For better or worse, Timothy Simons will probably always be best known for the first TV role he ever booked: the cravenly odious political climber Jonah Ryan on HBO's ‘Veep.' He could have been typecast as a lanky creep forever, but in the years since that show ended, Simons has managed to have a surprisingly varied acting career, most notably with his role as rom-com sidekick Sasha in this fall's Netflix hit ‘Nobody Wants This.' In this episode, Simons talks about finding the nuance in what could have been a one-note character and reacts to the controversy around the show's depiction of its Jewish female characters. He also looks back on what it what like to begin his career opposite a comedy legend like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and reveals the disturbing similarities between Jonah Ryan and America's next vice president, JD Vance. The VP and her team go into recovery mode, trying to take the spotlight off Selina by visiting the sick and injured at a local hospital. Peter talks about how there were a lot of rehearsals despite the show relying heavily on improvisation - the cast had to quickly get used to trying out things on set that ultimately didn’t make the cut. Timothy Simons grew up in Readfield and attended University of Maine in Orono, where he discovered his love of acting. He then worked in the Chicago theater scene before moving to Los Angeles. In just a few years, he landed his breakout role on HBO’s “Veep,” starring as the lovingly hated Jonah Ryan alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale. Now, Simons has amassed nearly two dozen film and television credits, including the limited series “Looking for Alaska” on Hulu, “The Hustle” opposite Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway and voicing characters for “Robot Chicken,” “Big Hero 6: The Series” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” He is currently developing his own comedy for HBO, about a man who runs an assisted suicide business.
What it's like to interview at Stanford University (!). What Veep's Jonah Ryan can teach aspiring Washington technocrats. On Trumpian fascism. Why elite think tanks are ripe for corruption. And what Larry David's "spite store" idea has to do with Trump's lame-duck foreign policy. This week we meet Timothy Simons, the actor who played Jonah Ryan: the White House liaison to Vice President Meyer’s office on HBO’s Veep. He swung by the Pop Life bar to talk about working in a video store, auditioning for a part he didn’t think he was right for and the creative insults directed at Jonah on the show. Then, Phillip Norman on Mick Jagger. He is a biographer who specializes in writing big, thick books on rock and roll artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly and Elton John. As the Rolling Stones continue their No Filter US Tour, I’ve gone into the vault to find an interview I did with Norman just after he wrote the definitive book on Mick Jagger
Veep is a show full of despised, incompetent and unlikable characters. And is there anyone less likable, more incompetent than Jonah Ryan? Played by Timothy Simons, the tall, petty and mercurial Jonah went from a lowly white house staffer to New Hampshire's least popular members of Congress to long-shot presidential contender. Simons explains why thick skin doesn't always protect you from all of Veep's famously devastating insults. Plus, how being a dad has impacted his acting career and knowledge of elementary school handball.
The man who brought Jonah Ryan to life discusses the end of the HBO satire. First, Kristen and Darren take a look at the Starz gentrification drama and Renee Zellweger’s soapy new Netflix series.
The actor talks about his portrayal of Jonah Ryan on the Emmy-winning HBO comedy; Critics Daniel D'Addario and Caroline Framke discuss "Game of Thrones"; Variety's TV team recaps the upfronts.
