An early love of jazz was ignited by family jam sessions while growing up in British Columbia, Canada and she went on to study music at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Douglas College, and Berklee College of Music. We talk about the power of the riff, the pros and cons of monetizing content, her own music (of course) and the concept behind it, and why we should all be adopting the Alexander Technique. There's musical adventures in Morocco, a who's who in Flamenco, performing on cruise ships (it's not all plain sailing…), and getting the gig to play for the Royal Family in Brunei. In the Top 5, there's Taylor Swift, 80's Rock, jam tunes, playing an international jazz festival in Senegal, as well as a hot list of who we should be listening to….All this and why being a musician these days is like an extreme sport. The woman in the jail cell was proving to be a problem. It was November 13, 1942, and she'd arrived in San Juan de las Abadesas the day before. She was discovered at the train station with three strange men. When the Spanish officers demanded to see their passports, none of them could produce one. The woman was separated from the group and thrown into a cold, isolated cell. The notes in her arrest file only deepened the mystery of her identity. Her Spanish was formal and her accent sounded French to their ears. Among other notes in the woman's arrest report were her dirty clothes, and a general appearance that made it seem like she hadn't slept or eaten well in days. And notably, she couldn't move without displaying a bad limp. Whoever this woman was, she certainly didn't belong in San Juan de las Abadesas, a small mountain town in the far northeast of Spain just over the border with France. With her formal Spanish and slight French accent, the woman was obviously not a Spanish citizen. So she was transferred to Miranda del Ebro prison some 40 miles away, outside the town of Figueres, where her only comfort was a blanket as dingy and tattered as her dress. Though they didn't know it at the time, the Spanish Guard had managed to achieve what the Nazis had not, despite years of intensive searching: they had captured Virginia Hall, a woman who would go down in the annals of history as the greatest spy of World War II. After getting her classical guitar propers at a conservatory in her native Cordoba (Spain), spending a good chunk of the aughts racking up titles in European jazz vocals competitions and graduating in jazz guitar in Amsterdam, Susana found her personal voice: a melting pot of different influences from folk to jazz. She has toured extensively in Europe,USA, and abroad: Saitenprünge (Germany), Holland Festival (Netherlands) Silk Road Festival (Syria), Music Festival Amman, etc. Her Spanish roots come to the surface in the songs on her album Wind Rose, which was recorded with a five start team: Steve Swallow, Clifford Carter (James Taylor), Ira Coleman (Sting, Dee dee Bridgewater), Leo Amuedo (Ivan Lins, Chris Botti), Cyro Baptista (Paul Simon, Yo-yo Ma, Herbie Hancock). In this podcast you'll get a chance to practice with some expressions which are based on the verb "to get". And you will get a lot of mileage out of the verb to get. There are probably, maybe 150 different expressions, phrasal verbs, different things that use "get"—I don't even know how many, but a lot. So, let's get to work!1.  I don't get it. The teacher explained the problem, but I still don't get it. [= I don't understand.]2.  Sarah is super-sweet. She gets along with everyone. [= is friends with]3.  I don't get along with my in-laws. I don't like them and they don't like me. And my mother-in-law is the worst. I REALLY don't get along with her. ['we don't get along = we are not friendly]4.  "Willy, get up right now or you'll miss the school bus!" [get up = get out of bed]5.  We got off the train in Chicago and flew the rest of the way to Los Angeles. [= we left the train.]6.  He got through his exam in less than an hour.  [= finished his exam]7.  My dog would sleep all day if I didn't make him get up. [get up = get out of bed]8.  I hope you have enough money to get by for the rest of the month. We're broke.[to get by = to survive] [broke = have no money]9.  Her Spanish is good enough to get by, but she really needs to work on her accent. [ = to do okay; her Spanish is good enough for basic communication}10.  Please get to the point. You've been talking for ten minutes and I still don't understand what you're trying to get at. [get to the point = say what you mean to say], [what are you trying to get at? = what are you trying to say?]11.  She talks and talks and never says anything. It really gets under my skin. [= it really bothers me, irritates me, makes me mad]12.  You've had a lot of bad luck. You just have to tough it out and get through it. [to get through it = to survive it]13.  When her husband ran off with another woman, it took Mary years to get over it. [= to recover, to feel okay again]14.  "Oh, get over it. Missing a TV show is not the end of the world!" [Oh, get over it = It's not important, forget about it]15.  No, you may NOT play with your friends. Get back in the house and finish your homework. [= go back]Listening practice:16.  My little brother fell off his bicycle, but he got up and got right on again. [He stood up and climbed back on his bicycle.]17.  We got out of San Francisco just before the big earthquake. [= We left San Francisco]18.  If you ever smell smoke at night, get everyone out of the house immediately. [= Make everyone leave the house.]19.  Roxanne, all you do is study, study, study. You need to get up, get out, and get a life! [= stand up, leave the house, do something more important or more interesting] 20.  First she got a degree in Spanish, and then she went to grad school and got a law degree. [= receive a college or university degree] 21.  I rarely get angry, but when I do, look out! [= become mad]22.  My plans for today? Well, first I'll get some breakfast. Then I'll go to the gym and get some exercise. After that I think I'll get a haircut. And I suppose I should swing by the office and get some work done. After work I'll get some takeout food for dinner, and then I'll get comfy in my armchair at home and watch a movie. [I think these are all pretty easy!  :) ]Let's end this podcast with a substitution drill.  