“Travel does not require leaving your city or state or country, but it does require leaving your comfort zone. And that can happen a block or two away from where you live.” –Chloe Cooper Jones In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Chloe talk about why a section about “slum tourism” was cut out of Rolf’s newest book The Vagabond’s Way (2:30); how so much of what we talk about when we talk about travel has industrialized middle-class presumptions (7:30); the motivations and ethical considerations that underpin seeking out disadvantaged neighborhoods as a traveler (15:00); how preconceived narratives and “cultural extraction” often motivates people’s experience in a city, in ways that do not always benefit the city (25:00); what “dark tourism” and “voluntourism” are, and what the ethical ramifications are for travelers (32:00); and the difference between articulating ideals, and the work of acting on those ideals (45:00). Chloe Cooper Jones (@CCooperJones) is the author of Easy Beauty: A Memoir. She has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist in Feature Writing, and was the recipient of a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant, as well as a Howard Foundation Grant from Brown University. In this special crossover episode, we're spotlighting Buffalo's 1973 Volcanic Rock—a raw, proto-metal gem that helped shape the sound of 80s Metal and 90s Rock. With primal riffs and fearless energy, Buffalo laid the groundwork for the heaviness embraced by bands like Metallica and Soundgarden. Picture it: the airwaves dominated by Dark Side of the Moon, Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, and Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Rock was entering its teenage years, shedding its innocence for something darker, more primal. Halfway around the world, Australia was a raw, untamed frontier where danger lurked in every shadow. Venomous creatures, desolate outback stretches, and a wild, unrelenting spirit shaped the people and their art. It was here, in this harsh and unpredictable landscape, that Buffalo unleashed their sophomore album, Volcanic Rock, on Vertigo Records. Like the searing sun, it scorched a path for heavy music, standing defiantly alongside its better-known contemporaries.Buffalo was no Zeppelin or Sabbath knockoff. This Brisbane-to-Sydney transplant created their own blend of bluesy grit and proto-metal menace. Formed initially as “Head,” their pivot to Buffalo was guided by a manager who believed that bands starting with “B” (Beatles, Beach Boys) were bound for success. A dart on a map landed on Buffalo, and thus began a name and sound etched in volcanic fury.Heavy as Hell, Raw as the OutbackVolcanic Rock lived up to its name—primitive, thunderous, and unpredictable. With Dave Tice's raw vocal delivery leading the charge, and guitarist John Baxter's primal riffage painting sonic landscapes, the album combined blues-rock roots with a proto-doom intensity that felt otherworldly. Songs like “Freedom” deliver nine-minute odysseys, meandering through psychedelic jam territory before crashing back into riff-laden crescendos.Yet, the record wasn't just music—it was spectacle. Its controversial cover art—a volcano shaped like a female torso spewing lava—reflected the wild creativity and raw edge of the band's ethos. It was shocking then and remains iconic now, an image as bold as the sound within.Misfits in a Golden AgeDespite their innovative sound, Buffalo never quite broke through. Opening for heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, they faced the mischief of tour mates like Ritchie Blackmore, who infamously sabotaged their set. Still, they soldiered on, creating an album that influenced generations of grunge, stoner rock, and doom metal—long before the labels existed. But Buffalo's story is also one of commercial failure and creative frustration. Pushed by their label to pivot toward radio-friendly fare, they resisted, choosing instead to blaze their own trail. By the time their final album, Average Rock 'n' Roller, hit shelves in 1977, the band was running on fumes. Yet, Volcanic Rock remains their defining statement, a timeless blueprint for heavy rock adventurers. The Legacy: Why Volcanic Rock Still MattersSo why revisit Volcanic Rock in 2025? Because it's an artifact of pure, unadulterated rock energy—a raw, imperfect gem that prefigures everything from Kyuss to Queens of the Stone Age. Its primal simplicity, coupled with its audacious ambition, captures the essence of a time when rock was still dangerous.Want to know more? Movie of the Year: 1973Don't Look NowThis week we discuss Don't Look Now! Can this movie chase its way to our 1973 Movie of the Year? After losing their daughter Christine to an accidental drowning, Laura and John Baxter relocate to Venice, Italy so he can restore an old, and somehow fake(??), church. But while there, they encounter a couple of odd sisters, one of who seems to have the gift of second sight. They tell Laura that the late Christine is still with them and this news hits the couple in two very different ways. Laura is suddenly happy and exploring the worlds of spiritualism and religion, but John is skeptical despite the fact that he seems to be having visions of his own of a figure very much like his daughter, moving through the allies of Venice. But John's visions do nothing to diminish his skepticism and this leaves him half blind as he tries to reconcile his existential certainty with his quite hope that he can reconnect with his daughter. But when he gets close to doing this, boom it's a creepy old lady instead and she slits his throat. Grief really is complex! The movie is iconic, but is it scary? And do we remember the right parts of it? Also, what does it say about the horrors of precognition? We get into it!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. SHR # 3017:: An Electron is An Electron is An Electron - John Baxter - Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth's Surface Electrons - Environmental medicine generally addresses environmental factors with a negative impact on human health. However, emerging scientific research has revealed a surprisingly positive and overlooked environmental factor on health: direct physical contact with the vast supply of electrons on the surface of the Earth. Modern lifestyle separates humans from such contact. The research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and un-wellness. Reconnection with the Earth's electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth's electrons from the ground into the body. - CARL RECOMMENDS: superhumanradio.net/carl-recommends - - View and download all shows at https://superhumanradio.net - Visit us on Instagram: @superhumanradio - Support SHR - https://superhumanradio.net/make-a-donation
