I say a fond farewell to French pop star Françoise Hardy, who died this week at age 80. She was such a beautiful woman and was one of the main cover girls in Europe in the early 1960s. It's also Bloomsday on Sunday, so I've added a couple of Joycean references. Also featured new music from the July issue of Songlines magazine, and there were a load of new releases from all over the world on top of that. I added as many as possible! Also concert previews (Teddy Thompson on Sunday at The Rogue Folk Club, Missy Raines on Monday at the Anza Club, plus festival previews and a few tracks from Shooglenifty, too.) Oh, and a couple of tunes from Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, who performs in Coquitlam today at Scotfest.

After he “couldn't get arrested” in the 80s, post-grunge opened a window through which a then 30-year old Ron Sexsmith could climb. With his sincere, low-key ballads and simple songs straight from the heart, as was his 1995 self-titled debut. Produced by legend Mitchell Froom, it was a stripped back affair but also with the signature sounds of Froom and his engineer collaborator Tchad Blake (favourites of the crew here at The Art of Longevity). Those songs came as an antidote to the loudness of grunge and the hubris of Britpop. Sexsmith was a pioneer of a style that paved the way for a wave of troubadours including Teddy Thompson, Josh Ritter, Rufus Wainwright and many more. Of all places he was signed to Interscope - then one of the world's biggest major labels. “They didn't really know what to do with me. They called me a ‘cred artist'. Someone who had good good reviews and they could point to and say - 'we're not just pop' - so they could attract other real artists.”“I coasted on that for a while, but then around my third album (Whereabouts, 1999) I saw that it didn't mean anything to them any more. To have an artist that was just good to have around”. And so that early run came to an inevitable end as Ron was slammed into the wall of the ‘dropped artist'. By then though, he was into stride as a songwriter. No longer an apprentice to those amazing producers he has worked with, he was on his way to mastering the craft. Indeed, these days he describes himself as more of a problem solver than a songwriter. This songcraft is what connects Sexsmith to the greats. When I mention to him that Spotify pays him a compliment when its continuously play/radio function will follow one of his songs with Nick Lowe, Nick Drake or some other legend, his response is modest yet enlightening. “Well I didn't know that but one of the nicest things anyone ever said about me was what Randy Newman told Mitchell (Froom) that “I like Ron because he does the work”. And I thought, yeah that's true, I do do the work. That's what I try to do and for the most part. There's not a song I could play you where I'd think the song is terrible”.That's because none of them are. May I strongly suggest you sit back and enjoy the fruits of Ron Sexsmith's labour.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

When British band Scritti Politti originally got together at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977, they were a punk-inspired collective of art students and squatters with a penchant towards Marxism. In the early 1980s leader Green Gartside scrapped all that and pivoted the band to a pop/soul sound that paid homage to American artists Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin among others. Darren talks with Longwave's Steve Schiltz about his band Longwave, Van Halen, and of course, David Lee Roth! Steve talks about how Eddie's guitar playing was his entry to Van Halen, Dave, and Steve Vai and Jason Becker's catalogs, and how it informed and inspired how own work. Plus, the time Steve and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) were incredulous when a younger travel companion hadn't heard of, and subsequently did not get, the greatness of "Hot For Teacher." And Darren tells Steve about the Japanese import of the Spanish-language version of Eat 'Em And Smile, Sonrisa Salvaje (yes, you read that right). *** Steve Schiltz co-founded Longwave in 1999, and by 2002 the band was signed with RCA Records. Longwave's sophomore album, The Strangest Things, helmed by Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann, brought the band's music to the masses, and international tours with The Strokes, Bloc Party, OK Go and many more followed. Longwave went on an unofficial hiatus in 2009, after releasing Secrets Are Sinister. After years of collaboration, Schiltz wrote, recorded, mixed and produced Tonight Is The Ghost by himself — the first set of songs from the project that would become Hurricane Bells. The album quickly garnered kind words from critics and a following of fans. Steve's music has been featured on the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, alongside Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers and more. Hurricane Bells released an EP in 2010 and a second album, Tides And Tales, the following year. Another EP, There's Nothing Precious in the Past, was also completed. The band toured the States and played to crowds in Japan and India.  Steve has toured with the likes of Albert Hammond Jr., The Pierces, Teddy Thompson and James Iha. His playing and writing can be heard on Blue October's 2018 hit album I Hope You're Happy (for which he co-wrote the title song), as well as UK hits by Birdy and Gavin James, and James Bay's international 2019 hit “Bad”. He's also his own boutique studio, composing music for documentary films and ads for multiple national brands and companies. In 2019, Longwave reunited and released “If We Ever Live Forever”, followed by “Live At Bowery Ballroom” in 2020. New records by Blue October, Harvard Of The South, and the Japan-only “There's Nothing Precious In The Past” are all slated for release in 2020. While her style subscribes to no one genre, the influence of her Appalachian upbringing lies at the core of her music - heard especially in the lulling mountain drawl of her voice. She sings without affect and with striking clarity, delivering each song carefully and earnestly. Her early introduction to musicians like Doc Watson, The Louvin Brothers, and Peggy Lee have heavily influenced her modern yet timeless sound. Dori's songs often center on heartache and pining; unrequited and sometimes unconventional love are common muses for her melodies and lyrics. The twenty-four-year-old Freeman brought her songs to Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York for a few intimate performances and to talk about collaborating with Teddy Thompson on her debut self-titled album, released in February of 2016.

Derk Richardson and Betty Beasley co-host a 4-hour tribute to the music of Richard Thompson, drawing from the soon-to-be-released, career-spanning box set, Walking on a Wire: Richard Thompson (1968–2009), from Shout! Factory Records. On four CDs and 71 tracks—starting from the first album by the seminal British folk-rock band Fairport Convention and finishing with 2007's brilliant Sweet Warrior—this compilation irrefutably makes the case for Thompson as a peerless triple-threat musician (scorching guitarist, refined song craftsmen, emotionally engaging singer), one of the most consistently creative folkies or rockers the baby boom generation has produced. Throw in, perhaps, some tracks by his ex-wife, Linda Thompson, and his son, Teddy Thompson, and pepper the proceedings with new music by singer-songwriter Diana Jones (who toured with Thompson last year) and live tracks from British peers Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton, and you have a fine way to spend the final evening of the KPFA summer mini fund drive. The post The Bonnie Simmons Show – The music of Richard Thompson appeared first on KPFA.

Country Comfort. With a pedigree like Teddy Thompson's, an album like "Upfront & Down Low" is quite a surprise. The son of folk-rock pioneers Richard and Linda Thompson has had a mildly successful career but not one that would indicate a reverence or insight into the country music genre he pays tribute to on this album.
