Aretha Franklin got her start at an early age in Gospel music. As the granddaughter of Gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher, Franklin was heard on her father's "gospel caravan" tours at the age of twelve. By the time she became an adult in 1960 she had decided that she wanted to go into more pop music, and moved to New York for this purpose. She signed a deal with Columbia Records, in 1960, but her career would not really take off until moving to Atlantic Records in 1966. By 1968 she was considered by many to be the most successful singer in the nation, and already crowned the "Queen of Soul."Franklin toured outside the US for the first time in late April 1968 through May 1968. She performed in Paris on May 7, 1968, and this concert would be released as the live album Aretha in Paris in the fall of 1968. It was Franklin's second live album, and the first for Atlantic Records where most of her hits were recorded. Some have criticized the backing band as not up to the task of supporting Franklin. However, this album captures Franklin at the top of her game at a time when she was cranking out some of the biggest hits of her career. It would be difficult for any supporting band to keep up, particularly one assembled for an overseas tour. Regardless, this is a great album to explore as a snapshot of Aretha Franklin at the height of success.Lynch brings us a high energy live soul album from the Queen of Soul in her prime for today's podcast. (I Can't Get No) SatisfactionThis Rolling Stones cover is the lead-off track to the album and to the concert. The Stones had released this song in 1965, and it had become their first number 1 song in the States. Franklin takes the tempo up for this cover.(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural WomanCarole King and Gerry Goffin wrote this song for Franklin based on an idea from producer Jerry Wexler. It originally appeared on Franklin's album "Lady Soul", and went to number 8 on the U.S. charts. It would make history when it hit the UK charts a week after Franklin's death in 2018, 51 years after the single was first released. (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been GoneThe original single for this live song was released on the "Lady Soul" album, and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was written by Franklin and her then-husband Teddy White. The studio version of this song utilized the talents of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who were flown in from Alabama to record in a New York City studio.Chain of FoolsSongwriter Don Covay wrote this song in his youth, and presented it to producer Jerry Wexler as a song for Otis Redding. Wexler decided to have Franklin record it instead of Redding. It was a big hit, taking the number 1 slot on the R&B charts for four weeks, number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and delivering Franklin a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy show “Laugh In”This sketch comedy show would capture a lot of American counter-culture of the time from Tiny Tim to "sock it to me!" STAFF PICKS:Ride My See Saw by the Moody BluesWayne kicks off the staff picks with a psychedelic song from the second Moody Blues album, "In Search of the Lost Chord." The song is about leaving school and finding that the world isn't what you thought it would be. On the album, the song is preceded by a spoken word introduction called "Departure."Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. RileyRob's staff pick is a storytelling song written by Tom T. Hall about a widow named Mrs. Johnson and her tangle with the PTA. When her teenage daughter received a note from the Harper Valley PTA criticizing the way she is living, Mrs. Johnson attends the next meeting and reveals some indiscretions of the other PTA members.Light My Fire by Jose FelicianoBruce features an acoustic cover of the Doors hit single with a Latin twist. Jose Feliciano is best known for the Christmas song "Feliz Navidad," but this Puerto Rican artist also had a hit with this cover that peaked at number 3 on in late summer 1968. His album "Feliciano!" is a selection of acoustic cover songs, and his most successful one. He won "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" at the 1969 Grammy Awards for this cover.Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty SpringfieldLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that writers John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins wrote with Aretha Franklin in mind. When Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler heard it, he thought it would be a good fit for Dusty Springfield who was recording her "Dusty in Memphis" album at the time. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:And I Love Her by Jose FelicianoWe double up on the Latin acoustic stylings of Feliciano as this Beatles cover takes us out of this week's podcast. Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
The Moody Blues may have been an afterthought of the 1960s, a one-hit wonder in most countries with their version of the R&B song "Go Now". However, in 1967, they were asked to appear on a stereo demonstration record for their label, Deram. That album, Days of Future Passed, became a major hit and revitalized their career. However, needing to sustain their success and without a symphony orchestra in tow, the Moody Blues released In Search of the Lost Chord, with the members playing all the instruments and Michael Pinder's use of the Mellotron making up for the absence of an orchestra. It was successful, but helped set up the pattern for their future releases.

