Send us a textThis is the famous Vice Presidential Debate. It would feature a fiery set of exchanges between Vice President Dan Quayle and Senator Al Gore. The two men served in the Senate together and knew each other quite well. The gloves will come off and as that happens the third man on the stage , retired Admiral James Stockdale, was often reduced to being a bystander. It was a shining moment for Dan Quayle, who in my opinion, won this debate against Al Gore. It was the strongest moment for Quayle in either campaign. Al Gore does well too and if you follow the adage "do no harm," Gore was successful. It is also a campaign debate that shows why a novice can be truly handicapped by their lack of experience in politics. Admiral James Stockdale was a brilliant man, a former educator, and President of a University, a war Hero, a POW, and a formidable man. But you would never have known it based on the performance you will hear in this debate. Kamala Harris is the American High Speed Rail candidate.Very expensive. Popular with liberal city dwellers. But ultimately a lot of hype that leads to very little. While she isn't necessarily a poor candidate in every context, she struggled twice on the national stage with median voters first within and then outside of her party. I'm not going to do a blow by blow of her campaign because this is a eulogy and eulogies are broad. So let's start here:Kamala Harris is from California. Not a bygone version of California. Not Ronald Regan's California. Not Roger Rabbit's California. The California over the last two decades. One that saw the rise of San Francisco as a financial and cultural hub AND post-pandemic has become synonymous with progressive failure. That California. If you are a California politician the first decision you need to make when explaining yourself to the nation is: does California suck right now or not?If you say it sucks, then you explain how your beloved home state has fallen victim to the plight of the modern world. Blame capitalism, blame a lack of morals, decry the spread of drugs… if you want to get spicy, blame local or state government. Or you can decide California is great actually, blame the media for spreading a distorted image. Kamala Harris did neither. The only time she mentioned California was in her backstory. Oakland was a prop. But for Presidential candidates, your past is your governing philsophy. And I don't mean the bullet points she'd recite, (did you know she prosecuted trans-national gangs?) I mean your leadership. Are you a head cracker? Are you a unifier? Are you a turnaround artist? Are you a technocrat? With Kamala, we got a little bit of everything. Which means we got nothing. And I'll give credit to her campaign staff, who I didn't think did a great job, because I don't know that they had much to work with.Kamala Harris lacks dynamism and appeals to a limited audience. She is a highly-touted college quarterback who underperforms in the pros. Based on their initial promise they get a second shot on another team only to be terrible there too. Why do we think the third time is the charm? She emerged from her tenure as San Francisco Attorney General as a let's-enforce-the-laws liberal and was lauded for it. By the time she became California AG she had liberal wins to notch including legalizing gay marriage. Her election to Senate from the one-party state while impressive for her resume is not indicative of someone with political skill or campaign savvy. Her early wins say more about her than anything that came after because California was on the ascendancy after that. The nation was begining to agree with positions California had taken in the last century: specifically on marijuana and LGBT freedoms. The tide rose and her boat with it. But to be clear: she's a system product. An assembly line politico. Sleek and shiny but quite possibly purposeless. We saw this when she leaned into progressive messaging while running for president in 2020, it backfired. Some blamed this on her embracing "woke" politics or poor advisers, but the real issue was deeper: she's never had to dig deep and find a compelling version of herself before. She certainly didn't find it in 2019.True authenticity emerges when voters believe in a politician's core identity—even if they disagree with their views. They sense an underlying worldview driving the candidate forward. Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump all possessed this quality. Harris notably lacked it, exemplifying a broader Democratic Party tendency to believe messaging alone can solve fundamental problems. No amount of messaging could separate Harris from her identity as a politician from America's most progressive state. And she can't explain it as a stregth or distance herself from it as a weakness. She's not a poor speaker— just uninspiring. Unlike George W. Bush, who wasn't particularly dynamic but clearly stood for something, Harris never conveyed a sense of deep conviction.Without conviction, you can't win. You need to spark something in swing voters or motivate your likely supporters to actually turn out. Without that spark, you have nothing. This is all compounded by the fact that she was dealt a tough hand. This is the second visit the Campaign