“Oh... as I hold this cold meat, I'm reminded of Winston. God rest his soul.” We watched “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) with MTMUG All Star Joshua Clement and we don't do laundry, we don't do windows and we DON'T do diapers. Listen, it's been 30 years since this family comedy was released and our ideas about gender identity and expression have come a long way. That being said, we firmly believe Robin Williams did not have a malicious bone in his body or thought in his heart when he committed Euphegenia Doubtfire to film. The queer sensibilities are rife throughout Daniel Hillard's (Williams) journey to become the matronly Mrs. Doubtfire in order to spend more time with his kids. From his gay brother Frank, played by icon Harvey Fierstein, to Robin's manic (and still hilarious) performance channeling Mrs. Doubtfire. As time goes by, we are finding ourselves understanding Miranda (Sally Field) a bit more - that pony was INSIDE the house! Don't get us started on Pierce Brosnan serving up body in the pool scene - we'll be rewinding that one, thank you very much.  We also love (and grew up with) the Hillard children played by Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence and little bitty Mara Wilson.  This cast is perfect, the jokes still hold up and Robin, as always, serves up a master class in comedy.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Tune in as Patrick (Vintage Video) hangs out with Arthur for a discussion on Mrs. Doubtfire, the 1993 family comedy (or thriller, depending on how you look at it) starring Robin Williams as a dad who's going through a divorce and just wants to spend more time with his kids. So what does he do? Why, he disguises himself as an elderly British woman and finagles his way into becoming their nanny. Yep, nothing major. Transphobic gags being juggled alongside some surprisingly positive facets of queer rep, questioning whether or not the movie truly understands how allergies work, and its progressive perspective on divorce are a few of the talking points that come up on this episode. Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone), Mrs. Doubtfire stars Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence, Mara Wilson, Robert Prosky, Anne Haney, Harvey Fierstein, Scott Capurro, Martin Mull, and Polly Holliday. Spoilers start at 23:15 Good Word: • Patrick: 1995's Jumanji • Arthur: Gone Girl (specifically the movie, although Gillian Flynn's novel is top-notch, too) Reach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello! It's the hilarious, smash hit family comedy... about a bitter divorce! The late, great Robin Williams was at the top of his game in 1993, and "Mrs. Doubtfire" let the comic actor run amok even when not dressing up like an old lady. Seriously, his character here, Daniel Hillard, is pretty unhinged, and it kinda makes sense that he loses custody of his kids. He's lucky he's not in jail for poisoning Pierce Brosnan! (To be fair, who the hell do you think you are ordering a jambalaya without pepper?! It's a Cajun dish, Pierce, what the hell is the point?) Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela both watched "Mrs. Doubtfire" a bunch as kids, as they both came from Robin Williams-loving homes. So were they nervous about revisiting the film and finding a whole bunch of outdated and insensitive jokes? You bet! Luckily, the movie largely avoids any questions about gender and sexuality (with the exception of that creepy bus driver who keeps hitting on Mrs. Doubtfire), and keeps things simple: Daniel is lying to his kids and pretending to be an old woman because he loves being around them so much! Nothing wrong with that, right? Right?! Right?!!?!!? Let's make one thing clear: This movie is still pretty watchable, thanks to some genuinely terrific comedic riffing by Williams, as well as the surprisingly sensitive and believable depiction of divorce (thanks mostly to an excellent Sally Field performance). Heck even these three kids are likeable  - Lisa Jakub, Matthew "Not the 'Whoa' Lawrence" Lawrence and adorable Mara Wilson in her screen debut. Even new beau Pierce Brosnan is a nice guy! We kinda bad he's a victim of a run-by fruiting! So get your frosting facial ingredients together,  sing a song from "Funny Girl," and don't double-book yourself and you alter ego at the same time at the same place, dummy. Also try to figure out why local TV producer Robert Prosky decides to replace his soft-spoken kids show host with... another soft spoken kids show host!? Is Euphegenia Doubtfire really more interesting than that dinosaur guy?! Wait, Mrs. Doubtfire's first name is EUPHEGENIA?! If you recognize her face or name, it could be for a plethora of reasons. The accomplished author, mental-wellness advocate, speaker, podcast host, and yoga instructor is known for normalizing mental health by telling her story. She also acted for 18 years, starting at the age of 4 and bowing out of show-biz altogether at 22. To see Lisa Jakub as Lydia Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire or Alicia Casse in Independence Day, you would never suspect that she has been dealing with panic attacks, anxiety, and depression since the age of 11. That's why she stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight and chose to shine light on her own mental health – she wanted to show others who struggle with mental illness that it's okay to be vulnerable and not feel ashamed of their diagnosis. In other words, it's okay to be “weird.” In this episode of “Mental Health Matters,” Lisa Jakub and Executive Director Tom Duff, LCSW talk about why Lisa “wouldn't be me without the anxiety.” And why, even though mental health and mental illnesses present challenges, they can also create great successes. As someone whose story is familiar to an estimated 16 million people in the U.S. who “struggle with depression – and I include myself in that statistic,” Lisa knows that mental health is “real, and it's not shameful, and there is help available. You can bring it to the light, you can tell the truth, you can go to a meeting, you can reach out to a friend. None of us are alone.” So go ahead…embrace your “weird.”

