Laura Barger from Yarn/Wire joins the Soundweavers team to chat about what it really means to proceed without a plan, auditioning and integrating new members, and the usefulness of the recording process for musicians. We discuss their collaborative project Be Holding with the poet Ross Gay, composer Tyshawn Sorey, and director Brooke O'Harra, and the first- to twelfth-grade students of Girard College. Laura shares about the ensemble's web series Feedback, in which they focus on the process of making new music. And, we speak about the Yarn/Wire International Institute, a tuition-free program serving both performers and composers. Yarn/Wire is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet (Sae Hashimoto and Russell Greenberg, percussion; Laura Barger and Ning Yu, pianos) dedicated to the promotion of creative, experimental new music. Pianist Julia Den Boer will join as guest artist for the 2021-2022 season. Described by The Brooklyn Rail as “fascinating and exciting, with playing that is precise and full of purpose,” the ensemble is admired globally for the energy and precision it brings to performances of today's most adventurous compositions. Founded in 2005, the ensemble seeks to expand the representation of composers so that it might begin to better reflect our communities and experience new creative potential. Yarn/Wire appears internationally at prominent festivals and venues including the Lincoln Center Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, Rainy Days Festival (Luxembourg), Ultima Festival (Norway), Transit Festival (Belgium), Dublin SoundLab, Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles), Contempuls Festival (Prague), Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York's Miller Theatre at Columbia University, River-to-River Festival, La MaMa Theatre, Festival of New American Music, and London's Barbican Centre. Their numerous commissions include works from composers such as Enno Poppe, Michael Gordon, George Lewis, Ann Cleare, Peter Evans, Alex Mincek, Thomas Meadowcroft, Misato Mochizuki, Sam Pluta, Tyondai Braxton, and Kate Soper. The ensemble enjoys collaborations with genre-bending artists such as Tristan Perich, Ben Vida, Mark Fell, and Sufjan Stevens. Through the Yarn/Wire International Institute and Festival and other educational residencies and outreach programs, Yarn/Wire works to promote not only the present but also the future of new music in the United States. Their ongoing commissioning series, Yarn/Wire/Currents, serves as an incubator for new experimental music. The transcript for this episode can be found here. For more information about Yarn/Wire, please visit their website, Bandcamp, Yarn/Wire Feedback Series, and YouTube (Yarn/Wire International Institute).
Mark Fell is one of my favorite artists – his work is the right mix of comfortable and challenging, and his music is truly as good as his ideas about music! As a result, I end up listening to a lot of his work, from the SND material released by Mille Plateaux to his recent experiments with live musicians. I've also had the chance to speak with – and interview – him in the past (for Cycling '74), so there was already a comfort level there between us. So that should have made for a good conversation… … and it did. We ranged around the idea-space, talking about his history, his latest work, how he gets along with collaboration and how he thinks about time and complexity. We also get some insights into his overall aesthetic (something that is very important to him), and how that affects his composing/arranging practice. Very interesting, and wonderfully insightful. Enjoy the podcast, and learn more about Mark's work on his personal website: http://www.markfell.com/wiki/ . Mark is a huge advocate of technology and getting any edges he can over opponents.....including listening to opposing managers on this podcast! Mark explains how a recent health scare has changed him from (in his own words) a robot to perhaps more human. the curtailment of the Covid-19 interrupted current season ended what was shaping up to be a great season for Lancaster and we chat about how Mark hopes to carry that into the next season....whenever that's going to be! enjoy the podcast!!
PlaguePod returns to take a look at Crack-Ups and Lockdowns, with readings of real-life and fictional breaking points, plus a return to the subject of mental health in weird COVID times with Matt Colquhoun aka Xenogothic. We have Mark Fell joining us to chat from deepest Rotherham with some extremely tidy tracks, and welcome Agnès Gayraud as our guide on a journey into ‘impossible’ French pop.
It is fair to say that Mark Fell is one of Rotherham's most acclaimed musical exports. His work is steeped in the industrial overtones that define the region in the North of England that also includes nearby cities like Sheffield and bands like Human League and Cabaret Voltaire. In particular, this sound artist and producer focusses on fusing together fragments of experimental, minimal music that has political overtones and unsettling, out-of-context atmospheres. He's released albums on Raster-Notion and Editions Mego, is one half of SND and performs at only the most avant-garde of clubs and festivals. This week he serves up some brilliant darkness and carefully deconstructed rhythms that will shake your bones and your brain cells loose. Artists that deal in soot-black synth, electro and post-punk sounds like Human League, Florian Hecker and Depeche Mode all appear, but there are also masterful sidesteps into hip hop, disco, pop from David Guetta, and words from William Burroughs. All these sounds take on hugely different moods and meanings when put together as part of Fell's unique lexicon, and make it a mix full of brilliantly unexpected moments.
Porous Borders: Experimental Music in the Southern Hemisphere
Hello and welcome back to Porous Borders. This is episode 5, the first episode of 2020, and today on the show is an interview with Will Guthrie. If you're not familiar with Will Guthrie's work, he's an Australian percussionist who started out in Melbourne and is based in Nantes in France and he has a lot going on. He's released a huge number of solo percussion and musique concrete recordings and many more collaborations with people like Richard Dawson, Oren Ambarchi, Keith Rowe, Ava Mendoza, and Mark Fell. In 2019 Will released a bunch of great records, a solo tape called Some Nasty on the Indonesian label Hasana Editions, as well as a collaboration with Sam Shalabi, Mark Fell, and Oren Ambarchi called "Oglon Day", and a duo record with Oren Ambarchi called 'Knotting'. In 2018 he also released a split tape with my friend and future podcast guest Gendes on the Noise Bombing label. You'll hear more about that label on next week's episode, which will be out on Tuesday the 7th.Recently, Will has been travelling to Southeast Asia, which is where we met and recorded this interview. Just a quick technical note, you'll hear a bit of popping on Will's mic, which is 100% my bad microphone placement, and not Will's fault at all. I've tried to EQ out the worst of it, but you'll definitely notice it. I really enjoyed this conversation; Will is an incredible musician and a really nice person. Tom Service considers the rise of Sound Art, commonly found in art galleries today, and wonders whether it is a new genre or simply music in an art space? He consults musician and sound artist Mark Fell, finds precedents in Wagner's operas, considers how a 16th-century choral work became a contemporary art installation, and celebrates the American performance artist Laurie Anderson who accidentally had a pop hit with her piece O Superman.
Episode #7: The North The theme for this latest episode is the North. It’s unlikely to have escaped your attention that we’re about to witness a Great Exhibition of the North that’s a once-in-a generation opportunity to celebrate all kinds of northern-ness, and explore what the North actually means in 2018. To help us understand a little more about the special and specific sounds of the North we talk to radio DJ Lauren Laverne about the week of gigs by northern artists she is curating for the Exhibition and artist Mark Fell, who is creating a sound installation at Sage Gateshead made up of northern sounds. We pop-in with poet Degna Stone and folk musicians Bella Hardy and Sarah Hayes as they prepare their performance of new music and spoken word, called Backbone of Our Land. And we find out from Vinyl-o-phile, comedian and general know-it-all Steve Drayton what he considers to be the great albums of the North. Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.
Synth jams in the coal shed, collective escape, drum machine rebellion. The Sheffield-based artist discusses three important albums.