If you're an anglophile and of a certain age, then you'll know the comedic operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, The Pirates of Penzance, Trial by Jury, The Mikado. They are all classics. I mean, I am an anglophile of a certain age, so I can sing the entirety of I Am a Very Model of a Modern Major General. I mean, really: “I am the very model of a modern major general. I've information, vegetable, and animal, and mineral. I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical, from Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical. I'm very well acquainted, too, with mathematical. I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical. About binomial theorem, I'm teeming with a lot of news. Ha ha, with many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.” Now, tell me, do you get that from any other podcast? I don't think so. And you may laugh, but I've won a pub quiz by being able to recite that. Now, Gilbert and Sullivan were actually all about the laughs. Their operators are very funny. But outside that partnership, they were both hungry to do more serious work. Now, really the only work I know is by Sullivan, Arthur Sullivan, and it's a song called The Lost Chord. And he wrote it on the deathbed of his brother. And the opening lyrics go like this. I was seated one day at the organ. I was weary and ill at ease, and my fingers wandered idly over the noisy keys. I know not what I was playing or what I was dreaming then, but I struck one chord of music, like the sound of a great amen. One chord, the sound of a great amen. It is such a powerful way to name a moment of insight, of awareness, of presence, of deep familiarity, of awe. So, are you listening for your one chord? Because hearing it can make all the difference. Marcus Collins, a creative at heart and a product of Detroit, brings a unique perspective to the podcast with his background in advertising, music, and academia. [28:47] | "The truth is subjective, right? The world manifests through your meaning making system based on how you see the world." [33:38] | "Culture is always evolving. It's always changing. But those things could change the vector. It can go left or right. It can go negative or positive." [44:22] | "We traverse the world believing that we have all the agency there is that we wake up in the morning, decide what we're going to wear, where we're going to go, we're going to do, who we're going to marry, if we're going to marry." [45:37] | "The influence of the social world in which we navigate is far greater than we give it credit for." [45:24]

TVC 650.1: Ed welcomes award-winning screenwriter, director, producer, and documentary maker Marc Cushman, author of These Are the Voyages, a three-volume history of Star Trek: The Original Series. Marc's latest book, Long Distance Voyagers: The Story of The Moody Blues is a two-volume, total-immersion experience in the six-decade career of The Moody Blues, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group that was the first rock group to champion the “concept album,” which they did with Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children, A Question of Balance, Seventh Sojourn, Long Distance Voyager and Keys to the Kingdom. Volume 1 of Long Distance Voyagers covers the formation of The Moody Blues, their breakthrough in the 1960s, and their “classic seven” albums throughout the 1970s. Volume 2 begins with the release of the Long Voyager Album album in 1981, shortly after founding member Mike Pinterleft the group (to be replaced by former Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz) and continues with the evolution of the Moody Blues over the next four decades. Topics this segment include why the Moody Blues were never nominated for a Grammy Award, despite having one of the biggest hits of 1972 with “Nights in White Satin,” and how the Moody Blues approached songwriting in much the same way as The Beatles. Because they make perfect sense and they were designed by a conscious being. Right? But the thing is, even the people that are teaching them aren't conscious about that level of it, most of them. Now I felt that I was born a Jew for some reason and I am wanting to find out why. But every time I get near people who would like to tell me why, the vibration of the reason they want to tell me somehow turns me off. Be Here Now under Maharajji's blanket and dig Danny Goldberg's third time on the podcast. Baba Here Love and Danny discuss Love, consciousness, AI, society, ethics, Jesus and more. All of our discussion is related to our spiritual awakening. “Danny Goldberg, President of Gold Village Entertainment, has worked in the music business as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. His latest book is Bloody Crossroads 2020: Art, Entertainment and Resistance to Trump (Akashic, 2021). Goldberg's previous books include, Serving The Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain, How The Left Lost Teen Spirit, Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside The Rock and Roll Business and In Search of The Lost Chord: 1967 and the Hippie Idea.” From https://www.dannygoldberg.com “What I'm suggesting is that after a while everything in your life becomes grist for the mill for awakening, and your priorities change. Instead of, “Am I awakening through my work? Am I awakening through this relationship? Am I awakening through this drive? Am I awakening through how I take care of my body?” The journey of awakening begins to dominate the terrain. There is clearly an inner shift of priority, and then you start to use your life that way.” - Ram Dass राम राम राम I AM THE ONE I AM SHIVA

