November 2024 rolls on in the world of TV Movie Night, as we take a look at made-for-tv movies set in Washington D.C. This week, Andrew and Mark take in a heartstring puller in "A Child's Wish." "Veep's" Anna Chlumsky struggles with a devastating sickness, all while her family struggles with the crushing gears of the American healthcare system. But, it's set in 1993, so that's all ancient history compared to the enlightened year of 2024! Also, Bill Clinton makes a guest appearance (in the movie. Not the podcast. He told us he swore off listening to us after Mark's controversial take on "The Amazing, Cosmic Awareness of Duffy Moon")! ABOUT TV MOVIE NIGHT: TV Movie Night is a podcast featuring TV what-have-yous Andrew Krukowski and Mark Gonzales diving into the retro world of made-for-tv movies. Each episode spotlights one of these forgotten "classics" (and sometimes without the scare-quotes classics), enjoying cinema on the small screen an episode at a time. Past episodes include landmark films like "The Day After," lost gems like "The Night of the Scarecrow," and odder fare like "Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus." Talk about a downer of a movie.  We all know the ending but this movie is so much more than that.  This coming of age film explores the trials and tribulations of a girl named Vada (Anna Chlumsky) who has to grow up pretty much on her own.  Flanked by her good friend Thomas J (Macaulay Culkin).  She tries to navigate pre-pubescence while being stuck in her Dad's (Dan Aykroyd) funeral parlor. In Season 3 of the podcast, my good friend Kate Hagen - a talented writer & Senior Vice President at The Black List - joined me to kick off a fascinating new series of conversations with the people behind the movies we love. We launched it with what is still one of my all-time favorite episodes: a long, career-spanning discussion with the great filmmaker Allison Anders & then a few months later, we reunited to chat with Allison's daughter, the hard-working & acclaimed music supervisor Tiffany Anders. And recently, Kate returned to help me welcome two extraordinary guests, actors & producers Griffin Dunne & Amy Robison, who, along with their company Double Play Productions, were behind some of the best movies when we were growing up, including director Joan Micklin Silver's CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER, director John Sayles' BABY IT'S YOU, Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS (which also starred Dunne), Sidney Lumet's RUNNING ON EMPTY, & more. An actor I think most people in my generation first remember as the teacher upon whom Anna Chlumsky's character had an impossible crush in MY GIRL, Griffin Dunne has had an impressive career on both sides of the camera, acting in films as diverse as AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON & QUIZ SHOW, & directing films such as PRACTICAL MAGIC & the wonderful Joan Didion documentary THE CENTER WILL NOT HOLD. Amy Robinson made a stunning debut as an actress in director Martin Scorsese's MEAN STREETS, in which she played Teresa. And in addition to the films she's produced with Dunne, Robinson has also produced director Joan Chen's AUTUMN IN NEW YORK, the Hughes brothers' FROM HELL, Michael Cuesta's 12 & HOLDING, Nora Ephron's JULIE & JULIA among others. In this feature-length episode, the warm & thoughtful duo behind Double Play Productions take us on a tour of their memories making some of the most acclaimed films from the late '70s through the early '90s & beyond. Timed to release this week as AFTER HOURS debuts on disc from The Criterion Collection (a few months after CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER did as well), film buffs, & especially those interested in the business of making movies are sure to enjoy this endearing conversation. Note: SAG strike rules prevent actors from discussing or promoting any projects they made under past contracts. This conversation was recorded prior to the strike in May of 2023. While it doesn't actually feature any theys slashing thems like the title might have you believe, this conversion camp horror movie is well worth a watch. We're not saying it's good exactly — that's for you to judge — but there is definitely a lot going on here. For one, there's Kevin Bacon, a CLEAR REFERENCE to Friday the 13th. There's also a Jason Voorhees name drop followed by a pivotal pride month moment. Macauley Culkin may've got $1 million and a majority of movie poster real estate, but the "Girl" in this early 90's dramedy is Anna Chlumsky. Chlumsky plays Vada Sultenfuss, a hypochondriacal lass who lives in a funeral parlor with her dad and grandmother. The film was an adorable smash, helped by a post-Home Alone "Mac." But now, decades later, is "cute" enough to cut it for our middle-aged podcast hosts? Do senile grandmothers and bee-stung kids blend well with mortuary humor? And why or why does Vada run so oddly? The Old Roommates pop on some age-inappropriate makeup and discuss the 1991 favorite. Listen to this. