What a treat to introduce you to my friend, a person who has poured encouragement and support and wisdom into me, Carrie De Francisco. Carrie is a mom to 2 homeschool graduates, she is a treasured voice in the home school community through her podcast, her books, her speaking engagements and her amazing videos on Instagram. She also provides encouragement for the moms of differently abled learners and especially for moms of dyslexic learners. The bottom line is Carrie will encourage you today, wherever you are on your home school journey. This episode is full of a lot of helpful and practical tips for families that are home schooling dyslexic learners. Here they are: *Have your child teach someone else something, or explain something they love *Spend way more time on your child's gifts and talents than on the things they're struggling with! *Use the dyslexic font for your computer *Use speech to text because it is not cheating! *Have your child read aloud the paragraph they wrote using speech to text and then help them edit as they read it aloud *Use Grammarly –its your writing tutor! *Use audio books (Audible, Hoopla, Libby are 3 great ones!) *This article breaks down a bunch of audio book options. Read it here. *Math U See is Carrie's favorite math curriculum *Use colored markers, drawings or symbols to help them differentiate the words they're learning and/or memorizing. Places to find Carrie: Her website here Her podcast here Her books here here and here Her Instagram account here Some favorite quotes from today's episode: *“Homeschool kids don't just turn out OK. They can really flourish, even if it's hard in the middle.” GE *“Just because it's hard doesn't mean we're doing something wrong, or that our home schooling wasn't working, or that our kids are never going to learn. It just means it's different. “ CF *“If your kid has dyslexia or dysgraphia or dyscalculia they are gifted. They are gifted in so many ways. They have so many gifts they are going to be better than OK!” CF *“The Lord created our kids to be learning machines and we just need to trust the process.” CF *“God is going to use this. We don't know how and we don't know when, but we can trust Him.” GE *“Listening to books is reading books.” GE *“According to a study from Harvard, the number one thing that helped kids with dyslexia and dysgraphia be successful was to have at least 1 person in their life who is their cheerleader. At least one person who was their encourager.” CF *“As their moms, we know they are super smart and super intelligent, they just don't know it yet and it's our job to show them.” CF *For all the things that technology brings that can be problematic, there are also wonderful parts of technology that helps people with things like dyslexia. It can give them an opportunity for success.” GE *“Spend way more time on your child's gifts and talents than on the things they're struggling with!” CF *“Our culture likes to celebrate success right now, not the long, slow, version of success that some kids achieve.” GE *“Tell your kids over and over, ‘I love that about you'” CF

How are the roles of the church and family different in the areas of worship and discipleship? Who should lead and what roles should dad, mom, and kids play in family worship What roles do scripture reading/prayer/scripture memory/songs, hymns, and psalms/fellowship play in Family Worship? READING: LeapFrog Letter Factory: https://amzn.to/3alplr4 This is just the absolute best way to learn letter sounds. I have my kids watch this 2-3 times a day when they're learning to read. Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons: https://amzn.to/3aSFeem The BEST book for starting out or struggling readers. This is the number one thing I would work on! I started my kids at ages 4-6. A little dry, but push through! It's so thorough and backed by research BOB Books: https://amzn.to/2wUm3m4 Very easy books for the earliest readers. These are designed to help kids feel the immediate success that they "can read a whole book." Classic Start Books: https://amzn.to/2wUm3m4. My kids love these. They are classic literature stories rewritten for kids. Swiss Family Robinson is a favorite and also The Time Machine. Good for ages 6-9. MATH: If your child's school is using a common-core-based math curriculum, it may be difficult for you to understand the methodology behind it. So if your child has math assignments sent home with them, you may need a guide. There are plenty of free resources online, like these: https://www.pta.org/home/family-resources/Parents-Guides-to-Student-Success If you want your child to keep working on math assignments at home, the Saxon Math curriculum is really tried-and-true. It will likely have a familiar style to most adults, and it's easy to find used hardback textbooks on Amazon. For example: Saxon Math 6/5 (math book for average-advanced 5th grader or behind 6th grader.) https://amzn.to/2U0iBhr Look in the used book section to find some great deals! But consider taking this time to also memorize math facts, like multiplication tables. You can print out your own for free on https://www.math-drills.com/ Math-U-See, another popular math curriculum with homeschoolers, has some e-learning tools: www.mathusee.com/e-learning HANDWRITING: Print Capitals - Zaner Bloser Kindergarten https://amzn.to/3cO0Nih I like to start with this one, because it is scripted for parents and teaches you the headline, midline, and baseline, as well as directions like "pull down, push up, circle back." (Check out those used prices! I've always gotten ones that have about 5 pages written in them in pencil.) Kumon Lowercase Letters: https://amzn.to/2IU0XXL I like the Kumon books because they are pretty. But they are not scripted for parents to explain. That can be frustrating, which is why I start with a Zaner-Bloser book. Once you have the hang of it, you can move on to Kumon. This episode I interview my friend, Ann, who is a homeschool mom to two boys ages 9 & 6, and a 2 year old girl (and one on the way!). Please enjoy our mostly uncut, unedited, un-technical and unprepared conversation. This podcast interview was two hours, so I split it into Part 1 & Part 2. This is Part 1. We cover how my husband and her shared the same superlative in high school, dyslexia, ADHD, being Holy Spirit lead in a season to use a Christian school for one child, Danny Silk, knowing your child's love language, "Yes" kid dates, chores, list of assignments board, doing Classical Conversations at home, Community Bible Study (CBS), Math U See, Singapore math woes, media time, detoxing from the summer, when your child finally falls in love with reading, glasses, unfun days, schedules that work, photo math app, star walk app, and much more. If nothing else you will walk away feeling more normal, less crazy, and think you're a better mom than both of us. For real though, I hope you are encouraged, learn something, laugh, and enjoyed this while you folded laundry.

On today’s episode, I talk with Steve Demme about homeschool conventions and homeschooling in general. Steve is a pioneer of the modern homeschooling movement, as well as a great math teacher. He created the popular math program, Math-U-See through his family-owned company, Demme Learning. Check out the podcast Steve and I do together at BuildingFaithFamilies.org.
Bill Coder from Math U See was so great to visit with me about their math curriculum. When we started homeschooling, there were two or three math programs that I felt like I was hearing mentioned over and over again. Math U See was one of the top two.
