Welcome to Episode 68 of Tablesetters! For nearly a decade, the Houston Astros have controlled the AL West—but the tides may be shifting. With key departures, an aging core, and resurgent rivals, could 2025 mark the end of their reign? We're breaking down the biggest storylines, offseason moves, and division outlook for every AL West team: ⚾ Astros – Losing Kyle Tucker, Justin Verlander, and Alex Bregman. Can Christian Walker's bat, Isaac Paredes & Yainer Díaz's emergence keep Houston on top? ⚾ Mariners – Elite pitching, shaky offense. Is Julio Rodríguez ready to lead them to their first division title since 2001? ⚾ Rangers – Injuries derailed their World Series title defense—but with a healthy Corey Seager & Wyatt Langford, are they primed for another deep run? ⚾ Athletics – Now officially Sacramento's team, they've locked up Brent Rooker & Lawrence Butler while adding Luis Severino & Jeffrey Springs—is this rebuild finally turning a corner? ⚾ Angels – It's Trout, Soler, and a whole lot of question marks. Are they making a last-ditch playoff push or delaying the inevitable rebuild? We'll also debate:
Vlad Sedler (@rotogut) joins DVR to discuss a few spring news items before digging into February's risers and fallers on draft boards as Wyatt Langford has cruised into the top-40, Junior Caminero has moved into the top-75, and Alex Bregman is making his way back toward the top-100 after landing with the Red Sox. Plus, they discuss a few of the rapidly rising closers whose job outlooks changed over the course of the past months, and a few fallers -- including the draft market's drop of Rays pitching as the Tampa Bay staff will have its home games at Steinbrenner Field in 2025.Rundown2:08 Spring News Updates: Andrew Benintendi, Zach Neto & Hyeseong Kim9:50 February's Rising Hitters: Buying Wyatt Langford in Round 3?25:07 Vlad's Trust in Matt McLain33:48 Isaac Paredes' Rebound Potential in Houston37:01 Relievers with Improved Job Outlooks42:28 Clay Holmes' Draft Stock is Rising46:25 Anticipating a Spencer Schwellenback Jump52:09 February ADP Fallers1:03:04 Most Overvalued/Overdraft Player(s) Currently in Top-75 OverallFollow DVR on Bluesky: @dvr.bsky.socialFollow Vlad on Bluesky: @rotogut.bsky.sociale-mail: ratesandbarrels@gmail.comJoin our Discord: https://discord.gg/FyBa9f3wFeSubscribe to The Athletic: theathletic.com/ratesandbarrelsHost: Derek VanRiperWith: Vlad SedlerProducer Brian SmithExecutive Producer: Derek VanRiper Hosted on Acast. With the exit of key pieces in Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, the Astros are adapting to potential lineup changes. The infield will feature new faces with the acquisition of first baseman Christian Walker and third baseman Isaac Paredes, in addition to second baseman Jose Altuve working in left field, but Jeremy Peña is expected to remain at shortstop. Last season, Peña recorded a .266 batting average and an OPS of .701. The Astros concluded their 2024 campaign with a disappointing loss to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Series, which ended a run of seven consecutive trips to the American League Championship Series. As the Astros enter a new era, what can Peña do to become a feared member of the lineup?

Fantasy Baseball Live – February 9, 2025 @ 3 PM ETSegment 1 – News and Notes1.The Mets re-upped with Pete Alonso on a two-year deal. The league has learned its lesson from hulking First Base sluggers like Alonso, and consequently, it's become more challenging for them to land the big contract.a.Your thoughts on the deal. Are there any changes at all in where you draft him2.Phew. Jack Flaherty managers give a sigh of relief when he re-upped with the Tigers for a two-year deal that is front-loaded with an opt-out. So, assuming he doesn't get hurt, he'll likely opt out. a.Will he be more of the 2024 version on the 2022-23 pitcher? 3.The Angels were at it again, signing Yoan Moncada to a one-year, $5 million contract. a.This is why I'm so critical of the Angels. This is a dumb deal to me. He hasn't been able to stay healthy, and if it weren't for a .406-fueled 2019 season, where he hit 25 home runs and batted.315, I'm not sure anybody would be thinking about him. Not to lead the witness, but what do you think? Am I all wet?4.Well the Tirso Ornelas came crashing down when the Padres signed the power-couple duo of Jason Heyward and Connor Joe. Oh well. Thoughts.Segment 2 – AL West1.Houston Astrosa.Isaac Paredes 2025 stat line: HR, RBI, and BAi.Will he be a downgrade from Alex Bregman, upgrade, or about the same?b.Chas McCormack (608.80 ADP), Jake Meyers (611.36), and Taylor Trammell (750.51) are the projected starting outfield. We've discussed previously about how weak it is. Do you have any interest?i.Over/Under Pedro Leon of 200 ABsc.Luis Garcia had TJS in 2023 and should be a full go this spring. In his last full season in 2022, he was pretty good. His ADP is 365. Is he a sneaky add in a draft?d.Spencer Arrighetti pitched to a 5.63 ERA in the first half and a 3.18 in the second. His batting average against went from .268 to .226. Any interest. His ADP is 216.9e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.Los Angeles Angelsa.True or False. Mike Trout will win a World Series with the Angels before his career ends.i.Stat line for Trout: AB, HR, SB, BAb.Jo Adell's ADP is 290.89 and he's going as the 71st outfielder off the board. He hits the ball extremely hard and sprint speed in the 86th percentile. There is going to be pressure on his batting average as he doesn't make great contact. However, if he gets playing time, isn't there 20-20 potential here?i.Will he get the playing time?c.Yoan Moncada stat line for 2025: AB, HR, and BAd.Nolan Schanuel – Over/Under 15 home runse. Is Kikuchi more like the Astros version in 2025 or more like the “every other” season for the Angels in 2025?i.We will look at where he's going in drafts.f.