#FactsMatter, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan podcast
This episode of the #FactsMatter focuses on Michigan's 2026 budget season, with Guy Gordon interviewing the Research Council's Craig Thiel and Bob Schneider. All three major budget proposals—the Governor's, House's, and Senate's—are now public, making this year's process smoother than last year's. Schools and local governments benefit from early budget clarity. All three FY2027 School Aid budget proposals align on a 2.5% increase in the foundation allowance, bringing per‑pupil funding to roughly $10,300. At‑risk funding continues to grow, though the chambers differ sharply: the Governor proposes a 6% increase, the House 5%, and the Senate a dramatic 25% bump, which Craig describes as “a major revenue stream” for districts with high poverty rates. The Legislature has rejected the Governor's plan to shift $400 million from the School Aid Fund to higher education, though this could re‑emerge in negotiations. On the General Fund side of the budget proposals, Bob reports modest revenue growth—“better up than down”—but not enough to ease structural pressures. The House proposes deep cuts to university operations, including a $421 million reduction to U‑M and MSU, while the Governor's proposed new revenues have been dismissed by both chambers. All three budgets create shortfalls heading into FY28, meaning more cuts or revenue changes will be required next year. Despite tensions, there is agreement among the three proposals on several items: funding for universal school meals, continued mental health and school safety grants, and the foundation allowance. The biggest risks ahead include unresolved General Fund gaps, higher‑ed funding battles, and the possibility that K–12 dollars could again be eyed to plug holes elsewhere.
I've been inside the Minnesota Capitol during final week four times now.I've watched the clock run out. And I've seen something most people miss: the outrage over omnibus bills and back room deals is justified — but the focus is on the wrong thing.Senators Eric Lucero and Michael Holmstrom called it a failure this week: over 1,100 pages of spending and regulations, rammed through in hours, with no time to read before voting. They're right about the outcome. But the cause isn't bad legislators. It's a structural system that makes omnibus bills inevitable. In this video, I walk through the many structural forces that produce this result every single session: hard constitutional deadlines, committee chairs with centralized power, caucus discipline that pressures members to fall in line, and House-Senate brinkmanship that incentivizes waiting until the last minute.Once you see these dynamics, you can't unsee them. And the fix? It's not better people. It's a fundamentally different structure — likely including constitutional changes that most of the people complaining about the current system might resist.0:00 - The outrage nobody explains3:48 - Force 1: The Pressure Cooker5:15 - Force 2: Committee Chairs Ultimate Power6:58 - Force 3: Caucus Discipline 8:37 - Force 4: House vs. Senate Brinkmanship10:27 - Force 5: Tied House12:12 - What Reform Would Actually Require15:39 - It's Not Corruption; It's Structure#WalterHudson #MinnesotaPolitics #MNLeg #ClosingArgument #OmnibusBill #MinnesotaLegislature #legislativereform https://x.com/WalterHudson⬇️ Watch, think critically, and decide for yourself.

Senate Republicans had pushed just last week to add up to $15B in aid, but that language was left out. With aid excluded for now, supporters say relief may need to come via supplemental appropriations or future legislation.Congress must pass the funding package by January 30 to avoid another government shutdown. It was also reported yesterday that nationwide E15 language was again dropped, though GOP leaders are discussing a possible supplemental bill that could allow year-round E15 sales.Major Winter Storm RiskA major winter storm is forecast to impact the Southern US this weekend. While the exact track remains uncertain, over 70 million people from Dallas to Little Rock to Nashville are currently under a winter storm watch.Snow, ice, dangerous travel conditions, and power outages are possible. Snow cover remains limited across key HRW wheat areas in the Southern Plains. Temperatures in western Kansas and surrounding regions could fall into the single digits, raising the risk of winter kill depending on snow totals and duration. Livestock stress is also a concern.US–China Trade WatchUS and Chinese officials may soon hold another round of trade talks ahead of the planned April meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.According to the US Trade Representative, negotiations would focus on common goods and services, avoiding sensitive areas like tech and national security.China has already fulfilled its commitment to purchase 12 mmt of US soybeans. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both sides are now looking ahead to China's pledge to buy 25 mmt annually through 2028, though Trump continues to push for larger volumes.Europe, Greenland & TariffsPresident Trump announced he will refrain from imposing new tariffs on European countries, following meetings at the World Economic Forum. He stated that a framework for a future deal involving Greenland has been reached, marking a major shift from prior tariff threats. While details remain limited, Denmark continues to oppose any US takeover.Grain Market RecapSoybean futures rebounded Wednesday, with the most-active Mar26 contract gaining roughly 12 cents, settling near $10.65.Support came from a slow start to Brazil's soybean harvest due to rainfall in northern regions, along with comments from Treasury Secretary Bessent pointing to ongoing Chinese demand for US soybeans.Global Protein TradeChina has reopened its market to Canadian beef imports, ending a ban that had been in place since 2021. Initial shipments are expected to be small, but the move is a positive long-term opportunity for Canada's cattle industry.Meanwhile, US beef exports to China have declined sharply over the past year amid ongoing trade tensions.India & Wheat ExportsIndia has approved the export of 500,000 tons of wheat flour and related products. Wheat exports had been restricted since May 2022, but a strong monsoon is expected to boost domestic supplies.India is typically self-sufficient in wheat and is sometimes a net exporter. Its re-entry into the export market is considered a bearish factor for global wheat prices.

