In episode two of our Visionary Remakes season, we survey the recent Coen brothers remake of True Grit (2010) and compare it to the original film, a John Wayne vehicle from 1969.Special Guest: Brian Eggert is the owner and film critic of Deep Focus Review, where he has written movie reviews, in-depth essays, and critical analyses since 2007. Brian also regularly appears on KARE 11, the NBC affiliate for the Twin Cities, to review and discuss movies. He belongs to the Society For Cinema and Media Studies, Minnesota Film Critics Alliance, Online Film & Television Association, International Film Society Critics, Independent Film Critics of America, The Critics Circle, and National Coalition of Independent Scholars.Westerns have gone through many cycles since the beginning of filmmaking. Right now, we are seeing an uptick in interest as the tv show Yellowstone dominates the traditional tv market. But back in 2010, Westerns were definitely far off in the background as comic book movies had begun to take over the box office. In 2010, the Coen brothers were coming off a very successful adaption of No Country for Old Men (2007) as well as two more left of center films, the sprightly spy romp Burn After Reading from 2008 and the niche existentialist A Serious Man from 2009. It is unclear why they decided to remake True Grit and focus on the novel from 1968 instead of the John Wayne movie which came a year later in 1969, but the choice was very successful. True Grit (2010) became the 2nd biggest Western in the modern box office. The 2010 True Grit showcases the refined talents of the Coens alongside the gorgeous cinematography of Roger Deakins, the layered and rich music from Carter Burwell, and a smashing breakout debut performance from Hailee Steinfeld as the lead Mattie Ross. The 1969 version of True Grit offers so much less. Despite John Wayne winning an Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, the original film seems totally out of step and out of time. In hindsight, it was an end-of-the-line production for the core creatives involved. The director, writer, and star actor were all at the end of their careers. Indeed this very type of Western was on its last leg as evidenced by the giant leap the genre made at the same time this film was being produced and released. Watch any of the bigger westerns from the late 1960s and then try to sit through True Grit (1969). The dislocation and disorientation is severe. The original True Grit was a swan song that came about a decade too late.
The movie True Grit was number one at the box office in 1969 with John Wayne in the lead role and once again when the story was adapted in 2010 with Jeff Bridges reprising the role of gritty Rooster Cogburn. Although the movie's title suited the grizzled and hard-drinking US Marshall, it wasn't really about him. Instead, it was about the young 14-year-old Mattie Ross who was determined to bring her father's murderer to justice. Of all the qualities that make people successful, I don't think grit gets the due it deserves. It's a quality that isn't universally shared by all. Still, as rare a quality as it is, I think it can be refined by anyone who truly seeks to add it to the arsenal of values they bring to potential employers. On this episode of the Career PROgressions Podcast, I'm honored to have the gritty entrepreneur Jamie Noe with me to have a conversation about facing your career with true grit. Since 2014 his company, Insurance Group of America, has had organic 35% growth year over year with a 97% employee retention rate. Can you imagine the grit it takes to accomplish something like that?! Listen in to find out.

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested. Please share with a friend and leave a review!
Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of H. Lee "Seinfeld" (aka Hailee Steinfeld). Best known for her roles as Mattie Ross in True Grit (2010), Emily in Pitch Perfect 2/3, and Kate Bishop in Hawkeye (2022), Hailee came out the gate on fire with an Oscar nomination for her first major role, and has only continued to impact entertainment since. Joined once again by Matti Groll, we discuss her surprisingly strong box office impact, her propensity to play angsty/quirky/obnoxious characters, the infusion of her musical and acting careers, and ponder when she will make a shift in the types of roles she plays. Where does Steinfeld rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
On this episode, the boys are taking it back to the 1870's as they review True Grit. Starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. Mattie Ross' father is murdered while on a trip to Arkansas. With little options, Mattie turns to the one man who may be able to bring down the men who killed her father, Rooster Cogburn. Though the outcome of this 1969 remake may be predictable, trying to figure out who put this movie in the mix may prove a bit more challenging.

Welcome back, everyone! This week's episode as pulling double-duty as a postscript to our series on the Western and the opener for our series on the Coen Brothers: True Grit. As we discuss in the episode, this film finds the Coens in an atypically traditionalist mode, making a relatively straightforward and even sentimental Western. One of the rare instances of the duo adapting someone else's writing, the film tells an earnest story of Mattie Ross, a 14 year old girl, as she partners with a slovenly US Marshall and a Texas Ranger in her quest to avenge her father's murder. While the film is more conventional than one might expect from the Coens, it is nevertheless filled with their typical craftsmanship, along with their penchant for stylized regional dialogue and character eccentricity. And by the end, it achieves an understated melancholy and wistfulness that lingers in the memory long after the credits have rolled.
