Inspired by a 2013 StarWars.com article by JW Rinzler, we're talking about how George Lucas' thoughts on the Force and just who can use it and why have and have not changed, why Sabine's journey in Ahsoka honors that why people should just relax about the whole microscopic life forms thing. The lads are in a nostalgic mood this month with a look back at Celebration Europe 3, which was 5 years ago this month. Panels, exhibits, costumes, celebs, swag and socials are all reminisced. Some great new acquisitions are discussed, from the team and elsewhere, and there's a feisty Action Figure Face-Off - can anyone beat The Fett? In Rebel Briefings the team discusses the sale of the podcast's spiritual home the Star Wars Forum U.K., celebrates the launch of the Variant Villain website, notes the sad deterioration in the health of Star Wars author JW Rinzler, and looks forward to the first big U.K. collecting event post-Covid, Echo Live. For the Licensee section the boys take a trip to the land down under, and look at the Toltoys releases in Australia and New Zealand, making some surprising discoveries along the way. This month's main interview guest is our very own Richard Hutchinson who unbelievably up til now has never had a feature interview. The lads discuss flat caps, whippets, R5-D4, Celebrations, the Expanded Universe and how not to get beaten up in the frozen North. All this with the regular banter and bluster, look out for the podcast in the normal places.

Next, Jason cracks open The Omnibus (42:23) to explore the life and work of visionary director Akira Kurosawa and his prominent influence on the Star Wars universe. In The Hive Mind (1:00:34), Jason, Cody, and writer Alicia Lutes question whether Star Wars needs cinema when it has such good serialized storytelling in Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, and more. Last week the family of J.W. Rinzler announced he had lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on July 28th at the age of 58. In a tribute to him on the StarWars.com website, George Lucas said the following. "With his kind and contemplative nature, you could see a glint in his eye, the wheels turning when he had a new idea and a quiet fervor with which he sought out ever more detail for the books he wrote and edited. The works he left behind are touchstones to times and places we can each remember and appreciate in our own way.” I'm rereleasing the episode I recorded with him and Juhi Khemani last summer today in his memory. I want to send my condolences to his family, who request that remembrances to him be made by donating to the Pancreatic Cancer Network. I know his memory and his work will live on for a long, long time to come.

Hey everyone, just thought we'd put together a little something as a tribute to the incredible author of so many of our favorite Star Wars non fiction books and friend of the show, the late Jonathan Rinzler. He was always so kind and supportive of us, even when we teased him and the weird sounds his cat made. Jonathan passed away at the age of 58 on July 28th, 2021 but his pioneering work, his giving spirit and warm support to Star Wars fans will live on forever. Here you'll find a message he recorded for us for one of our holiday special episodes and the audio from his talk with us in August 2018 in episode 137 where we talked to him about the early drafts of Return of the Jedi. Thank you again Jonathan. for without you we would have nothing to talk about.

Hello to all you Chimps, gorillas, orangutans and even you damn dirty Humanoids! Welcome back to Talking Apes! On this episode we feature an interview with author J.W. Rinzler about his NEW book, The Making of the Planet of the Apes. This has been a huge year for classic Planet of the Apes. In February the Ape community kicked off the 50th Anniversary with screenings and lots of new merchandise including graphic novels and books. One such book is the long-awaited, The Making of Planet of the Apes, by author JW Rinzler which is set for release 10/23 by Harper Collins. With a foreword by Fraser Heston, Charlton Heston's son, The Making of Planet of the Apes is an entertaining, informative experience that will transport readers back to the strange alternate Earth ruled by apes, and bring to life memorable characters such as Cornelius, Dr. Zira, Dr. Zaius, and Taylor, whose time-traveling sparks an incredible adventure. Meticulously researched and designed to capture the look and atmosphere of the film, The Making of Planet of the Apes is also packed with a wealth of concept paintings, storyboards, and never-before-seen imagery—including rare journal pages and sketches from Charlton Heston's private collection—as well as color and black-and-white unit photography, posters, and more unique ephemera. Comprehensive in scope, The Making of Planet of the Apes is the definitive look at the original blockbuster film, a must-have for fans, film buffs, and collectors alike. And yes, there is a Felix Silla/Gary Dubin discussion included in our conversation with JW Rinzler. Now Go Ape!

Following on a previous REQUIRED READING that we did a year ago (go to episode 37.3 for that, https://soundcloud.com/wagesofcinema/making-of-star-wars), we now look at the making of EPISODE 5 in the Star Wars series, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. How did George Lucas do it? Should he have given himself a screenwriting credit (or given Leigh Brackett, may she rest in peace)? How did Irvin Kershner, Gary Kurtz, Lawrence Kasdan and Frank Oz make things so amazing? Who is Phil Tippett? Why should you care? Most of all - how the hell did this become harder to do than the first Star Wars? Listen here to find out details we discovered from this fabulous book by JW Rinzler. wagesofcinema@gmail.com (clips from the BBC special "The Risk Business" from 1980 are featured)

Needless to say a discussion of the making of George Lucas' STAR WARS (episode 4 a New Hope of course) and the book (a return of our REQUIRED READING segment) written meticulously by JW RINZLER goes into a tangent at one point about Alejandro Jodorowsky's DUNE.