SHR # 3013:: Exploring a New Era of Healing Modalities - John Baxter - We always hear people saying inflammation is at the root of every disease today. If you're one of these people, then you want to listen to this next interview with great attention. What if there is a machine that you could get into and completely extinguish all of the chronic inflammation in your body, would you do it? Diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, bowel diseases are all said to occur from years of chronic inflammation. What if I told you you're already in that machine for 7 to 8 hours a day, and it's your bed at night while you sleep. You can turn your bed into a therapeutic session of 7 to 8 hours and completely crush the inflammation in your body! And this is not just my opinion it's the opinion of numerous scientist and publish peer review studies. On this week's podcast, I've got John Baxter, a mattress veteran and innovator decided to create the future, he did just that with Anti Aging Bed. It didn't come easy, as he and his team worked tirelessly with the best doctors and engineers he could find. John tells his story of breaking his neck and healing it using various modalities combined with the right pillow and mattress. This led him to creating the Anti-Aging Bed and exploring various other technologies such as Tesla Plasmas and EMF shielding. He then was able to augment proven technologies for cellular regeneration for a mattress. One of the coolest pieces of technologies in my opinion is John's Anti-Aging Bed Cover, which combines various technologies, such as: electron, nano, and ion technologies. John demonstrates the power of this cover on the podcast episode, so this is another great episode to watch on YouTube so you can see what he's doing. But he shows the how we're being bombarded by EMF's constantly at a high rate, and then by simply lying on the mattress cover, you become completely grounded and shielded from all that negative electrical charge. John credits this technology for helping many recover from dementia, PTSD, autistic symptoms, and chronic pain. For discounts on anything at the Anti-Aging Bed, use the code "JOELEVAN"

In this biologically compromised world, it's our job to optimize ourselves so we can get more health out of our existence. In the biohacking protocol, sleep is the neglected or even forgotten pillar, but it's just as critical as exercise and nutrition. Today is an interesting discussion on sleep and how we can heal ourselves through the magic of sleep. But sometimes it's not so easy and we need a little help. Some people start sleep rituals, others take supplements, and today's guest John Baxter shares with us what worked for him while he was battling his own neck and back pain for 15 years. I grew up in North Carolina and first moved to Paris in 2008, where I've lived for the better part of fourteen years as a writer, musician in the indie-pop band Slim and The Beast, and prolific worker of part-time jobs. Currently, I'm a literary tour guide and lecturer for Context Travel, an adjunct creative writing teacher at the Sorbonne, and a host of the Paris Writers' Salon with the author John Baxter. I hold an MA in social theory from University College London and an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. My debut novel, Slim and The Beast (2015), was a coming-of-age story about male intimacy, the pursuit of passion, and growing up in North Carolina. I recently finished a historical fiction about history, memory, and the Nazi Occupation of Poland; publication is forthcoming. I am building my own literary community on Substack, where I write weekly essays and fiction. "Nature accompanies me, exalts me" - Henri MatisseA Serenade to a Sunday.... Reflections on a house and a garden."I buy another five cypress. I work hard, water, pray, read them poetry. I listen to books as I dig... A Field Guide to Getting Lost, Rebecca Solnet….A Paris year, John Baxter….and I dream of a day where they will drill their taproot down into the earth, deep, hardy specimens, that I never even water. I go back to Italy and I look at the cypress, in gardens, next to villas, lined up on roads. They seem to hold the measure of us, grand companions on the journey of life. Guardians and mysterious knowing trees, always I feel better when I see them in the distance. When I realised I could have a taste of Italy here in my back yard, well why not? The local church is God's plan for advancing the Gospel. What are you doing now to reach the people in your community? Continuing the conversation on missions abroad and at home, Brody and John Baxter discuss how we can be a resource and share the Gospel with those in our communities. Believers, let's live out the Gospel. We need to fight against the dangers of the consumer, or spectator, mentality in our churches. On Episode 4 of X-Ray Vision, Jason Concepcion and Cody Ziglar have the high ground when talking about three incredible shorts in Disney+'s Star Wars: Visions (dropping 9/22)! In Previously On (1:26)… they go bananas (better than flinging their feces, right?) for the trailer of Hulu's upcoming Hit-Monkey series as well as recap the latest episode of What If…? and predict what's coming next. Then in The Airlock (17:09) Jason and Cody dive deep (deeeeep) on three shorts from Star Wars: Visions: “The Duel” (Kamikaze Douga), “Tatooine Rhapsody” (Studio Colorido), and “The Twins” (Studio TRIGGER). Next, Jason cracks open The Omnibus (42:23) to explore the life and work of visionary director Akira Kurosawa and his prominent influence on the Star Wars universe. In The Hive Mind (1:00:34), Jason, Cody, and writer Alicia Lutes question whether Star Wars needs cinema when it has such good serialized storytelling in Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, and more. Finally, in today's Endgame (1:19:57 )Jason & co. award their Medals of Yavin to the best characters from these three Visions shorts. Who was your favorite? Use #XRVEndgame to let us know!
