“Dogleg” is one of the best films of the year. A unique and hilarious feat of cinematic inventiveness, it follows amateur director Alan, played by Al Warren, after he loses his fiancé's dog at a gender reveal party on the day of an important shoot. Warren also wrote and directed the film, which took more than half a decade to finish. On this episode, he tells us why he was in no hurry to complete the film, and why he has taken a much more intentional and meaningful approach toward bringing it to the audience. He takes us back to his childhood, and a story of how prematurely promised stardom, followed by years of actively avoiding acting, led him to arrive at the craft in a genuinely meaningful and life-enriching way, which is where we find him now. Plus he shares his philosophy of comedy (which boils down to “Nothing is funnier than self-seriousness”), talks about his latest role opposite Nicolas Cage in “Dream Scenario,” and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

In this episode of the Curmudgeon Show, Derek Tam-Scott buys the world's only factory dogleg manual-transmission station wagon! This episode is all about the dogleg: the transmission layout that automatically makes any car cool. The discussion starts with the simplest question: What is a dogleg? Why does it exist — and why did it come about in the first place? The reason is, of course, racing — where the gears of the H pattern are used all the time, but first gear is only used once (to get moving.) The discussion then continues with every car ever produced with a dogleg manual — 3-speeds, 5-speeds, and 7-speeds. === The Curmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network Learn more about your ad choices. I had a great conversation with Anne Gannon. Anne is the principal of the Largo Group. I couldn't remember where I lived so I had to remember that I lived in Middlesex County but Union County had great golf courses. Sleepy Hollow County Club was the location of Anne's favorite golf memory. There were a lot of animal sounds during the recording of our conversation as Anne and her husband own a African Grey, which is a type of parrot. Anne offers many free resources and courses for entrepreneurs and business owners on her website, under what she has dubbed The Largo Group Academy.
This week's guest is Alex Stoitsiadis from Dogleg. The Detroit-based band has earned oodles of listener attention and critical acclaim with the release of Melee, their debut album that had the unfortunate distinction of coming out the same day the world essentially shut down. After 18-plus months of pandemic-related inaction, Dogleg is finally ready to get out there to play in belated support of that outstanding record. A few days after turning heads at the Pitchfork Music Festival and a few days prior to setting out on a lengthy U.S. fall tour (including a Sept. 24 stop at X-Ray Arcade!), Stoitsiadis spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the long road to the breakout record's release, the surprising response the album received and some exciting things that are on the horizon for Dogleg now that they can actually play live again. Of course, the conversation also turned to Stoitsiadis' musical past, including the role video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero had on his musical exposure, meeting his future bandmates at a School of Rock camp, drumming in a duo called Sleeping Pilots in high school, and his decision to start a solo endeavor the world now knows as Dogleg. Along the way, Stoitsiadis and Maas also talked about their shared love of the band Bear vs. Shark. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Dogleg ("Modern Language").
This week, Steve and Ian are getting ready for festival season. Pitchfork Festival is finally here, featuring sets from Dogleg, Oso Oso, and Bartees Strange and marking the tripling of the fest's notorious “token DIY/emo” acts. This year, festival season arrives in the fall, which leads into a question from a listener asking which albums are indicative of the changing of the leaves for our two hosts. This week's episode is centered around Minnesota trio Low, who has been regularly releasing music over the last 30 years or so. Recently, Low's consistent catalogue was starting to feel like they were tapering off, but their thirteenth studio album, Hey What, has them back in the saddle for their best collection of songs in recent memory. Perhaps this is the result of the prominence of the vocals on this album — where the voices were frequently buried amid the glitchy instrumentation on previous efforts, Hey What has the dual vocalists front and center, often cutting through the musical mayhem behind them.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging 2012, the new album from Pittsburgh band Brightside. Meanwhile, Steve wants to bring your attention to the forthcoming album from Irish post-punk band Silverbacks.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. We also recently launched a visualizer for our favorite Indiecast moments. Check those out here.
This interview brought another opportunity to not only chat with the band, but also bring in the record label as well. We sat down with Tyler Stodghill of Stars Hollow and Eric Smeal and Martin Hacker-Mullen of Acrobat Unstable. We got to take a look at both worlds of music. Tyler talked about the intense cycles of how he feels about music and diy in general. Plus, he is currently going for a masters in school counseling. Tyler would like to continue the band and put out music when he is in the mood, but is unsure about what extent it will be. Tyler is just enjoying the release of "I Want to Live My Life" which came out in May. There's plenty of merch and vinyl available. The album largely talks about mental health and the desire to be better in life. Then there's the record label side. We had a cool discussion about Dogleg. We hear stories about the beginning of Acrobat Unstable. Eric goes into how the label connected with Stars Hollow and how both sides agreed that the EP would be a trial run. Eric and Martin talk about what they look for in an artist. There's a fun discussion about the business side of the label and being able to do perks like putting a band in the studio. Lastly, there are some interesting takes on reputation of record labels in music. Check out Stars Hollow and Acrobat Unstable below! Today, we welcome Alex Stoitsiadis from Dogleg. They’re an amazing band and recently for the 7th annual Washed Up Emo Awards, which is only voted on by fans, won multiple awards and we found some time together to chat about the band and their history up to this point. If you’re not familiar with the band, they’re from Detroit, Michigan and released a record called “Melee” last year on Triple Crown. One of the best new bands out there right now, Dogleg and Alex’s words are worthy of your time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Approximately 25 years after it started, 2020 is finally coming to an end. As is customary in the music world, before one can look ahead, one must look back. Our latest episode is no exception, with Steven and Ian reflecting on a year of excellent releases in the indie world to choose their ultimate top five. Featuring efforts from The 1975, Bartees Strange, Dogleg, Bob Dylan, and more, Steven and Ian have each respectively crafted their list of 2020’s definitive records. If you're looking for more music that you might have missed this year, check out our full list of the year's best albums here and the indie-specific list here. As for new selections in this week’s Recommendation Corner, Ian has been spinning 'I Had Everybody Snowed,' the debut solo album from Taking Meds vocalist/guitarist Skylar Sarkis that has been a work in progress for nearly a decade. Steven, on the other hand, has been enjoying '2020,' the aptly titled latest effort from Magik Markers, their first in seven years.Subscribe to the newsletter for weekly music recommendations in your inbox and stream the official Topsify playlist.

Greg Epstein cut his teeth skiing the backcountry of Jackson Hole. Along with friends, he had explored every nook and cranny of Granite Canyon just outside resort boundaries in Grand Teton National Park.
