The ALL ME® Podcast Omega 3 Testing – Kelly Patterson Summary In this podcast episode, Tavis Piattoly interviews Kelly Patterson, a clinical nutrition educator at OmegaQuant Analytics, about the importance of knowing your omega-3 score and the risks of being deficient. They discuss the omega-3 index test, which measures omega-3 levels in red blood cells, and how OmegaQuant measures it. They also explore the typical blood levels of omega-3 in Americans and the benefits of optimizing levels between 8% and 12%. These benefits include reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, improving brain health, and mitigating the risk of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. The primary reason for low omega-3 levels in Americans is the lack of fish intake. The principal themes of the conversation are preterm birth rates and the role of omega-3 in reducing the risk, the potential benefits of omega-3 in brain injury and concussion recovery, the importance of dose and form in omega-3 supplements, the time it takes to optimize omega-3 levels, the sources of fish high in omega-3, and the benefits of OmegaQuant testing. The conversation emphasizes the need for individuals to measure and monitor their omega-3 levels and the importance of individualization in nutrition. Takeaways ·        Knowing your omega-3 score is important as it can indicate the risk of specific medical conditions. ·        The omega-3 index test measures omega-3 levels in red blood cells, providing a longer-term idea of omega-3 intakes. ·        The ideal omega-3 index range is between 8% and 12%, with levels below 4% considered deficient. ·        Low omega-3 levels increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. ·        Optimizing omega-3 levels can improve cardiovascular health, brain function, and metabolic health. ·        The primary reason for low omega-3 levels in Americans is the lack of fish intake. Omega-3 plays a role in reducing the risk of preterm birth, and it is important for individuals who can become pregnant to increase their omega-3 levels before pregnancy. ·        Omega-3 may have potential benefits in brain injury and concussion recovery. ·        The dose and form of omega-3 supplements are important factors to consider. Look for supplements with an adequate dose and consider triglyceride form fish oil for better absorption. ·        It takes about three months to optimize omega-3 levels, and consistency in taking supplements and consuming omega-3-rich foods is key. ·        The best sources of fish high in omega-3 are salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and herring. ·        OmegaQuant testing is recommended for everyone to measure and monitor their omega-3 levels, and it can be done through the OmegaQuant website or with the help of healthcare practitioners. In episode 10 of the PRP, Adam connects with first time half marathoner, education counselor and New York City savant Kate Babcock, who has been preparing for the Philadelphia Half Marathon on November 20th, 2021. Kate shares the tale of how moving to New York and being exposed to communities different than the one she grew up in influenced her decision to go back to school and pursue a career in mentoring youth. Kate sheds some insight into what type of exercises she did in her everyday life, before race preparation began, and explains the benefits of being a "step ahead" because of it on week 1 of her plan. Things get vulnerable when Kate apprises listeners with a story about an extremely hot training run when her emotions and anxiety got the best of her. What happened to Kate on the West Side Highway and why wasn't she in Central Park where she normally runs?! Kelly Patterson, veteran marathoner and Kate's father, joins the show as guest host and shares the story of how he fell in love with running in his early 40's while battling feelings of being over exerted in his career at BYU as a Political Science Department Chair. KP's story is as pure as they come, and his passion for the sport remains unalloyed as he has now crossed 50+ marathon finish lines in the past couple decades. Will Kelly put on his dad cap and tell some embarrassing stories about Kate as a child? The three deep dive on chronic injuries, the beauty of Strava, code brown initiatives, and of course, because this is a Babcock edition, running drip. What does "joie de vivre" mean and how does Kelly utilize it as a reminder to run for the right reasons? What are Kate's goals for her inaugural outing? Does Kate's dog Luna have more followers on Instagram than the PRP does?! All of these answers and much more in the latest edition of the PreRacePodcast. When you think of sex-trafficking, you may think of unspeakable things happening to unknown faces in far off places. That’s probably why you live where you do. You want to be surrounded by people who hold the same morals and values you have and protect yourself from such evil. If so, you may be shocked to learn that sex crimes are perpetrated against children right here in our own backyard. And that it has been going on for years. You might also find it hard to fathom that there are organized groups of people committing heinous crimes against our children in communities we've always believed to be protected from the world. It is time to educate ourselves and speak out against these atrocities. In this special episode of Longing for More, we talk to former victim of sex trafficking, Kelly Patterson, and the Executive Director of a local domestic abuse shelter in Central South Dakota, Sarah Reinhart. They are going to share what to look for and what to do if you see any possible evidence of trafficking in your community. Be sure to come back next week when Kelly shares her personal story of how God protected her during her years of being trafficked and how she is using the experience to help others understand one of the worst epidemics devastating our world today.

365 Days until Election 2020. Here's a Preview. (0:30)Guest: Kelly Patterson, PhD, Professor of Political Science, BYU; Adam Dynes, Phd, Professor of Political Science, BYUWe're exactly one year out from the 2020 Presidential Election, so we've got BYU political scientists Kelly Patterson and Adam Dynes in studio to talk about what's ahead. Why is Britain's Parliament so Unruly? (18:22)Guest: Joel Selway, Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young UniversityOne thing Americans have learned from the Brexit drama in Britain is just how different the British Parliament is from our Congress. We're hearing members of the opposition Labour Party shouting down Prime Minister Boris Johnson a few months ago during one of his regular appearances in the British House of Commons. The closest thing we get to that in America is when the President delivers his state of the union address and members of the opposing party refuse to clap or stand. Why is Britain's Parliament so rowdy? And more importantly, how exactly does it work? Mental Health in the Workplace (38:06)Guest: Kelly Greenwood, Founder and CEO of Mind Share PartnersWhen you have the flu, you call in sick and your boss is probably glad you do. But what happens if you have a panic attack? A really bad day with your depression?  An extreme bout of insomnia that keeps you up all night? Most of us still aren't sure how to talk to mental health challenges with our bosses. We're more likely to fudge the details and say we need to take a day because we've got a stomachache or a headache. Physical ailments seem more legitimate. Why Grocery Stores Don't Help Communities in Food Deserts to Stay Healthy (51:05)Guest: Kelseanna Hollis-Hansen, PhD Candidate at the University at Buffalo and Graduate Research Assistant at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical SciencesIn places sometimes referred to as “food deserts” healthy food options are farther and more expensive than normal. The obvious answer would be to just put up another supermarket. But researchers at the University at Buffalo found that new grocery stores actually lead to a decrease in people eating their fruits and veggies. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are Struggling to Survive (1:04:49)Guest: Delece Smith-Barrow is Senior Editor for Higher Education at The Hechinger ReportMartin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Spike Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, Chadwick Boseman –aka Black Panther. That's just a partial list of prominent African Americans who graduated from an HBCU, which stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. There are more than a hundred HBCUs around the country –Howard, Tuskegee, Spelman, Shaw, Fisk, Morehouse –are some names you might recognize. If you saw Beyonce's Coachella performance last year –or the Netflix documentary about it -that whole thing was an ode to HBCUs. She had marching bands and step dancers. Beyonce's HBCU tribute was well-timed, because many of these schools are in crisis. Enrollment is down. Government funding is down. More than a dozen HBCUs have closed. Racial Discipline and Achievement Gaps Are Related (1:26:32)Guest: Francis Pearman, Assistant Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford UniversityIn schools across the US, discipline doesn't get handed out evenly. Black high school students are twice as likely to be suspended as white or Hispanic students. Black students also lag behind white students on standardized test scores. Are these two gaps –the discipline gap and the achievement gap –linked, somehow?
