Todays episode is a deep dive into another piece by Daniel Danger (@tinymediaempire on Instagram) from the August 26, 2033 Dave Matthews Band show in Irvine, CA. We learned a lot about the history that inspired this Danger print. Juana Maria - the Lone Woman of San Nicholas Island, was the last surviving member of the Nicolino tribe. This tribe had inhabited the island for what we believe over 10,000 years. In the late 1800s, she was found living alone on the island with her dogs in 1850. She had been left behind after missionaries came and forcibly removed the native people 20 years prior. This incredible history and story of this woman, is now front and center as a part of the DMB poster lore. Mike and Erica share their perspective on this piece- as well as the musical inspiration (very Don't Drink the Water vibes) on this prolific piece by Daniel Danger.
Would you read this to your child?'Island Of The Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell is a fictional children's novel (loosely based on a real story) of a lone girl living on an island. Karana (12) has to fend for herself after being left behind by her tribe. She must use survival skills to weather through storms, feed herself and stay safe from wild dogs and other animals.I summarised the book as follows. "It's a nice and sad story at the same time. Ultimately it's made for kids so personally it didn't do that much for me. But there are lots of nice themes for kids to dig into and I could see this being a great launching point for fun topics of discussion."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. In 1835, a Native American woman was somehow left behind when her dwindling island tribe was transferred to the California mainland. She would spend the next 18 years living alone in a world of 22 square miles. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the poignant story of the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. We'll also learn about an inebriated elephant and puzzle over an unattainable test score. Intro: As construction began on Scotland’s Forth Bridge, engineers offered a personal demonstration of its cantilever design. In the 1880s, Manhattan's rationalist "Thirteen Club" held a dinner on the 13th of each month to flout superstition. Sources for our feature on the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island: Sara L. 61 miles off the coast of Southern California lies the tiny island of San Nicolas. It's a military island and we aren't supposed to be there, but this week, I'm still feeling pretty anarchist after our time on Tristan da Cunha. I want to tell you the story of Juana Maria, the Lone Woman, who called this island home. Audio for this episode courtesy of Zapsplat.com