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)3.Athleticsa.Tyler Soderstrom was a top prospect for several years, but has yet to establish himself in the Majors. Will he this year or will Kurtz beat him to the punch?i.Nick Kurtz 2025 stat line: AB, HR, BAb.Lawrence Butler went 22 and 18 in 451 PAs last year. Over/Under 50 combined SB and HR for 2025?c.Who would you rather roster: Luis Severino (290.0) or Jeffrey Springs (239.3)?d.Will Mason Miller be on the Athletics on August 1?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)4.Seattle Marinersa. In one of our Dynasty League startups, I considered drafting Victor Robles but couldn't pull the trigger. I studied the data, and while he stole 34 bases last season, he's not a burner with sprint speeds in the 63rd percentile. A .370 BABIP drove his .307 batting average, and given his poor exit velocity, I don't see that sticking or much power. Am I too low on Robles? I don't get the hype, as he's going as the 49th OF off the board. b.One of our Patreon members reminded me that we don't talk enough about Seattle's poor hit park factors (T-Mobile). It's last in the league. Should this give you pause at the draft table for guys like J-Rod, Raleigh, and Arozarena?c.Will Julio Rodriguez be drafted in the first round in 2026?d.Do you think the Mariners should trade one of their big starters for some offense? If so, who would you suggest?i.An ideal trading partner would be the Orioles.e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)5.Texas Rangersa.Evan Carter state line for 2025: AB, HR, SB, and BAi. Will he be a full-time or platoon player by mid-season?b.Adolis Garcia had a down season in 2025. Although his speed has decreased, he still hits the ball extremely hard. Do you think he's more of a 30 to 35-home-run guy or a 25-home-run guy with pressure on his batting average?i.We will look at where he is being drafted and look at other players around himc.Do we see the break out of Wyatt Langford in 2025?i.He will be _______________ round pick in 2026.d.RosterResource lists Chris Martin as the closer in Texas. Are you buying that?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)

With the MLB hot stove heating up, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger visits the Jack Vita Show to break down the latest roster news, including Juan Soto's mammoth contract, the New York Yankees' attempt to replace Soto's production, and trades from both of Chicago's baseball teams. Rhett and Jack bring you analysis that you won't be able to find anywhere else! Major League Baseball is seeing a far more active offseason than it did a year ago, up to this point. On the Sunday night of the MLB Winter Meetings, Juan Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets. In response to Soto's record-setting deal, the Yankees made a flurry of moves, signing Max Fried and Paul Goldschmidt, and trading for Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams. Days before shipping Bellinger away to the Yankees, the Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, in exchange for pitcher Hayden Wesneski, third baseman Isaac Paredes, and third base prospect Cam Smith. Tucker has just one year remaining on his contract, entering 2025. Will the Cubs be able to extend or re-sign him? Or will he just be a one-year rental for the club? Do the Cubs have the pieces to contend in 2025? How does Tucker transform their lineup? On the other side of the city, the White Sox dealt Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for a haul of four prospects, which included 2023 and 2024 first round draft picks Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery. Rhett and Jack assess the trade package, and discuss what they think the White Sox will do next. Rhett and Jack touch on other offseason news from around the league, and Rhett analyzes the offseason that the Los Angeles Angels have had. Jack likes the Angels' addition of World Series champion and longtime Cub Kyle Hendricks. Later, Rhett and Jack share some thoughts heading into the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff. Rhett is about to enter his seventh season as MLB.com's Los Angeles Angels beat reporter. Prior to starting on the Angels beat, he covered the Minnesota Twins for the same publication for eight seasons. You can follow him on Twitter, @RhettBollinger.
