A Violent Sex Crime Broke Her, Retired Sheriff Recovering From PTSD. When Trauma Breaks the Strongest: A Retired Florida Sheriff's Deputy Shares Her Journey From Violent Crime Scenes to PTSD Recovery. In the heart of Orange County, Florida, where the sun and theme parks often mask the darker truths of urban life, violent crime remains an ongoing concern. With a violent crime rate of 836 incidents per 100,000 residents in 2023, significantly higher than the national average, law enforcement officers in the area are exposed to deeply traumatic scenes on a regular basis. It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. Donna Michaels knows this firsthand. A retired Orange County Sheriff's Deputy, Michaels spent years responding to violent sex crimes, tragic accidents, and gut-wrenching child deaths. One case still haunts her to this day, a brutal gang sexual assault involving a teenage girl, discovered wandering the streets in a drug-induced haze, her body covered in graffiti. The injuries were severe. "She didn't just survive the attack, she survived the betrayal," Donna recalls. “One of the suspects in the attack was her own brother. And to make it worse, her own mother actively obstructed the investigation.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The trauma of that investigation didn't fade when the case stalled. It followed Donna. “We were up against walls that no amount of law enforcement training prepares you for,” she said during a recent interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, available on Apple and Spotify podcast platforms. A Violent Sex Crime Broke Her, Retired Sheriff Recovering From PTSD. For Donna, the trauma didn't stop when she hung up the badge. It lingered, a constant companion that took the form of cumulative PTSD, a condition many officers suffer in silence. “Every time I thought I had moved past it, the memories came back,” she says. “We don't talk enough about what happens after the uniform comes off.” Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . From the Front Lines to Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn Donna took her story public. She began sharing her experiences across social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, hoping that openness might help others who were silently battling similar demons. Her vulnerability struck a chord. It was through this transparency that her book, Courageously Broken: A Memoir About Overcoming Adversity and Conquering the Battle Scars of Life, came to life. In it, Donna recounts her journey from a small town and an abusive home to the Navy, and eventually, to law enforcement. She tells of skydiving with Navy SEALs and investigating child drownings, moments of courage and collapse alike. “I didn't write it because I had all the answers,” she says. “I wrote it because people need to know they're not alone.” A Violent Sex Crime Broke Her, Retired Sheriff Recovering From PTSD. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. The Birth of Heroes United To Heal Inspired by the overwhelming response to her story, Donna founded Heroes United To Heal, a nonprofit aimed at eradicating “Hero Suicide.” The organization raises awareness about PTSD and works to eliminate the stigma surrounding it, especially among veterans and first responders. “Too many of us are suffering in silence,” Donna said. “The same people who are willing to charge into burning buildings or confront armed suspects often won't admit when they're struggling emotionally. That needs to change.” Heroes United To Heal doesn't just talk about the problem, it funds real solutions. The organization provides financial support for therapies not covered by the VA or insurance, including equine therapy, EMDR, and group retreats. “We want to make sure that no hero is left behind, especially not because of bureaucracy,” Donna added. You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. The Sheriff's Legacy and the Shadows of Trauma The Orange County Sheriff's Office, one of the largest in Florida, with a $300 million budget and more than 2,700 employees, has a long and proud history dating back to 1845. Today, it serves more than 1.4 million residents and millions of tourists annually. Yet, for all its resources, Donna believes more needs to be done to support those who serve within it. A Violent Sex Crime Broke Her, Retired Sheriff Recovering From PTSD. "Leadership matters,” Donna says. “But so does listening, really listening, to what your deputies are carrying with them every day.” From Darkness to Light Donna is still recovering from PTSD. “I don't know that I'll ever be fully healed,” she says. “But I've come a long way from where I was. I've gone from feeling broken to feeling brave enough to tell the truth.” Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. She continues to share her journey through speaking engagements, podcasts, and social media. Her message remains simple yet powerful: “We are not weak. We are not thin-skinned. We are warriors.” In a world where news often focuses on the dramatic moments, the arrests, the car chases, the headlines, Donna's story serves as a crucial reminder that the aftermath matters, too. Not every scar is visible. Not every crime ends with an arrest. And not every hero finishes the fight in uniform. A Violent Sex Crime Broke Her, Retired Sheriff Recovering From PTSD. But with courage, community, and honest conversations, healing is possible. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. My conversation continues today with Sarah Yuen Gilliat. One thing she teaches us all is that it is possible to get your life back! She is a registered clinical hypnotherapist, specialising in trauma and PTSD, trained and certified. She came to clinical hypnotherapy after a 30-year career as an international broadcast correspondent, and a government, corporate and military strategic communications consultant. After spending two years in Afghanistan, deployed with UK, US, Danish and Afghan troops as combat camera, plus three decades covering conflicts and natural disasters around the world, she chose to study clinical hypnotherapy, specifically to help traumatised people with PTSD-type symptoms.  During her training, she was led to study the work of John G. Watkins, an American military psychiatrist in WW2, who used clinical hypnotherapy to heal American soldiers coming back from the European front, as well as others who did the same.  In each instance, clinical hypnotherapy worked wonders to heal traumatised minds and bodies of shell shock/combat fatigue/PTSD. She's an amazing person to talk with and one of my favorite things she says is that she is looking forward to spending the rest of my life helping people eliminate their PTSD symptoms and take back control of their body and their lives. Today is the day when you embark on a transformative journey that is uniquely yours. It's a journey that requires careful consideration of your current position, a sharp focus on your desired destination, and the creation of a well-thought-out roadmap to guide you along the way.Much like the excitement you felt when embarking on a long road trip with a trailer hitched to your vehicle, this transformation journey holds the promise of adventure and growth. However, it's not a journey to be taken lightly or by simply "winging it," even though the idea may appeal to some, just as your wife might have enjoyed the spontaneity of road trips. In your previous travels, you knew the importance of having a clear plan. You didn't start driving aimlessly and hope to arrive at your desired destination. Instead, you carefully plotted your route. You identified your starting point, set your destination, and let technology create a map that guided your way. It was this methodical approach that ensured your trips were enjoyable, efficient, and successful.Today, we apply the same principle to your personal transformation journey. You begin by acknowledging where you currently stand, recognizing your strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. Then, with unwavering focus, you define where you want to go—the destination of your personal growth and evolution. Just as you relied on a map during your road trips, you will create a clear and detailed plan for this journey. This map will serve as your guide, helping you navigate through challenges, make informed decisions, and stay on course. It will provide the structure and direction necessary to transform your aspirations into reality. So, as you prepare to set off on this transformative journey, remember the importance of planning and preparation. Today, you lay the foundation for your growth and development, just as you did when setting off on those exhilarating road trips. However, today, we're going to delve deeper and shed light on the less visible but equally significant internal struggle that individuals with PTSD face. We'll explore three key aspects that help us grasp PTSD as an internal battle: the invisible scars and emotional turmoil it brings, its profound impact on self-identity and self-worth, and the challenges of reintegration. Join us on this journey to understand how PTSD is not just about surviving external events but also about the internal battles that follow.PTSD may not leave physical scars, but its effects are far from invisible. The emotional turmoil experienced by those with PTSD is a constant internal struggle. We'll discuss how these hidden wounds can manifest in various ways, affecting not only one's mental health but also their physical well-being. By acknowledging the internal strife, we begin to understand the complexity of PTSD.PTSD often shatters the very foundations of self-identity and self-worth. In this segment, we'll explore how individuals with PTSD grapple with questions of who they are, what they believe, and where they fit in the world. Understanding this internal conflict is crucial in empathizing with those on their healing journey.Returning to a sense of normalcy after experiencing trauma can be an arduous journey. Reintegration becomes a major challenge, and we'll discuss why. By examining this aspect of PTSD, we hope to shed light on the internal battles individuals face when trying to rebuild their lives. To truly comprehend the internal battle of PTSD, we need to investigate the root causes and triggers. Why do certain events or reminders trigger such intense emotional responses? We'll delve into the psychology behind these triggers and explore how understanding them can be a pivotal step in the healing process. As we conclude our discussion, we will offer five valuable strategies