Today on the show we have director, writer, comedian, and actor Jay Chandrasekhar has contributed to and appeared in a wide variety of critically acclaimed television programs and films throughout his career.Chandrasekhar assembled the sketch comedy troupe Broken Lizard, which includes Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. Together they performed comedy across the nation until they set their sights on producing television and feature films.Under his Broken Lizard banner, Jay directed and co-wrote Fox Searchlight Picture's comedy cult classics Super Troopers, Super Troopers 2, Club Dread, and Warner Bros' Beerfest. He also directed the Broken Lizard comedy special, Broken Lizard Stands Up.Super Troopers hit theaters in February 2002 and went on to gross $23 million with glowing audience reviews (and $80 million on home video.)Jay continued on to direct The Dukes of Hazard, direct and star in Millennium Entertainment's The Babymakers, and appear in DreamWorks' comedy hit, I Love You, Man. Recently, Chandrasekhar published his book, Mustache Shenanigans: Making Super Troopers and Other Adventures in Comedy that gives a behind the scenes look at the making of Super Troopers. In addition to his feature film work, Chandrasekhar has directed various TV shows, including several episodes of the Emmy Award winning series Arrested Development, Community, Chuck, The Grinder, Up All Night, Happy Endings, New Girl, and Psych. More recently, Jay has also directed episodes of Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Speechless, and Schooled. His new film is Easter Sunday.Stand-up comedy sensation Jo Koy (Jo Koy: In His Elements, Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot) stars as a man returning home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to his Filipino-American community. Easter Sunday features an all-star comedic cast that includes Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley series), Tia Carrere (True Lies, Wayne's World films), Brandon Wardell (Curb Your Enthusiasm series), Tony nominee Eva Noblezada (Broadway's Hadestown), Lydia Gaston (Broadway's The King and I), Asif Ali (WandaVision), Rodney To (Parks and Recreation series), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place series), Jay Chandrasekhar (I Love You, Man), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire). Easter Sunday, from DreamWorks Pictures, is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), from a script by Ken Cheng (series Wilfred, Betas). The film is produced by Rideback's Dan Lin (The Lego Movie franchise, It franchise) and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin, The Two Popes), and is executive produced by Jo Koy, Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Cheng, Joe Meloche, Nick Reynolds and Seth William Meier. The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures domestically. Amblin Partners and Universal will share international distribution rights.Jay also just launched a new app designed to give the power of reviews back to the people. It's call Vouch Vault."When my film, Super Troopers, showed at Sundance, it played to big laughing crowds. But when it was released to the public, the reviews were only so-so. On Rotten Tomatoes, Super Troopers, got a 38%-fresh aggregate score from less than a hundred reviewers. With the public, though, the film garnered a 90% fresh rating from more than 250,000 non-reviewers. This 38% reviewer-number stuck in my craw. I remember thinking, “Who are these reviewers, these strangers with outsized power, and why are we listening to them? Seriously. When's the last time you walked up to a stranger and said, “Hey, what movie should I see?”Our goal with Vouch Vault is to take recommendation power from anonymous strangers and give it to the people whose tastes you know and trust."

Happy Wine Wednesday, y'all! It's our final episode on She-Hulk - for now - and it's bittersweet. This show has been such a fun time and I will really miss it. However, I can't think of a better way to close out our coverage than being joined by Candi and new guest to the pod - Andre! As always, we kick off our discussion by touching on the ongoing themes of the season and the exploration of them in the finale and the season as a whole. First, we talk about the "big bads" of the season and the revelation of Todd as the Hulk King. We also revisit the return of Titania and whether or not we wanted to see Josh again after his devastating betrayal. Next up - cameos! We talk about the chaotic Royal Rumble-like fight when everyone crashes the party like a series of Kool-Aid men. And we give our closing thoughts on Emil's role throughout this season - we definitely had mixed feelings about that. Much to our delight, Jessica Gao was not done with her exploration of toxic masculinity. We discuss how that's explored in the finale and our thoughts about the writers addressing this issue over the course of Season 1. We wouldn't leave you without our thoughts on our favorite "at law" moments. Following that, we talk about the general use of the secondary characters in Jennifer's world - we would've been really happy with more Nikki, Pug, and Mallory - here's hoping that they will have more involvement in the future. The episode closes with our wishlist for Season 2 and Andre survives his very first thirst segment by sharing his hopes for Jennifer's romantic prospects going forward. We have a brief spoiler segment after our sign off in which I ask Andre and Candi to weigh in on Bruce arriving in the finale with a son. Thank you so much for joining us for this coverage - I hope you've had as much fun as we have. I love you for listening. Welcome to the first episode of a mini-season of pop culture goodness! Today Anita, Kat, and returning special guest Annalee Newitz are talking about She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the most recent of the MCU's forays into television series. Created by Jessica Gao and starring Tatiana Maslany, the show brings to the screen a character introduced to comics in 1980: lawyer Jennifer Walters. After an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner, she transforms, developing Hulk-like superpowers similar to his. Listen in as we discuss the critical, as well as the social, reception of the series, along with our own thoughts on what unique takes and perspectives She-Hulk adds to the bulk of film and television comic book adaptations.CW: She-Hulk contains depictions of online harassment, violence, and sexual assault, so please listen to our conversation with caution.Time Stamps:52:30 - What's your Freq Out?Kat on the FreeVee series High SchoolAnita on the 2011 film Weekend directed by Andrew HaighAnnalee on the AMC series Interview with the Vampire (2022)Links Mentioned:eff.orgAnita's new show on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/thattimewhenFind Annalee:https://twitter.com/annaleenwebsite: https://www.techsploitation.compodcast: https://www.ouropinionsarecorrect.com/Find Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramtwitch.tv/femfreq
Happy Wine Wednesday! Our coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues this week with a discussion about episodes 7 and 8. As always, we start with recurring themes across the first season and how they are explored in these episode. This includes our thoughts on Emil's role this season, the use of cameos generally, Easter Eggs, and our favorite "at-law" moments. We also revisit our thoughts about Luke's fashion design talents in this episode after seeing She-Hulk's official uniform for the first time and her gala dress. Perhaps Luke isn't a nemesis after all?We had SO many thoughts about the Daredevil cameo. We loved every second of it and we are fully invested in Matt/Jenn or Daredevil/She-Hulk - we're here for all of it. Jessica Gao and her talented staff of writers are not relenting in their exploration of toxic masculinity and we share our appreciation for that.As always, we get thirsty with some fun prompts inspired by these episodes. We share with whom from the MCU we would like to have an adversaries to lovers experience like Matt and Jennifer. We enjoyed Matt's walk of shame and share our choices among other MCU characters we wouldn't mind see doing a shoe-less walk of shame from Jennifer's apartment. Our thirsty thoughts conclude with giving Jennifer some well deserved agency and choosing the MCU character with whom we would like to see her consensually create a sex tape. Josh is the worst!Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a really good time!I love you for listening! Find and follow Candi on Twitter here. Stage and screen actor Trevor Salter joins us on the show to talk about his good-guy-gone-bad role in Marvel's She Hulk where he plays Josh, a dashing groomsman who seemingly falls for the series star Jennifer Walters but turns out to be part of Intelligencia. Trevor talks about his secretive and vague audition process for the role, his experience working with show creator Jessica Gao and series star Tatiana Maslany, and why actors should learn auditioning as a separate skill and not assume it's the same process and technique as acting. Seriously. When's the last time you walked up to a stranger and said, “Hey, what movie should I see?”Our goal with Vouch Vault is to take recommendation power from anonymous strangers and give it to the people whose tastes you know and trust."Enjoy my conversation with Jay Chandrasekhar.