In this episode of the Jake for the State podcast, host Jake Merrick interviews Oklahoma State Representative Kevin West (R-Moore, House District 54, serving since 2017). Rep. West, a consistent conservative voice in the Oklahoma House, discusses his key legislative priorities for the upcoming session while also campaigning for Oklahoma Labor Commissioner in the 2026 election.Key Legislation DiscussedRep. West highlights two carryover bills from the previous session: Pride Flags on Government Property The bill aims to prohibit the display of Pride flags, BLM flags, and similar symbols on state property (including potential application to schools and municipalities). After committee feedback last year, the approach shifted from listing permitted flags to specifying prohibited ones to avoid complications (e.g., with military/tribal/historical flags at the Capitol). It allows exceptions like MIA/POW or certain approved displays. West notes limited opposition last session compared to prior years and expects smoother passage, with good House-Senate coordination. Franchise Fees on Utility Securitization This addresses the aftermath of the 2021 Winter Storm Uri securitization (spreading massive utility costs over time via bonds). The original legislation unintentionally allowed municipalities (e.g., Oklahoma City) to add franchise fees/taxes on securitized amounts, potentially costing ratepayers $60–100 million extra over 25 years. A court ruling permitted it due to the lack of explicit prohibition. West's bill clarifies that securitization amounts (and future similar mechanisms) are exempt, protecting consumers and aligning with original legislative intent. He criticizes cities for treating it as a "cash cow" and praises the Corporation Commission for initially opposing the fees. Other Topics Property Taxes — West is filing a bill to increase the homestead exemption by $1,000 initially, with potential further reductions (up to ~$4,000 over time) if counties meet financial metrics. He supports broader discussions on replacing lost revenue (e.g., for schools/roads) if initiatives like the homestead elimination petition succeed, emphasizing the need for a replacement plan to avoid service cuts. Run for Labor Commissioner — West explains his candidacy (website: votekevinwest.com), citing his background as a former commercial cabinet maker and small business owner. He wants to prioritize promoting workforce development, expanding apprenticeships (including for 16-year-olds, which he helped pass), workplace safety, and modernizing the department (e.g., online services, consistent enforcement). He opposes extreme minimum wage hikes (e.g., the proposed state question jumping to $15/hour and tying to national inflation), arguing it would hurt small businesses, accelerate automation, reduce hours/benefits, and raise consumer prices. Throughout, West emphasizes conservative principles: keeping money in taxpayers' pockets, local control, transparency, common-sense regulations favoring education over fines, and preparing Oklahoma's workforce (especially trades) for future opportunities like manufacturing resurgence. The episode includes a sponsor shoutout for Modus Health in Yukon and ends with encouragement to support West's campaign and stay engaged with state issues. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (11/18/2025): 3:05pm- The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill that directs the Justice Department to release all the files in its possession related to its investigation into sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The final vote was 427 to 1—with only Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) in opposition. In a post to social media, Higgins explained his decision—citing concern that the bill does not do enough to protect the identities of victims and witnesses. 3:10pm- Private Property Rights Under Threat in the Garden State: New Jersey towns are beginning to push back against the state's affordable housing obligations. The ambitious quotas are trampling property rights—and, as Rich notes, high density housing will almost certainly lead to more Democrat voters moving to NJ. 3:30pm- On Tuesday, President Donald Trump met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office where Saudi Arabia pledged to invest $1 trillion in the United States economy. During a contentious moment, ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce asked about the September 11th terror attacks and the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. 