The project covers 3.595 miles of roads, costing $941,199.89, with an additional 0.405 miles possible if funds allow. Funded by Local Maintenance and Improvement Grants and SPLOST, work includes Great Sky Parkway, Fountain Oak Way, and Laurel Canyon Parkway. Cherokee County also approved a $3.36 million contract for resurfacing 17 miles countywide, including Towne Lake Hills East. Projects are set to finish by September, avoiding school traffic disruptions. STORY 2: Nelson Buys 4 Acres From Cherokee for Public Works Building The city of Nelson will build a new public works facility on a four-acre parcel purchased from Cherokee County for $120,000. Approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on April 15, the sale proceeds will go to the county fire department’s 2024 SPLOST budget. Nelson plans to use the site for housing sanitation trucks and equipment. The remaining six acres of the property will host a future fire station, replacing the unstaffed Fire Station 26, to better serve northern Cherokee County. STORY 3: Judge says Trump officials likely in contempt over deportations A federal judge, James Boasberg, found sufficient evidence to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt for deporting accused Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador on March 15, defying his verbal order to halt the flights. Boasberg cited "willful disregard" and "bad faith" by officials but has not yet named individuals for prosecution, giving the administration a chance to comply by allowing detainees to seek U.S. judicial review. The deportations, tied to Trump invoking the Alien Enemies Act, sparked legal battles over presidential authority and due process, with the Supreme Court later overturning Boasberg’s order pausing the removals. Paid zones include Chambers, Elm, Main, and East Main Streets, with enforcement from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Most parking, including a 600-space deck, remains free. Managed by Pivot Parking, the program aims to create 1,000 additional daily parking opportunities, with revenues funding enforcement and future parking improvements. STORY 5: Cherokee County Historic Store Transforming Into Coffee Shop The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a legacy use for We2Friends Coffeehouse to transform the historic J.B. Mathis General Store on Union Hill Road into a coffeehouse and gift shop. Built in 1950, the store is a cherished piece of local history. The legacy use allows the business to open without rezoning, preserving the building while adapting it for modern community needs. The coffeehouse will feature locally roasted coffee, gifts, and a welcoming space for social interaction. Commissioners hope this project inspires others to restore historic buildings in the area. Graduating in May, Sumayyah Yoonas and Natalia Diaz Vega share unique journeys to teaching, inspired by personal experiences and a passion for helping students. GGC alumnus Dustin Wilson, now a fifth-grade teacher, emphasizes the rewards of fostering student growth. The role of AI in education is also evolving, with these educators using it for lesson planning, critical thinking, and student engagement while encouraging balanced use. STORY 2: Gwinnett seeking grant to upgrade pond at Shorty Howell Park Gwinnett County commissioners approved applying for an $808,830 grant to upgrade Shorty Howell Park's natural landscape. The project will replace the park's aging pond with a stormwater wetland and rain garden, improving stormwater management, water quality, and aesthetics while serving as an educational resource. If awarded, the county will contribute $539,220 in matching funds. STORY 3: Gwinnett planning pedestrian improvements at two I-85 overpasses Gwinnett County plans to enhance pedestrian safety on two bridges over I-85 by adding fencing and new crosswalks at Center Way and Brook Hollow Parkway. Alabama's challenge was dismissed, with the court citing negligible impacts on Alabama's water supply. This ruling follows decades of litigation and complements Georgia's 2021 Supreme Court win over Florida regarding water consumption impacts. Officials praised the decision, emphasizing responsible water management and collaboration among stakeholders. STORY 5: Economic development researcher expects local, state economies to outperform nation Metro Atlanta and Georgia are expected to outperform the national economy due to strong investments in logistics, healthcare, ports, and manufacturing recovery, according to Alfie Meek of Georgia Tech's Economic Development Research. However, challenges like persistent inflation, high mortgage rates, and slow wage growth in low-wage sectors remain nationwide. Meek also predicts slight unemployment increases and limited Federal Reserve rate cuts. Despite this, U.S. manufacturing shows promise with fewer regulations and lower energy costs. This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. Concerns over GDOT’s timeline, which could delay construction by over five years, led the city to prioritize its own 