It's our 150th episode! Thanks for listening! Paul acknowledges the unfortunate title and dedicates this episode to the life and birthday of his friend McKenzie. At the end of the episode, there is a song of theirs from many years ago. We hope you give it a listen. Lane Meyer (John Cusack) has been recently dumped by Beth (Amanda Wyss), his dad (David Ogden Stiers) demands he remedies the ‘tasty' car that lays dominant in an “auto cocoon” in the front yard, his mom (Kim Darby) is boiling bacon until it turns blue, and he can't make the ski team because Roy Stalin (Aaron Dozier) is giving him the high school bully treatment. Although Lane might feel hopeless and that life is meaningless at the moment, with a bit of encouragement and confidence he finds from Monique (Diane Franklin), Lane will realize “language lessons” are worth fighting for. RTS makes sure to pay their two dollars and eat some “fraunch bread.” Jeremy and La-Mar try "pure snow" with Charles De Mar (Curtis Armstrong). Then they try some “monster eggnog” that's made with lighter fluid. Emily gets a coat made from real aardvark fur and a stack of TV dinners. Collin hits the K-12 to show us all how it's done! “He's skiing on one ski!” Music by: Sigh, Growl. Happy Birthday, Kenz! XO

We've made it to another Halloween! As has been the tradition here the past few years, we end our annual 13 Days of Halloween series with a film from the Halloween franchise. This year, Grant joins us to discuss the truly bizarre 1995 entry - Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Definitely not a good movie, but it gave us a lot to talk about.Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to listen to one or all of our 13 Days of Halloween episodes. Happy haunting!
Tread Perilously's Patreon request month continues with an episode of Murder, She Wrote called "We're Off to Kill the Wizard." Jessica Fletcher's quick trip to Chicago is disrupted when a local amusement park impresario invites her and her relatives to a preview of a new horror-infused theme park. But his real objective is to convince her to license her work out for a new venture. When he turns up dead, though, plenty of the people around him look good for the crime and Jessica's quick visit turns into a whole investigation as she attempts to figure out how the park owner was murdered in a locked room no one could enter or exit. Both Erik and Justin are glad to be in the cozy confines of Jessica's world. The pair are also surprised by the nature of a first season Murder, She Wrote. Sprouted potatoes become a new adversary. Justin admits he is mainlining Columbo during the week. A discussion of Blake's 7 breaks out. Justin guesses why this week's Patron chose this particular episode; it might have something to do with a certain child guest star. Erik can't unsee Burbank playing Chicago throughout the episode. Geography Corner leads to Joe Mantenga's pizza place. Guest actor George DiCenzo gets his flowers, as does Kim Darby. Fast food burger rankings are made and a wild Les Nessman appears.
True Grit directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, and Glen Campbell. Episode Roundup: The Cowpunchers reflect on awful childhood haircuts. Mel warns us of the dangers of fourteen-year-old horse girls who are good at math. Amy successfully describes a snake pit. Stu is impressed by John Wayne's lumbering.

8 more movie reviews for you today, and lets dive right in. Wait! Hold up for just a second, cause today we also do a lil mini celebration of having reviewed over 225 films here. Just about halfway for film reviews according to my ever expanding list. So we share some of our favorites and not so favs from the list. Ok back to it. We start off today with (Cold Turkey 1971). Here we have Dick van Dyke Pippa Scott and pretty much every big character actor workin in the 70's. This was directed by Norman Lear, who actually did not direct much, he was more of a writer and producer, and can y'all believe he is still with us at 101. He showed up the oscars and I was pretty amazed. Damn let's go, this is a movie about a town that wants to make a name for itself by taking an odd bet from big Tobacco that a town can't quit smoking for a month. Will the succeed/ is this film any good, well we will certainly give our hot takes on this 52 year old movie. Here I screwed up the chronological flow of things and engaged in our Pink Panther movie early, apologies, but it's (the Pink Panther strikes again 1976) More apologies to slapstick fans, for my treatment of the so called genre, just imagine me falling down a lot and having a rake hit me in the face……. While I solve crime, that could make you happy again. Moving on to (the Snow Goose 1971) spoiler with little remorse, it's the most trippy 70's way to tell the story of Dunkirk ever. Listen to our review of the snow goose then listen to Camel's amazing progressive rock masterpiece, the snow goose, for some musical insight into this. Why not? Next up is (the Other 1972) Ha, we couldn't quite figure it out while reviewing this drama horror mystery film, but right here on IMDB it says it takes place in 1935, and that's very important to know, NOT. It can bug us when we just can't tell