How split ticket voting impacted races across the country

On the Ballot

On this episode: Split-ticket voting, also known as ticket splitting, occurs when voters choose candidates from different parties in a single election — voting Republican Donald Trump for president and Democratic congressional candidates, for example. In today's partisan political landscape, many outlets and pundits did not expect there to be significant levels of split ticket voting this cycle. Though as the dust settles nearly a month after the election, ticket splitting looks to have played a big role in some of the tightest races.  Kyle Kondik — managing editor of Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics — joins the show long with Ballotpedia managing editor Cory Eucalittlo to pore over the data and highlight the biggest surprises and trends to keep an eye out for in ‘26.  Sign up for our Newsletters: https://ballotpedia.org/Ballotpedia_Email_Updates  Stream "On the Ballot" on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts. Since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee, the story of this election cycle has been how close the race appears to be. Now, with only 10 days until Election Day, former President Trump and Vice President Harris remain neck-and-neck — but could last-minute momentum change the state of the race? Kyle Kondik, the managing editor of Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, discusses why the race remains so tight, what he's learning from early voting and recent polls, and how he believes the race may change during these final days. The FBI has opened an investigation into the leak of top-secret U.S. intelligence documents relating to a potential attack on Iranian targets by Israel. As the fallout from that continues, talks are set to resume between Arab nations and Israel on a possible ceasefire as tensions continue to reach a fever pitch in the region. FOX News Contributor and Former CIA Bureau Chief Dan Hoffman details how these developments could affect diplomacy and the intelligence community. Plus, a look at what North Korean soldiers joining the Russians in Ukraine means for the greater international order, and the potential for foreign entities to sow discord in U.S. elections. The old wisdom held that Democrats could rely on the votes of those in the Black and Latino communities - often immigrant families that felt that party were on their side. But in recent elections that has started to shift. Kamala Harris is struggling to win the Black vote at the same levels Joe Biden won it in 2020, which pushed him over the line. And her latest pitch is an economic plan specifically tailored to Black men. Is this smart or reductive? And can Trump capitalise on that gap? We also discuss the election of Representative Mike Johnson as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Carah Ong Whaley also talks with Gretchen Barton, Principal of Worthy Strategy Group, LLC, about a new study of perceptions of leadership and what it means for women in politics. Bellwether and swing states are often the battlegrounds upon which the US presidential race is won. Historically, Ohio has been one of the most important - but that is changing. So which states matter the most for the upcoming 2024 election? And how will Trump or Biden (or anyone else) win them over? Kyle Kondik is the Author of ‘The Bellwether: Why Ohio Picks the president”. He joins Alex Andreou in The Bunker. “We're seeing a shift in the key states in the electoral college, partially due to Trump.” - Kyle Kondik. “Both Trump and Biden have over 50% unfavorability, these voters tend to skew to the right but were not a fan of what happened on January 6th. These voters are likely to decide the next election” - Kyle Kondik.  “Both Biden and Trump's ability to tell a story defines the ground they are battling over” - Alex Andreou. www.patreon.com/bunkercast Book Link: https://www.ohioswallow.com/book/The+Bellwether Written and presented by Alex Andreou. The House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer released a memo detailing evidence of the Biden family's foreign business dealings, including redacted bank records which the GOP claims will reveal millions of dollars in payment to Hunter Biden from Russian and Kazakhstani oligarchs. House Oversight says they believe they can tie the folks contributing millions to Hunter's businesses abroad to President Biden himself. Congressman Pat Fallon (R-TX) argues there is a concerning pattern with Hunter Biden's business dealings and says he believes eventually the evidence will uncover a massive political scandal. On the Rundown, Rep. Fallon explains what Hunter Biden's bank documents reveal, the Democrats' response to them, and the continued search for a smoking gun in this investigation. Earlier this week, voters in an Ohio special election rejected a measure that would have made it more difficult to change the state's constitution. The current system required a simple majority to make amendments; however, the defeated GOP-backed measure had proposed raising the threshold to a 60 percent supermajority. Many pundits and pro-choice activists warned that if passed, this would severely curtail Ohioans' ability to pass the abortion rights amendment scheduled for a state ballot initiative in November. While the vote is still months away, this sets the stage for Ohio voters to codify abortion rights. On the podcast, Kyle Kondik, Managing Editor at Sabato's Crystal Ball, breaks down why this special election was indirectly a vote on abortion rights, why this Republican-backed measure was defeated, and how this will affect Ohioans on the November ballot. Plus, commentary by former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week marked significant changes for Senate Democrats. On Tuesday, incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock won re-election in Georgia, giving Democrats a larger Senate majority with 51 seats. Meanwhile, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced she would be leaving the Democratic party and registering as an Independent. The news will not change the Senate makeup as she does not intend to caucus with Republicans. Managing Editor at Sabato's Crystal Ball, University of Virginia Center for Politics, Kyle Kondik shares why Georgia's Senate race was so significant, what the Democrats' expanded majority means for the next two years, and whether or not it will impact the likelihood of major legislative accomplishments. The Head of the Commodity Future Tradings Commission Rostin Behnam told Senators at the Senate Agriculture Committee Hearing he has no direct authority to regulate cash digital commodity markets, which is arguably the reason that cryptocurrency company FTX collapsed last month. Senators have taken it upon themselves to propose the Lummis-Gillibrand Responsible Financial Innovation Act, in hopes to fix this absence of regulation. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) details the content of her bill, states that she believes there will be major consequences for principles at FTX as well as Sam Bankman-Fried, and agrees that this collapse could have been avoided.