As always, if you find these podcasts useful, please tell your friends. Are you a person who just knew that you would be a singer? Or did it come later in life? Well, my special guest's journey started as a wee child telling people that she wanted to sing. Here is her story from having that deep desire in her heart to how it came to be a real vocational pursuit! Her trek will inspire you! Anaité's journey started as a little girl where she discovered the sound of singing with her voice! She had music as a part of her family—each of them had some love for music. But the culture of Peru was not geared towards music as a profession. Anaité started her adult journey by taking a performing arts study at the University. This degree was more about producing and being in plays, not necessarily music. Her time there led her to an exchange program in Albuquerque, NM. It was during her time in New Mexico that she delved into her passion of singing by taking as many classes related to it! Anaité had a wonderful teacher in Albuquerque who inspired her and helped her find her way back to singing as a profession! “I looked up to the sky…and I said, ‘God what do I want and what do You want me to do'?” “I just knew…I felt really strongly in my heart ‘I want to sing. I feel joy when I sing'!” “Go away ,society, that says I cannot sing!…I want to live full!” Anaité's teachers introduced her to different parts of singing (including Speech Level Singing), gave her the gift of understanding what she wanted to do and taught her about vocal anatomy. Then, starting last year, Anaité ran into vocal issues and ill health with her voice. It caused her to not sing for 3 months. She ended up finding an otolaryngologist who helped her get to the root cause of her vocal troubles. She started making major changes, including how she ate, slept, getting vocal therapy and incorporating stretching and SOVT's into her daily routine!! “If no one had listened to me, I wouldn't have known. A good vocal coach is necessary!” “Had it not been for me not being able to sing, I would have never stopped and checked my pain.” “The SOVT's have helped me to sing without straining myself.” The beauty is that Anaité found her singing voice again in a really healthy way! I love cultural history. I love it. I soak up details and facts and information about the history of different cultures anytime I can. I listen to podcasts, I read blogs, watch documentaries, and when I meet someone from a different culture--especially if they are a seasoned person, if you know what I mean--I ask questions. Or if I meet an older person, from my own culture--I ask questions. I think that’s why I loved volunteering in a nursing home when I was in college. I love hearing stories and details about people’s lives, especially when it comes to their culture. Now this is especially true when it comes to food. Every culture, every family, has that recipe, or that dish, or that particular food that has been passed down for generations. You know exactly what I am talking about. There’s been a movement recently, of younger generations wanting to make sure that the trades and tricks and techniques and such from different cultures are being carried on or passed down. There’s even a whole Youtube channel now, of Italian grandmas sharing their signature pasta recipes because their grandchildren don’t want the techniques to get lost. Now today’s guest is not only carrying on the traditions of her family and her culture, but she is doing it in such a way that it is impacting the next generation to come, in a way you’d never imagine. My guest this week is Cecilia Polanco, the founder of local Durham food truck, So Good Pupusas, and its non-profit partner, Pupusas for Education. Now, if you’re not local to the Raleigh/Durham area, you are probably wondering, why would I bring on a local food truck owner onto the show? While Cecilia’s story of how she went from a university scholar to the owner of a food truck with a mission is absolutely incredible. I told her this during our interview, that I want to be her when I grow up--and I’m older than her so--without further ado, onto my chat with Cecilia. What is a Pupusa? They are the staple Salvadorian food--a thick tortilla with stuffing on the inside--often eaten on special occasions. For Cecilia, they represent nostalgia and connection to home. They are a way to keep Salvadorian culture alive through culinary tradition. A Family Affair Cecilia is part of a very special family community in Durham, North Carolina. She credits the success of her business to this network, and is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to spend so much time with her mother through her work--learning and sharing these family recipes. EDUCATION AND INSPIRATION Her senior year of high school, Cecilia applied for college and scholarships. She took part in a program for students of color at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and wound up receiving a full, hugely prestigious scholarship. At school, she started to hear a different narrative surrounding herself--one that was positive and uplifting. This was a stark contrast to the mixed messaging she received throughout her grade school education. She adored her heritage-speaker Spanish classes, and was especially enthralled with seeing a Latina at the head of the classroom. Her Spanish professor became a huge source of inspiration, and she learned to believe in her own wonderful capabilities. BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS IN THE KITCHEN The idea of starting a food truck began as a family joke between sisters. However, when Cecilia began dreaming of creating a scholarship fund (to allow students her age to experience the same opportunities she was afforded during her college career) this joke took on an incredible life of its own. So Good Pupusas was launched as a means to an end, but it became so much more than that. It became a way to connect with her culture, family, and culinary traditions that have been passed down for generations. About Cecilia Polanco, Founder of So Good Pupusas: Born in Los Angeles, California to Salvadoran immigrant parents, raised in Durham, NC along with her three older sisters, Cecilia is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a Morehead-Cain Scholars and a Global Gap Year Fellow through the Campus Y. She started So Good Pupusas with her family while she was in undergrad in 2015 and the non-profit Pupusas for Education in 2016. She majored in Global Studies with a minor in Geography, received a Business Essentials certificate from Kenan Flagler, and is currently working on a certificate in Non-Profit Management from UNC. She believes business can be a force for good and that pupusas can change the world.
