let the name intimidate you though as she is an extremely warm and compassionate person, who compares chocolate making to raising a pet.
In this episode, RJ Anurag Pandey talks about how Salman Khan tried impressing Zeba Bakhtiar and what happens next!

Zeba Talkhani's memoir My Past Is a Foreign Country: A Muslim Feminist Finds Herself is extraordinary, charting her experience growing up in Saudi Arabia and her journey to find freedom in India, Germany and the UK. It is an absolutely fascinating read and I loved chatting to Zeba about it – as well as her path to self acceptance after her hair began to fall out, and how the lockdown has affected her creativity. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Join me in today's episode where I'm speaking about an important topic: the words we choose to use in our business marketing, messaging and copy. Our words have power and they can make an impact – but this means we need to be aware of the words we're using, the origins of these words and whether, by using them, we are being the opposite of anti-racist, inclusive and diverse. In a pair of moving memoirs, Guyana-born Canadian writer Tessa McWatt and Zeba Talkhani, who was raised in Saudi Arabia, explore themes of race, feminism, heritage and belonging. McWatt’s Shame On Me is a journey through the multiple threads of her identity. In My Past Is a Foreign Country, Talkhani charts her experiences as a British Muslim feminist with nuance and generosity. They come together at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2019 to share their stories in an event chaired by Nadine Aisha Jassat.
Like many of us in our careers, Zeba wears many hats. She's a scientist, a consultant, an entrepreneur, and soon, a materials science teacher at a university. Zeba talks about leaving the bureaucracy of corporate life to try out a new business idea. She shares how she took her side hustle, a direct to consumer shoe brand with the aim of making custom shoes to fit a customer, and made it into a business, testing and iterating along the way. We talk reinventing yourself and being true to yourself by doing the things you actually like doing. We talk about how she tested her business idea, gathered feedback from customers, and how much fun it can be to bring your business idea to fruition.Listen to this if you're thinking about making your side hustle a full time or if you're a scientist pondering a switch from your current career path. Also, my new book, Punch Doubt in the Face: How to Upskill, Change Careers, and Beat the Robots has a new home. Join our community of curious career changers who are interested in the future of work: www.punchdoubt.comCareer change advice to love and follow from this episode:"Set aside an hour a day strictly for yourself, so do something completed unrelated and fun, something that's totally unrelated to your job. This will help you smoothen the transition.""Don't expect miracles. It takes time. Be patient and expect at least a year or two to have a meaningful change that you want to say.""Have a good support system. Surround yourself with people who are going through this, and those who support you. It will make all the difference."
Zeba Talkhani’s memoir My Past is a Foreign Country: A Muslim Feminist Finds Herself was published at the end of June and received blurbs by writers such as Meena Kandasamy and Ironesen Okojie. One of her previous essays, “The Difficulty in Being Good”, was part of the anthology Nasty Women. A Collection of Essays + Accounts On What It Is To Be A Woman In The 21st Century. In 2016 Zeba hosted Muslim Women Speak in London, “a micro-festival of interactive sessions curated, chaired and presented exclusively by Muslim women.” She has earned a degree in publishing and currently works as a production editor at Bloomsbury Academic. In this episode, we talk about the joys and pitfalls of writing about one’s own life, the slippery notions of truth and memory, unattainable beauty standards, the publishing industry, and feminism.

Here we are with the third edition of the DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast. For this edition, we've got a superb underground mix from a regular on the local DC scene, Boss Ross. Originally hailing from Detroit, you can find Boss Ross playing regularly in and around DC. Over to the Boss himself for more about the mix: "For those who might not know me I play Detroit house and deep techno throughout the MVA area. Playing records before a sometimes captive audience for the last 4.5 years has been a great pleasure and once again I thank everyone who has given me a chance to present the music I am fortunate enough to possess. This mix attempts to combine all of the elements I like to present when I play at venues like Flash, Uhall, Tropicalia, Zeba coach and pole bar and of course the backedbar. Those elements being analog treatment, acid lines, pianos and sparse vocals. I used two Technics SL-1200M3D turntables, one Allen and Heath Xone 22 mixer, two stanton groovemaster cartridges, two mukatsuku disc stabilizers, vinyls and one can of mandarin flavored seltzer to create what you listen to today. My principal association is to Composite which is a group of seven veteran techno DJs who play a monthly party currently located at Flash nightclub. Composite has several irons in the fire for some great techno coming to familiar places this fall. Additionally, I do gigs for the likes of 88/Forward, Vague Output crew in Baltimore, SelectDC,Trevor Keen and pretty much anyone with a shiny object and a drink ticket. It's my goal after 6 years to take what I've gathered in front of the fine people in this area and make my own tracks. As of now I will continue to collect and mix the best of what comes to my ears. Thank you for lending yours and I look forward to seeing so many great people out and about again very soon." Track list: KWC 92 - Dreaming of You - L.I.E.S.