Timothy Simons sits down to talk about the last season of "Veep" and the arc of the memorable if not head-scratching Jonah Ryan. Host Mina Wahab (@MinaMakesMagic) breaks down episode 4 “South Carolina.” She does a quick character breakdown of Selina Meyer, Tom James, Jonah Ryan, and Mike McClintock. Plus, she includes two quotes in our latest “What Trumps Veep” special segment! ABOUT VEEP: Veep is an American political satire comedy television series, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, set in the office of Selina Meyer, a fictional Vice President, and subsequent President, of the United States. The series was created by Armando Iannucci, who created the British political comedy series The Thick of It, and also wrote and directed that series' film spin-off In the Loop (2009), all of which feature the same writing staff. Veep has received critical acclaim and won several major awards. It has been nominated four years in a row for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, winning the award for its fourth season. Its second season won the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Comedy Series, and its third season won the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Louis-Dreyfus has won four consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards, one Screen Actors Guild Award, two Critics' Choice Television Awards and one Television Critics Association Award for her performance. This week on the No Film School Podcast, we’re going to talk about one of the most largely undiscussed nuances of filmmaking: the portrayal of masturbation on film. Specifically, of the female kind. 'Yes, God, Yes' is a film unlike any you’ve seen before. In it, a Catholic teenager in the early aughts discovers masturbating and struggles to suppress her new urges on a religious retreat. But this ain’t no American Pie satire. Writer/Director Karen Maine (who you may know as half of the writing team from 2014’s indie hit 'Obvious Child') truly brings us inside the mind of female adolescence. Much of this ability is due to the fact that she lived through this experience as a teen herself. As I learned when I sat down with Maine and her cast at SXSW earlier this month, however, it was the director’s openness to collaborate with her talented young leads that truly sealed the deal. The cast is led by a standout performance from Natalia Dyer, who shows she clearly deserves more complex roles than the likes of 'Stranger Things'’ archetypal Nancy Wheeler provides her. Dyer joins us on the show today, along with Timothy Simons (perhaps best known for his role as Jonah Ryan from 'Veep'), and talented new comers Francesca Reale, Alisha Boe and Wolfgang Novogratz. We talk about building an atmosphere on set comfortable enough to to avoid the pitfalls of the typical coming of age story and masturbation, lots of masturbation.
Timothy Simons is nothing like his character on “Veep”—well, except for the generous use of profanity. Growing up a class clown in rural Maine, Tim worked in theater and commercials before cracking up TV audiences as Jonah Ryan, one of the lovably horrible politicians on HBO’s Emmy-winning comedy created by Armando Iannucci and starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The valuable career advice he shares in this interview includes everything from red carpet posing to how to cope with a devastating, lifelong addiction to acting. -- For over 50 years, Backstage has been the most trusted place for actors to find jobs and career advice, and for casting professionals to find the right performers for their projects. “In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast” features interviews with some of the most exciting actors and storytellers working today. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, we mark the imminent return of Veep for its seventh and final season with a conversation between two of the show's cast members, Timothy Simons and Brian Huskey. Simons and Huskey – who play manchild Jonah Ryan and pesky political reporter Leon West, respectively – have a hilarious and wide-ranging talk that takes in everything from the perils (and occasional positives) of social media and getting sincere in middle age, to shilling for free stuff on podcasts and, of course, their show's swan song season. Plus, we see how long their pledge to not talk about Trump actually lasts and find out exactly what happened when Tim went to a Tony Robbins-designed Pitbull show at a celebrity golf tournament! A long time ago, in a podcast far far away.... Episode 2, George Takes the Wheel. The greedy Trade Federation has stopped all haircuts in all the films of 2005, making this the Year Without the Haircut for jedis, wizards, and elves alike. Over 20,000 Jedi Blood Bacteria have threatened to leave the podcast under the leadership of Anakin Skywalker and Jonah Ryan's 2020 presidential bid. There are heros on both sides somehow inexplicably. Jedi Blood Magic has swept into the Republic in search of the Three Eyed Emo, Anakin Skywalker, who has taken time away from his presidential campaign to finish his degree from the DanRad School of Acting. While the congress endlessly debates this distressing turn of events, all of the women leave the galaxy with their OBGYNs, leaving Natalie Portman alone with nothing but George Lucas and a bad trip to the beach. Kirstie and George Lucas both have burning questions which were only resolved when George Ask Jeeved. Star Wars Produce are returning to the set to cast their final vote on just how stupid George Lucas really thinks the American public has been at various points in film and food history. Matt Walsh and Timothy Simons play Mike McLintock and Jonah Ryan, respectively, on HBO's Veep. They tell us about the experience of starring in a show about a dysfunctional government in the middle of a crazy election year, and working in a new location with a new showrunner for Season 5.
