Valorie Burton.
Guilt is a primary hidden driver that we've accepted as a norm. How much of your lives and actions are being driven by this life draining motive? Probably more than you are aware of. But why, is the question. And how can you stop it? I'm with Valorie Burton. Valorie is founder of the Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute and has written more than a dozen books on personal development. She has a unique combination of research, faith, and personal transparency that inspires people to action and delivers practical tools to find fulfillment and purpose in work and life. Her book, “Let Go Of The Guilt,” is my muse. Valerie's research into the reality and nuances of guilt and the hold it has on us is profound, which is why I pursued her to be on the show and shine a light on this very insidious and pervasive driver that is leading so many of us to frustration, exhaustion, burn out and unfulfillment. I begin with Valorie's story. What were her early drivers? What drove her to push and strive and get herself into the Air Force Academy on a presidential appointment, then what drove her to drop out? What drove her to realize how much of her drive was fueled by guilt and what drove her to start a PR firm then abandon it to be an author and speaker? What drove her to marry, then divorce, then to marry again? What drives her today? Type Valorie Burton in any search engine and you'll find her everywhere, and her coaching business is at cappinstitute.com Got a comment or question about an episode? In 2019, I did what many corporate types would call "the unthinkable." I walked away from opportunities at a Fortune 10 after being "surplussed" without a job lined up. Sure, I had opportunities externally. Yes, I had a seedling of a business that I had started, but I wanted to take the time to think through my next step methodically. I had a mission that only a few were aware of, and that drove me to seek out the one thing that I needed to activate it. Could I do it and remain in corporate? I had interested organizations telling me that I could do both-pursue my calling to author books and speak across the country and internationally and work for them. But I knew that would eventually cause friction. I'd lived it already. That one piece was missing that would activate my mission, and a scroll through Instagram and an ad from a longtime sisterfriend and former client would ultimately become the the gateway to my destiny. I let that sisterfriend turn the tables on me this week, and I thought it would be great to finally share my story: how I went from there...to here, five years later with a thriving, global executive and personal coaching and consulting practice, a publishing journey that has been extraordinary and the speaker tour that began in 2015 and has yet to end. What took me from a 25+ year-long career in strategic communication, agency side, agency owner, and client side to here? I pass Valorie Burton, MAPP, MCC the mic on my show, The Culture Soup Podcast ® as she featured me in her global preview call for The Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute. That is where I earned my certification that would tee me up for credentialing at the world's most respected coaching organizations, International Coaching Federation. I began with her Coach Training Intensive (CTI). So it's befitting that I allowed Valorie to throw back the covers on my purpose-driven story. My pen as my sword, my speaking as my munitions, evidence-based coaching, I discovered, would ultimately become my armor. Join me and Val for this inspiring and powerful conversation about what it actually takes to take on coaching as a profession in this special, extended video edition of The Culture Soup Podcast ® brought to you in part by The CaPP Institute. We're continuing to celebrate the five years anniversary of NSC Coaching, and six years for the podcast with this exclusive rebroadcast of "Conversation with a Coach", and it streams everywhere Thursday afternoon.

Do you beat yourself up when you don't do things perfectly? Do you struggle with that nagging feeling that you've never quite done enough? Perhaps, for example, you have felt guilty about motherhood when you're achieving success in your career. If so, you are not alone. The same character trait that drives you to succeed as a successful woman may also be weighing you down with a feeling of guilt that you should be doing more.So how do we learn to let go of these feelings of guilt so that we can live a life that is unencumbered by the unnecessary weight of expectation we place on ourselves (or others place on us)? Valorie Burton teaches us how to do just that and take back our joy in today's inspiring episode of Successful Women Think Differently.First, we start with an understanding of why women are more prone to guilt and an examination of what guilt looks like in our everyday lives. From saying yes when we mean to say no, to letting others cross our boundaries, there are myriad ways we allow ourselves to feel guilty (without even knowing it) – and then make poor decisions. Recognizing that guilt is just a message and so an opportunity for change is a positive approach to take. Learning the difference between authentic and false guilt is the start of our journey to take back our joy. So don't go on that guilt trip if you don't need to – it will only leave you in debt! Please join us. "Most of the guilt that we're feeling, it's not authentic. It's not that we have caused harm or that we have done something wrong. Today, we're going to talk to you about a topic that we often see get overlooked or avoided. As leaders, we want to attract great team members. We want to build inspiring teams and yet, sometimes we avoid the very things that produce the greatest cultures. Often, those things are simple, but they are extraordinarily hard. The simple but challenging topic we're going to tackle today is: feedback. How do you create a culture where feedback is given and received, normal and expected, appropriate and productive? In this week's episode, Jenni helps us answer that question as she shares the 3 elements of a healthy culture of feedback, 4 ways to create feedback loops throughout the