Copyright Outplay

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing the stage adaptation of Ken Loach's 2016 award-winning film, ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' by Comedian, Playwright and Actor Dave Johns who also played the lead role of Daniel in Ken Loach's film as the production visited the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Professional Audio Describer Jonathan Nash provided the live description for both the dry run and the audio described performance at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is adapted by Dave Johns from the film directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty, and produced by Rebecca O'Brien for Sixteen Films. Dan is a carpenter. A Geordie through and through. Just on the mend after a heart attack. Katie has just arrived from London. Finally got a council house for her and the kids.  A fresh start. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is one of the most important stories of a generation. A glimpse behind the headlines and the stark reality of what happens when the political system is stacked against you. With 14.5 million people living in poverty in the UK, this is not fiction. It is reality. A touching and vital story of how people come together in the face of adversity and how sometimes creating a family to support you just isn't enough. The show is adapted for stage by Dave Johns who played Daniel Blake in the award winning 2016 film. Presented by Northern Stage, Birmingham Rep, ETT, Oldham Coliseum and tiny dragon Productions, in association with Cardboard Citizens. Age Guideline 12+ More about the tour of ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' can be found on either the northern Stage website - https://northernstage.co.uk/whats-on/i-daniel-blake-2/ Or the English Touring Theatre Company's website - https://ett.org.uk/our-work/i-daniel-blake/ Image: RNIB Connect Radio Bright Green 20th Anniversary Logo

We're talking about the first ever stage adaptation of Ken Loach's and Paul Laverty's multi-award winning 2016  film  I, Daniel Blake. The production, which is touring the UK, opened at Northern Stage Newcastle to rave critical reviews and passionate audience reactions.   Dave Johns, who adapted it for the stage, played Daniel in the original film, winning Best Actor at the British Independent Awards and Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards for his performance. Davey Nellist, who plays Daniel in this new stage version, is best known for his roles as Mike Stamford in Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and more recently in the TV series Stonehouse with Matthew McFadden.   Dave and Davey tell us how the play is deliberately being hailed as non-fiction and a very real story about poverty and homelessness in Newcastle today.  The city had one foodbank in 2016 but now has seven. Dave also tells us how he landed the part in the movie, having been a comedian and formerly a bricklayer. I, Daniel Blake tours  till mid-November to Birmingham, Manchester, Exeter, Liverpool, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Stratford, Northampton, Coventry and Guildford, before returning to Northern Stage in September. The Liverpool Biennial, the UK's largest contemporary visual arts festival, begins this weekend. Arts journalist Laura Robertson reviews, and the curator of the biennial, Khanyisile Mbongwa, discuss coming up with this year's theme – uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost things – which reflects on Liverpool's history as a slave port but also provides a sense of hope and joy. Nobel Prize-winning Italian playwright Dario Fo was famous for plays that careered between farce and current affairs. He wrote his most successful plays during Italy's years of economic crisis in the 1970s, and there's been an upsurge in productions of them in the UK this year. Playwrights Deborah McAndrew and Tom Basden discuss their respective adaptations of They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay! and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. For Dave Johns, the lead role in Ken Loach's multi-award winning film, I, Daniel Blake, marked his debut as a film actor. His performance as a man trapped and impoverished in the Catch-22 of the benefits system was admired by many. Now Dave has adapted the film for the stage. It opened at Northern Stage in Newcastle and begins a nationwide tour next week. He talks to Nick Ahad retelling the story of the film in a new way. Presenter: Nick Ahad Presenter: Ekene Akalawu

“Wasting my time, employers' time, your time. And all it does is humiliate me, grind me down. Or is that the point?” This week, in a very special bumper episode of Spoiler, we’re watching Ken Loach’s 2016 drama ‘I, Daniel Blake’ and the team are all in agreement that it is one of the most important films of its era. With strong opinions coming from all sides, emotions run high as we discuss the benefits system, food banks, homelessness and dignity. Paul asks whether the depiction of job centre employees in ‘I, Daniel Blake’ is fair and Andy, who has been through several periods of unemployment, shares some of his own experiences of the system. Rachael celebrates the film’s refusal to pander to stereotypical expectations regarding the unemployed and everyone doffs their caps to the performances of Hayley Squires and Dave Johns, who make a film that could have seemed relentlessly bleak into something genuinely entertaining. Paul shares some of his much loved IMDB trivia about job centre water-coolers and the whole team share the specific moments in the film where they shed tears, including the already-famous food bank scene. Elsewhere, Andy takes a look at some other screen depictions of unemployment including ‘Bicycle Thieves’, ‘Drifting Clouds’ and ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’. This week’s scale: Why Aye, Daniel Blake or Nay Chance, Daniel Blake

I had the unfortunate experience of going to see I, Daniel Blake in a bad mood. Despite agreeing a lot with what the movie wanted to say, I could not handle the preaching tone. So I came out of it conflicted. Nevertheless I have been ever since recommending everybody to go and see it. My mother on the other hand found deep connection with the story straight away. Next to being in general interested in the subject of poverty, she found the movie showing the audience the struggle that she goes through in her daily life. Just like Dave Johns in the movie, she belongs to the older generation who is less than ready to take in the complex digital transition of our social systems. Spoilers: We don't go into the plot details so it is safe to listen our episode even if you have not seen the movie.
