Guest: Larry Baer, CEO of the San Francisco GiantsIn 1992, Larry Baer was part of the ownership group that bought the San Francisco Giants and successfully prevented the team from being moved to Tampa, Florida. Back then, they had a big problem to solve: An old, uncomfortable ballpark that voters wanted to see replaced, but didn't want to pay for.20 years after the construction and financial success of Candlestick Park's replacement, Oracle Park, Baer — now the CEO of the Giants — embarked on an even bigger project, developing an entire neighborhood near Oracle called Mission Rock. “We're in the baseball business, but really, we're in the media, entertainment, sports, real estate business,” he says. 2nd baseman Ryne Sandberg is deservedly in the Hall of Fame. So is Roberto Alomar. On the other hand, Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker, and Jeff Kent are not, and it's unlikely that Robinson Cano will ever make it for off-the-field reasons. Chase Utley has a chance, and Jose Altuve is on track. We compared all of these players stats and careers and it's amazing how much alike their careers were or have been so far. Only 20 2B have ever been elected to the HOF. Gordon makes a great point that the historical HOF era committees should vote more regularly than every few years. Chase Utley did not play his entire career with the Phillies as he played four different seasons for the Dodgers. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Regular readers of this newsletter/podcast accompaniment knew last night that Pete Alonso didn't just reclaim the major league home run lead all by himself with his blast in San Francisco, he tied a Mets team record with his ninth dinger in 20 games to start the season.Dave Kingman got to nine homers in 18 games in 1976, while Neil Walker hit his ninth dinger of 2016, like Alonso, in game 20. In all three cases, the players appeared in each of the Mets' first 20 games.Walker stopped going deep so much after his blistering April for the defending National League champions that season. His 10th homer came in Denver on May 14, his 34th game of the season and the Mets' 36th. As for Kingman, his 10th homer of 1976 came in his and the team's 23rd game of the year, on May 4 to help Tom Seaver get a 5-3 victory over his future Reds teammates. And Kingman stayed hot, as his 14 homers in his first 30 games of 1976 (he played the first 39, for the record), still the most in Mets history, ahead of… also Kingman, with 12 in 1982. Yoenis Céspedes hit 11 in his first 30 games of both 2015 (after coming to the Mets) and 2016 (taking the team lead from Walker in the latter), while Mike Jacobs got to 11 in 30 in 2005 and Carlos Delgado in 2006.Alonso already has matched his own career-best start, which was nine homers in his first 30 games in 2019. The others he'll join in double figures with one dinger in the next 10 games? Frank Thomas (1962), Ron Swoboda (1965), Todd Hundley (1997), Benny Agbayani (1999), Mike Piazza (2001), Richard Hidalgo (post-trade 2004), Cliff Floyd (2005), Carlos Beltrán (2006), and John Buck (2013).And if you're wondering about Darryl Strawberry, his best start was nine homers in his first 30 games of 1988, matching Alonso's 2019, Jeff Kent (1994), Piazza (2000), Rod Barajas (2010), Walker, and Jay Bruce (2017). On this episode, we welcome Trevor Hildenberger, currently of the Sacramento RiverCats, formerly of the New York Mets, and forever one of the pioneers of Minor League Baseball players unionizing. We talked a lot about that last bit on the show, but not at all about the Mets, so let's give Trevor his due here as arguably the greatest strikeout artist in franchise history. If we're having an argument, we need to define some terms, and for the purposes of arguing that Trevor is the Mets' greatest strikeout artist, the most important term is that we are measuring this with strikeouts per nine innings. Since arriving in New York in 2019, Edwin Díaz has a 15.4 K/9 rate, just behind Josh Hader at 15.6 in all of Major League Baseball for pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched over the last four-plus seasons. As it happens, Díaz and Hader each have pitched 208.1 innings from 2019 through this writing — Hader has 362 punchouts, six more than Díaz.But does an artist really need a substantial body of work to prove their greatness? Or is greatness about what is achieved? There's