Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC chief executive Mark Learmonth talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's strong first-quarter performance, driven by a rise in both gold production and gold prices. Learmonth highlighted that Caledonia sold approximately 19,000 ounces of gold in the quarter, up from 17,500 ounces in Q1 2024, and achieved a gold price of just under $2,900 per ounce. This led to gross profit nearly doubling from $14 million to $27 million, and earnings per share increasing from $0.07 to $0.45. The company is investing $41 million in capital expenditure this year, with $34 million allocated to sustaining operations at the Blanket mine. Projects include a new tailings facility, underground development to improve flexibility, and engineering upgrades for efficiency, such as converting the main winder to lower power consumption. Learmonth stated, “To some extent, we're using the higher gold price to invest for the extended life of mine and to build in more and more efficiency and robustness.” On safety, changes in senior personnel have led to visible management presence underground and proactive incident prevention strategies. Updates were also provided on Bilboes and Motapa, where Caledonia is revisiting feasibility approaches, continuing exploration, and exploring small-scale, high-return opportunities. Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC chief executive Mark Learmonth talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about a record first quarter for gold production at the company's Blanket Mine. Learmonth attributed the strong operational performance to significant management changes and the restructuring of the mine's operations, which split underground and surface responsibilities. “We've got a new, younger, more energetic management team underground... and it's worked beautifully,” Learmonth noted, highlighting the benefits of recent personnel shifts and structural reforms. The conversation also covered the recent $22.35 million sale of Caledonia's solar power plant in Zimbabwe. While the asset has been sold, Learmonth said the company retains a long-term power supply agreement and the option to participate in a second phase, if viable. He clarified the decision allows Caledonia to concentrate more on its core gold mining business. Looking ahead, Learmonth said the company remains focused on maximising gold production while intensifying efforts to reduce long-term costs. “At this gold price, with production strong, we want to get that gold out the ground... with increasing attention now to more management focus on getting those costs down,” he said. Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC (AIM:CMCL, NYSE-A:CMCL) chief executive Mark Learmonth talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's strong 2024 financial performance and strategic priorities following the release of its latest results. Learmonth reported a “strong end to a reasonably good year,” with annual gold production reaching approximately 78,000 ounces—within guidance—supported by favourable pricing. He highlighted that “gross profit for the year was 77 million, compared to 41 million last year,” with adjusted earnings per share rising sharply from less than $0.10 in 2023 to nearly $1.30 in 2024. The results were delayed due to a technical accounting issue, with Learmonth explaining this stemmed from a deferred tax calculation error dating back to 2019. He stressed it had “no impact on our actual tax liabilities and tax payments.” On project development, the feasibility study for the Bilboes project has been extended to evaluate options that could significantly reduce capital costs. These include the potential to export concentrate and relocate the tailings facility, potentially lowering upfront investment needs. Exploration at both Blanket and Motapa returned positive results. Learmonth noted that the Blanket resource base has been extended, and early work at Motapa uncovered “exciting mineralisation” in new areas. With gold prices currently above $3,000 per ounce, the company is focused on maximising cash flow and investing further in Blanket and other revenue-generating opportunities. Under other circumstances, last week's announcement about the launch of another awards show in the sports betting and gaming industry would induce a shaking of the eyes and a scratching of the scalp. After all this is an industry which throws out awards like promises during election campaigns. But. . . when WagerWire co-founder Travis Geiger and gambling startups insider Jesse Learmonth (the man behind the Betting Startups podcast, which your humble host at The Parleh co-founder/CEO Mark Silver appeared way back in December 2021) got together with an idea to recognize the efforts of new businesses in the business of gambling, we thought “OK, tell us more.” So, Geiger and Learmonth were our guests on the latest episode of the Gaming News Canada Show presented by GBG Plc. to walk us through their raison d'etre for The Starties, which will make their debut at next month's NEXT.io Summit New York. Learmonth and Geiger presented the back story behind the awards, which has a presenting sponsor in Eberg Capital and additional backing from Defy the Odds, Optimove Ignite+ and Sportradar Futures Hub. Goodburn highlighted a notable increase in revenue, driven by higher gold prices and increased production at the Blanket Mine. The company generated $12.8 million in cash on a net basis, demonstrating significant financial improvement. Learmonth provided insights into the