This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 368 with John Lodge from The Moody Blues.John Lodge, legendary bass player, songwriter and vocalist of The Moody Blues, and inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is to release a new version of his classic hit ‘Ride My See-Saw' out on Keeping the Faith for Halesouth Ltd, distributed by BFD/The Orchard. The song also features Jon Davison of YES on backing vocals. The song was recorded live in Las Vegas on ‘The Royal Affair Tour', and appears on John's new live album, ‘The Royal Affair and After' due for release on December 3rd, and available now for pre-order here. This is the first single from the album, and Ultimate Classic Rock has premiered the video here: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/john-lodge-ride-my-see-saw-video "Ride My See-Saw" was written by Lodge, and was one of two singles from their In Search of the Lost Chord album released in 1967. Billboard described it at the time as a "blockbuster rocker" and a "mover from start to finish", and John's new version continues to be that ‘rocker' today! The song explores the idea of knowledge in a changing world, and ponders the question if perhaps what we are taught is not how things really are. Despite being 54 years old, the theme, and the sound, are as relevant today as they were back then.

After Christian opens the show with a public service announcement about his experience with the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting incident, where he and his band were playing when the killer began his rampage on their audience, he puts back on his Rock N Roll Archaeologist's hat and interviews the legendary manager and record executive, Danny Goldberg!'Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain' is Danny's newest book and is his recollections and experiences managing the seminal Grunge band Nirvana. After twenty-five years he journeys back to the four years working closely with the band and in particular Cobain while they navigate unexpected superstardom and the traps and travails of that rarified air where the end turns to ash and dust. Told with the help of many others associated with the band at the time, Danny acts as narrator as he reflects and comes to terms with Cobain's descent and horrible suicide.Danny Goldberg, President of Gold Village Entertainment, has worked in the music business as a personal manager, record company President, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. Gold Village Entertainment was formed in July 2007 and marks the return to artist management for Goldberg. A complete roster of artists can be found here. His latest book is “Serving The Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain” (Ecco, April 2019). Goldberg's previous books include, “How The Left Lost Teen Spirit”, “Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside The Rock and Roll Business” and “In Search of The Lost Chord: 1967 and the Hippie Idea”.From 1983-1992, Goldberg was the founder and President of Gold Mountain Entertainment, an artist management firm whose clients included Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. Directly prior to the creation of Gold Village Entertainment, Goldberg had been the CEO of Air America Radio from 2005 until mid-2006. Goldberg formed the independent label Artemis Records in 1999 and ran the company until January of 2005.Prior to forming Artemis and prior to the acquisition of Polygram by Universal in 1998, Goldberg was Chairman and CEO of the Mercury Records Group, which was the number one U.S. label group in terms of market share in 1998. The Mercury Records Group included music from virtually all major genres; pop, R&B, hip-hop, country, jazz and rock and roll via its labels Def Jam, Mercury, Mercury Nashville, Motown, Verve, and Deutsche Gramophone, all of which reported to and were supervised by Goldberg. Before joining Mercury, Goldberg was Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Records in 1995, during which time Warner Bros. was the number one U.S. record label. In 1993-94, he was President of Atlantic Records, also a division of the Warner Music Group, which likewise attained the number one ranking among U.S. companies during Goldberg's tenure.Earlier in his career, Goldberg formed and co-owned Modern Records, which released Stevie Nicks' solo albums including her number one album “Bella Donna.” Prior to that, Goldberg was Vice-President of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records and worked with the band from 1973 through 1975.