only one Sex Pistols album, and they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (although they correctly refused to attend). So, what about the pitchers in Mets history with a higher strikeout rate than Díaz, but for whom the universe didn't see fit to log more innings in orange and blue?Hildenberger is, like Díaz, at 15.4 K/9 as a Met. Only, for Trevor that's rounding down from 15.43, while for Díaz it's roudning up from 15.38. Also at 15.43 is Kane Davis, who had 24 strikeouts over 14 innings in 16 appearances for the 2002 Mets. But in more than half of those appearances (9), Davis had either one strikeout or none at all. How can he then be in the conversation for greatest strikeout artist alongside someone (our pal Trevor) who struck out a pair of batters in each of his outings as a Met?There are four pitchers in Mets history with a higher K/9 than Hildenberger, one of whom is Bryce Montes de Oca. We all hoped to see him adding to his strikeout total this season, currently 6 in 3.1 IP (16.2 K/9), but he's now recovering from Tommy John surgery. So we can't really say what we've got there.Three more: Sam Clay, Bob Gibson, and Kenny Greer, each with two strikeouts in a lone inning of work as a Met.First of all, not that Bob Gibson (though he was a Mets pitching coach), but the one who pitched 97 games for the Brewers from 1983-86, plus the eighth inning of the Mets' 7-5 loss to the Astros at Shea Stadium on July 25, 1987. Gibson struck out Kevin Bass and the late Ken Caminiti (then a rookie) in his scoreless frame. You might remember Clay from August 20 of last year in Philadelphia, where he pitched the ninth inning of an 8-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader. Clay struck out Bryson Stott to start what wound up being his only inning as a Met, and should have had the game end on a two-out grounder by Matt Vierling, only Brett Baty made his first major league error. That extended the game, which Clay ended by striking out Kyle Schwarber.Greeer's game is the coolest, and he got the win for it. On September 29, 1993, the next-to-last home game for a dismal Mets team, an epic battle took place between Bobby Jones (the main one) of New York and Rheal Cormier of the St. Louis Cardinals. Neither allowed a run.Jones, in fact, pitched 10 shutout innings. Cormier went seven, followed by Paul Kilgus, Mike Perez, Lee Guetterman, Rob Murphy, and Les Lancaster. Relieving Jones were Jeff Innis for three innings, then Mauro Gozzo for another three… and then, to start the top of the 17th, a 26-year-old out of UMass whom the Mets had acquired 12 days earlier from the Yankees for Frank Tanana.Greer, in his major league debut, came one pitch from striking out the side. Erik Pappas lined to left on a 2-2 pitch leading off, then Greer got Geronimo Peña swinging and Lancaster looking. In the bottom of the 17th, Eddie Murray (previously 0-for-5) led off with a single and Jeff Kent (previously 0-for-6) doubled him home for a 1-0 Mets win.The problem with Greer's case as a strikeout artist is that one of his strikeouts was Lancaster, a pitcher who hit .098 in his career and struck out 64 times in 132 career at-bats. Greer's got one of the coolest stories for a one-game Mets career (he was on the 1995 Giants for eight games, as well), if not the coolest, but that's not what we're here for.Gibson striking out Bass and Caminiti is neat, but Bass really just had the one good year and Caminiti didn't get good until later. Clay had the strikeout equivalent of an unearned run.Hildenberger, on the other hand, got two strikeouts in a scoreless inning at Coors Field, plus one of his strikeouts in Chicago was Willson Contreras, not an All-Star that season, but in seasons both before and since among his three career nods to date. Also, Trevor came on our show. He's obviously the greatest. Duh.Oh, and this is the book Baseball Rules In Pictures that came off the shelf during the show. We will absolutely be digging into it more in the future. In 10 games, Pete Alonso has hit five home runs, the second time in his career that he's started a season that way, as in 2019, the then-rookie made an instant impact with not only the five dingers, but 10 other hits for a .385/.429/.923 start to his career. To start this season, Alonso's line is at .237/.326/.658. It's been a weird first couple of weeks. This isn't a record-setting start, although Alonso does have as many