What if you were a child actor with more than forty film and television credits to your name and had starred alongside A-list celebrities, such as Will Smith and the late, great, Robin Williams? Lisa Jakub, author, therapeutically focused yoga teacher and mental wellness educator, left Hollywood for Virginia when she was twenty-two, hoping that it would be the panacea for the awkwardness and insecurities she’d been dealing with since her acting career started at age four. But what would you do if your insecurities moved with you to your new home and you were still finding it hard to leave the house? Would you look for ways to correct the awkwardness that had plagued you for most of your life? Or would you ask for guidance and choose a course that would help you embrace your weird? In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire based on the book of the same name by Anne Fine starring Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Robert Prosky, Matthew Lawrence, Lisa Jakub, and Mara Wilson. The story is about a failing voice actor named Daniel Hilliard who had lost his job and throws a birthday party for his son behind his wife Miranda's back. It ends up with them getting a divorce and Daniel only allowing to see his kids once a week. Wanting to see them more often, he asks his brother, a makeup artist, to help disguise him as a old British house nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire. Meanwhile, an old flame of Miranda named Stuart Dunmire returns to her life and tries to reconnect again. When the movie premiered, it became a massive success making over $441 million dollars out of a $25 million dollar budget receiving decent reviews from critics. Roger Ebert claimed that it was similar to Tootsie, but nowhere near as clever or as realistic. It currently has a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite a lot of people loving it. What do Arun and Patricia think of the movie? Does it hold up over 25 years later? The 48 Hour Challenge is back! We gathered show topic suggestions from our audience, threw them into a word randomizer, and ended up with “self-acceptance”. From there, our challenge was to research, write, and record a brand new episode in 48 hours straight (including sleep). Did we do it? Well, give it a listen and find out.   Along the way we talk to clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Firestone and author & speaker Lisa Jakub. Both of whom help us to understand why self-acceptance can be challenging, what the rewards of doing the work are, and most importantly what are some tangible things you can put in practice today to get back to a life of more self-acceptance and less critical self-consciousness.   Plus, a new WTSdigs, where Nick also provides a musical solution. Lisa Jakub is one of those people that we all look at and say, “She’s got it all figured out,” even though she would argue that fact. Her journey of self-discovery truly began after she decided to leave the Hollywood spotlight where she starred in such movies as Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day to focus on who she is and what she wants. Now, after discovering her true passion as a writer, she has released two books. The first, You Look Like That Girl: A Child Actor Stops Pretending and Finally Grows Up which covers her life as an actress and her decision to leave that life behind, and her second, Not Just Me: Anxiety, Depression, and Learning to Embrace Your Weird in which she welcomes us to explore intimate details of her heart and mind to help better understand those who deal with anxiety, depression and all the taboos that surround the subject. We also discuss the events of Charlottesville, Virginia where she has lived with her husband for 16 years and was front and centre during the recent terror that occurred there. While her story continues to unfold, she finds solace in being open and honest about who she is and expressing that unapologetically. While she is a multi talented person, her greatest gift is the unconditional love she sends out to the world through her work and life well lived. Today's guest is actor-turned-author Lisa Jakub. If you’ve ever seen Mrs. Doubtfire or the original Independence Day, you’re likely familiar with her early work. I came across Lisa a few years ago on Twitter and she has since completely changed careers. She’s now a writer living thousands of miles away from Hollywood. When I read Lisa’s book, You Look Like That Girl…, in which she details her major life and career shift, I knew I wanted to have her on this segment of the show. You might think the story of an actor-turned-writer would be completely un-relatable, but that couldn’t be further from the truth in this case. In the interview, we chat about how Lisa got into acting at the age of four and how she handled the period of time between leaving Hollywood and where she is today. We also talk about the tools Lisa used to understand how she could view success outside of the world of acting and filmmaking, why she feels it’s important to talk about the difficult times she’s faced over the years and what she’s working on next.
