Sinead Faughnan has worked as a financial advisor with UBS for the past 17 years. She is focused in particular on inter-generational wealth transfer. We start by discussing Sinead's rich Irish roots, her parents were originally from County Kerry and she herself was born in Ireland and moved to the US when she was three years old. She discusses her upbringing in Yonkers and the values that her parents' work ethic instilled in her. When it came to her own career, she was driven to be self-sufficient and once told, along her trajectory, that she was too ambitious for a role. We dwell on that for a minute - asking whether it inspired or deflated her, and ultimately learn how it made her only more determined to win at the game, even it meant playing - for a spell - by some different rules. With a long career in wealth management we trace her mentors, her role models and how she learned to find her own voice with her clients. Ultimately this meant giving them a voice - setting the table around their expectations, learning curve and values and only then, when these basics are set, moving to the investment discussion. We speak about the evolution of financial planning and the role that a compassionate advisor can play. We talk in particular about the concerns of female clients and how we can include them more in the conversation. When it comes to words of wisdom, Sinead suggests saying yes to stretch assignments and dressing for the job you want, not the one you have. This #TuesdayTalkWithLB I got to jump on the phone with Mississippi State baseball player, Von Seibert. We started off with Von telling me about growing up in a small town around Mobile, AL and his life revolving around baseball. We talked about injuries as a high school senior and how mentally and physically challenging that is to overcome. Von told me about going to play baseball at Pearl River Community College in South MS. We discussed the incredible level of athletes that compete at the junior college level in the state of Mississippi. Von told me about being able to take his game to the next level during his time at Pearl River. We talked about the small town feeling of a college town, especially one like Starkville, MS and how that played a role into his commitment to Mississippi State. We touched on some of the details and insights of being a college athlete, and he told me about some of the crazy things that college athletes are required to do. Then, Von told me about his second favorite sport - duck hunting. We talked about how we originally met, and Von actually was behind me in line at a boat ramp. He told me about some of his favorite duck hunting memories that stick out, and we told some stories about the fulfillment that we feel when we are in the woods. We talked about traveling to duck hunt and experience different styles of duck hunting, and getting to share that with other people. And of course, we wrapped up with some advice & Von truly lives his life through his advice. Can't thank him enough for taking his time between baseball games to hop on the podcast! I have an extra special episode today to mark the 100th episode of Making It Count! So much has happened since my podcasting journey began and I've learned so much from my incredible guests and also about myself.    Since launching in 2018, three very significant things happened; I turned 50, Covid came along and changed the world forever and I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Through it all, I continued to release episodes, connecting with so many incredible people along the way and nearly tripling in downloads.   To celebrate this incredible milestone, I've asked the lovely Melissa Williams to jump in the host seat and interview me to help unpack the last 100 episodes. It's been interesting to reflect on the lessons I've learned, how my brand has evolved throughout this journey and how I have personally grown more brave and bold through all my experiences.    Although it was a really challenging list to narrow down, I share my top 5 episodes of all time, what I loved about them, and some of the insights that these 5 remarkable guests brought to each episode.    I'm so grateful to everyone who has joined me on this journey and for the opportunity to inspire others to make it count in their own way.  Being an occasion that is absolutely worth celebrating, I also have a special offer for you! The filmmaker accomplishes this by encouraging playful exploration in a multi-media installation of 70+ toy pandas she created in her neighbourhood. The vibe of the film is lighthearted and optimistic. As the children initiate an election on behalf of the pandas, their experience embodies community building, demonstrates acts of civic engagement and conveys the important message that, by working together, even young children can effect change.  The film is a life-affirming tribute to kids' compassion and the birth of their activism!” Go to the WILDsound TV app. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). Michael Stevens joins Purposely to share his founder story developing and launching the Rainbow Tick. Michael's mission was to support the rainbow community in a tangible way, helping the community to gain acceptance and inclusion in the workplace and he had seen similar initiatives abroad. ‘It was about positively impacting people's mental health and about accepting and valuing people in the workplace, embracing the diversity of sexual and gender identities.' The first programme of its kind in New Zealand, organisations undertake an accreditation process carried out by an independent assessor receiving the Rainbow Tick a visible sign that business embraces all genders and sexual identities. As a gay man, Michael knew from personal experience how important this initiative would be for future generations. Michael initially struggled to accept his own sexual identity and had to deal with a school culture that wasn't fully inclusive or accepting. In 1988 Michael was diagnosed as HIV+, he was 27 years old and living in Istanbul, Turkey. The following years were filled with anger, sadness, sickness and acceptance, as he believed he had only a few years to live. That was nearly 30 years ago. Now, he's in his 60's. ‘I spent so long thinking about and planning my own death during those years, although it didn't happen' In 