homers so far as the Guardians, Nationals, and Tigers. Dave Kingman had the most dingerrific start to a Mets season, with seven in the first 10 games in 1976 — he wound up with 37 (of the Mets' 102 total) home runs, finishing second in the National League to Mike Schmidt's 38. While the season total for Kingman was first eclipsed by Darryl Strawberry in 1987, and now is just outside the top 10 in Mets history, the 7-in-10 start remains alone at the top, according to Stathead. With six homers in the first 10 games of a season, we find Ray Knight in 1986 (finished with 11, plus one more in Game 7 of the World Series), John Buck in 2013 (finished with 15, all with the Mets before being traded with Marlon Byrd to the Pirates for Dilson Herrera and Vic Black), and Yoenis Céspedes in 2017 (finished with 17, played only 81 games). Also with five for a nice 90-homer pace after the season's opening 10 games? The aforementioned Strawberry on his way to breaking Kingman's team record in 1987, Gary Carter in 1988 (finished with 11), and Jeff Kent in 1994 (finished with 14 in 107 games before the strike). What's next for Alonso, the first Met ever to start two seasons with five dingers in 10 games? He's already tied for 36th on the team's list for homers in the first 20 games, and the record there, the one that all Mets fans will want to see fall in the next 10, is shared by Kingman's 1976 effort and the nine homers that Neil Walker hit to start 2016, on his way to going deep 23 times that year.Alonso is currently tied for 11th on that list with his seven homers to start 2019, while the list at eight is fascinating, too: Frank Thomas 1962 (finished with 34), Kingman in 1982 (a league-leading 37 that time), Kent in 1994 (14), Todd Hundley in 1994 (16) and 1996 (then team-record 41), Richard Hidalgo in 2004 (and here's where we note that this is in the player's first X number of games, not the team's, because Hidalgo joined the Mets in a June trade for Jeremy Griffiths and David Weathers, having already hit four homers for the Astros — he wound up wiht 21 in 86 games as a Met, still the record for most homers by a player with 145 or fewer games played with the club — Eduardo Escobar is currently at 21 homers in 145 games, and Byrd had 21 in 117, for what it's worth, while Mo Vaughn is next on whatever this list is at 29 in 166), Carlos Delgado in 2006, and Céspedes in 2016 (31). Bernie is broadcasting from Friendly's Sports Bar and Grill at 3971 Bayless Ave. in south St. Louis County. Bernie offers up his final thoughts on how the abolition of the shift shouldn't have a significant impact on Nolan Gorman given how the Cardinals shifted less than any other team last season. Bernie also says if there's a need to question Nolan Gorman's competency at second base, then he clearly is an inferior defender to Jeff Kent.
What didn't happen for the Giants this past offseason got the headlines, but the team still managed to make some moves that were a part of their master plan. Do they add up to a much better team than last season? Do the new players recreate the lost players in the aggregate? Do these moves and the way everything shook out help or hinder the team next offseason? And, what did Bryan and Doug learn from the Correa Imbroglio? Meanwhile, the pair look back on the Brian Sabean era, which included the most famous years of Jeff Kent and Brandon Belt, both headliners in their own right within the past month. Then, they share some big news about the future of the podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

They've run out of things to talk about yet somehow they're still talking. And drinking! Today Ben has made a Rum Firewalker while Matthew is drinking a 49er Margarita (inspired by the devil!). On the baseball side of things they rant about Hall of Fame voting (congrats Scott Rolen, sorry Jeff Kent), debate if the Giants are secretly good (Matthew) or secretly bad (Ben), and brainstorm ways the team could improve the fan experience (improved bathroom technology).Cocktails @ 9:27Baseball @ 16:30

Deep dive into a big congrats to Scott Rolen's Election. But what do we think about the other guys? Should Sheff have gotten in? Why does Todd Helton all-of-a-sudden look like he's in next year? Is what Beltran did worse than the Steroid guys? Speaking of them - it's looking ugly for Manny & Arod... and we are NOT happy about Jeff Kent falling off the ballot.