18-month schedule. While the project’s cost is estimated at $6 million now, inflation could push it to $10 million under GDOT’s timeline. The city will use $4 million from SPLOST funds and reallocate additional funds as needed, ensuring faster progress and local control over the project. STORY 2: Marietta Cracks Down on Homeless Encampments The Marietta City Council approved a new ordinance targeting homeless encampments, allowing police to charge individuals camping, sleeping, or storing property on private land without permission. The law, passed 6-1 with Councilmember Joseph Goldstein opposed, aims to address frequent complaints about trespassing. Police Chief David Beam emphasized that officers would issue warnings and verify property owner consent before citing violators. Goldstein raised concerns about potential Fourth Amendment violations under future leadership. These specially trained dogs, Major and Aubie, will patrol campuses with certified handlers, focusing on concealed weapons through scent detection. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale highlighted their efficiency compared to traditional weapons detectors, which can be disruptive and less accurate. Cobb Lawmakers, Business Leaders Rally Against 30-Year Transit Tax

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, October 4th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb Lawmakers, Business Leaders Rally Against 30-Year Transit Tax In Marietta, Republican lawmakers and business leaders rallied against Cobb County's proposed 30-year transit tax, the Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST), which aims to raise $11 billion for transit improvements. Critics, including LOUD Security Systems President John Loud and other former Cobb Chamber of Commerce chairs, argue the tax represents the largest increase in Cobb's history and could lead to "SPLOST fatigue," affecting future tax extensions. They claim the tax would harm businesses and isn't justified by the county's population density. Republican state representatives and senators also voiced opposition, citing concerns over economic impact and inefficacy of mass transit in Georgia. Despite the 2018 bipartisan support for House Bill 930, which enabled the tax proposal, some lawmakers now regret their votes. Proponents argue the tax is necessary for accommodating growth and improving transportation, while opponents suggest focusing on road improvements and remote work to address traffic issues. From the………………. Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, September 3rd and Happy Birthday to Charlie Sheen    I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  2nd Annual Pickleball Tournament Deemed a Success 1830s-era East Cobb Cabin Moved to Safety Embattled Cobb Superior Court Clerk Outraising Opponent All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA   STORY 1:  2nd Annual Pickleball Tournament Deemed a Success Last year's Battle of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament, which pitted Commissioner Keli Gambrill's team against Dr. Jatunn Gibson's for Meals on Wheels, expanded this year to include all county departments. Held at Jim Miller Park, the event featured eight pickleball courts and aimed to foster inter-departmental relationships and boost morale. Keith Mazonkey from Human Resources and Jennifer Christoffersen shared how it was a chance to meet colleagues and improve teamwork. The tournament raised over $5,700 for Meals on Wheels, surpassing last year's total and helping feed 50 seniors. Positive feedback might lead to future expansions. Donations can still be made online until this Friday. STORY 2:     1830s-era East Cobb Cabin Moved to Safety The historic Power-Jackson Cabin, built in the 1830s, has been disassembled due to threats from development and deterioration. Originally located at 4701 Post Oak Tritt Road, it was donated to Cobb Landmarks and will be reassembled this fall at Hyde Farm Park, thanks to a $321,000 SPLOST fund allocation. The cabin, a key piece of Cobb County's early history, faced severe damage but is being meticulously moved with detailed documentation to facilitate reconstruction. The relocation, while necessary, is bittersweet for preservationists. The cabin's restoration will help preserve a rare example of early settler architecture in the region. STORY 3:  Embattled Cobb Superior Court Clerk Outraising Opponent Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, a Democrat, has raised nearly $20,600 for her reelection, double the amount raised by her Republican opponent Deborah Dance, who has gathered about $10,550, including a personal loan of $4,400. Taylor, who has faced controversy over her office's performance and handling of fees, has a substantial $14,200 remaining in her campaign fund. Dance has about $5,200 left after spending half of her raised funds. Despite past controversies, Taylor won 53% of the vote in the May primary against three challengers. The Superior Court is currently under a judicial emergency due to issues with Taylor's office, extending deadlines for legal actions.