ESPN has released one of the better benchmarks of the summer...the Football Power Index. Producer Josh takes you through the Top 25 and Nebraska as we get closer to football season. We also check in on Scott Wolf at Inside USC.
In this week's edition of Y's Guys, we dive into the latest developments across BYU sports, kicking off with a spotlight on five-star QB recruit Ryder Lyons, who made his official visit to BYU this weekend after a stop at Oregon. The panel discusses the implications of his looming decision, and what it could mean for the quarterback depth chart. Meanwhile, ESPN's Football Power Index puts BYU's College Football Playoff chances at 12.6%, while LJ Martin ranks among the top returning Big 12 running backs, and Jake Retzlaff holds the 7th-best QB grade according to Pro Football Focus.Basketball news dominates the middle segment, as Kevin Young's historic coaching extension locks him in at BYU for 8–10 years, a massive commitment by the program following his debut Sweet 16 season. The newly released Big 12 basketball schedule promises high-energy home matchups with Arizona, Houston, and rival Utah, plus a road-heavy slate including Baylor, Kansas, and West Virginia. With Egor Demin officially receiving a Green Room invite for the NBA Draft, the Cougars continue gaining national traction. This week's featured guests are BYU American Heritage professors Chris Karpowitz and Kelly Patterson, who tackle the Top 5 Myths about American Heritage, one of the university's most dreaded and loved graduation requirements. From fears about failing to myths about political bias and boredom, the professors offer sharp insight and good humor—revealing that they themselves graduated from BYU without taking the class! Their candid discussion also highlights how student-athletes perform in the course, and how teaching the class has evolved.Additional headlines include James Corrigan's national title in the 3000m Steeplechase, BYU's strong showings in Track & Field, softball phenom Rita Tavita's commitment, and shoutouts to Madi Allphin White, named College Sports Communicators' Videographer of the Year. The show wraps with historic notes, sports birthdays, and a memorable quote from Tony Gwynn, capping off another fun, insightful, and Cougar-filled livestream. Hosted on Acast. Visit: https://www.ysguys.comOn this week's Y's Guys livestream, with Brian Logan filling in for Dave McCann, the show kicks off with major headlines in BYU sports. The top story: Kevin Young's contract extension, locking in BYU's head coach “for the foreseeable future,” following his Sweet 16 debut season. The Phoenix Suns were reportedly interested in bringing him back to the NBA, but BYU acted swiftly. On the personal side, the Youngs are also expecting their fourth child this fall—a baby girl. The show also reacts to the House v. NCAA settlement, which paves the way for direct school payments to athletes starting this summer.Dave checks in live from the Deseret News High School Sports Awards, where he's emceeing and Travis Hansen is the keynote speaker. Meanwhile, BYU Football summer workouts are underway, and the crew highlights ESPN's Football Power Index projections: 8 wins expected, 29th national ranking, and a 12.6% chance to reach the College Football Playoff. They also preview key games this fall and break down the upcoming bowl season schedule—including a potential Big 12 appearance in the Alamo or Citrus Bowl.Special guest Andrew Gentry, a 6'7", 327-pound transfer from Michigan, joins the show to talk about his road to Provo. Gentry reflects on his time under Jim Harbaugh, why he ultimately chose BYU, and what it was like getting recruited while serving a mission in Argentina. From blocking in the national championship win over Washington to preparing for the BYU–Utah showdown on October 18, Gentry brings a championship pedigree to the Cougars' O-line.The show wraps with basketball updates, including BYU vs. Clemson at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic and a rematch with Wisconsin in Salt Lake. Dick Vitale ranks BYU No. 7, and Egor Demin remains a possible NBA first-round pick. There's also news from Track & Field, Women's Volleyball, Soccer, and a spotlight on Jane Hedengren, who just broke a national mile record. The “On This Day” trivia features Secretariat, Donald Duck, and Cyndi Lauper, and the team congratulates Utah Valley University on joining the Big West Conference in 2026. Hosted on Acast. Introduction: Host Michael Rand starts with the Vikings vs. Lions game Sunday, viewing it through the lens of ESPN's Football Power Index. Though Minnesota is the only undefeated team in the NFC, the index says the 4-1 Lions are the NFL's best team. That defines the stakes for Sunday's showdown at U.S Bank Stadium. Plus the baseball playoffs have been both compelling and frustrating. 12:00: Star Tribune Lynx writer Kent Youngblood joins Rand to set up Friday's critical Game 4 of the WNBA Finals at Target Center. Minnesota is down 2-1 in the series after Wednesday's heartbreaking loss. 19:00: Fantasy football picks return. 27:00: Bring on the NBA season and great expectations for the Wolves.
-Ask that question 10 years ago and you get laughed out of the building, as Nebraska was routinely winning 9 to 10 games a year. But no bowl game since 2016 makes it a fair question-ESPN's Football Power Index ratings put Nebraska at No. 41, with a projection approximate record of 6.5-5.5-It seems like most Husker fans are predicting 7 or 8 wins…maybe up to 9…is 6 acceptable with a bowl game bid or disappointing? You've heard of hot takes. You're probably familiar with cold takes. But, do you know of lukewarm takes? They might be the truest predictions of all, and hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams are serving a helping of those lukewarm SEC football takes on today's episode. What constitutes a lukewarm take? It's an against-the-grain prediction that doesn't rise to the piping-hot level of a hot take. A surprise SEC team will be ranked come October? Yep. We've got an idea about which one. How many coaches will be fired? Several. More than the number who are on the hot seat right now. A sleeper in the Heisman Trophy race? Certainly. Call your bookie with this bet. Also, are Missouri and Ole Miss actually playoff teams? Thoughts on that, too. Later in the episode, an examination of ESPN's Football Power Index and some peculiarities within the teams it projects to be top playoff contenders.

ESPN has developed its own system to predict the success of college football teams, known as the ESPN Football Power Index. The Football Power Index, known as FPI, combines a countless number of factors such as returning production, recruiting class ranking, strength of schedule, etc. into ESPN's model and gives each team its power index. This year, the FPI loves LSU. Per ESPN's FPI for 2023, LSU is the 4th ranked team in the nation behind only Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia with the Texas Longhorns rounding out the top five. How accurate is the FPI and how much can we really use this metric to predict not just the success of the LSU Tigers but predictions for all teams across college football? Plus, Louisville women's basketball standout Hailey Van Lith has entered the transfer portal and visited LSU this week. Van Lith averaged almost 20 points per game, best on the Cardinals team. What would it mean, both on and off the court, for Kim Mulkey to land a big time transfer like Van Lith for the 2023-24 season? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Carolina Panthers might've restored their playoff hopes with a decisive 37-23 win over Detroit on Christmas Eve but it came at a cost as Jaycee Horn fractured his wrist in the win. Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks announced on Monday that Horn would have surgery on his wrist on Tuesday without providing any details on whether Horn could return this season. In response, the Panthers brought in former All-Pro Josh Norman for a workout with the expectation that he will sign. What should the realistic expectations for Norman be? Can Norman help propel the Panthers to the playoffs as he did in 2014?According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Panthers have a 30.6% chance to be NFC South champions. Simply, if Carolina wins its two remaining games at Tampa, on Sunday, then the following week at New Orleans they'll be the division's lone representative in the playoffs. Should the Panthers chances be viewed as higher or lower than ESPN's projection?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn Jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. A win is a win when you haven't won consistently for a while-But the FPI says Nebraska is likely to end at 4-8. Last year, Nebraska got to 3-3 after a win against Northwestern and lost their final 6 games. Is a similar demise in play this year?Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