Rick Strickland is the Cubs AA hitting coach and the owner of Train Right Academy in St Louis. He has coached travel teams and was a former Yankee draft pick. When Rick Strickland broke his hand in his Junior year of college at Austin Peay, he was Top 10 in the nation in Batting Avg. and Stolen Bases. It was a blow missing the season, but like he tells his players when one door closes, another opens. He got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League with some amazing talent. “I played with great players and future Hall of Famers. Frank Thomas, Mo Vaugh, Tim Salmon, Jeff Kent, and Denny Neagle. Playing with top talent elevates your game and your mind” Rick came back and tore it up his Senior year leading the team to its first winning season in a decade and helping turn the program around. “The leadership, that's what really stays with me. What the team and I helped do for the program was immense.” Rick's standout play caught the attention of the Yankees, who drafted him. After spending time in their farm system, Rick brought his passion for player development and innovation to coaching. Rick is driven by improving players and helping them battle through challenges – mental and physical. “If you want to hit hard or throw hard, you have to train hard. You have to push your past what you think you can do to achieve more.” Baseball is a game of speed and power. What you do in the gym, will show on the field. His obsession with making improvements and player feedback took him down the technology path, where he has been a pioneer. He worked in early-stage development with Blast Motion, Rapsodo, Diamond Kinetics, and Uplift. A true student of the game, Rick grew up in Chicago as a two-way guy – a player AND a sports reporter. “Starting at 6 years old, I played constantly, but I also had to give my uncle complete recaps of the Cubs and White Sox games. I was his ESPN. What was the score? How did they get their runs? I had to tell him the story behind the game.” After years of playing, coaching, and “reporting,” Rick can readily spot the story behind each player's swing and throw. For him, and the CRTR staff, understanding how a player moves in training and practice is key to unlocking how they will perform on the field. Their collective job is to make players better. With over 375 college commits, 78 professional players, and 2 All-Stars in Andrew Benitendi and Jake Odorizzi, Coach Strickland's obsession with player development is the centerpiece of every training program. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message

Have a seat and settle in for yet another episode of locked out baseball podcast talk, this time, with a little more actual news than usual. Join Adam, Brian, and Noah, as they cover the Hall of Fame ballots, the possibility of MLB robo umps, and some upcoming prospects that each of us think are worth paying attention to. It's a shockingly informative episode considering what little news we actually have about the state of the lockout negotiations. It's also a great episode for hot take opinions and angry ranting about why certain undeniably legendary players are not in the Hall of Fame. Have a good listen, and let us know on Twitter or Instagram why you think Tim Lincecum should have been a first ballot hall of famer and what position you think San Francisco Giants' legend Jeff Kent played (hint, it's not what Brian thinks).

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the latest from around Major League Baseball. The MLB Players Association and MLB met in person in Manhattan on Monday and Tuesday, marking significant progress from the weeks of no substantive meetings between the two sides since the lockout began on Dec. 2. In its counterproposal to the league, the MLBPA held firm on its push for two-year arbitration eligibility, a substantially increased Competitive Balance Tax threshold, and cuts to revenue sharing. Notably, the league lowered its proposed cut from $100 million to $30 million in its latest offer. The players' side also proposed a substantial increase to the league minimum salary, to $775,000.Ben also discusses Kevin Gausman's tweet over the weekend, in which he declared that the San Francisco Giants never made him a contract offer this offseason. Gausman ultimately signed a five-year, $110 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Ben dives into why the Giants may not have made him an offer. It's plausible that Gausman's representation made it clear that their client was seeking to maximize total dollars, and that the Giants were more interested in a shorter-term deal with a higher average annual value. Finally, Ben discusses the Hall of Fame vote, which is set to be announced today. Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, and Tim Lincecum are the names to watch for Giants fans. The threshold to get in is 75% of the vote; last year, Bonds received 61.8%. This is Bonds' final year of eligibility. Kent has two more years counting this one, and his highest total was in the low-30s. This is Lincecum's first year on the ballot, and he is very unlikely to ever get in. But the number to watch is 5%: that's what Lincecum needs today in order to remain on the ballot next year.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

A surly individual who was blocked at multiple positions during his early MLB career, nobody can deny Kent is one of the best second basemen of his era. Despite not becoming a star until his early 30s due to trades and stints on bad teams, Kent was the perfect compliment to Barry Bonds' in the San Francisco Giants' lineups of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Kent finished his career with the most home runs of any second baseman ever and could very well be voted into the Hall of Fame one day. As of now, there will be no designated hitter added to the National League or expanded playoff format for the 2021 season. Jake and Jack discuss this news and share ideas for the future of the game, including expanding the league to 32 teams and updated stakes for the All-Star Game (36:25 - 46:40). The Hot Stove is heating up, with stars JT Realmuto and Marcus Semien signing contracts yesterday. Where might Marcell Ozuna wind up, and how will the Braves replace his bat (46:40 - END)?