organization, 3 questions to consider for giving healthy feedback, and suggestions for what to do when a team member doesn't receive feedback well. There's a type of debt that far too many people are drowning in – and it's not financial debt. This kind of debt is stressful too. It can steal your dreams and your relationships and leave you with that nasty feeling of regret. Valorie Burton is talking about Time Debt on today's episode of Successful Women Think Differently. How can we overcome our time poverty and time debt and get on the road to building time freedom and time wealth? For starters, we have more choices than we give ourselves credit for, and so getting out of time debt begins with a mindset shift that is swiftly followed by changing your habits. Valorie is sharing her insights into the personal epiphany she experienced when she realized that her 'time optimism' (believing anything was possible and that time wasn't really an obstacle) had led her to feel overwhelmed, less productive, and in serious 'time debt.'Buying back your time so that you can spend that time more wisely and create time wealth for yourself becomes a pleasure when you realize that the power to change is in your hands. Don't let the tick-tock of Father Time stop you as a successful woman from thinking differently about how you reschedule your priorities in alignment with a 'time vision' for your life that will lead you to ever greater joy and success. What distinguishes the most successful women: those who achieve their vision, are rooted in their purpose, conquer their goals that might seem really difficult, and tap into their gifts and the things that are really important to them? What distinguishes that woman from a similar one who perhaps has the same resources and talent – and yet finds herself falling short of her goals? Welcome to the first episode of Successful Women Think Differently. I'm your host Valorie Burton, and I'm so, so excited that you are here with me. I'm going to tell you that one thing that distinguishes the most successful women from the rest in today's episode. But first, I'm going to share some of my background and story so that you can get to know me better, and hopefully appreciate and understand where I am coming from. I'll also be defining success – encouraging you to think about creating your own definition of success (or even adapting the one that I use). At the end of the episode, I'll be talking about some key decisions that highlight the distinction between the most successful women out there and those that fall a bit short. This is an invitation for you to join me as we begin to explore how Successful Women Think Differently. "I never regretted taking that leap of faith. Procrastination... what is that all about?!? How can you think differently in a way that will get you to push forward when you feel like hesitating? I'm Valorie Burton, and I sometimes jokingly refer to myself as a 'recovering procrastinator.' That's because there are times when I push past my procrastination and get things done – and then there are times when I fall back into my old habits. Today I'm sharing on the subconscious habits that cause us to procrastinate, as well as the tools we can use to identify when we are procrastinating and what to do to stop it. You can push through. You can achieve your goals. Sometimes it will be due to an adrenaline-fueled deadline, sometimes it will be so that you can make it to a Prince concert on time! Getting things done with joy and ease is better, though. Tapping into our sense of purpose and meeting that deadline in a calm and deliberate manner (without anxiety, stress, and self-sabotaging thoughts) is way better. Let's unpack what it is that you are stalling on. Let's discover what your procrastination is telling you about yourself. And then, once we've reflected on why we are holding ourselves back, we can get to work with actual tools to combat procrastination and achieve so much more in our lives. Let's dive in! "When you find yourself falling back into a procrastination habit, do you have the tools? Do you know what it is you need to do to get yourself unstuck?" ~ Valorie BurtonIn This Episode:- What are the 5 subconscious habits that lead us to procrastinate?- What are the 5 simple ways that we can move forward?- Valorie's perfectionism as a writer that has sometimes prevented her from writing- What you can learn about yourself from your procrastination- What to do when tackling a project that seems too complicated- Do you believe that you truly deserve what it is that you want?- Understanding Self-Efficacy - Are you afraid? Are you focusing on what you want – or what you don't want? Successful women, when setting goals, are focusing on the positive things, rather than describing what they don't want. I'm Valorie Burton, and if you are ready to reframe the way in which you are articulating your vision by asking yourself three key questions, I believe you will achieve that much more. Today I'm talking about ways in which we can learn to refocus our attention on where we are going, reminding ourselves not to get too overwhelmed by the object that is in the way sometimes. This all starts with learning to ask ourselves 'what do I want?' and articulating a positive goal. Because then the destination is what matters, and we can remember it when that overwhelming object starts to grow bigger. Finding that locus of control, that thing that you can control, will shape your experience in a positive way. Peace is always at the top of my list. When I am at peace, even in a difficult season, I can walk through a situation with grace. So I remind myself that I want peace. What does success look like for you in this season of your life? Let's find out. "When you ask 'what do you want?' you take the focus off of the negative, off of the problem and the thing you don't want, and you refocus on what you want." ~ Valorie BurtonIn This Episode:- Asking yourself Powerful Questions (PQs) that lead to breakthroughs- Interrupting your thought pattern to ask yourself: what do you want?- Learning to take your focus off of the object that is in your way- How can we define getting on the same page as someone else?- What is your season?
