John Isberg director of Final Summer, took time out of his busy schedule, while the set was being prepped, to talk to us. He started making short films in high school and wanted to go to film school but only managed Intro to Film before he dropped out because of the expense and his ADHD. In his 20s he was in bands and during the process of making music videos he became very interested in the cinematography and lighting aspect of it. During the second music video while he was helping the director, it ignited a renewed interested in film. After moving to Champaign, Il and playing in bands and teaching middle school, a movie was being made in town called Consumed (directed by Daryl Wein and co-written, co-produced and starring Zoe Lister-Jones) and John joined the crew as Grip and he loved it, even though his interest was really lighting. [Grip - A grip is a technician who sets up, operates, and maintains the rigging and equipment that supports the camera (i.e., dollies, cranes, tracks, jibs, tripods, process trailers, etc.) and lighting (stands, diffusers, nets, etc.) to achieve the director and cinematographer's desired shot.] After wrapping Consumed he developed depression even in the midst of the euphoria. He had the bug, bought a camera and started shooting music videos for bands around town. Then he interned with a local production company, Shatterglass Studios where he helped on commercial shoots until he went out on his own. This is part one, don't miss part two coming up soon! Zoe Lister-Jones: a writer, producer, director, and actor you likely already know from her many film and television appearances, recent guest Zach Braff's film ‘A Good Person' and Ari Aster's recently released ‘Beau Is Afraid' starring Joaquin Phoenix. Zoe wrote, directed, and produced the film ‘Band-Aid.' She has also starred in films she co-wrote, including ‘Breaking Upwards,' ‘Consumed, and ‘How It Ends,' which she also co-directed. Today we dive into the creative process and philosophical inquiry behind Zoe's newest creation, Slip—the binge-worthy comedy series with a bit of a surreal sci-fi twist that involves parallel realities and alternate identities. Not only did Zoe create the series. Not only does she star in it. Not only did she write all seven episodes, she also directed each and every one of those episodes, an absolutely stunning achievement. We dig into the messy terrain of love, marriage, fidelity, divorce, addiction, and self-discovery that Slip explores. We talk about what it's like growing up in New York City in a family of artists, making deeply authentic work, the responsibility she shoulders to empower other women in the arts, and ultimately, how to quiet the hungry ghosts lurking within us all. Zoe is an artist in the truest sense of the word and I loved getting to know her through this conversation. It's a privilege to share her story with you today. It's a monster week for reviews this week with one especially huge Marvel movie at the cinema and some very big titles debuting on TV. Just two notes for this episode that I (co-host Dan Barrett) think are hugely worth making mention of: 1. We review both the TV show Slip and the movie Beau is Afraid. Both involve Zoe Lister Jones and somehow Dan neglects to mention this fact during the podcast. What a fool. 2. The review for Beau Is Afraid does involve some minor-ish spoilers. So, keep that in mind. The film is a few weeks into release, so if it sounds interesting, perhaps go see it pretty soon. This week Dan and Simon review: Bupkis (Peacock in the US, Binge in Australia) Guardians of The Galaxy vol 3 (In cinemas now) Silo (Apple TV+) Olga (In cinemas now) Slip (Roku Channel in the US, Binge on Australia) Beau Is Afraid (In cinemas now) Dan and Simon (that'd be co-host Simon Foster) also discuss the WGA strike - what do the writers want and how will the strike impact what we see?

My guests for this episode are the film-scoring duo Ryan Miller and Jay Lifton. Ryan is a founding member and the lead singer of Guster, who recently celebrated their 31st consecutive year of touring and recording. He has scored over 15 feature films and has worked with directors Colin Trevorrow, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Lake Bell, and Zoe Lister-Jones.  Jay Lifton is a Brooklyn-based composer who has worked with Alicia Silverstone, Kirsten Smith, Sean Baker, Paul Feig, and Errol Morris. He somewhat recently scored an episode of This American Life as well as the documentary RABBLE ROUSERS, which is about the forces behind NYC gentrification and urban displacement. Both Ryan and Jay have great resumes for their work in film and commercials. The pair teamed up to score Reese Witherspoon's film "Something from Tiffany's", which premiered this past holiday season on Prime Video. The film follows the story of a woman as her life gets upended when an engagement ring that was for someone else leads her to the person she's meant to be with. I watched the trailer and was struck by how beautiful it looked. Then, of course, I noticed the music. We talk about "Something from Tiffany's," Guster, their respective journies toward film scoring, the value of attending film festivals, music in video games, and more. Our guest today is a triple threat. Actress, filmmaker, and writer, Zoe Lister-Jones, who made headways in 2017 with her all-female crew directorial debut, Band-Aid. The decision was inspired to foster new creative experiences amidst the staggering inequity on sets.A couple who can't stop fighting embarks on a last-ditch effort to save their marriage: turning their fights into songs and starting a band.  The comedy-drama film, starring Zoe, Jesse Williams, and her New Girl co-star, Hannah Simone premiered at the 2017 Sundance Festival. Some of Zoe's most known acting roles include some of your favorite sitcoms like New Girl, Whitney, or Life In Pieces. I have watched Life in Pieces with my family many times and it remains a favorite. Zoe's love for performing and writing goes back to high school which set the foundation for a scholarship ride in NYU. Even though the film is what she's most known for now, Zoe has a background in music and theater. In 2009 she co-wrote and produced, her first screenplay, Breaking Upwards with Daryl Wein on a $ 15,000 budget. The film explores a young New York couple who, battling codependency, strategizes their own breakup. Operating on a thin budget like that turned the experience into a crash course or a production management Bootcamp in filmmaking for her and Daryl as described during our chat. A couple more production gigs later and she was ready for the director's chair. Last year, Zoe wrote, directed, and produced the sequel to The Craft (1996), a supernatural horror titled, The Craft: Legacy. A group of high school students forms a coven of witches.Wein and Zoe paired up again to bring a Sundance 2021 official selection cinematic experience to our isolated-covid-locked-down screens with what is described as a serene apocalyptic comedy, How It Ends. Liza (Zoe Lister-Jones) embarks on a hilarious journey through LA in hopes of making it to her last party before it all ends, running into an eclectic cast of characters along the way.It was chill and fun chatting about Zoe's indie filmmaking journey and navigating the minefields of live sets. Please enjoy my conversation with Zoe Lister-Jones.