while viewing, when a movie is supposed to take place, I thought that Touched by Love just had everyone dressing basic and a lil hipster, but it took place in the 50's apparently. What else to say………… I think this kid might be trouble. Let's continue with another creepy one we wanted to get on the tape before halloween but as usual didn't. Please enjoy now our review of (Don't look now 1973) Ha, no review here, you gotta listen, but why would you be here and not. This one is weird and I think it's meant to be. Fans of Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland, and director Nicolas Roeg, must sometimes find their way here, whether they love it or not. Moving on again to (Conduct Unbecoming 1975). The guy from sound of music who was apparently at least half drunk the whole shoot is here in this, he was also in Star Trek 6, also the guy from Jurrassic park that says “welcome to Jurrasic park.' Is here too sooooo it's got to be great of course. F**k don't forget the guy from Logan's Run, the guy from Cheech and Chongs Up in Smoke, and the Officer who says “my vow of celibacy is on record.” In Star Trek the motion picture, she's here, as well as Susan York from superman 2. Everyone's here so this is just gonna rule, right? Next up is Henry Wrinker in (the One and Only 1978). Will the Fonz who is the absolute most annoying self obsessed college student, find balance, and have a healthy home and work relationship? Let's see, Henry is a great actor so even in cringe it's nice, at least for me to watch him cook. Kim Darby from the STOS episode MIRI and True grit is here, along with Mrs Deagle from Gremlins who gets sent through the roof in the stair chair device. Finally today we review (GoldenGirl 1979). This, long long on my list of buried 70's films with a very intriguing premise has finally been re-released on DVD. Will it live up to the hype in my head? Susan Anton is here, singing the theme song, and training constantly. Hey, 70's film fans, I hope this finds you well, and seriously, thanks for reading this, and listening.

Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Tuesday September 7th. Today - The Bureau of Land Management recently herded mustangs into a holding pen in an effort to thin the herd of almost 900 roaming northwestern Colorado. Why? The BLM argues that drought has made life unsustainable for that many horses. Though not everyone involved agrees. But first -- We'd like to thank our sponsor, Pinnacol Assurance. Pinnacol provides caring workers' comp insurance. They were also named one of the most community-minded companies in Colorado. Pinnacol gives back through community investments, scholarships and apprenticeships. At Pinnacol, caring is more than kindness. It's their powertool. See how they put care to work at Pinnacol dot com. But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today we're going back to September 7th, 1968 when the town of Ridgway was transformed into Fort Smith, Arkansas for the filming of True Grit. Starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell, and Kim Darby, it earned Wayne his only Academy Award for the role of lawman Rooster Cogburn. The film used a number of Colorado locations including Gunnison, Montrose, and Ouray. Wayne praised the “beautiful scenery” of the San Juans and raved about the steak at the Red Barn restaurant in Montrose. Now, our feature story. What could be more quintessentially Western than a wild horse roundup? The federal Bureau of Land Management used a helicopter to herd mustangs into a holding pen over several days in an effort to thin the herd of almost 900 roaming the hills canyons of far northwestern Colorado, where the BLM argues that drought has made life unsustainable for that many horses. But not everyone who caravaned to the roundup in the vast expanses near the Wyoming border agrees. And that made for a tense day on the range for Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown. Still dusty from the trip, she joined Sun colleague Kevin Simpson to talk about the experience, and the clashing views of how to manage the expanding herd. You can read more from Jennifer Brown about the wild mustang roundup and the controversy surrounding it at ColoradoSun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Demand for housing in Colorado has never been stronger and the proof is in the building permits. Six of the top 20 biggest months since 1988 have occurred since October. But a construction labor shortage is keeping builders from meeting demand -- so much so that most new homes are sold before they are constructed. The Colorado Homebuilding Academy has graduated hundreds of new workers since it started in 2017, but that's still not enough to close the gap created as skilled laborers retired have or migrated to other work. Federal unemployment benefits dried up on Saturday. There were about 107,000 Coloradans still drawing the benefit. Another 30,000 people lost a $300 per week federal “bonus.” Colorado has distributed about $11.2 billion in state and federal unemployment benefits since March 29, 2020, when people began making pandemic-related unemployment claims. About $7.8 billion of the total flowed from federal programs. Colorado