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Darwin Del Fabro, Brazilian actor and musician talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the new horror film “They/Them” (pronounced “They Slash Them”) he's featured in. The slasher film is written and directed by John Logan and produced by Blumhouse Productions. “They/Them” had its world premier at the Outfest film festival in Los Angeles last month and will have its streaming premier on Peacock beginning August 5th. “They/Them” is a queer empowerment story set at a controversial LGBTQ conversion camp and stars Kevin Bacon as Owen Whistler the camp director, Carrie Preston as Dr. Cora Whistler Owen's wife, Anna Chlumsky as nurse Molly and joined by seven campers played by Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Anna Lore, Monique Kim, Darwin, Cooper Koch and Austin Crute. The campers come from all different backgrounds. Kim (Anna Lore) and Stu (Cooper Koch) come from affluent families and are reluctant to address their sexual orientations. Then there's Quei Tann's Alexandra who faces being disowned by her family unless she successfully completes the camp's regiment and Toby (Austin Crute) who negotiated a free trip in trade for his stay as camper Veronica (Monique Kim) attempts to work through her bisexuality while Gabriel (Del Fabro) wants to feel accepted after being bullied for so long. As the camp's methods become increasingly more unsettling the campers must work together to protect themselves especially when an axe murderer begins covertly claiming victims and they must figure out if perhaps this butchering culprit could be one of them. We talked to Darwin about what he hopes “They/Them” will accomplish and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Darwin Del Fabro is a proud queer Brazilian actor and musician. In Rio de Janeiro Darwin was featured in the original Brazilian productions of “Shrek The Musical”, “Fiddler On The Roof”, “The Wizard Of Oz” and appeared in the hit Brazilian soap opera "Ligações Perigosas" (based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses) and “Novo Mundo.” Darwin has recorded three albums including the cast recording of the Irving Berlin revue "Be Careful, It's My Heart", "Darwin Del Fabro in Rio” and the recently released “Darwin Del Fabro: Revisiting Jobim.” Currently he is working as a producer on another film with writer/director John Logan and very excited about his personal and professional journey that brought him to this moment with the network premier of “They/Them” now streaming on Peacock.    For More Info… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

The Hustlers at Scores came out in New York Magazine in December 2015 and became so notorious, Pressler was nominated for a National Magazine Award and the rights to the story were sold to Will Farrell's production company. The original article talks about the world of Scores, the treatment of women who work there, the abuse by customers who work on Wall Street, and how they were able to steal so much money for a long period of time without getting caught. The movie, Hustlers, was treated as an independent film with a small budget and a 29-day shoot in New York City starring Jennifer Lopez and lead hustler Ramona, Constance Wu as newbie Destiny, and Julia Stiles as “Elizabeth, the journalist.” Starting with its premiere at the Toronto Film Festical in September 2019 it was a (mostly) critical hit and made $157 million worldwide at the box office. Lopex does her own dancing and stunts and she has never been more beautiful. (Many people were bummed when she did not receive an Oscar nomination for her fur-draped performance.) The soundtrack features some amazing women artists including Fiona Apple, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Lorde. Does it glamorize stealing? (Does anyone blame movies with men as thieves and villains harshly?) Pressler would go on to further fame with her next article about NYC con artist Anna Sorokin which was turned into a Shonda Rhimes production on Netflix--Inventing Anna.