After following the notoriously bad relationship between baseball icons Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent as well as the meteoric path of the Giants, Bay Area based sports writer Joan Ryan grew curious about team chemistry and how it affects performance. On today's podcast, Jim is joined by USA TODAY Sports reporter and Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) member Steve Gardner to breakdown down the resume of former MLB second baseman Jeff Kent. First, Steve talks to us about the process he plans to take this winter when he fills out his first official Hall of Fame ballot (1:43). Next, we dive into the likability of both Kent and his fellow San Francisco Giant teammate Barry Bonds (7:01), discuss how despite superior offense numbers to Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, no one in their right mind would ever say Kent was a better player (19:13), and why owning the record for most career home runs by a 2nd baseman doesn't make Kent a lock to get into Cooperstown (24:58). Finally, we discuss how advanced metrics are not Kent's friend (35:49), before making a final call on whether or not Kent deserves to gain entry to the Baseball Hall of Fame (44:43).

On this episode of Newsmakers, MLB.com's Bill Ladson chats with former MVP and five-time All-Star Jeff Kent to find out why he thinks he has not been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and if his perceived bad relationship with the media has anything to do with him not getting enough votes. Ladson also caught up with former Major Leaguer Dave Parker. Parker talks about not receiving the necessary amount of votes to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame, despite winning an MVP, two batting titles and two World championships.

On the latest episode of the Newsmakers podcast, MLB.com's Bill Ladson caught up with former Major League player Jeff Kent and sportswriter Bill Madden to discuss their relationship and favorite memories of the late, Dallas Green. Green was a professional pitcher, manager and executive in Major League Baseball. He passed away on March 22nd of this year
Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent kept out of Hall of Fame again OK, here's the main thing about numbers in baseball: They all require context. No one could reasonably argue that, say, Mariners first baseman Corey Hart is a more dominant offensive player than Hall of Famer Frank “Home Run” Baker simply because Hart has more career home runs and a higher OPS. We know Baker played in the sport's deadball era, so we adjust our standards accordingly. And Bonds stands as one of the sport's greatest hitters ever in any context. By the park- and league-adjusted stat OPS+, Bonds ranks third all-time behind only Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. It's perfectly fair to debate whether Bonds' 763 home runs are more impressive than Hank Aaron's 755, since Bonds played at a time when lots of guys hit lots of homers. But it's silly to dismiss all those homers entirely. They all contributed to his teams' chances of victory. 3. It would be unfair to clean players This one's tricky. One of the great shames of baseball's so-called steroids era is that there were certainly guys who held themselves to higher standards than the league did and refused to take PEDs, and many of those players likely missed out on roster spots or big paydays or places in the record books because they were unwilling to compromise. And that stinks, no doubt. Problem is, we have no sure way of knowing who they were. This aims by no means to besmirch the reputations of players like Glavine, Maddux and Thomas. But we can never say for sure that no member of the 2014 Hall of Fame class ever juiced. We know only that they successfully convinced us they played clean. And now that the Hall's doors are open to players from their era, it will become increasingly tricky and disturbing if we keep trying to guess which guys did what without concrete evidence. 4. How will I explain it to my kid?