Fantasy Baseball Live – December 22, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes – Trades and Signings1.The first basemen who are available are getting jobs.a.The Astros signed Christian Walker for 3 years and $60 million.i.The new-look Astros have Isaac Paredes at third and Walker at first. In the outfield, there is Jake Myers, Chas McCormack, and a yet-to-be-hired left fielder. How are you feeling if you're an Astros fan?ii.Do you think the Diamondbacks will go to battle with Pavin Smith at first base?1.The answer is no, as they acquired Josh Naylor from the Guardians for RHP Slade Cecconi and the 2nd round balance pick. Then the Guardians turn around and sign old favorite, Carlos Santanaa. What is the thinking here with the Guardians?b.Kyle Manzardo appears to be heading for DH duties. Is this good for fantasy manages long-term?c.Do you like this for the Diamondbacks?b.The Yankees appear to have signed Paul Goldschmidt, signing the 37-year-old to a one-year $12.5 million contract. He's a perfect fit for the Yankees as he's the right age. Is there anything left?i.Stat line for 2024 – HR, RBI, SB, and BAii.I love the fact that the Cardinals moved on here. They'll move Willson Contreras to first and give full-time at-bats to Ivan Herrera. I'm a fan of Herrera. What are your thoughts?2.The Yankees also acquired Cody Bellinger from the Cubs for RHP Cody Poteet. The Cubs will pay $5 million to offset the deal. This was a salary dump to eliminate some of the outfield depth the Cubs didn't need.a.Bellinger is a dead pull hitter with poor exit velocities and a ton of leverage. He should be better in Yankees stadium, but is it enough to interest you in Drafts? He is the 28th outfielder off the board and has increased since the trade. Are you interested? Will we look at the players going around him?b.Let's see what we think about the Yankees opening day lineup - RosterResource3.The Phillies sign Max Kepler to a one-year, $10 million contract. He's not the same player he was a few years ago, as the exit velocities are off, and last year, he rarely walked. You typically don't see the fall-off he had last season in his walk rate, so there could be some positive correction. However, with the bat speed down, players will get more anxious. His ADP is 639.51. Is there any value left? Maybe a flier in a Draft and Hold League?4.The Orioles sign Tomoyuki Sugano. Can you give us a scouting report?a.Let's look at the Orioles Opening Day rotation.5.Early this morning, the Phillies acquired Jesus Luzardo from the Marlins for…wait for it…more prospects. Returning is SS Starlyn Caba and OF Emaarion Boyda.Luzardo was injured a lot last season and only started 12 games for the Marlins. He was the big talk this time last year, but the Marlins held onto him. He has two more years of team control.b.Do you like this for the Phillies?c.Stat line for 2025 – GS, Ks, and ERASegment 2 – AL East Fantasy Questions – Ray and Blue Jays1.Tampa Bay Raysa.Junior Caminero's stat line for 2025: AB, HR, RBI and BAb.Josh Lowe was one of your guys last season, but only got 50 plate appearances against LHP. He's the 40th outfielder off the board. Any interest? We will look at other outfielders going where he is.c.Does Christopher Morel get full-time at-bats for the Rays? i.Over-under 25 home runs? ii.Over-under .220 batting average.d.McClanahan is 18 months removed from TJS, but remember, it's his second one. He's the 46 pitcher off the board or the 35th starter off the board. Is he worth the gamble as a high-end number three starter?i.McClanahan (46), Baz (67), Springs (95). Order these three in how you would draft them.e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.Toronto Blue Jaysa.I'm doing my Draft Targets for our Patreon members. I released first base over the weekend and wrote many glowing words about Vlad Jr., something I haven't done much over his career. I love the setup, though. He has enormous power, still young and in his walk year. What are your thoughts?i.If Soto signs for $600 to $700 and Vlad Jr. will be just 26 when he enters free agency, is he at least a $500 million player?b.Joey Loperfido stat line for 2025 – AB, HR, BA, and RBIi.BTW, Loperfido is two months younger than Vlad Jr. and his career is just getting started. Let that sink in…c.George Springer's career is winding down and he's now going as the 59th outfielder off the board. He hit 19 home runs and stole 16 bases last season. Any interest?d.Kevin Gausman is the 63rd pitcher off the board – a late number three, early four starter. He pitched to a 3.83 ERA, but the strikeouts were down.i.Are you interested in Gausman next season.ii.I've looked at his baseballsavant page and will do a breakdown of him. There are warning signs. e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)3.Who wins the AL East and how many teams advance to the playoffs?Close

Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs got the deal done! Three-time All-Star Kyle Tucker is heading to the Northside! Initial thoughts are coming from the fellas on an emergency edition of the CHGO Cubs Podcast!
The Cubs are trying to trade for Astros star Kyle Tucker and Tom Loxas joins the podcast as the guys try to figure out why Seiya would need to be in that deal. And, if the Cubs aren't hell bent on keeping Tucker beyond 2025, does it even make the Cubs better if they trade Seiya to the Astros and Cody Bellinger to anywhere? They also discuss why this is exactly the kind of move the Cubs need to make, what prospects might be involved and how Houston has had the hots for Isaac Paredes for a while. They also wonder if the Bears awful performance in San Francisco puts Ryan Poles' job in jeopardy and includes clues on who the new head coach might end up being. All that and more.
The Cubs have pulled off a blockbuster trade. Friday afternoon, the team acquired 2022 World Series champion and 3-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros for infielder Isaac Paredes, right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski and infield prospect Cam Smith. The Cubs Weekly Podcast broke down the seismic trade in an emergency edition of the podcast.Tony Andracki and Andy Martínez share their thoughts on the trade and what it means for the Cubs. The pair discuss why the Cubs felt the need to pull the trigger now and why — although it's a heavy price — the Cubs can withstand that kind of deal. Later in the podcast, the duo discusses the ripple effects of the deal and what it means for other players on the roster, like Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger.