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE   STORY 4:  Cobb to Consider Townhome Development off Veterans Memorial The Cobb Planning Commission will review a proposal for a 42-unit townhome development on a 6.5-acre site at 1558 Veterans Memorial Highway. Developer Thomas Orok's plan includes two-story, for-sale townhomes ranging from 2,910 to 3,452 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and two-car garages. The project, which requires rezoning from commercial to residential, aims to serve as a transition between single-family homes and commercial areas. Originally scheduled for March, the case has been delayed several times and is now set for Tuesday's meeting. STORY 5:  Vinings Man Drowns in Lake Lanier Vinings resident Hasani Kamau Widemond, 46, drowned at Lake Lanier over the holiday weekend. Widemond was swimming from shore to his boat at Bethel Park when he disappeared under the water. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, and fire departments from Forsyth and Hall Counties responded. Widemond was located about 25 feet underwater using sonar and recovered by divers with the aid of Hall County Fire's Remote Operated Vessel.   We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 3 STORY 6:  'A Gem of a City': Popular History Book Returns to William Root House Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society has reissued its popular 432-page book, "Marietta: The Gem City of Georgia," after a two-year hiatus. Written by Douglas Frey and originally published in 2010, the book explores 50 historic Marietta homes and their inhabitants, featuring around 300 color photos by Jim DiVitale. After selling out in 2022 and being sought after for high prices online, the book is now available again at the William Root House Museum and Garden gift shop. The reprint was made possible by a $10,000 donation. The book, which highlights Marietta's architectural and historical charm, is priced at $100, or $80 with a Cobb Landmarks membership. STORY 7:    National Hunting and Fishing Day in Georgia On September 28, Georgia will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day with multiple free events across the state. This day, recognized by a recent proclamation from Gov. Brian Kemp, highlights the cultural and environmental significance of hunting and fishing. Established by Congress and President Nixon in 1972, NHF Day acknowledges the conservation contributions of sportsmen and women, who have raised over $57 billion for conservation efforts. Activities include family fishing events, Outdoor Adventure Days with archery and shooting, and a free fishing day where no licenses are required. We'll be right back   Break 2: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE   STORY 4: How we ‘brainwash' ourselves while we sleep Neurobiologists have discovered that our brains undergo a cleansing process every night during sleep, similar to washing dishes, to rid themselves of waste accumulated during the day. This process involves coordinated brain waves propelling fluid through brain tissue to remove debris. The findings, based on studying sleeping mice, suggest new strategies for tackling diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which involve the buildup of waste in the brain. Enhancing this brain cleansing process could potentially allow people to sleep less while maintaining health, benefiting those with insomnia. Understanding this process better could lead to therapies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases by improving waste removal from the brain. The brain's cleaning method may vary depending on the type and amount of waste present. STORY 5: Georgia Democrats push for state laws protecting reproductive rights following Alabama court ruling Georgia Democrats are urging Republicans to safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling deeming fertilized eggs as children under state law. Sen. Elena Parent, the lead sponsor of the bill, emphasizes the need for certainty amid concerns that couples in Georgia may reconsider IVF due to legal uncertainty. Democrats call for legislative action to protect IVF and contraception, expressing concerns over potential legal implications similar to those seen in Alabama. However, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch dismisses the need for such legislation, citing the ruling's applicability only to Alabama. Despite Democratic efforts, Gooch opposes addressing the issue hastily in the Senate, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed bill. Additionally, Democrats highlight the lack of congressional action to safeguard contraception access following a Supreme Court justice's opinion suggesting reconsideration of precedents like Roe v. Wade.