Undetarker has made to the Democratic Party this cycle. President Joe Biden drops out before the convention, admitting to America that they'd reject him and the job he'd done as president. And in the late summer, Kamala faced a tricky choice. How do you handle Joe? She decided not to. Okay, allow me one bit of back seat driving for the campaign. In my opinion, her only viable path forward would have been resigning the Vice Presidency. She could have done this gracefully—simply stating she wanted to pursue her own vision of government. Would it have left the Biden Administration scandalized? Yes. But that's happening anyway. Why tie yourself to the mast of a sinking ship when you have a chance to win the presidency? This would have distinguished her from the administration without directly criticizing him. Now when she dodged she could always point to her sacrifice which would speak louder than any second guessing. The fact that this option wasn't seriously considered reveals how Democrats misread the situation. They treated her like an interchangeable part, failing to recognize that when crafting a multi-year national narrative, you can't take voters for granted. The audience isn't dumb. Shape the story how you want, they're not slow. You need to be alive. You need to be vital.Only bold moves could have saved her. Instead, we got a rehash of post-Obama Democratic presidential campaigns: celebrity endorsements, polished interviews, and rigid talking points. Not a speck of humanity in sight. When you're trailing by 30 points, you need to get aggressive. You need to try every strategy possible. If you're not willing to think creatively, what's the point? But this isn't simply a eulogy. No, this is a prelude. In politics, what is dead may never die. I believe Kamala Harris is the next governor of California and I think she might be popular. California might be the only state that would realistically think of Kamala as a centrist. She will have the political clout to do otherwise unpopular things that will be quality of life improvements to the citizens. She could go back to the style that suits her the best: Kamala the Law and Order Liberal. To use a football analogy. Mac Jones was a good quarterback in college at Alabama but has been mediocre on two NFL teams. But what if he could go back to college? There is every reason to believe he'd be awesome.Same for Governor Harris. But if she decides to run for president again? I'll be saying the same thing I said in 2019. The same thing I'm saying now. If she runs for president a third time, her ambitions will…REST IN PEACEChapters* (00:00:50) Introduction: Setting the Stage for 2025 Politics* (00:01:17) Kamala Harris's Presidential Eulogy* (00:13:23) PAX MAGA: Republican Dominance in the 2024 Election* (00:18:03) Biden's Legacy and Party Dynamics* (00:26:03) Reflections on Election Predictions* (00:40:01) Closing Thoughts: The Path Ahead This is a public episode. Hey EYV fam, this wasn't the conversation I hoped we'd be having after the 2024 election. Instead of looking ahead to progressive change, we're unpacking what went wrong—and where we found moments of hope. Despite the results of the presidential election, there were historic wins for women of color, progressive ballot measures, and a brighter path in certain states. But we can't ignore the challenges ahead, especially for marginalized communities. In this episode, I reflect on: - Historic Wins: The first two Black women elected to the U.S. Senate, pro-choice Democratic victories, and groundbreaking firsts like Sarah McBride, the first openly trans member of Congress. - Ballot Measures: From protecting abortion rights to climate policies, there were wins that matter deeply. - The Big Picture: Why Vice President Harris' loss was driven by factors like misogynoir, misinformation, and economic dissatisfaction—and how they reflect larger systemic issues. - What's Next:How communities of color, women, and allies can come together to survive and advocate in the face of upcoming challenges. This episode isn't just about the election—it's about survival, community, and figuring out where we go from here. I'm asking YOU, my listeners, to share your thoughts: - What resources or topics can I cover to help you navigate these times? - Who do you want to hear from on the show? Email me your thoughts at EmbraceYourVoicePod@gmail.com Subscribe to the listserv at EmbracingYourVoicePod.com to get updates and resources.Take care of yourselves. Rest, reflect, and connect with your community. We're not just rebuilding democracy—we're ensuring our collective survival. Let's find ways to support and sustain each other. Mentioned in This Episode: - Season 2, Episode 9: Why Kamala Harris Could and Should Be President - Articles I've written on misogynoir and Harris' treatment as Vice President (links in the show notes) Until next time, EYV fam. ❤️ Here are articles I've written on research on how women of color are treated as candidates and/or elected officials:Navigating Double Standards for Women of Color Candidateshttps://www.genderontheballot.org/navigating-double-standards-for-women-of-color-candidates/Double Standards, Vice Presidency, and Kamala Harrishttps://www.genderontheballot.org/double-standards-the-vice-presidency-kamala-harris/Black Women's Political Leadership: The Barriershttps://www.genderontheballot.org/black-womens-political-leadership-part-2/When The Run: The Challenges Women of Color Face in Politischttps://www.genderontheballot.org/when-they-run-the-challenges-facing-women-of-color-in-politics/