for building resilience and healing from within. These approaches empower individuals to navigate the storm of PTSD recovery, ultimately finding peace within themselves. By focusing on inner strength, we aim to inspire hope and resilience in those battling the internal effects of PTSD. "In the journey of healing from the inside out, we uncover the strength within to navigate the storm of PTSD recovery, ultimately finding peace within ourselves." We discussed what the research on TM reveals about the nature of consciousness, what TM is and how it contributes to PTSD treatment, increased productivity for individuals and organizations. David shared the history of TM in Armenia, how it was brought to help overcome the suffering that unfolded after the earthquake of 1988. After the Nagorno-Karabakh war of 2020, TM is, once again, being used in Armenia to overcome the mental health crisis. We also discussed the so-called Maharishi effect. The research demonstrates that when 1% of the population practices TM or if the more advanced techniques of group meditation are used, it leads to a decrease on in overall level of violent incidents thereby affecting the nation more massively, including people who do not meditate. You can find out more on the research on TM at https://aptsdr.org and https://www.tm.org. ----------------------------------- About Brand New Thought & Razmik Brand New Thought is a platform dedicated to paradigm shifts in personal development. "Not all heroes wear capes." This is so true... they sometimes wear fins too! Lyndi Leggett wears fins, and to many she is an absolute superhero.  A few years ago, sick of the corporate world Lyndi was trawling through social media and came across an article about David J Lawrence Sr and his son, Scuba Junior.  Following surgery, David Jr was rendered disabled, paralyzed from the neck down.  Today, albeit he is still paralyzed on one side, David Jr has regained use of his right side and leads a much more fulfilling life.  Lyndi reached out to David Sr asking what it would take for her to open a Scuba Gym in Australia. The Scuba Gym Australia operates out of the Central Coast and provides diving possibilities for people with a vast array of disabilities.  Throughout this episode Lyndi talks with passion about the successes of her divers so far (see below for links to the videos of those mentioned during the show) and what the future holds for The Scuba Gym. The Scuba Gym is now a not-for-profit operation and Lyndi holds the golden ticket to the growth of it.  Lyndi's dream is to see a Scuba Gym in every major city in Australia. Quite rightly so too. If you would like to help Lyndi in any way possible then get in touch.  You can email or send a message to Lyndi directly or through the show links and social media. For those of you that would love to join the scuba gym but are not sure if you can. Lyndi has a qualified dive doctor who can talk to you about your disabilities and confirm if you can be authorised to get in the water and have a go at scuba diving.  #getinvolved you'll love it!! The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Jenny Hughes is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma and PTSD. As a clinician, she practices EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure therapy. Jenny recently published a workbook designed for clients to use on their own or with their therapist called the PTSD Recovery Workbook, which can be found on Amazon.Through her clinical work, Jenny discovered that her true passion is to support other trauma therapists through the inevitable experience of vicarious trauma. While trauma work is incredibly rewarding, Jenny knew the therapists making space for this healing deserved to be cared for too. This inspired her to create The BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective, a membership site that helps trauma therapists go from feeling drained and demoralized to energized and empowered. Members of BRAVE work with Jenny to become more aware of how to name VT, develop realistic ways to tame VT, and ultimately reframe VT by thriving in their professional and personal lives. In This EpisodeJenn's websiteBrave Providers WebsiteBrave Providers on InstagramBrave Providers on TikTokThe Brave Vicarious Trauma Community on FacebookThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5739761/advertisement

Micah and Tommi Kirkpatrick have been married for fifteen years, run a thriving health coaching business together, and live by a commitment to personal growth, choosing love over fear, and the C.O.R.E. values of Courage, Orientation, Reality, and Endurance.   Micah, a Marine from Georgia, and Tommi, a Missionary from Boston, fell in love at first sight during an Easter church service and had a whirlwind courtship defined by old-fashioned hand-written letters and a pending deployment to a combat war zone, but this is not a storybook romance. Theirs is a story of faith, adventure, and perseverance. As Micah built a career as a Data Scientist after serving in the Marine Corps, and Tommi transitioned from personally training Marines to home educating their children, they faced many trials, from the lifelong PTSD recovery journey and clashing conflict resolution techniques, to financial disasters and family life with five kids!