Enjoy our presentation of True Grit written by Charles Portis and published by Harry N. Abrams. Mattie Ross is just fourteen when the coward Tom Chaney shoots her father down in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and robs him of his life, his horse, and $150 cash. Filled with an unwavering urge to avenge her father's blood, Mattie finds and, after some tenacious finagling, enlists one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal, as her partner in pursuit.True Grit is a New York Times Bestseller and has been adapted in to several films. How Lucky: By Will Leitch Website: https://gobookmart.com “A lovely book. Set in Athens, Georgia, the novel is a model of verisimilitude. It is also beautifully written and suspenseful, at the same time being all about goodness and caring without once being sappy, or, well, sentimental. And that is a rare feat in fiction.” -- Booklist (starred review) "I'm reading a fantastic novel by Will Leitch called How Lucky. Publishes in May, I think. It's suspenseful and often wildly funny. You are going to like this a lot, and I think a lot of you are going to like it. It has that Where the Crawdads Sing vibe." -- Stephen King “What's more thrilling than a fictional character speaking to us in a voice we haven't heard before, a voice so authentic and immediate - think Huck Finn, Holden Caulfield, Mattie Ross - that we suspect it must've been there all along, that we somehow managed to miss it? Daniel, the protagonist of Will Leitch's smart, funny, heartbreaking new novel How Lucky, is just such a voice, and I'm not sure it will ever completely leave my head, or that I want it to.” -- Richard Russo “How Lucky is a gem: a riveting plot and a narrator who is charming, engaging, and downright inspiring. Will Leitch brilliantly juggles hilarity and horror. I loved this novel — every page.” -- Chris Bohjalian, #1 Bestselling Author of The Flight Attendant and Hour of the Witch --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Show Notes: https://lplks.org/blogs/post/030-the-lost-cowboy-episode/ Recently there has been a resurgence of the Western genre (good conquering evil is all the more necessary for WHATEVER REASON.) According to Lauren Havens, the Modern Western has shifted from the usual cliche characters and settings and, instead, "many authors are borrowing the themes commonly found in westerns, and placing them in new time periods and locations -- even new worlds." Here are a few examples we mentioned in this episode: The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt Lonesome Animals by Bruce Holbert The Round House by Louise Erdrich Want even more suggestions? Howdy, listeners! Today we're saddling up and sucking back some moonshine to an old Western classic, 1969's True Grit! (NOTE: I have used my pun quota for this episode; the rest of this post is safe for consumption). Along with guest panelist Gavin, Jared and Clint tackle the impertinence of Mattie Ross, a little history of Oklahoma, and the nuances of a John Wayne performance, as they provide their signature drinking rules for this film.
It's episode 121...and they tell me you're a man with true grit. True Grit (2010) tells the story of Mattie Ross, a precocious 14-year old farm girl who sets out to avenge her father's death with the help of cantankerous drunkard Rooster Cogburn and cantankerous teetotaler LaBoeuf. Together the trio trek across the Old West in search of justice, cornbread and - above all else - a coward by the name of Tom Chaney. We consider the Coens, debate the Deakins, field the question of field amputations and ask ourselves if it's better to be a coward than a cowboy, all while discussing Joe's favourite film of all time. All of which leads to one question...how would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. This week we’re taking another trip back to the Old West with The Coen Brothers’ 2010 remake of True Grit. This story follows 14 year old Mattie Ross as she sets out to see her father’s killer brought to justice. With the aid of Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, Mattie tracks the killer and his gang across the Indian Territory of Arkansas and to their mountain hideout. In the end, Mattie gets her revenge but is bitten by a venomous snake and has to be quickly carried back to civilization by Rooster Cogburn. This is a wonderful film that was released to much critical acclaim. The back and forth between Cogburn and LaBoeuf sets the tone for their relationship throughout the film. Who played a better Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges or John Wayne? How spectacular is Hailee Steinfeld in this film? Can you believe this was her first major film role, at age 13? What are the chances the Coens will make a remake of Rooster Cogburn? This movie is great and if you haven’t watched the 1969 original make sure you check that out as well.
