A conversation with Jonas Steinfeld, a researcher and consultant based in Brazil specialising in agroforestry systems, about the many different levels of complexity in agroforestry. Does complexity lead to more or less work? Does complexity lead to more or less carbon storage, and why? And are complex agroforestry systems more profitable? The scientific world has been quite clear up until now that adding more complexity to agriculture, especially with perennials like trees, almost always makes massive environmental differences. So what is holding us back? Why aren't we planting trees everywhere?Learn from one of the leading scientists studying agroforestry systems in Brazil, the global hotspot and epicentre of agroforestry. After more than four years of PhD researching the many different levels of complexity in agroforestry, what conclusions can we draw?---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Sony began developing a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse before its 2018 release, with the writing and directing team attached. It was set to focus on the relationship between Moore's Miles and Steinfeld's Gwen. The sequel was officially announced in November 2019 and animation work began in June 2020, with a different visual style for each of the six universes visited by the characters. With a runtime of 140 minutes, it makes it the longest animated film ever produced by an American studio. These sort of reviews usually go on our Patreon page so join up! The link is below! Speaking with Empire Magazine about the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) sequel, Miller said, "People who've seen Across... have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise," adding, "It shows you worlds you haven't seen, and it's an emotional story that ends in a place where you need to see the third one. Steinfeld talked about this while speaking to Empire, during which she was asked where Gwen was at the start of the movie. "[Gwen's] at a point in her life where she realizes she can write her own stories," Steinfeld said. "If the first film was about Miles [Morales] learning that anyone can wear the mask, this one is about how you wear the mask. So, Gwen is finding out who she is, at her core. I've loved watching Gwen take ownership over who she is and what she's capable of." OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [51:50] We would love to hear back from you! Jay Steinfeld | Experimenting and Enjoying the Ride "You really never know when you set out to do anything, if it's going to work. If you do know, then you're not experimenting enough." — Jay Steinfeld This week's guest is Jay Steinfeld, author of Lead from the Core and founder of Blinds.com, which he sold to Home Depot in 2014. Steinfeld remained the company's CEO until he left in 2020 to not retire but, as he calls it, "rewire." He teaches business and entrepreneurship at Rice University, serves on multiple boards, and is active in charitable organizations. Jay's predominant approach to life and to business is to learn as much as possible, with the understanding that you're never going to know it all. He believes in experimentation, and in taking small steps to try something new to figure out if it's something he wants to build on. The loss of two important people in his life—his mother when he was a teenager and his wife after 25 years of marriage, both to cancer in their late 40s—also motivated him to learn and come to a better understanding of how he wanted to live his life. Two texts he cites as influential are Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel and The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. Jay explains how being value-led drove him in building his company. One of these values is experimenting without fear of failure. By articulating and modeling the core values of the company, he was able to hire people who would not be afraid to speak up and experiment. He was also able to guide his business as it was sold to Home Depot, making sure that the people who had helped him build his business were recognized, appreciated, and well compensated for all they did. Honesty is another value Jay discusses in this episode, where he advises CEOs to "not be chickenshit" but to be the one who tells people what they need to know. Another value Jay discusses is to "enjoy the ride." Having challenges and facing the unknown have been motivating for him, and he loves working with others to come up with new ideas and solutions. He believes his greatest achievement is assembling teams of people who succeeded at doing things he could never have done alone. In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, you'll also learn: How the loss of Jay Steinfeld's mother and wife affected how sees the world How he approaches social media How he went about planning for his "rewirement" and the one person he wanted to meet When it might make sense to give up How to model and send the message to employees that experimentation is valued What you need to do if an employee is not performing up to expectations What to do before selling a business Connect With Jay Steinfeld Website www.jaysteinfeld.com Link to download first chapter of book: www.jaysteinfeld.com/thebook Book page on Amazon: Lead from the Core: The Four Principles for Profit and Prosperity LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/jaysteinfeld Twitter www.twitter.com/jaysteinfeld The 2022 Leading with Genuine Care Retreat is at full capacity.* *If you would like to be placed on the waiting list, please click here and fill out the form. Jay is the founder and former CEO of Blinds.com, the world's largest online window coverings retailer, acquired by The Home Depot in 2014. Jay remained as its CEO and later joined The Home Depot Online Leadership Team. After stepping away from these roles in early 2020, he began teaching entrepreneurship at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business and has increased his involvement on numerous private company boards and serves as a director of the public company, Masonite. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Jay Steinfeld discuss:The counter productiveness of generosity Caring for your people genuinely Being serious about your culture Tips for creating startup businesses Key Takeaways:A lot of people think that what you need to do to succeed in business is to spend as little as possible and give away as little as you can get away with and you'll get more money. However, the opposite is true. If you give more, you'll get more. Not every person wants to dedicate their whole life to one company. People have dreams, aspirations, and goals of their own. When you start making people feel that you genuinely care about them, they'll start trusting you more. You have to communicate to your team that embodying the culture and values of the organization is the most important thing. Be serious about culture, and hold people to your expectations. It's better to be prepared yet humble enough to know that there is a lot that you don't know. When experimenting, try the small and fast ideas that have any potential rather than big ideas that would take a lot of time to execute. "It's better to give as much as you can away because you'll actually get people more loyal, more satisfied, and that goes with not just your customers - it's especially true with your employees." — Jay Steinfeld See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Jay Steinfeld: Website: https://www.jaysteinfeld.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BlindscomCEOLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaysteinfeld/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. What does a successful entrepreneur do for their second act? Most entrepreneurs work hard to create a prosperous business, perhaps even with the intent of selling it and making an exit. For those who succeed, the next question is — now, what? Do you start a new business and begin the cycle again? And how do you give back to those who helped you reach success? Today, I sit down with Jay Steinfeld, a world-renowned entrepreneur and early ecommerce adopter who took his small blinds business online in the early days of the internet, and the story of how blinds.com became the largest online blinds retailer in the world. He is also the author of Lead from the Core: The 4 Principles for Profit and Prosperity, which lays out the “Four Es” — a set of guiding principles that can help overcome any obstacle to your organization's success. Jay takes us back to 1993, and tells us how he experimented with online sales to supplement his brick-and-mortar store. While it was slow at first, the online channel grew so large they chose to sell the physical business and concentrate on online sales. In 2014, Jay sold blinds.com to Home Depot. Unlike many entrepreneurs, Jay chose to stay with Home Depot for 7 years, leading their online leadership team. Jay explains that his vision was not complete, and he seized upon the opportunity to see it through to the end. He moved his knowledge of online sales into adjacent categories, and found even greater success. Now, Jay tells us about his book, Lead from the Core, which teaches the four 4's E's: Evolve, Experiment, Express, and Enjoy. He uses the book, and it's lessons, to elevate others and help their businesses rise and grow - giving back to the communities and people who supported him in his initial ventures. Our conversation is packed with powerful advice for entrepreneurs at any stage of business! Three Key Takeaways: * When you have a compelling vision for your entrepreneurial efforts, share it with others - it will improve everyone's success, and move the world forward. * Don't be afraid to take chances and experiment with the way your business operates. You might discover new opportunities. * A compelling vision and positive culture is crucial to retaining key employees through any transition. Be transparent with the 'why' as well as the 'how,' and you'll see people lean in!