had to borrow $1 billion to keep up with state benefits and interest begins accruing on that sum on Tuesday. Unemployment premiums paid by Colorado businesses will be raised to pay off that loan. A plan to log 345 acres of federal forest on Grand Mesa may have less of an impact on 30 miles of Nordic ski trails after forest managers and the Grand Mesa Nordic Council met to brainstorm on Friday. Two possible solutions that came out of the meeting were to cut a ski trail adjacent to Scales Lake Road so that both skiers and logging trucks could use the area at the same time, and to suspend logging on Nov. 15 and finish the operation later in the winter, when the prime Nordic skiing season is over. Now the ideas must be proposed to the Montrose logging company that holds the contracts. Logging near the Skyway trail system is expected to begin on schedule in October. We live in an era of remakes and sequels. With that mind, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) realized there were several films they've seen and loved that were, in fact, remakes of older movies. Thus, the theme for August became Originals! That is to say movies that have been remade that either Jonathan or Corey hasn't seen the source material but has seen the remake. This required a bit of research to pick the movies for this month, but the two did a great job of finding some real classics they have never seen. August will have five episodes so Corey got to pick three movies to Jonathan's two. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 5 - True Grit (1969) Corey and Jonathan really love the Jeff Bridges led, Coen Brothers directed, 2010 film True Grit. Neither are that familiar with John Wayne and despite neither loving The Searchers (1959), they decided it made sense to watch the original True Grit (1969). The movie is directed by Henry Hathaway and it stars Wayne, Kim Darby, and Glen Campbell where Rooster Cogburn is hired to "help a stubborn teenager track down her father's murderer in Indian territory." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld had it. Kim Darby and John Wayne had it. (Or should we say, Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross had it!) We are talking about grit--true grit. How do we identify then stick with a goal despite running into challenges? Grit goes beyond perseverence. Listen in to the RDCs conversation with Lt Col Brandie Jefferies, the Deputy Chair of the Leadership Department at the Air Command and Staff College. We discuss her research on grit and talk about ways we can all develop more grit in our lives.
Charles Portis wrote a fascinating novel True Grit, that was subsequently made into two very good films. We've shown our hand in this write up but know that you will still listen to get the details. The first film was a 1969 production starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, and Glenn Campbell. It was directed by Henry Hathawy is remains a classic example of the great American Western. We think the 2010 version by the Coen brothers and starring Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, and Matt Damon also deserves a place in that pantheon. We are joined by our compatriot Mike Lembke, and hope that you will enjoy our spoilers and digressions. Readings by Megan Kleinschmidt

Long before Guillermo del Toro fleshed it out as a feature film, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark was a TV movie legend that loomed vividly in the memory any kid who happened to have caught its first airing in 1973. But does this haunted house flick stand up if you watch it as an adult? Sam is joined by writer-director Adam Dugas to talk plotholes, scrotum-faced goblins and Kim Darby’s unfortunate styling. As we continue our Cusack Run, we talk about Diana’s pick Better Off Dead... (1985). Polina missed this film growing up, but likes its absurdist nature and complements the way it encapsulates the constant humiliation one feels as a teenager. It was a television staple in Diana's house and is also the catalyst of her first celebrity crush. Better Off Dead... tells the story of high school student Lane Myer who is suicidal after his girlfriend breaks up with him shortly before Christmas. Stars John Cusack, Diane Franklin, Amanda Wyss, Aaron Dozier, Curtis Armstrong, Kim Darby, Dan Schneider, and David Ogden Stiers (from Wikipedia.org). We open the show discussing the results of our Twitter poll about the love triangle in The Hunger Games. Diana willfully the admits her pick Teen Wolf Too (1987) is a terrible movie, but had a nerdy girl she cheered on. (Spoiler alerts are irrelevant if you've seen Teen Wolf.) Replace Michael J. Fox with Jason Bateman, basketball with boxing, and downgrade the wolf make up effects and you get the idea. Also stars Kim Darby, John Astin, Estee Chandler, Stuart Fratkin, Mark Holton, Paul Sand, and James Hampton (as Uncle Howard). On this week's episode, the gang joins the Sideshow Network just in time to discuss the totally lame and completely joke-less sequel, Teen Wolf Too! Who was demanding sports stay in the story? Is Michael J. Fox's character supposed to be dead in this movie? And who on Earth would think it's a good idea to befriend Stiles?