4:00pm- According to reporting from Robert Jimison of The New York Times, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he believes the Epstein bill will be voted on in the Senate quickly, without any amendments. He explained, “when a bill passes 427 to 1, and the president says he'll sign it into law, I'm not sure there's going to be a need or desire for an amendment process.” 4:15pm- While speaking with the press, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was asked why Democrats didn't release the Epstein files when they were in power. Meanwhile, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) said Schumer should be replaced as leader—suggesting Chris Murphy, Cory Booker, Brian Schatz, and Elizabeth Warren would be better suited for the position. 4:30pm- While speaking at a Turning Point USA event, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. questioned why there has been a sudden uptick in food allergies over the last 30 to 40 years. “There's a different view of what could be happening in this country. We need to figure out what's causing it and eliminate it.” He continued: “Five of my seven children have allergies. What happened? Something happened. And it appears to have happened sometime around 1990…So, you have to look at an environmental toxin.” 5:00pm- Corey DeAngelis—Senior Fellow at the American Culture Project & Author of the book, “The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools.”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial for The Washington Times, “Dismantle the Teachers Union Cartel.” DeAngelis also discusses American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten protesting alongside Starbucks baristas. She already ruined public schools, is she going to ruin coffee next? Plus, the Trump administration is taking further steps to reduce the size and scope of the Department of Education. 5:30pm- BREAKING NEWS: The Senate has passed the Epstein Transparency Act. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer requested that the Senate pass the bill with unanimous consent—no Senator objected and the bill will now head to President Donald Trump's desk to sign. 6:05pm- Will President Donald Trump sign the Epstein Transparency Act later tonight? If signed into law, the bill requires the Department of Justice to make public all unclassified records and investigative materials relating to Jeffrey Epstein no later than 30 days after the date of enactment. 6:15pm- On Monday night, President Donald Trump was the keynote speaker at the McDonald's Impact Summitt—joking that he loves the Filet-o-Fish sandwich but that it often needs more tartar sauce! He also bragged about getting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to eat a Big Mac while on the campaign trail. 6:20pm- According to reports, President Trump's typical order at McDonald's is: Big Ma ...

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: 4:05pm- Kimmel is Back: Last week, ABC/Disney indefinitely suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live”—following Kimmel's comments on the killing of Charlie Kirk. The late-night host shamefully accused Republicans of using the death to “score political points.” While the network's move appeared to be a result of Kimmel's comments coupled with poor ratings, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr suggested his department could potentially investigate ABC/Disney over Kimmel's vitriolic remarks—muddying the waters. Many expressed concern that Carr's warning amounted to a First Amendment violation. ABC/Disney is now announcing that the suspension has concluded, and Kimmel will be back on-air Tuesday night. Rich notes that if Carr had not opened his mouth and baselessly threatened ABC/Disney, Kimmel's show would have likely ended permanently. Did Carr inadvertently save Kimmel's career? 4:20pm- Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked President Trump: “If you could eat only one thing for a week, what would it be?” Trump responded, “probably steak.” 4:40pm- Joe Gruters—Chairman of the Republican National Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show for his first interview since becoming RNC Chair last month! He discusses his experience as a Florida State Senator, November's New Jersey gubernatorial election, and more. Chairman Gruters explains, “I'm committed to do whatever it takes to make sure we give the President a full four years [with a Republican-controlled House & Senate]” so “he continues to save the world.”