company's operations at the Blanket Mine, where production exceeded targets, leading to a substantial resource upgrade. He also discussed the Bilboes project, which he described as "a very strong project" with 2.5 million ounces of reserves and resources. The project is expected to produce about 1.5 million ounces over a ten-year life of mine with a very low all-in-sustaining cost. Learmonth emphasised the ongoing efforts to upgrade the Bilboes Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) to a feasibility study by the first quarter of next year. The company is also also confident about securing debt funding for the project, thanks to its short payback period and cash-generative nature. For more videos, visit Proactive's YouTube channel. Guy has had a very successful career so far, with a PB of 1.44.70, competing in the Commonwealth Games, multiple World Championships and in fact the 3rd fastest 800m time in Scottish history. However, it's safe to say that Guy has been a bit unlucky throughout his career. In a sport like running, you would expect the selection criteria to be black and white, however, in this episode, you will learn how this isn't always the case, and how politics and behind the scenes agendas are the determining factors in some cases. Guy explains how he has unfortunately missed out on selection for numerous British teams and championships, despite having met the qualification criteria. He has publicly accused British Athletics of "toxicity and nepotism", saying their decisions have been "absolute nonsense". Fergus and Guy cover many topics, including his upbringing and what got him into athletics, what it's like competing on the biggest stage in his sport, the life of a pro athlete, recovery, the rise of technology in running, his current issues with athletics, and much much more. Expect to learn what it takes to be a professional athlete. Expect to reflect on how you deal with setbacks. Expect to question the agenda of some sporting federations. Caledonia Mining Corporation chief executive Mark Learmonth joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with an update on the company's Bilboes gold project in Zimbabwe. Acquired in January 2023, the Bilboes assets have been under evaluation for the most effective commercialization strategy. The company has decided on a single-step development approach, projected to achieve an average annual production of 150,000 ounces of gold, peaking at nearly 200,000 ounces initially. This method offers the best increase in net present value (NPV) per share, estimated at over $300 million at a gold price of $1,884 and a 10% discount rate. The single-phase approach requires peak funding of approximately $300 million, which coincidentally matches the NPV. Alternative phased approaches were deemed less favourable due to higher relative costs and reduced debt funding capacity. Learmonth emphasized the project's significant potential, noting that higher gold prices and lower discount rates could increase the project's value to nearly $1 billion. The next steps include upgrading the current work to a feasibility study, with particular focus on the tailings facility, the largest capital expenditure component. This process, leveraging experience from the Blanket mine, aims to optimise costs through modular construction. Additionally, the company has engaged an advisor to explore debt financing options. These parallel processes are expected to continue into early next year, with feasibility studies and financing efforts progressing concurrently. #CaledoniaMining #GoldProject #MiningIndustry #BilboesGold #GoldProduction #Investment #MiningNews #MarkLearmonth #GoldMarket #NPV #FeasibilityStudy #DebtFinancing #TailingsFacility #ModularConstruction #GoldPrices #MiningUpdates #CapitalExpenditure #ProjectDevelopment #EconomicGrowth #MiningCEO #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC (AIM:CMCL, NYSE-A:CMCL) chief executive Mark Learmonth tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion the company faced a challenging 2023, primarily due to poor production in the first half of the year at its core asset, the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe, and an underperformance in a small-scale oxide project. However, the latter half of the year saw substantial improvement in Blanket's production. The company also encountered increased costs, notably in labour and electricity, along with one-off administrative expenses, which have been addressed. To mitigate labour costs, Caledonia initiated more efficient timing systems for workforce management, particularly for their new, larger, and lighter shaft operations. For electricity, the company plans to reduce consumption and has already made strides by substituting diesel usage with a solar project. Due to improving cash flows, Learmonth said Caledonia maintained its quarterly dividend at 14 cents. The underground exploration program at Blanket resumed last January, showing promising drill results that led to extending the mine's life considerably, from 2034 to 2041. Learmonth said this extension will be further supported by an upcoming new resource statement. Moreover, Caledonia is progressing with an updated feasibility study on the Bilboes sulphide project, aiming to publish it in the coming months. #CaledoniaMining #MiningIndustry #ZimbabweMining #BlanketMine #UndergroundExploration #MiningChallenges #DividendAnnouncement #MiningCosts #RenewableEnergyMining #MiningFeasibilityStudy #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC (AIM:CMCL, NYSE-A:CMCL) CEO Mark Learmonth