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES 8     STORY 6: Georgia Power could face new law to disclose its cost of power generation on customer bills Georgia Power customers are facing higher electricity rates and increased costs for nuclear expansion, prompting a push for transparency in billing. House Bill 1406, championed by Chairman Don Parsons, requires Georgia Power to disclose information about fuel costs on customer bills, aiming to enhance understanding of energy charges. This comes amid concerns over Georgia Power's business practices and recent rate hikes. While the company opposes the bill, arguing that much of the information is available online, proponents emphasize the need for clarity, particularly regarding fluctuating fuel costs. Critics accuse Georgia Power of prioritizing secrecy over customer interests, highlighting the importance of transparency in government-run monopolies. The bill's fate now rests with the House Rules Committee ahead of the legislative deadline.   STORY 7: Kim Towne, City Of Suwanee Earn Event Awards At the 2024 Kaleidoscope Awards Gala by the Southeast Festivals and Events Association, Suwanee received seven awards, including Event Professional of the Year, for its 2023 event season. Ragsdale commended Marietta City Schools for their similar efforts. The initial bans were prompted by an email from the right-wing social media group Libs of TikTok. Ragsdale asserted that once sexually explicit content is identified, it is the district's responsibility to protect students and inform parents. The ongoing review aims to identify and remove such materials. Critics argue that the bans disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ content, leading to concerns about the targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. Public commenters, including high school senior Ava Bussey, expressed opposition to the book bans, citing the impact on LGBTQ+ students and urging the district to listen to students' needs for a successful learning environment. The property, spanning over 10 acres, includes the former A1 Rental facility, the district's police department headquarters, and a demolished building at 440 Glover Street. The new event center aims to fill a void in the northern part of Cobb County, providing a space for various activities. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Jake M. Turnage, a 25-year-old from Kennesaw, was one of eight U.S. airmen killed in a CV-22 Osprey aircraft crash off the coast of Japan during a training exercise. Turnage served as a flight engineer with the 21st Special Operations Squadron, part of the 353rd Special Operations Wing at Yokota Air Base. The crash occurred on Nov. 29, and recovery operations have transitioned from search and rescue to search and recovery. The other seven airmen who lost their lives in the crash were identified, representing various roles and units within the Air Force. STORY 2: Cobb State Lawmakers Split Over Israel Resolution The Georgia House passed a resolution condemning Hamas for murders and expressing support for Israel, with Democrats splitting on the vote. The resolution, condemning an attack by Hamas that killed Israelis and a subsequent conflict that led to Palestinian deaths, saw some Democrats abstaining or being excused. Cobb's Republican House representatives supported the resolution, except one, while most Democratic representatives were excused or did not vote. Critics accused some Democrats of avoiding a vote. The resolution's GOP sponsorship drew criticism from Democrats, suggesting it was politically motivated and failed to address Palestinian deaths. Cobb's divide on the issue was highlighted by the Board of Commissioners' consideration of a similar pro-Israel resolution, which was ultimately pulled amidst community concerns about the Palestinian experience. STORY 3: Cobb School Board to Consider $100 Million in Construction Loans The Cobb Board of Education is set to consider issuing a request for $100 million in construction notes to fund special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST) projects in 2024. This short-term borrowing tool will be repaid using SPLOST revenue. The move is part of a common practice in Cobb to get a head start on projects and counter rising construction costs. While the board will decide on the request, a vote on approving bids for loans is expected later. Additionally, the board will vote on approving new vehicles, including transit vans, maintenance trucks, and police vehicles, using SPLOST V funding. The development encompasses three warehouses, up to 140 townhomes, 200 age-restricted apartments, and up to 30,000 square feet of retail space on a 57-acre piece of land. The land, zoned differently in various areas, would see the northern part rezoned for housing and retail, and the southern part for warehouses. The Planning Commission made two motions for the Board of Commissioners to consider—one rezoning the entire property for retail and housing, and another approving both zoning categories, each with stipulations. The fate of the development now rests with the Board of Commissioners. From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, October 25th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Commissioners Clash Over Funding for Veterans Memorial Two Republican members of the Cobb Board of Commissioners clashed over a proposal to allocate $1 million in county funding to the Cobb County Veterans Memorial. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, a proponent of the memorial, requested to move the item up on the agenda, sparking an argument with Commissioner Keli Gambrill. Gambrill opposed using county funds for the project, which is part of a Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) initiative. She also noted uncertainty in the memorial's cost. Birrell wants to allocate her $1 million contingency to the memorial, in addition to existing SPLOST funds. The disagreement revolves around funding and land ownership, with Gambrill expressing concerns about financial planning. The commission will vote on the matter at a later meeting. In July, a federal judge ruled that the school district couldn't be held liable but didn't rule on the map's merits. The Cobb County Board of Elections, the only remaining defendant, is settling with the plaintiffs, declining to defend the map. Initial findings suggest a lone suspect approached the establishment, shot and killed two individuals, and then fled in a vehicle. The suspect's vehicle was tracked using Flock cameras. Officers located the suspect's vehicle, and the incident ended when the suspect took their own life. Cobb plans to sell old truck stop to multifamily housing developerFrom the Henssler Financial Studios this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Dayco Systems. Today is Wednesday July 5th, and I'm Brian Giffin.  The Cobb County commissioners have voted to sell a 3.8-acre surplus land to a developer specializing in multifamily housing. The vacant lot, previously a Pilot truck stop, is situated near Atlanta Road in unincorporated Smyrna, close to Interstate 285. The vote passed with a 4-1 majority, with Commissioner Keli Gambrill opposing due to concerns about the deal structure. The final sale price depends on the number of homes the developer is permitted to build on the lot, which Gambrill sees as a conflict for future decisions. The Columbus-based Flournoy Development Group will pay the county between $7.55 million and $13.65 million, depending on rezoning approval. The property is currently zoned for commercial use, and the price range is based on the anticipation of 199 to 325 units. The county purchased the lot for $12.97 million as part of a transportation project and will use the proceeds from the sale for transportation special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds. Gambrill expressed concerns about the refunding of SPLOST, as it would require approval for over 300 units. The developer has 360 days for due diligence, and if unsatisfied with rezoning, they can withdraw from the purchase. For more on this story, visit mdjonline.com For the Daily Journal podcast, I'm Brian Giffinwww.henssler.com www.daycosystems.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nicholas Tiliacos, the owner of Marietta's Come-N-Get-It restaurant, has been charged with sexual assault against two employees, arrest warrants show. Both Cobb and Marietta police charged Tiliacos with multiple counts of sexual battery and cruelty to children against two individuals who worked at the restaurant. The alleged victims were underage at the time, per the warrants. The incidents allegedly occurred over the course of two years from 2020 to 2022, both at the restaurant and at Tiliacos' home in east Cobb. Tiliacos is accused by one victim of groping them multiple times over the two-year period without their consent. Similar allegations of groping were made by a second victim, who also alleged the incidents took place at both the restaurant and Tiliacos' home. It was unclear if the two alleged victims still worked at the restaurant. Joel Pugh, Tiliacos' attorney, declined to comment on the case. Tiliacos is out on a $60,000 bond after he was charged in October. He has yet to be indicted and his case is pending, per the Cobb District Attorney's office. More than two months after voters cast ballots to create a new city of Mableton, hundreds of residents turned out to continue the fight against cityhood with a single-minded purpose. They want out. A standing-room-only audience of hundreds packed the Cobb County Police Academy on Wednesday night, demanding an exit ramp from the first Cobb city to be incorporated in more than 100 years. Some said they'd never known they were in the city limits until they showed up to vote. Others, like Donna Georgiana, had simply assumed the proposal would fail like its counterparts in East Cobb, Lost Mountain, and Vinings — until it didn't. Georgiana told the MDJ she wasn't mixed up in the debate before the election, because “I really never thought it would pass, ever.” Through the town hall, pacing the stage was state Representative David Wilkerson of Powder Springs, who derided the 78,000-strong Mableton as “the largest H.O.A. in Cobb County.” Wilkerson has emerged as one of Mableton's fiercest critics since the city's referendum passed in November with 53% of the