An absolutely abysmal jobs report comes out just a few days before the election. The Biden-Harris administration created an embarrassing 12,000 jobs in October when economists predicted 110,000. Mark Halperin and Dan Turrentine, my colleagues from The Morning Meeting, join me today to discuss all things election. When it comes to the Vice Presidential candidates, JD Vance has shined in his media appearances. From town halls to legacy networks and longform conversations like Joe Rogan, JD Vance has run laps around both Harris and Walz. Conversely, Tim Walz has to explain his sorted past and the blatant lies that have emerged about his background. Mark and Dan give insight into both parties' futures and what the playing field will look like after this election. What Democratic candidates will rise up for 2028? Will JD Vance be the new face of the Republican party? I take us through the battleground states as Mark and Dan give their thoughts who will win each state and what time we should expect to know the final outcome. Then, Senator JD Vance joins me to share his message to undecided voters. We discuss the kind of Vice Presidency he is looking forward to accomplish and the roles he wishes to tackle in office. After traveling the country, Senator Vance has grown to know the American people like never before and the optimistic spirit we share as a country. Senator Vance talks about his relationship with Donald Trump and shares why he is the better candidate than Kamala Harris. The stakes for debates are pretty low when the Vice Presidency is the office in question, but J.D. Vance seems to have said better sounding words than Tim Walz, according to most reactions. Putting in a word for Walz—or at least a warning against Vance—is our guest Democratic strategist and analyst Jess McIntosh, who is here to assess the Vice Presidential debate. Plus, a dock strike could jeopardize goods across America. Turns out, dockworkers earn on average more than $150k a year at the East Coast's biggest port, and they also hold most of the cards in this negotiation. 48 years ago in October, a the first vice presidential candidate from Minnesota took the national stage for a debate. That was Walter Mondale, a 48-year-old U.S. senator from Minnesota, running alongside newcomer Jimmy Carter, the former governor of Georgia.Mondale's 1976 debate against Republican VP nominee Bob Dole was the first time two vice presidential candidates met up for a live, televised debate. It was a fiery political moment. President Richard Nixon had resigned just two years earlier over the Watergate scandal. And Americans were disillusioned by the war in Vietnam. Part of Mondale and Dole's exchange left a mark on the rest of Bob Dole's career: Mondale called him a “hatchet man” and the name stuck.Mondale and running mate Jimmy Carter went on to defeat incumbent Gerald Ford in the presidential election that November.

With a sitting VP running for President for the first time since Al Gore's failed bid for the White House in 2000, there's been a lot of talk about the role the VP plays in government, the impact a VP pick has on a Presidential campaign, and just how much Kamala Harris' record as VP/relationship to President Joe Biden can show us about her own agenda, should she win the White House. So today we begin a three-episode run focused on the Vice Presidency and those who have held the office with a conversation on Lyndon B. Johnson. Lyndon B. Johnson's Presidency is bookended by the tragedies of JFK's assassination and the escalation of the Vietnam war, but his career in politics and the policies he championed transcend his time in the Oval Office. In this episode, two of the foremost experts on LBJ, Mark Updegrove and Mark A. Lawrence, join Bob & Ben to discuss Johnson's life and legacy. Mark Updegrove is the President & CEO of the LBJ Foundation in Austin, TX, the presidential historian for ABC News, and the author of multiple books on Presidential History, including Indomitable Will: LBJ in the Presidency. Dr. Mark Atwood Lawrence is Director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum and Associate Professor of History at UT-Austin. He is the author of multiple books on US history including The Vietnam War: A Concise International History. This is a rebroadcast of RTN #256, which originally aired on December 12, 2022. When a presidential candidate chooses a running mate, it can make or break their entire campaign. And unlike normal election cycles, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris had only two weeks to vet and choose a running mate.On Tuesday she announced that she chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Joel Goldstein has dedicated much of his career to studying the role that U.S. vice presidents have in the country. He's a professor at St. Louis University school of Law and he joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about how Walz could make his mark.
