Ken Loach is one of the greatest film directors of all time and a true British icon. He is known for his powerful, socially engaged films including ‘I Daniel Blake', which won him a BAFTA for outstanding British film. At 87 years old, Ken's career spans nearly six decades and his long list of awards includes the first ever British Independent Film Award and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival, which he has won twice. His films shine a light on real human stories and the social injustices of working class lives. From Kes about a bullied and abused working class boy who trains his kestrel, to The Wind That Shakes The Barley which stars Cillian Murphy fighting for Irish independence, to his most recent film, The Old Oak set in an old mining community in the north east of england, where syrian refugees are being homed. In the 60s and 70s some of his work was considered controversial and added to conversations around homelessness, abortion, poverty and much more. In the 80s some of his work was banned. In this illuminating episode, as well as sharing his biggest life changes, Ken discusses whether films can create change, his early life, starting out as a director at the BBC “rattling a few cages”, the social issues highlighted in his films, struggling to retire and what you can do to help change the world. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing the stage adaptation of Ken Loach's 2016 award-winning film, ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' by Comedian, Playwright and Actor Dave Johns who also played the lead role of Daniel in Ken Loach's film as the production visited the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Professional Audio Describer Jonathan Nash provided the live description for both the dry run and the audio described performance at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is adapted by Dave Johns from the film directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty, and produced by Rebecca O'Brien for Sixteen Films. Dan is a carpenter. A Geordie through and through. Just on the mend after a heart attack. Katie has just arrived from London. Finally got a council house for her and the kids.  A fresh start. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is one of the most important stories of a generation. A glimpse behind the headlines and the stark reality of what happens when the political system is stacked against you. With 14.5 million people living in poverty in the UK, this is not fiction. It is reality. A touching and vital story of how people come together in the face of adversity and how sometimes creating a family to support you just isn't enough. The show is adapted for stage by Dave Johns who played Daniel Blake in the award winning 2016 film. Presented by Northern Stage, Birmingham Rep, ETT, Oldham Coliseum and tiny dragon Productions, in association with Cardboard Citizens. Age Guideline 12+ More about the tour of ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' can be found on either the northern Stage website - https://northernstage.co.uk/whats-on/i-daniel-blake-2/ Or the English Touring Theatre Company's website - https://ett.org.uk/our-work/i-daniel-blake/ Image: RNIB Connect Radio Bright Green 20th Anniversary Logo

Starting out this short but sweet episode is a quick audio review of the latest film from Ken Loach called I DANIEL BLAKE, which I happily viewed via online screener and very much recommend.  Then I had the pleasure of talking with two very talented filmmakers that have recently released independent films worth seeking out. And both of them involve music! First up, Zoe Lister-Jones' feature film debut is BAND AID, a refreshingly authentic portrayal of relationship dynamics and marital strife.  It's essentially a 90-minute indie pop rock song, fueled by Jones' personal experience as well as a love of music, for the couple portrayed in the film work out their issues together by forming a band and writing songs.  I thought this film was remarkably entertaining, smart, and surprisingly moving as it goes along.  Plus you've got co-star Fred Armisen on drums! Secondly, I often freelance for Troy Anderson of Andersonvision.com, who set me up with an interview of the director of PAST LIFE.  Avi Nesher joins me to talk about his latest work -- a true story stemming from personal experiences in Israel that cut to the core of both the micro and the macro.  Featuring classical musicians who strive for more in life, this is a truly compelling drama surrounding another relationship, this time between two sisters who uncover family secrets from the past that they each have to confront.  All three films covered in this episode I recommend seeking out immediately and hope you enjoy the conversations I was grateful to have with Zoe and Avi!