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (09/22/2025): 3:05pm- According to new data from CNN's Harry Enten, despite Donald Trump's personally low approval ratings, Republicans still possess massive polling advantages on three key issues: the economy, immigration, and crime. Enten joked that the Democrats have become the New Orlean Saints of political parties—which bodes poorly for the party's hopes of taking the House of Representatives and/or Senate in 2026. 3:10pm- On Sunday, Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill held their first NJ Gubernatorial debate at Rider University. During one notable moment, Sherrill refused to pledge that she wouldn't raise taxes on New Jersey citizens. One new poll now has Ciattarelli leading by 1-point. 3:30pm- During Sunday's debate, Mikie Sherrill attempted to explain why she voted in favor of a bipartisan House resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk—but publicly denounced Kirk, lying about his past comments and baselessly claiming he wanted to” roll back the rights of women and Black people.” Sherrill was unable to answer when confronted with her inconsistencies and falsehoods. 3:40pm- On Sunday, a memorial service for Charlie Kirk was held in Glendale, Arizona—with 73,000 inside of State Farm Stadium and an estimated 200,000 people in total showing up to the event. In a powerful moment during the ceremony, Erika Kirk said she forgives her husband's accused killer. 3:50pm- During her Monday briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Donald Trump plans to sign an Executive Order designating Antifa as a terrorist organization. 4:05pm- Kimmel is Back: Last week, ABC/Disney indefinitely suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live”—following Kimmel's comments on the killing of Charlie Kirk. Kennedy Jr., FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, & NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya—delivered remarks on Autism research which may link between acetaminophen usage during pregnancy to the condition. 5:30pm- Matt Rooney— Founder of SaveJersey.com, State Director of the America First Policy Institute of New Jersey, & host of The Matt Rooney Show on 1210 WPHT (Saturday's 7pm to 10pm)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap Sunday night's NJ gubernatorial debate between Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill. 5:55pm- Tom Azelby hosts the 6pm Hour of The Rich Zeoli Show!

Can this House & Senate cut spending now that they've passed the Big Beautiful Bill? Rep. Jason Smith says that's a priority, and rescissions is the way to do it. If only the Senate will get on board.
Truth Be Told with Booker Scott – I examine how the House and Senate clash over Trump's flagship tax cut extension, splitting border security and permanence in competing bills. After a narrow 215-214 House approval, the ‘Big Beautiful Bill' moves to the Senate, where partisan amendments reshape spending cuts and the debt ceiling. I explore the looming battle as senators and representatives brace for renewed legislative handoffs.

Advocating isn't new for Elizabeth, who is speaking out for reform and justice in the court systems. Elizabeth has co-authored legislation and is working with Ohio lawmakers to try and make things better for Ohio's families. Living close to Columbus, Elizabeth went to the State House and started meeting with lawmakers. Starting five years ago with her first co-authored bill which was well received, as there were 61 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. It was very popular, however it caught the judiciary and the Bar Association by surprise. They retaliated by creating their own bill and Elizabeth has been battling them to this day. Liz also got two bills passed that were "equal parenting" bills (200 pages). The judges and the Bar successfully blocked both of them. At taxpayer expense, the Judge's then wrote their own bill (SB174), 400 pages long. Three years ago the Ohio Judicial Conference sent Elizabeth a copy of this bill that was introduced in the senate by two family law attorneys on behalf of the judges. The main judge, Judge Denise McColley, mother of Senate President Robert Mc Colley, who successfully blocked Elizabeth's bill and pitched his mother's bill at the same time. He got two family law attorneys to pick it up and it has gathered momentum. The judges support it. It was a counter bill to what Elizabeth was trying to do with her bill. Essentially SB174 wants to take away Parental Rights. As members of the Biden administration wrap up their duties ahead of next month's transition, the Office of Management and Budget's IT office is touting the “innovative” technological progress it's made over the past four years in the face of “unprecedented challenges.” In an impact report shared exclusively with FedScoop, OMB's Office of the Federal Chief Information Officer highlighted several of its tech-focused accomplishments throughout President Joe Biden's time in office, pointing specifically to work in artificial intelligence, open data, cybersecurity and quantum, all in service of further modernizing the federal government. Lawmakers in the House and Senate introduced a bipartisan bill Wednesday that would create an advisory panel aimed at developing a national strategy for technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. Under the United States Leadership in Immersive Technology Act, the Department of Commerce would be directed to establish such a panel that would advise the president on how to use those technologies, known collectively as immersive technologies or XR, for commerce, trade and economic competitiveness. That panel would also study XR and its impact on national security, according to a release from sponsor Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., announcing the bill. Cannabis reform always feels like it's on the verge of a breakthrough with policy. We know some policies can pass both the House & Senate yet it doesn't , but it ends up feeling like a pawn in the horse trading by policymakers who all know that ~70% of Americans are in favor of cannabis legalization. A fight over whether women should be required to register for a potential draft has been revived in Congress. Last year, Congress appeared on the precipice of making women register with what's formally called the Selective Service System, but the idea was dropped from the defense policy bill signed into law after closed-door House-Senate negotiations despite having bipartisan support. Now, the proposal is back in the version of the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, making its way through the Senate, and conservatives are again vowing a fierce fight against what they refer to as "drafting our daughters."You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube.