[This is the podcast version of an already posted story]It's too late for me. I followed the feminist lie through most of my life, only to wake up much too late to have lived it a better way. You see, it takes a while to realize that it really is about the warm body next to you. It is about the laughing children and grandchildren. It is about the stories, the recipes, the memories, the picnics, the vacations. No, life is never going to be perfect. There will be problems with every family, unforgettable tragedies, broken hearts, and dreams deferred. And there are sometimes mothers who become addicted to drugs. Not everyone grows up easy. Some of us barely make it out alive. As I watched The Machine surround JD Vance like a pack of hyenas going in for the kill, I was disgusted on so many levels. I am sure if the Right had that kind of power, they'd probably abuse it, too. People are people, and power corrupts. But still, the level of depravity was shocking, even for them. The absence of empathy in a culture defined by trauma is what defines the new Left. Their trauma. Someone else's trauma. Trauma from our past. Every kid growing up on the Left will be fed one psych med or another. When Donald Trump was shot, there was just a moment where there was a pause. Wait, they all seemed to think, are we supposed to feel something?Yes, you are supposed to feel something. It's called humanity. Empathy. I have been cursed with too much empathy. I get a double dose from each of my parents. My dad loved his cat Freddy so much he couldn't bear to get him “fixed,” so he let him out to produce untold amounts of wild kittens. One day, Freddy was hit by a car, and my dad never really recovered. He loved that cat. My mom had so much empathy that for a while there, she couldn't bear to see her chickens sitting on unfertilized eggs, so she went to the pet store and bought fertilized eggs so they could hatch. But she kept producing too many roosters and didn't know what to do with them, so she moved the roosters to another property she owned. I joked with her that it was like a male prison. Please, send over some hens. And me, well, I can barely clip the leaves off of a basil plant without feeling bad about it. I save spiders. One video of an abused dog will ruin my entire year. It's a curse—too much empathy. But that's what I feel when I think about JD Vance, what he's gone through in life, and how he's come out of it such a fine young man with a beautiful family and a promising future. It reminds me of that wonderful scene in The Shawshank Redemption, written by Stephen King before he became Trump deranged, and back when Hollywood could still make great movies. JD Vance said something, so what? You can't grow up with a foul-mouthed Mamaw and not fire off a zinger now and again. I grew up with that kind of mother, a mouth so foul she'd make a sailor blush. I often remember her screaming at cars that drove by, “You mother f*cking c*cksucker!” That's probably why I can't shut up. And probably why JD can't either. But that's not why he's my hero. That's a different story entirely. It has to do with growing up like a weed. You don't really belong any place. You grow up strong anyway because something in your DNA makes you a survivor. No hothouse flower was he, nor carefully tended garden plant, but a fast-growing, persistent, ever-present weed. I grew up not that differently than he did—the kind of family where the men leave, and the women go a little crazy. At least there were no drug addicts, but I know what it is to long for normalcy so bad it aches. I know what it is to visit “normal” families and feel envious that there were two parents, that they sat down and ate dinner, and there was lunch money.I know what it is to keep going, no matter what ghosts chase you. I know what it is to be underestimated by everyone, but never let anyone stop you. I never fought in the Iraq war like he did. I couldn't last one day of training to be a Marine. And I'm pretty sure I couldn't become a Senator like he did, much less a candidate for the Vice Presidency. But I know what it is to try at life anyway. JD Vance is my hero because everything he's done so far in life has not killed his faith in himself, his family, his mother, and his country. I would say in his God, but I don't know if he is religious, and I would feel like a phony if I said it that way. I'm not quite there yet. I guess I just mean this life can take you down. If you can somehow survive it, it's a miracle.Donald Trump said JD Vance cares about family to explain away why he is adamant about supporting mothers with kids. You'd have to grow up the way he did and the way I did to understand why someone would be so protective of the family unit. He did not have it growing up, but it was something he longed for. I know that because I felt the same way.If the worst thing he ever did was generalize about “Childless cat ladies,” that's