Mirela and I met years ago when I was involved with PAs for Global Health, and our paths crossed again when I read an article where she was quoted about burnout. I had no idea she'd taken a job with NCCPA, our national PA certification program (I haven't met anyone who works with them) and I was very curious about how she landed the job and what she does there. Mirela also balances being a mom, devoting a lot of time to International PA Educators and PAs for Global Health as well as teaching (she has her doctorate!) and still working (how the heck?!) in family medicine. Listen to our conversation about how to create a life that has all the flavors of the things you most love and avoid burning out. Take home points: Start noticing coincidences—they're happening all the time, but you have to be open and curious to see them. Doing a career 360 isn't easy, but sometimes a challenge is exactly what you need to grow into the next version of yourself. Let your interests guide you with how you spend your time and energy outside your job.  Instead of asking, “What's in it for me?” try asking, “How can I help?” It shifts everything. When something rare or unexpected shows up, take it! You don't have to have all the answers right away. Ask yourself how you can craft a job with Pieces of your heart—what you love and what you're good at— Happiness, not fame or status, should be the goal; identify what truly brings you joy and move toward it. Burnout often stems from systemic issues; while institutional change is slow, personal empowerment can start today. We must teach PA students and early-career clinicians to recognize burnout, seek help, and reject the “just push through” mentality. Balance is not a permanent state—it's a daily practice, and even the most seasoned professionals struggle at times. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Mirela Sula. At the age of 16, Mirela found herself in her home country of Albania, engaged to be married. Not because of a teenage romance or a whirlwind courtship, but because of something much darker – the risk of being sold into prostitution. Upon accepting the proposal, Mirela made her fiancé promise that he would allow her to continue her studies. If he didn't, she vowed to disappear from his life. That promise was Mirela's lifeline. She was married by the age of 18, trading her freedom for safety. Mirela lived with a large family in a small village, where there was no money to even discuss. Her role was clear – to wash, to clean, and to serve the family. At the same time, she continued to pursue her education, gaining knowledge, and with that, came confidence and exposure to the world outside. As Mirela progressed in her studies, she began to understand the importance of financial independence and worked aggressively toward it. Mirela is a British journalist, author, and CEO and Founder of Global Woman Magazine and Global Woman Club. She is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of media, education, and women's empowerment. With a dynamic career spanning over two decades, Mirela has left a mark on the world by transformative initiatives and fostering a global community of over 30,000 female founders in her Global Woman platform. Mirela is the owner of five magazines, author of 15 books, leader of 27 club chapters around the world and the organizer of more than 500 events. A cura di Valeria De CubellisRacconti di: Elisabetta Baldisserotto, Elena Biondo, Irene Canova, Enrico Chierici, Valeria De Cubellis, Rosella Di Marco, Arrigo Geroli, Monica Ippoliti, Consolata Lanza, Giovanni Lavia, Giorgio Macor, Cinzia Montagna, Floreana Nativo, Francesco Paloschi, Laura Pompeo, Luisa Ramasso, Caterina Schiavon.

The Bad Product Owner: Unveiling a Scrum Master Anti-pattern, and what PO's can do about it In this episode, Mirela discussed a Scrum Master anti-pattern where certain individuals disrupted the entire team under cover of implementing Scrum. Mirela suggests that one way to avoid this anti-pattern is to have a mentor to support the Product Owner. In the mentoring sessions, Mirela questioned the PO about whether the work of the Scrum Master was causing disruption and noise, and whether they were escalating numerous issues. She advised self-reflection to identify any triggers for such behavior. Building positive relationships within the team was recommended. In this episode, Mirela discussed a team that self-destructed, highlighting various anti-patterns and providing helpful tips. She emphasized the negative impact of being overly focused on competition rather than individual work. Toxic personalities within the team and the acceptance of individuals who didn't align with the team culture were identified as destructive factors. Mirela suggested ignoring disruptive behaviors selectively and being mindful of personal anxiety when starting work. Working "around" difficult team members was discouraged, while assuming good intentions and engaging in one-on-one discussions were recommended. The Nonviolent Communication (NVC) approach was mentioned, and open discussions in team channels were advised to address problematic behaviors transparently. Featured Book of the Week: Competing Against Luck: The Story of Innovation and Customer Choice by Clayton Christensen In this episode, Mirela shared her recommended books. The first recommendation was "Competing Against Luck" by Clayton Christensen, which helps cut through the noise and understand the underlying factors in successful innovation. The next recommendation was "Thinking in Systems" by Donella Meadows, a book that aids in navigating organizations and comprehending incentives by emphasizing the impact of systems. Mirela humorously mentioned the phrase, "it's because of the system, man!" Lastly, Mirela refers to the concept of "OODA Loop," which is the cycle observe–orient–decide–act, developed by military strategist and United States Air Force Colonel John Boyd. The client was struggling with a difficult subscription service and wanted to replace their old system, but the Scrum Master focused more on team-building activities. This caused panic and highlighted the importance of finding a shared goal and fostering team cohesion. Several anti-patterns were identified, including the Scrum Master feeling useless and prioritizing "showing value" without understanding the project's objectives. There are plenty of examples of great onboarding into poor company culture and bad onboarding into a great culture. It's the culture that's important!   Onboarding for product managers is harder than for most roles   Product managers are at the centre of everything and the requirements of the role can be really ambiguous depending on the company. The product culture is often underdeveloped which can drag product managers down.   There's a playbook for this stuff and a structured approach that PMs can take   You need to come up with a plan. There are things you can ask for in advance, stakeholders to map and sensitive topics to uncover. These can help you work out where you need to focus to be successful.   Contact Mirela   You can check out Mirela's blog post, Blazing Fast Onboarding for Product Managers. We all have hapless friends who would lose their head if it wasn't attached. Maybe we are that friend! Matt recently moved in with his girlfriend, Mirela Petalli (our co-host), and Matt realized losing his keys kept making them late. Can mindful agility help?Matt and Mirela worked together. Matt is familiar with Scrum, an agile technique; Mirela is familiar with mindfulness. Together they take us on an exploration of how mindfulness alone can help us get more done. When we bring in agile, we raise the bar further. Does mindful agility help Matt keep track of his keys? This is the first episode where we get more specific with agile—weekly sprints, measuring outcomes, retrospectives—all in the context of home life.Do these practices bring knock-on effects? Let's see what happens with Matt's long-stalled exercise ambitions.LinksSubscribe to newsletter at https://mindfulagility.comFollow our social media: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedInJoin our Facebook community: Mindful Agility CommunityCreditsThe sting separator sound used in this episode is a derivative of Swing beat 120 xylophone side-chained by Casonika used under license CC BY by Daniel Greening.
