Instead of, “Am I awakening through my work? Am I awakening through this relationship? Am I awakening through this drive? Am I awakening through how I take care of my body?” The journey of awakening begins to dominate the terrain. There is clearly an inner shift of priority, and then you start to use your life that way.” - Ram Dass राम राम राम I AM THE ONE I AM SHIVA

Danny Goldberg talking about his book, In Search of the Lost Chord: 1967 & The Hippie Idea ‘Danny Goldberg is probably one of the purest, most reasonable guides you could ask for to 1967.’ Ex-Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham.  ‘Weaves together rollicking, rousing, wonderfully colourful and disparate narratives to remind us how the energies and aspirations of the counterculture were intertwined with protest and reform … mesmerising.’ The Nation It was the year that saw the release of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and of debut albums from the Doors, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. The year of the Summer of Love and LSD; the Monterey Pop Festival and Black Power; Muhammad Ali’s conviction for draft avoidance and Martin Luther King Jr’s public opposition to war in Vietnam. On its 50th anniversary, music business veteran Danny Goldberg analyses 1967, looking not only at the political influences, but also the spiritual, musical and psychedelic movements that defined the era, providing a unique perspective on how and why its legacy lives on today. Exhaustively researched and informed by interviews including Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary and Gil Scott-Heron, In Search of the Lost Chord is the synthesis of a fascinating and complicated period in our social and countercultural history that was about so much more than sex, drugs and rock n roll.

In his new book, In Search of the Lost Chord: 1967 and the Hippie Idea (Akashic Books, 2017), Danny Goldberg explores the political, social, and cultural influences of 1967–a pivotal year in American history. Goldberg, who graduated from high school in 1967 and was influenced by the cultural of the1960s, presents a subjective history on what he sees as the legacy of 1967 fifty years later. In In Search of the Lost Chord, Goldberg examines not only the music scene of 1967, but the role of psychedelics, hippies, protest culture, Eastern religions and spirituality, politics, the Black Power movement, and activists such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Muhammad Ali, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Cora Weiss, and Tom Hayden. Paul Krassner is was one of the central figures of the counter-culture of the late nineteen sixties. He was one of the founders of the Yippies . He was a member of the Merry Pranksters. He first took LSD in 1965 at Millbrook when Tim Leary and Richard Alpert (now known,of course as Ram Dass) lived there. He was the Editor of Lenny Bruce’s autobiography ,”How To Talk Dirty And Influence People,” Most notably he was the Editor and The Realist an indispensable magazine for hippies and those who try to understand us. He was a contemporary and friend of Allen Ginsberg, Wavy Gravy, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs ,and Abbie Hoffman among others. In the decades since, Paul has written a couple of dozen books, recorded six albums (for labels I ran) and remained an important satirist and social commentator. At various times he has referred to his spiritual beliefs as a “radical atheist,” , “zen bastard,” and “free thinker.” Referring to his first LSD trip he says . “I realized I had to play with the mystery. Absurdity became my religion”. Yet when I turned off the microphone after this podcast and said goodbye and “God bless you Paul,” he instantly replied  “God bless you too. Fooled you didn't I? Paul quotes Mark Twain as saying that there is no laughter in heaven. For the record, I disagree with both of them. In fact when Paul laughs and makes others do so---that itself is a neighborhood in heaven.