not that big of an offense. The second part of it was specifically about politicians who have less of a stake in the future. Yes, it will probably alienate some voters, but honestly, is that really how you go about voting? Something someone said turns you off so you'll vote for the totalitarians?Maybe Trump could have picked someone who would pull in a swing state, as the Democrats do. He could have picked “a woman.” But I'm glad he picked a survivor, a tough Marine who can take whatever they have to throw at him. We know that because he's already survived the worst of it. We hope.I don't know what will happen in this crazy election. It's the totalitarians vs. the populists. But anyone who blames JD Vance for Trump's loss, should he lose, is a fool. Trump and Vance aren't running against other candidates. They're running against an entire system. Don't kid yourselves. They will attack and destroy anyone who threatens their power. So here's to you, JD. Thanks for fighting the good fight.END// This is a public episode. I spent the past 6 days in Washington D.C. running for the Vice Presidency of the United States of America. I just wanted to type that sentence out because it's so hilarious. I debated Vivek Ramaswamy and opened for Donald J. Trump and then LOST. And yet, this was the coolest week of my life. You won't believe how this all went down. The vice presidency of the United States is not an easy job. As its first occupant, John Adams reportedly said, "I am nothing, but I may be everything." Another vice president, John Nance Garner, was even more blunt, saying the office was "not worth a bucket of warm spit" (and that's the clean version of what he said). Even worse, the Constitution doesn't give the vice president much to do. So why does America even have a vice president? The truth might surprise you. In this episode, legal scholar Roy E. Brownell II explains the long, bizarre odyssey of America's vice presidents. Happy Monday! Sam is back from vacation! He and Emma speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, to discuss his recent book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's imminent invasion of Rafah (in the wake of weeks of bombing), Israeli officials' fears of ICC arrest warrants, the absurd debate over university student activism and whether silencing free speech is the true free speech, Mike Johnson's speakership, presidential polling, the UAW, and Kristi Noam's screwing of the pooch, before parsing deeper through the insane response from University administrators at Columbia, Emory, and Ohio State, threatening their students with eviction, violence, and more in the face of protests. Ari Berman then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma touch on his history reporting on voting rights with MR, and how “Minority Rule” serves as a culmination of his reporting on modern-day efforts at the GOP's undemocratic takeover and how they play into an ever-shifting battle between democracy and elite rule. Stepping back, Berman looks to America's inception and the central role the US Constitution played in bolstering the US' constraints on popular rule, with institutions like the Senate, Supreme Court, and Electoral College all serving to act as checks to the people's power of democracy and federalism. Moving forward, Abe walks Sam and Emma through some of the major periods of democratic progress and (largely racist) backlash in US history, including reconstruction's shift towards a multi-racial democracy and the following minoritarian overthrow in the South that established Jim Crow rule, and the major progress made under the Civil Rights Movement – which saw a variety of voting-right legislation passed over the 1970s – and the GOP's reaction that we're still dealing with today. Parsing deeper into this latter era, Berman looks at the role played by folks like Pat Buchanan in pushing the GOP back toward their project of minoritarian rule, establishing the blueprint of the GOP's takeover of the undemocratic institutions of US politics and the establishment of a network of think tanks and foundations to shape the generations to come. After an extensive conversation on how the politics (and normalization) of Pat Buchanan paved the way for a Donald Trump presidency, grounded in culture war and white resentment, and how the GOP's takeover of Wisconsin politics at the outset of the 2010s provided an easy laboratory for anti-democratic policy, Berman wraps up the interview with a plea for the Democratic Party to recognize and strategize against these institutional threats to US democracy, and how refusing to do so paves the way for the likes of Donald Trump. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Kristi Noam's big swing at the Vice Presidency – and the bodies she left in her wake – watch JD Vance continue to represent his cuckstituency, and bask in Hasan's evisceration of a British genocide apologist. Morning Joe has flashbacks to his pro-Vietnam War days, Atrios tackles the hypocrisy of the “look what you made me do,” response to protestors, and Dave Rubin doesn't see the issue in his criticism of marginalized groups' support for Palestine. Bill Barr explains why the socialist agenda of climate change and education standards is a much bigger threat to Democracy than the GOP's attempt to undermine voting rights and elections, and Charlie Kirk's failures not not get pwnd by “children” continue, plus, your calls and IMs! Tulsi Gabbard's recent take downs of the Democrat Party sounds well and good. But what is she really up too? This is a woman who ran for President as a Democrat, she has pushed for "assault weapons" bans, universal basic income, Medicare for all, free college tuition and abortion with very few limits. Tulsi Gabbard even supported a federal $15 minimum wage. This is not a woman we want anywhere near President Trump of the Office of the Vice Presidency. Tulsi Gabbard is a Trojan Horse. She may be an unwitting Trojan Horse, but still a Trojan Horse at that. I will show you proof, from recent interviews, that she has not changed her position on important issues like gun rights. Just because Tulsi doesn't support endless wars or endless funding of Ukraine, does not make her a Conservative. Fox has embraced her, that should tell you all you need to know. This podcast is for anyone who thinks Tulsi Gabbard would make a great running mate for Donald J. Trump. She would not!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Scot Bertram discusses news and headlines
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, to discuss the oral arguments that took place at the Supreme Court last week for Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on DeSantis putting a dunce hat on his dunce hat, Netanyahu healthily surviving a no-confidence vote, the growing death toll in Gaza, the US' “totally not a war” in Yemen, Donald Trump's widening lead over Nikki Haley, auto union organizing, House tax policy, and Mike Johnson's speakership, before reflecting on DeSantis' evolution from Trump fanatic, to Trump heretic, to Trump cuck. Elie Mystal then dives right into the history of SCOTUS' Chevron Doctrine, with the right championing in the 1980s as Reagan attempted to use his cabinet to cripple the relatively nascent administrative state, and the unanimous decision by the Court to delegate the reading of administrative law to the experts in the agencies, rather than allowing for themselves and lower court judges to dictate the meaning of all legislation. After briefly running through this decision's relationship to the budding institution of the modern administrative state, and why – despite the conservative origin of the case – it is hugely important for the functioning of government and democracy as a whole, Mystal tackles the massive role the Chevron Doctrine has played since it was established in 1984, deciding some 17,000 cases, and the complete legal chaos that would be caused by overturning it. Elie and Emma also touch on the asymmetrical nature of this fight – with the difficulty of governance further inflamed by the ease of obstruction – and parse through the various ideological stances of the conservative Supreme Court justices that are likely to decide this case, before wrapping up with the future of the fight for the administrative state, why it might lie (unfortunately) in Congress. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Tim Scott campaign in the streets and the sheets for the Vice Presidency, parse through the continuing evolution of Israel's genocide in Gaza, and the Biden Administration's refusal to acknowledge the rhetoric coming out of the Israeli government. Michigan voters parse through their major issues with Biden ahead of 2024, Jeffrey from Memphis discusses voting in his first election, and Sam from Portland dives into his city's housing crisis. Donald Trump basks in DeSantis' failure, the MR Crew discusses the harrowing impact of the US' growing abortion bans, Tim Pool blows his chance with Trump Jr., and Sarah from Newton explores the ongoing Newton teachers' strike. Jeff from Iowa inspires a long conversation on the electoral college and the politics of voting, plus, your calls and IMs! Yesterday's news was a firehydrant, and most of it pretty alarming. The corrupt husk we're pretending is president with more evidence of selling out the country for financial gain surfacing, leading right to his literal front door. A radical New York judge goes after Trump yet again on the valuation of his properties and businesses. Mark Weaver, former DOJ spokesman and constitutional attorney unpacks the legal madness. Then Dinesh D'Souza returns to discuss his new film Police State and shares his thoughts on tonights' Republican debate among other news stories of the day. -For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