1988, the HIV/Aids epidemic was sweeping the world. many of his gay friends began to talk about it, and when his flatmate in Istanbul tested positive he decided he should get tested too. Michael travelled to London to receive his test. The doctor at the clinic told him he had HIV, and advised him to go home to New Zealand and prepare to die within the next two years. ‘I felt absolutely devastated and I went into a deep depression, but I decided I wasn't ready to go home, so I returned to Istanbul.' ‘When I told my family, they were upset for me of course, but fully supportive. I know a lot of people were cut off, but luckily for me this wasn't the case.' In the next few years, Michael said he didn't feel too bad, but in 1993, he received the news one of his closest friends who was diagnosed around the same time as him, had died. ‘I figured if he'd now died from it, I probably didn't have much time left. So I decided to go home for his funeral and prepare for my own.” The next year, Stevens became sick. He contracted tuberculosis and Pneumocystis pneumonia, a type of pneumonia often associated with a weakened immune system caused by HIV. He lost a large amount of weight in a short span of time and was constantly tired. He could no longer walk up the stairs at work without getting out of breath. It was at this stage he was told his HIV had progressed to its final stage, known as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Michael was in his thirties at this point. Michael was admitted to the ‘AIDS ward' of Auckland Hospital but later released to Herne Bay House, a residential centre and hospice dedicated to caring for people diagnosed with HIV. Michael believed this is where he was going die. “I had been very angry and bitter about the situation up until this point. My attitude almost got me thrown out of the hospice, but eventually, I came more to terms with it and began to plan my death” Today he describes how the stigma has really decreased around having HIV, it has become much less pronounced as many people have a better understanding of it. “A lot of it was just fear really, people were afraid, and they didn't understand why it was happening” “If you think of the friends you make in your late teens and early 20s, they're often the friends that are with you for life. “Nearly all of my gay friends had HIV, and so many died. So many gay men from my youth are not here to turn 60 with me” Michael currently works as a relationship manager for Be.Lab a New Zealand based organisation which helps businesses and organisations to be more accessible. Prior to this he has was part of the AKL Uni Sociology Department. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Be-YOU-tiful Adaptive Warrior

Rising to a Challenge and Facing Your Fears   You just never know what's on the other side of fear. But I can tell you, from experience, that I have never regretted a moment that I have taken the chance and faced a fear. I feel empowered and alive! I feel like I could do anything I set my mind to, and it doesn't matter if I succeed or fail, what matters is that I try. This past week I tried something new, as an amputee: waterskiing! I haven't been waterskiing since well before my injury, but it has been on my amputee bucket list. I was excited when the opportunity presented itself to me, but I also felt very anxious, and at one point in time thought I wouldn't go, and I could easily make an excuse why I couldn't make it. My personality (and my pride) wouldn't allow me to make up an excuse and so I went, and you know what? Even though, I was a bit nervous, had no idea how it would all go down, who would be on my boat with me, or how it might have to be adapted for my circumstance, I tried. All in all, I had a great time and finally found my groove on the boom and got up and skied!! It was exhilarating and freeing.  I felt alive and capable. Every time I run into something I fear, once I give it a try, I am reassured that I can do anything I put my mind to. And like I said before, success or failure, the idea of trying and overcoming our fears is all that really matters. There is something so motivating about pushing our limits, real or imagined, facing fears and rising to a challenge. It's empowering, it's freeing, and makes you feel alive!   Each picture below shows me doing something that originally made me nervous or unsure of myself. Now I enjoy doing them and they make me feel whole, healthy, and bring joy to my life.       Now is the time! Your time to try. Your time to rise. Don't let fear control you or rule over your life and how you live it. Regret is an awful thing to have. Choose something you've been curious about trying or something on your bucket list. Choose something that makes you nervous, anxious, or makes you feel fearful. Now go for it! Make sure you aren't doing something that your support system or doctors have told you not to do at this moment because of your condition, please know your medical boundaries. Maybe start with baby steps to get to your goal of achieving something. Remember, life is a journey. It's meant to last and be enjoyed. Like my waterskiing. I got up on the boom but need to work on getting up on the long rope. Goals. It's ok to fail. Just get out there and try! Enjoy the journey and where you're at right now. Everything happens in due time. You can do it! Believe in yourself and reach for the stars!   And as always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!!   Much love, Angie

A Torah portion about a census? Riveting stuff, right? We are familiar with census taking, for both the good of managing resources and community programs, as well as for excluding or retaliating against populations. But a census can tell a deeper story than a simple count of a population. Homeless services rely on Point In Time counts, but the number tells a larger story of school performance, history of redlining, and even voting access. TBE member Emily Jasper explains that in order to truly practice Tikkun Olam, we must know our community through the numbers. Temple Beth-El is committed to leading people into growing relationships with Jewish community, wisdom, and practice that help them thrive intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually and that inspire them to build a more compassionate, just, and peaceful world.