Now wait a minute. Once again we have what the industry calls a "get" on the show this week. We're so excited to get to our guest that (Bryan) is (almost) willing to put aside his raging jealousy that Ronna's going to the Emmys this year, so let's get to it. Joining us in The Carriage House is none other than writer, producer, and creator of Marvel's SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW on Disney Plus Jessica Gao! Jessica joins us to give advice on dealing with a family member's socially unaware girlfriend, a problematic new grandparent, and some friendship drama revolving around a baby shower. August's AR Social Club Kiki is on Wednesday 8/31, and it's going to be one for the books. A White Party (get those linens pressed!) celebrating this month's drink selection: a trio of impeccable rosés. But remember, if you're not already a member you only have until 11:59pm ET Thursday 9/1 to join the AR Social Club for the month of September! arsocialclub.com

Andrew talks to guest co-host Jessica Gao about creating the new hit Marvel show She-Hulk: Attorney at Law! They discuss trolling the trolls and white people making weird comments at restaurants. Later, they answer listener questions about a company "showing off diversity" and texting employees. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Larry is joined by Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Jessica Gao to talk about her new Disney+ series 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law'. They begin their conversation by talking about how they became friends, why she wanted to develop a show around She-Hulk, and her personal connection to the character. Next, Jessica details her journey from comic book fan to comic book TV and movie writer via her experiences working at a comic book store at a young age and the subsequent opportunities that presented themselves after contributing to a writing fellowship at Nickelodeon.(11:08) This leads to a discussion about the importance of identifying career "indicators" that reveal the value of your work and consistently learning your craft. (27:45) Jessica then describes her struggles with avoiding being pigeonholed as a Chinese-American women in a white male-dominated Hollywood machine and maintain representation in her projects and throughout the industry.(32:54) After the break, Larry and Jessica break down the challenges of putting together a Marvel show and praise the incredible work of the 'She-Hulk' cast, particularly lead actress Tatiana Maslany.(37:07) They end the pod by looking forward to the rest of the show's first season and Jessica shares some very amusing anecdotes about her parents.(54:22) Host: Larry Wilmore Guest: Jessica Gao Producer: Chris Sutton Learn more about your ad choices. Tatiana Maslany is the Emmy-winning actress who is perhaps best known for her work as numerous clones in the excellent sci-fi series Orphan Black - but now, it's safe to say - her portrayal of Disney+'s latest Marvel hero She-Hulk (aka Jennifer Walters) will propel her to even higher heights. Joining her on this She-Hulk Screen Time interview special are her director, Kat Coiro, and the writer-creator behind it all, Jessica Gao, one of whom happens to have written one of the best Ricky & Morty episodes ever. Which one, you wonder? Well... here's a hint: it's the one who's a writer.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is the latest MCU show to hit Disney+, and introduces us to Bruce Banner's cousin, Jennifer Walters, a high-flying lawyer who also happens to be a Hulk. The show launches on August 18 on Disney+, and in this episode Chris Hewitt (who is crazy about the show) sits down across Zoom for chats with Jessica Gao, the show's head writer/creator; Kat Coiro, the show's lead director; and the brilliant Tatiana Maslany, who plays both Jen and She-Hulk. Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler special but a preview of the show, but some mild spoilers for the first episode lurk within, so it's your call if you want to listen now, or wait until episode one has aired. Either way, the interviews are fun dives into the show, which feels fresh and different and unlike anything we've seen in the MCU, and the character (ditto), and we hope you enjoy.