speaks to Thomas Warner from Proactive London after the Zimbabwe-focused gold producer released an update on production at its Blanket Gold Mine for calendar year 2023. Learmonth explains that Caledonia managed to meet its guidance for the year despite a very challenging start to the period. For 2024, the company anticipates a slightly lower production of 74,000-78,000 ounces, due to strategic decisions to suspend mining in certain lower-grade areas. Learmonth emphasises the company's ongoing shift towards more efficient mining practices, facilitated by the newly operational central shaft. This transition includes phasing out older, less efficient infrastructure in favour of the central shaft operations. The aim is to optimise mining for profitability rather than mere volume. He goes on to say that exploration remains a key focus for Caledonia Mining. The company began extensive exploration activities at the Blanket Mine in early 2023, following the commissioning of the central shaft. This has allowed for increased logistical capacity and facilitation of underground exploration. Learmonth anticipates releasing new drilling results soon, which are expected to enhance the mine's lifespan through improved tonnage and grade. The exploration efforts are primarily concentrated on existing areas to upgrade inferred resources to higher confidence levels. Future exploration will also target new mineralised zones near the Blanket Mine. Lastly, Learmonth touches upon the feasibility study for Bilboes, mentioning that the company is updating the existing study and exploring an alternative, smaller-scale approach. He suggests this phase of work is vital for determining the most beneficial path forward for the company and its shareholders. #CaledoniaMining #MarkLearmonth #MiningIndustry #GoldMining #MiningExploration #2023MiningUpdate #2024MiningOutlook #GoldProduction #MiningEfficiency #MiningStrategy #BlanketMine #MiningOperations #GoldMarket #MiningTechnology #ResourceManagement #MiningInvestment #MiningSector #ExplorationActivities #MiningEconomics #MiningTrends #ProactiveInvestors #gold #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

In this episode, we chat to Mark Learmonth, CEO, and Director of Caledonia Mining who is a profitable cash-generative gold producer with a strong growth profile, with their primary asset, the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe. Mark has a finance and investment background. He joined the company back in 2008 and talks about his journey with Caledonia Mining, what they have been upto including their central shaft project and their Bilboes project, and why Zimbabwe is a great place to invest in mining. KEY TAKEAWAYS Caledonia Mining had to grow slowly. Initially, it only had access to the cash they made; there were virtually no 3rd party investors. Drilling the central shaft has transformed the company's profitability. The workforce in Zimbabwe is very high quality, so there is no need to hire expensive expat staff. They are now producing around 80,000 ounces per year. Currently, they are diversifying and becoming a multi-asset producer. Focusing on Zimbabwe is the plan. They know the jurisdiction well, the workforce is good and the geology is very sound. The fact that Zimbabwe has very high inflation barely impacts the business. Why is explained, in the podcast. Caledonia Mining are building a 12 megawatt solar project, which will save around $3 million per annum. Last year, Caledonia acquired a million ounce resource for $4 million. A few weeks ago, they acquired a nearly 2.5 million ounce asset. With grades of about 2.25 grams per tonne. With the extra cash flow, growth will be faster from now on. BEST MOMENTS ‘I learned the importance of really rigorous cash flow management and paying close attention to investment programs. ´ ‘There's a lot of gold in Zimbabwe, the country has never been properly explored.' ‘The mine has been operating for nearly 100 years. Over that time a sophisticated infrastructure had developed, which we have enhanced.' They say there can only be one Highlander, but that's not true. The Scottish Highlands are a land rich with history, culture and community -- all of which was almost lost when it was systematically stripped away (and they were stripped away from their land) during the Highland Clearances. Actor, producer, entrepreneur and all-around amazing storyteller, Adam Robertson, joins us this week to weave a tale as rich as the lives the highlanders led before the clearances...and surfing...we also talk about surfing a lot. 'The Last of the Clan' by Thomas Faed Ruined crofts in the highlands 1, 2, 3, 4 Govt member reads the Riot Act to angry crofters at Aignish Farm A modern interpretation of an 1800s Newspaper, featuring lawyer and 'improver' Patrick Sellar Map depicting areas affected by the Highland Clearances The Duke of Sutherland Statue on Ben Bhraggie More on Adam: An experienced actor who has also produced film and theatre at a commercial level. In addition to his work in the creative sector Adam has managed several businesses over the years incl. co-founding Western Edge Pictures, a street food business in London and a restaurant in South Wales. Since 2016 He has been the lead facilitator for the charity Street Cones developing and delivering creative projects in Scottish prisons, with young offenders and other marginalised groups and has directed many short films using lived experience individuals. Including 'Something To Lose' and most recently 'A Heavy Price' a film looking at the myths vs realities of prison life.
