A former wildlife biologist, Carla Wainwright now helps women connect with the divine feminine.Carla believes that the wisdom we tap into when reconnected with our bodies and the divine feminine can guide us in running our businesses, navigating our relationships, and raising our children. “When we recognize that the body has this wisdom that we can listen to, this really then begins to radically shift how we operate in the world,” Carla explains. “Because we are able to connect to the deeper ‘felt-sense’ — that inner knowing.”Leveraging this connection helps us as entrepreneurs, as we will operate from a place of deep inner knowing, rather than just letting our egos make guesses... and hoping for the best!Carla herself made an unlikely decision based on this wisdom. The day after deciding to make the leap from biologist to bodyworker, she received an offer for a government job — one that just a year earlier would have been a dream job! Today I'm joined by a long time friend of mine and Co-Founder of ‘The Dinner Party', Carla Fernandez! Carla set out to start this organization shortly after her father's passing from brain cancer when she was 21 years old.Experiencing loss at such a young age made her realize how out of place she felt in the support groups and therapy sessions she'd attended previously. Wanting to create a sense of community and comfort in times of hardship was something she craved and with the help of many other young entrepreneurs such as herself, ‘The Dinner Party' was born. The company's aim is to address ‘the crisis of isolation' and help build a community through welcoming and safe dinner parties, surrounded by people going through similar situations. Grief can often feel like something we have to go through alone, but that can't be further from the truth. Through the work Carla and her team have done over the years, they have shown that finding your people even in the hardest of times is possible and something that should be embraced. If you're interested to learn more or are someone in need of these resources yourself, then tune in to Episode 4 of What Didn't Kill You! Some Questions I Ask:What is ‘The Dinner Party'? A few years ago content creators made a big deal about a “pivot to video,” meaning they were de-prioritizing the written word online and putting resources behind video. But as Carla tells us, video isn’t everything. There are still plenty of people who want to scan or read content online. Not everyone wants to watch a 10-minute how-to video. Millions of internet users still want to read a quick article to get the tips or advice they need. The key is to practice proper blogging procedures and hygiene. That means you have to have good headlines, you have to have great subheds so someone who is looking for specific information can scan and find it easily, and you have to organize your information in a way that makes sense to a reader who’s scanning your content. SEO is a long game, and it’s worth it Carla has been blogging since 2010, and it’s still paying off for her, thanks to her search engine optimization. Her blog comes up a lot not only for people looking for interior design ideas, but also for interior designers looking to advance their business. Using proper keywording and subheds, etc., has allowed Carla’s blog to be a trusted source in Google search results. Darla asked Carla on this week’s episode: How many of your clients come through your blog. And Carla had a startling answer: All of them. And what she means is that she gets a lot of clients who find her blog and then hire her, but also that clients who are considering her find her blog and then spend time on it, and the blog, without trying to be, becomes a sales funnel for her. Are you a confident person? Do you believe in yourself? Do you love yourself, your whole self? Whether the answer is yes, no or sometimes or I dunno?! We know you're going to get some gold from this podcast episode. Right now, we are both the most confident we've ever been and we're keen to keep this going and growing for the rest of our lives. So, let's talk, how to get more confident!  Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.― Lao Tzu Here's the stuff we talk about... What is confidence? What does it mean to be a confident person?  We share our personal stories. How Emma went from 'the shy' kid to becoming pretty darn confident in herself (hell yeah). How self-doubt, fear and a negative mind ruled for many years (and how it still comes and goes).  How Carla was pretty much born confident, how school bullies impacted her negatively. How her confidence became a mask to hide the hurt from the bullies.  The 3rd chakra, the solar plexus. What it is and the things we can do energetically and physically to unblock this chakra.  How hanging out with less confident people or more confident people can influence you. But it's your responsibility. What you can do to get more confident. These are real easy and do-able steps.  To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Links to stuff we talk about... The Amy Cuddy body language TED talk.  Avoid avoiding conflict TEDx talk. Take a listen to the episode and share with anyone who might need it! The smartest thing Carla ever did with regards to writing her book is collaborating with a person who was just as emotionally involved as she was. She was so used to going full throttle all the time she needed to learn that you can ask for help or even quit it for a while and go back to it later. She found that using online collaboration tools allowed the words to flow and increased her and her partner’s productivity. The only part of the process she found difficult was when asking for blurbs, even when Venus Williams offered to write cover quote.   Key Takeaways: [2:40] How Carla got to where she is today [4:20] Blogging is great because there is instant feedback [5:42] Simple teaching stemmed from simple learning techniques [6:55] My name was cutesy because that’s what bloggers did [9:04] People embraced my change [9:59] Struggle is universal, it’s more than fitness [11:30] Apologizing for what? [11:59] Being processed oriented versus outcome oriented [13:26] The smartest thing we ever did was become emotionally invested [14:40] Sorry this letter is so long. I didn’t have time to make it shorter [15:57] Splitting up the chapters helped us enjoy the tight deadline [18:12] This is how I flow now [19:53] Collaboration can open up so many ideas [20:41] The book was the easy part, the blurbs caused the friction [22:33] The cover quote was a reach [23:58] The Art of Asking [25:38] I rock the NO [26:27] It was the right time to write the book [27:20] Quitting and moving on doesn’t mean that you can’t go back to it [27:54] Well where to now? What’s next? [29:30] The beginning of the #wycwyc [30:18] All of our struggles are the same [30:59] Comfortability with yourself   Mentions: CarlaBirnberg #wycwyc TheArtofAsking - Amanda Palmer