Great Survivor episodes tend to result in great LF shows, and this was no exception. It is clear now that Jeff Kent became a very polarizing player. Many folks ended up despising him but there were also those that were surprised that they ended up liking him too. Several folks provided explanations for Penner's confusing vote for Abi. We are all thrilled with how the season is proceeding, and this episode ensured its place in Survivor history. It it great to have so many viable players working hard to win. For each episode, we provide 3 podcasts: an episode recap, an interview with the castoff, and a chance for Survivor fans like yourself to sound off on what you saw and how you think the castaways are fairing in the game. Twenty eight fans shared their thoughts on episode 8 and predictions for what we'll see next. We want to thank and acknowledge everyone who contributed to another great Listener Feedback show. This week we interviewed Jeff Kent. He left the game in episode 8 of Survivor Philippines. He dodged a bullet when Dawson failed to out him as a successful professional athlete, and that likely doubled his stay in the game. We were lead to believe his sole goal was to keep Penner from winning, but things are not always what they seem. According to him, he had already made more than $60M, so not winning Survivor, while frustrating, was probably not of much consequence to him in the long run. Listen to this interview to hear how Jeff really felt about Penner, his thoughts on Carter, find out who refused to work with him and lots more! The merge episode really delivered and prompted a lot of discussion. As a special bonus we were also treated to a couple of Survivor impressions with BrandonA channeling Russel Swan and Jody doing a version of RC's laugh that she thinks explains her early exit. Most of us were thoroughly confused by Jeff Kent's obsession with getting rid of Penner at this stage. Several folks suggested it was simply his overwhelming desire to gain control. Those of you playing JSFL have some tough choices to consider this week. This is the only chance you get to change your USB pick. From the preview this week, it looks like Penner is a cinch to win it all. You should take this opportunity to switch to him before the timer expires. Tandang made Survivor history and promptly sent one of their strongest members to become the first member of the jury. Coincidentally, the merge brings an end to Denise's losing streak. Perhaps the polarity of her curse has flipped. Penner appears to have really lost his sense of the game and appears doomed to go it alone in a non stop attempt to win all the immunity challenges between now and the finale. Do you think he can stands a chance? Will the evil Tandang trio remain in control of the game? Penner said Lisa was a potential under the radar threat to win. Do you think she really stands a chance? How did Skupin and Jeff Kent improve their long term prospects in the game by voting out RC? What did you think of the merged tribe name: Dang Rain, get it? This week we interviewed Dana Lambert and Sarah Dawson. They left the game in episode 5 of Survivor Philippines. At one point Dana appeared to be in control of the women's alliance on Kalabaw, but she ended up taking herself out of the game for medical reasons. Dawson was a kooky character that will likely be remembered for not using a valuable secret about Jeff Kent and for embracing and kissing Jeff Probst. Finally, the embarrassment that was Matsing is gone. It is too soon to call, but it appears that Malcolm made out far better than Denise. He now has an HII that only Denise knows about and ended up on the physically superior tribe. Kalabaw took a major hit this week, losing two castaways. Seeing Dana leave of her own accord after being sick for less than a day was surprising as was seeing Dawson leave without sharing Jeff Kent's secret. Do you think Kalabaw will be able to recover, or are they now doomed like Matsing? Will Malcolm be able to rescue RC? What did you think of Dana's decision to leave the game? Do you think Denise will ever get to be on a tribe that will win a challenge? Who do you think will be the next to be voted out? Here are the tribes after episode 5. You guys just can't get enough of the "cookie" talk. Here comes round two, this time with bonus recipe references! Several of you admit to, grudgingly becoming fans of Jeff Kent and Abi Maria. Many are worried for RC's future. Another key theme for this week is how strong the remaining cast appears to be. Lots of possibilities were proposed for what may happen next. Paul even envisioned a scenario that breaks up the only good thing left in Matsing which would be sure to disappoint most. Episode four may be a real nail bitter if some of these thought provoking predictions come true.