vote. Highlighting what he called “open questions” that remain after the referendum, he plans to introduce legislation this year to de-annex from the new city several precincts that voted “no” in the referendum. But the loudest voices Wednesday came from the audience, who wanted above all the answer to this question: what can we do? Wilkerson said for now, their best bet is with lawmakers under the Gold Dome. But the key, he said, will be persuading the entire Cobb County Legislative Delegation to get on board with the proposal, and he encouraged attendees to lobby their representatives hard in the coming months. Options on the table could include a “surgical” de-annexation of areas that voted against cityhood (predominantly in the city's northeast), or a do-over of the election entirely. That latter option got some of the most spirited cheers of the night. But state Representative Sharon Cooper,  of east Cobb, told the MDJ Thursday that lawmakers will likely want to hear from both sides of the issue before jumping to a legislative fix Walker did not have to look far to find its new football coach, promoting T.J. Anderson to lead the Wolverines' program. Anderson has been at Walker for two years as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. Anderson has experience at all levels of football. A graduate of South Gwinnett High School, he was a running back at Georgia Southern and was part of the Eagles' 2000 national championship in what was then NCAA's Division I-AA. He also won three Southern Conference championships under coaches Paul Johnson and Mike Sewak. Anderson, who also played in the Arena Football League for two years, returned to Georgia Southern in 2018 to served as the director of high school relations under then-coach Chad Lunsford. He also has experience in high school as an assistant coach at Westminster, Mountain View and Etowah. Anderson succeeds interim coach Tom Evangelista and becomes the fifth head coach since the beginning of the 2020 season. During that time, Walker has gone 3-25. No longer science fiction, the use of artificial intelligence to recognize and match faces to public images harvested from the internet is a reality the Cobb County Police Department wants people to understand and support. Members of Cobb police spent two hours discussing the use of facial recognition technology and their new contract with Clearview AI, hoping to alleviate concerns and inform the 25 residents gathered for the District 3 town hall meeting Wednesday night at the Tim Lee Senior Center  Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said the technology is secure and would only be used by law enforcement in a limited capacity, likening it to receiving an anonymous tip. The majority of the questions asked by the public dealt with fears of living in a surveillance state. It was mainly up to Cobb Police Captain Darin Hull of the Violent Crime Bureau to make the case for using the technology in a safe, secure manner to rapidly apprehend suspects. Hull repeatedly emphasized how the technology would not be abused and how “guardrails" would be in place. The 150-year-old covered bridge on Concord Road in Smyrna has been reopened after it was once again hit by a vehicle and closed for repairs. Cobb DOT was repairing the protective beam of the bridge Friday morning, according to the county.   "Concord Road has been reopened to (hopefully height appropriate) traffic," the county said on its Twitter. "The bridge is fine." The historic covered bridge has been the site of crashes and closures that have grown too numerous to count, the most recent occurring in December. The bridge's low clearance, indicated by abundant signage around the bridge, is the cause of most of the accidents. The bridge was built in 1872 and is the county's only remaining covered bridge still in use. In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Officials symbolically shoveled dirt downtown on Thursday afternoon to mark the start of a new, $6 million amphitheater at Depot Park. Construction will begin February 1 and is scheduled to last 12 months. Kennesaw staff said that timeline is subject to adjustment, if the project is hampered by weather or supply chain issues. Once complete, the amphitheater will hold between 1,500 and 2,000 people, according to City Manager Jeff Drobney. The design calls for a 50-foot by 42-foot stage, with turf grass terraces fanning out from there. The project also includes new restrooms and storage space, and the renovation of the Community House. The amphitheater will cap off a long-running, eight-phase master plan for the park, which now boasts a playground, open play field, walking trail, picnic tables and benches. Construction of Depot Park was funded by successive rounds of 1% special purpose local option sales tax dollars. The amphitheater will be funded by the 2022 round of SPLOST, which began collecting revenue last January and will run through the end of 2027. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com      See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
