What are academic competitions, and what are some examples? Why should students consider participating in academic competitions? What do colleges think of them? What are the advantages and disadvantages of participating in these activities? What can we learn from the example of American Mathematics Competitions? Mathematics is one of the fundamental tools for understanding the universe, nothing less than the science and study of quality, structure, space, and change. That doesn't mean, though, that we can't make a contest of it, especially if doing so can uncover a generation's brightest math minds. Amy and Mike invited Vida John to explain all about the American Math Competition. What are five things you will learn in this episode? 1. What is the American Math Competition, and who runs it? 2. How is the AMC scored and what is a good score? 3. Have there been test security issues with the AMC? 4. Who should take the AMC and why? 5. How can students prepare for the AMC? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 4, 2021 is: mettle MET-ul noun Mettle refers to the ability to continue in spite of difficulties. // The contestants proved their mettle by completing the triathlon. See the entry > Examples: "Recently, 23 of Watauga's best math students met virtually to test their mettle against their peers in the annual MathCounts competition—a contest that tasks young mathematicians to tackle challenging math problems in a timed tournament format." — The Blowing Rocket (Blowing Rock, North Carolina), 22 Apr. 2021 Did you know? Originally, mettle was simply a variant spelling of the word metal (which dates to at least the 13th century), and it was used in all of the same senses as its metallic relative. Over time, however, mettle came to be used mainly in figurative senses referring to the quality of someone's character. It eventually became a distinct English word in its own right, losing its literal sense altogether. Metal remained a term primarily used for those hard, shiny substances such as steel or iron, but it also acquired a figurative use. Today, both words can mean "vigor and strength of spirit or temperament," but only metal is used of metallic substances.

Math is fundamental to engineering education and other disciplines. That's part of why Richard Rusczyk wants to teach kids harder math than they often see in school. As the CEO of Art of Problem Solving, he wants to challenge more young people mathematically, hopefully giving them an earlier chance to achieve math mastery. He talks about national math competition culture compared to sports culture, starting his online education company, and strategies to improve access to deeper math education in K-12.
